Health / Causes & Symptoms Of Cervical Cancer (cancer Of The Cervix) by winta2007(m): 2:05pm On Dec 24, 2010
What is the cervix?
The cervix is part of a woman's reproductive system. It's in the pelvis. The cervix is the lower, narrow part of the uterus (womb).
The cervix is a passageway:

* The cervix connects the uterus to the vagina. During a menstrual period, blood flows from the uterus through the cervix into the vagina. The vagina leads to the outside of the body.
* The cervix makes mucus. During sex, mucus helps sperm move from the vagina through the cervix into the uterus.
* During pregnancy, the cervix is tightly closed to help keep the baby inside the uterus. During childbirth, the cervix opens to allow the baby to pass through the vagina.

What is cancer?
Cancer begins in cells, the building blocks that make up tissues. Tissues make up the organs of the body.
Normal cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When normal cells grow old or get damaged, they die, and new cells take their place.
Sometimes, this process goes wrong. New cells form when the body does not need them, and old or damaged cells do not die as they should. The buildup of extra cells often forms a mass of tissue called a growth or tumor.
Growths on the cervix can be benign or malignant. Benign growths are not cancer. They are not as harmful as malignant growths (cancer).

* Benign growths (polyps, cysts, or genital warts):
o are rarely a threat to life
o don't invade the tissues around them
* Malignant growths (cervical cancer):
o may sometimes be a threat to life
o can invade nearby tissues and organs
o can spread to other parts of the body

Cervical cancer begins in cells on the surface of the cervix. Over time, the cervical cancer can invade more deeply into the cervix and nearby tissues. The cancer cells can spread by breaking away from the original (primary) tumor. They enter blood vessels or lymph vessels, which branch into all the tissues of the body. The cancer cells may attach to other tissues and grow to form new tumors that may damage those tissues. The spread of cancer is called metastasis. See the Staging section for information about cervical cancer that has spread.

Family / A Guide For Loosing Weight After Pregnancy by winta2007(m): 1:32pm On Dec 24, 2010
Pregnancy changes us. The change most times is drastic, and especially for us here in Africa, with our culture (the whole pumping you with food after childbirth and all that). 70 percent of women never get back to their former size after childbirth, and of the remaining 30 percent, 15 percent don’t lose the big tummy.

After childbirth, you might notice that you still look pregnant despite the fact that you have already given birth, this is absolutely normal. It takes between four and six weeks for your uterus to fully contract back to its normal size. Remember; please do not make the work harder on yourself. Do not over it during the pregnancy, the more you overeat, the harder it is to lose. Ensure you eat healthy during the pregnancy, but please please please do not overeat.

Diet
With no intent to criticise our culture, I would say that the habit of pumping women with tins of milk after childbirth and daily pounded yam is totally uncalled for. A lot of women add more weight after pregnancy than they did during pregnancy. Don’t get me wrong, you really need to eat well, but not over eat. You should eat healthy, lots of Vegetables, Fruits and Salads, drink lots of water and continue with the routine drugs given to you at the hospital. The myth that if you don’t drink multiple tins of breast milk after childbirth your milk would dry up is fallacy. What happens to the poor women who can’t afford milk? Does their breast dry up? How many market women have you heard that complained that their breast milk dried up because they could not get powdered milk to drink? Please avoid daily pounded yam and the likes after childbirth.

Breastfeeding is one of the easiest ways to lose pregnancy weight. I always remember the episode of desperate housewives, where a mother was feeding her fully grown up son with breast milk, because she wanted to stay slim. However, I am not saying we should breastfeed till they are ten or eleven, but at least one year. Remember the WHO guideline says two years. Breast milk contains calories, and the more you breastfeed the more you lose calories.

Exercising
According the American college of Obstetrics and gynaecology, if you were active before the deliver, and you had a normal delivery with no complication, you can start walking and doing minor strengthening exercises for your abdomen as soon as you feel strong enough. However if you had a caesarean section, you should wait several weeks before starting any exercising.

For the exercises, we shall focus on three parts:

a. Cardio: Initially, after childbirth you should not do any strenuous cardio exercises. Start slow and steady: while some of us may be so eager to jump on the treadmill and start working out day and night, this might be dangerous. New mothers need to start slow and steady, start about 15 to 20 minutes every day, 3 days a week. The best form of cardio I advise for new moms is walking. Walking is a great exercise for women who just gave birth, please do not waste your maternity leave watching Nigerian movies all day and drinking milk. WALK! Walking can be done anywhere, any day and any time. For the first few weeks, you can walk 15 to 20 minutes every day, and then you increase both the time and the intensity as time goes by. A good form of walking is using the stroller, for those who live in areas where they can move around with the stroller. Taking your baby out in the stroller would help you burn some calories.

b. Strength Training
Please for those that had a caesarean section, I would advice that you stay away from this until your doctor says it’s okay for you to do this Pregnancy weakens some parts of the abdomen, While it isn’t possible to reduce only one spot, i.e. reduce only the tummy, you can however strengthen your abdominal muscles, so that after you lose the fat overlying them, you won’t have that flabby tummy that you see on some women. Sit-ups are useful, back exercises and tummy exercises. If it’s possible, get a tummy bench, and while you are watching African magic or Movie magic, you could be working on your tummy and losing weight. I am placing a link here to the video for abdominal exercises should you be interested in doing them. : http://africanweightloss..com/2009/06/easy-do-at-home-tummy-exercises.html

c. Toning of your arms to prevent the popular ‘Christian mother arm’ could be done with dumbbells, you can carry 5kg dumbbells daily, this would help greatly.
Things that prevent us from exercising:
1. Fatigue: this is a common complaint, most women are very tired or often complain of fatigue after childbirth
2. Busy Schedule: some women jump back to work after childbirth, while some who are at home get overwhelmed with taking care of the baby and feeding him or her
3. Time constraints –Most women complain of Lack of time, they claim that there is never enough time to wake up an exercise.
My usual reply to this is: HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT
I believe this all depends on how bad you want it. IF you were promised 1million naira at the end of the month just to wake up at 4 am every day, most of us will not even go to bed at all to ensure we are still awake at that 4am. There is never enough time in the world. If it’s important to you, you shall make out time. If you normally wake up at 5 am, try waking up at 4 thirty instead. Begin with the end in mind. I suggest you picture two things in your head. One of them is you being slim and shapely at the end of the next three months, and the other is you being fat and shapeless, lying down at home and your husband comes home and rushes straight to the bed so you won’t ask him for sex. Picture that several times in your head; I am sure no one would need to urge you to wake up by 4 and exercise. Also try splitting your workouts, there is no need to do a 2 hour work out at once, split it, 30 mins daily or 30 mins twice daily. Be consistent, watch your diet. Heidi Klum is no magician, even after her house of kids; she still looks like a 20 year old. It takes hard work and dedication.

Politics / Enugu: A’ Court Vacates Order Against Fresh Congresses by winta2007(m): 1:23pm On Dec 24, 2010
The Appeal Court sitting in Enugu yesterday vacated an earlier injunction restraining the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting fresh congresses to elect new party executive in the state.

In the lead judgment, Justice Ignatius Agube, ruled that the panel agreed that the jurisdiction of the appellate court was circumscribed by the prevailing circumstances of the appeal.
He stated that the panel sustained the preliminary objection of counsel to the second respondent as meritorious, ruling that the interim order of the appellate court on November 2010 “is hereby suspended.”

The judge also said two other motions filed by the applicants were struck out. Justices Hussein Muktar and Mojeed Owoade corroborated him while the former held that Offiah’s instant motion before the court was quite misplaced. Following the ruling, the Governor Sullivan Chime’s faction moved quickly and filed a fresh motion to stall any fresh congresses while the other camp loyal to the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo were reportedly jubilating over the verdict.

After the ruling, nerves frayed literally outside the court room, as counsel to Vita Abba and 28 others who dragged INEC and the PDP to court over the matter, Mrs. Justina Offiah(SAN) and Prof. Ilochi Okafor (SAN) with Dr. Mike Ajogwu (SAN), countered each other.
While Okafor told newsmen that nothing now hindered the PDP from conducting the congresses, Offiah said she had filed a new motion for interlocutory injunction against the ruling of the Federal High Court, Enugu which had prompted the appeal that was struck out yesterday.

Politics / Ojukwu Flown To Uk, Gov Obi Thanks All by winta2007(m): 12:48pm On Dec 24, 2010
Former Biafran warlord, and leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dim Chukwuemeka-Odumegwu Ojukwu, who is down with stroke was yesterday flown to the United Kingdom on board a white air ambulance marked D.C 6 at exactly 1.50 pm for further treatment. Ojukwu was flown out through the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

The ailing Igbo leader was brought to the Airport at 11:10 am from the University of Enugu Teaching Hospital where he was receiving treatment in the Enugu Emergency Management Rescue Unit.

The convoy of cars that brought him had three state-of-the-art ambulances, two belonging to Anambra State and one belonging to Enugu State. They entered through the Airforce wing of the airport, away from the prying eyes of journalists who had assembled at the airport as early as 6:30 am when they got the news that he would be flown to the UK , thus making it difficult to ascertain the particular ambulance that carried him.

Education / Mass Failure: Only 20 % Candidates Passed 2010 Nov/dec Wassce by winta2007(m): 12:42pm On Dec 24, 2010
Only 20.04 per cent of 310,077 candidates who sat for the Nov/Dec 2010 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) obtained five credits in English Language, Mathematics and three other subjects, therefore qualifying for admission into universities and polytechnics.

By implication, the results mean that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) recorded yet another mass failure. In Nov/Dec 2008 WASSCE, out of 372,600 candidates, only 23.54 per cent obtained five credits in English Language, Mathematics and three other subjects while in the same exam in 2009, out of 342,443 candidates, only 31 per cent (106,413) made five credits in English Language, Mathematics and three other subjects.

Announcing the release of the private candidates’ results at its Yaba headquarters in Lagos yesterday, the Head of Nigeria National Office (HNO) of WAEC, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, said 62,295 candidates made five credits in English Language, Mathematics and at least three other subjects. Giving further breakdown, Dr. Uwadiae revealed that 309, 431 candidates representing 95.21 per cent had full released results while 15,567 others (4.79 per cent) had few of their subjects still being processed because of various errors and omissions traceable to the candidates.

Politics / 2011 Presidency: Ribadu Joins Race by winta2007(m): 5:06pm On Dec 16, 2010
Former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria, (ACN), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, yesterday joined the rank of presidential aspirants who had carpeted President Goodluck Jonathan over his handling of the nation’s economy.

Making his declaration at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, Ribadu noted that the gains under the Olusegun Obasanjo administration in the area of debt servicing had been reversed under President Jonathan’s administration.
The ACN aspirant put Nigeria’s external debt figure at $32bilion dollars.

“Already, we are running a scandalous, shameful budget where over head and recurrent expenditure are at a staggering 75 percent of annual spendings, while the rest 25 percent disappear through notorious corruption.

Health / Understanding Diabetes by winta2007(m): 4:30pm On Dec 16, 2010
It is estimated that 17 million Americans are directly affected by diabetes with almost 800, 000 new cases diagnosed every year. It is also estimated that as many as one-third of these individuals may be unaware of their condition. You may be one of them.

Diabetes, also known as hyperglycemia, means that the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood is too high. You need some glucose in the blood for energy but when this amount is not properly controlled there may be serious complications. Glucose comes from the food you eat and is also produced in the liver and muscles. When glucose is produced or ingested, the organ known as the pancreas produces a hormone called insulin that allows this glucose to enter and be used by your cells. If your body does not produce enough insulin or if the insulin isn’t working the way it should, the glucose remains in the blood.

The following are some common symptoms of diabetes. You may have some or none of them before finding out that you are diabetic.
