TopHand:
Doing business is rewarding and enjoyable whenever u open a new u must be not only b prepared, but you must b focused, disciplined and b ready to think in the opposite direction to solve a problem - you must b ready to take a U turn
preparation, this is must include not making a profit for first 2 years, I once ask an uncle of my why did he have so many different businesses he told me that doing business is like mixed farming an orange tree takes 10 -15 years b4 it produces so why only plant oranges, why not plant corn vegetables etc between the ridges, never expect a new business to feed u or pay the rent.
1. Factored all costs needed for running that business, buy do not rent whenever possible the major cost aspects to run that business e.g. if it is a shop u want to open devise a plan to buy the shop remember the shop itself is an investment on its own.
2. Sort out yur power needs electricity unfortunately is holding Nigeria from developing, the good news is that solar energy represents a very good investment, if you are going to be generating power buy at least two brand new inverter generators, these generators maintain a good constant variable supply of current this adds to the longetivity of yur equipments.
3 Start with a small amount of stock, never over stock this will prevent storage and security problems affecting you, after some time u will get to know how much stock is required over a set period of time.
4. Marketing, spend on marketing yur initial strategy is to carry out a survey of people who sell yur product, I said sell not buy, listen to their misgivings and devise a strategy to make yur product superior, market yur product, get 2 know what kind of people yur customers r, do their use the internet? social media? mobile phones? connect to them, flood them with sms about yur bulk discounts, holiday promotions, events etc
5. Employ a reliable team and reward them 4 their efforts
6. Make use of technological advances in equipment although this is a long term need, employed only when the business is firmly on its feet
These are some of my secrets NL, Nigeria is big enough 4 all to prosper
Nice

I quoted you already regarding this on another of your thread. The Chinese sell fake machines and they don't manufacture spare parts and that means you are on your own when the machine starts developing faults. Also their machines have a low capacity of BPH. At the end of the day, its a very unwise business decision.

Stop encouraging people to waste their money.

You have nice ideas, however atimes you write like you don't live in Nigeria. If you did you would have included a "power plant" in that list. The major reason why manufacturing and business in general have a hard time growing is because we have to generate our own electricity. Do you have any idea how much diesel you will have to purchase to be able to power a generator used to power a manufacturing machine?

Also, you wrote "preferably from China/India" in that list. Obviously you know nothing about machinery. The Chinese, most especially, are in the habit of cloning European machinery. What they do is they visit large fairs in Europe, buy the machines and go back to their countries to clone their own. As a result, they end up producing the same machines with lower production capacity and most times they are never concerned with spare parts. I know you probably said that because their machines are cheap but in manufacturing, you can never substitute quality for cheap price.

I once had a client who insisted on purchasing machinery from China and after 2 years the machines began to develop faults. My client had to travel all the way to China to request for parts from the company only to be laughed at and told "we don't sell parts". Another client bought machines and barely a month after using the machines, one of them exploded and killed a staff.

I know you mean well but your post shows you have no practical knowledge of manufacturing and how manufacturing machines work. Please, make a deeper research before recommending Chinese and Indian machines to people before they start wasting their capital.

Keep up the good work
I will not join issues with you sir but you seems to forget that most european companies and American companies has for over ten years running their business in China and India because it is the new trend for people to buy machinery just like Dubai become a tourist attraction center beating Miami, London and many other big cities.

I will probably say that you are not in touch with how machinery work. Some people go to china and ask for the cheapest machinery that could do the same work a better one can do. Chinese companies sells to you what you ask for and if you want a machine that lasts you will get it. Concerning the issue of price, Well China and India are growing rapidly and most companies tend to lower their price to attract consumers just like Dangote Cement once lowered the price of cement to 1000 Naira. It does not mean that Dangote cement has a lesser quality. You seems not to understand economic in business.

I mosly advice people to buy machinery from India rather than China as I have tasted Indian Machines.

Another mistakes that people made just like you are requesting for a bigger machine with high price...Most of the high priced machine are difficult to find their parts unlike other ones that their parts are all over lagos. I know a big company that was own by a Former Politician who went and bought high price machinery and when the machine spoils, it takes about 3 months to get the right foreigners to fix it and time is money. Could you Imagine a company that produce daily used products to shut down for 3 months? You have lost 40% of your customer. This happen time and time for thins company despite the huge amount of money being pumped in it. When the owner sees that he has pumped much money than the company has has gotten. He shuts the company down and uptill this time the company is still shut down. This company has about 4 transformers, 5 3 stories building for staffs and produce about 7 products. Just to inform you how big the company is.

Just like a Driver will advice you not to buy the latest 2015 Mack truck for your startup because of lack of parts and other factors..So Will I advice you to start small and grow with time. Start with a machine that can produce a range number of products a day before jumping to the one that can produce many more so that when problems occur, you will be positioned well to tackle it or even switch to the smaller mcahine till the bigger one is fixed.

Thanks Sir.

one more question, when u ssid competition is too much in lagos side, what kind of competition do u mean?. Is it the competion for the market?
There are more Manufactures of the product in Lagos and most Markets or Whole salers or retailers have their constant supplier or chosen supplier. So for you to outshine and win a stake in the market share.. You will have to start with much money, speed up production, lower product price, advertise more, produce high quality product..

I mostly advice beginners with relatively small money to start small and grow. So that they your product will showcased in Lagos market, it will have tag name that it is a big company in Ondo or Kano or Imo or bayelsa. You will come to Lag as a big company and can easily have some market share.

Hope it helps.

Not in Lagos.. There are too much competitors that side. I am located in Onitsha.

Buy raw materians from many importers that import the PVC resins.. other ones like Calcium carbonate is widely produced in Nigeria in which the company also pulverize it. Some damaged pipes can be re used to if grinder with a small machine/

Finding Your Target Market

Finding your target Market where you can sell your finished products is easier in Nigeria as people gather many places and so they need to drink water regularly to void dehydrating and such places are as follows:

1. Sports Vicinity

This is a very good place to advertise your products and have an agreement with the organizers to approve the sale of your water only or with their few ones.

2. Shopping Malls

You might find it difficult convincing some shopping malls owner to list your product in their shelves as a beginner but with time you will have your way and this is a very good location to advertise and sell your product.

3. Super Market/Convenience Stores

This is regarded as the small shopping malls in Nigeria and has a need to advertise with them to sell your products.

4. Restaurants/Eateries/Fast Food

This is a very good place to market your product and considering the vast number of restaurants in Nigeria. You will always have your way with many restaurants and eateries out there in Nigeria.

5. Hotels//Guest House Bars

This is a very lucrative target market for your product as most hostels don’t sell sachet water in their premises and this will make a high demand of your product if allowed.

6. Drinking Joints/Beer/Wine/Meat Bars

This is also a very good marketing target because of the high populations of Nigeria that turn out to visit these places for relaxation and entertainments.

4. Storage tanks is very important too as you need to store your water before pumping it into the machine and you can buy some of these tanks at ranging price of 48,000 Naira to 97,000 Naira base on the size of the tank.

5. Government Approval is very essential before you start producing or start selling and getting your approval is by registering with NAFDAC. It costs about 85,000 Naira to register with NAFDAC but I will advise to find some agents that work with NAFDAC officials to be able to fasten your registration process and they may demand up to 350,000 Naira to speed up and obtain the Approval for your company. They are recognized by NAFDAC and will also make the site inspection and approval to be easier and often go free. The license is renewable after every 5 years for bottle Water Company.

Other things will be:

• Fire extinguishers and prevention equipments.
• Alternate Power supply.
