Nigeria has confiscated 2.5 tonnes of "plastic rice" smuggled into the country by unscrupulous businessmen, the customs service says. Lagos customs chief Haruna Mamudu said the fake rice was intended to be sold in markets during the festive season. He said the rice was very sticky after it was boiled and "only God knows what would have happened" if people ate it. It is not clear where the seized sacks came from but rice made from plastic pellets was found in China last year. Rice is the most popular staple food in Nigeria. The BBC's Peter Okwoche says it is the only foodstuff that crosses cultural and ethnic lines across the country. Africa Live: More on this and other stories No ordinary rice: Martin Patience, BBC News, Lagos Whoever made this fake rice did an exceptionally good job - on first impression it would have fooled me. When I ran the grains through my fingers nothing felt out of the ordinary. But when I smelt a handful of the "rice" there was a faint chemical odour. Customs officials say when they cooked up the rice it was too sticky - and it was then abundantly clear this was no ordinary batch. They've sent a sample to the laboratories to determine exactly what the "rice" is made of. They are also warning the public not to consume the mystery foodstuff as it could be dangerous. Fake food scandals are thankfully rare in Nigeria when you compare it to countries such as China. The big scandal here is fake pharmaceutical drugs that kill a huge number of people every year. A total of 102 sacks, each containing 25kg (55lb), was seized. Investigations are under way to establish how much of the contraband has already been sold. The customs official called on "economic saboteurs who see yuletide season as a peak period for their nefarious acts to desist from such illegal" business activity. Mr Mamudu did not explain how the plastic rice was made but said it had been branded as "Best Tomato Rice".http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-38391998

AS President Muhammadu Buhari holds Economic and Security summit with stakeholders in the South East tomorrow, strong indications emerged today that the South East Senate Caucus would boycott the Town Hall meeting, even as Chairman of the Caucus, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has told President Buhari that “it is the view of the Caucus that what the South East needs is development and not to be tagged with any other issue like security.” This view by the South-East Senate Caucus may not be unconnected to the recent massive deployment of security operatives across the region in a military operation code-named Operation Python Dance. The meeting holds tomorrow in Enugu. Confirming the planned boycott, Chairman of the Caucus, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe said that the South East Senators will stay away from the Town Hall meeting, citing lack of adequate consultation as reason. Abaribe however admitted that though there was an attempt to consult the caucus prior to the meeting, it was not adequate, adding, “The South East Senate Caucus will not be attending having not been adequately consulted. Again it is the view of the Caucus that what the South East needs is development and not to be tagged with any other issue like security. “South east has been utterly neglected and marginalized over time especially with regards to addressing factors that stimulates development including the place of Ndigbo in the present administration. “So if we are to hold a town hall meeting the agenda must be restricted to purely development of the region. The agenda must be articulated to address the issues as highlighted. This has not been done That is where the issue of lack of adequate consultation comes in.” Abaribe further advised that whatever should be done must be in the overall interest of the South East region.www.vanguardngr.com/2016/12/s-east-senate-caucus-to-buhari-our-region-needs-development-not-issues-like-security/ |

ABUJA— There are indications that Nigeria will earn more from oil starting from January, 2017, as price of oil yesterday rose to $55.61 per barrel. Nigeria’s 2017 budget has been predicated on $42 per barrel. United States crude futures were up 32 cents at 53.62 dollars a barrel, while benchmark Brent crude futures added 26 cents to 55.61 dollars. This is coming on the heels of a dollar yield growth which saw the U.S. dollar record a 14- year peak as global yield spreads moved inexorably in its favour, while a falling yen lifted Japanese shares to a one-year top. The Nikkei added 0.3 per cent in thin trade, while Australia’s main index climbed 0.6 percent to its highest in 17 months after Wall Street racked up more records. The dollar index, which measures it against a basket of currencies, stood at 103.100 having touched 103.65, its highest since December 2002. The euro was a fraction firmer at 1.0413 dollars. On Wall Street, the Dow ended just 25 points shy of the magical 20,000 barrier helped by a 1.68 per cent gain in Goldman Sachs. Stocks were said to have been on a tear since the November 8 presidential election, with the Dow up nine per cent.www.vanguardngr.com/2016/12/nigeria-to-earn-more-as-oil-price-rises-to-55-61/ |
