CHIEFJACOB SOGBOYEGA ODULATE,
An exceptionally gifted man whose name and work echo into eternity. He exemplifies the hallmark of industry and entrepreneurial spirit of the Yoruba.

This great man toiled in his laboratory, writing the notes which contained the formula for what would ultimately be known as his famous patented medicine, ALABUKUN Powder. Alabukun means ‘Giver of Grace’.

The year was 1918. It was early in the evening of another hectic day at his place of work, a functional combination of office, consulting room and laboratory-cum workshop. His single minded pursuit of the goal of establishing an indigenous medical/pharmaceutical brand was legendary. He had displayed the same purposeful determination when at the age of 14, he decided to uproot himself from his ancestral town of Ikorodu and he had embarked on an exploratory journey which took him three months on foot to establish a domestic and commercial base in Abeokuta. His very modest, but cherished “headquarters” was built in the Sapon area of Abeokuta, a mere walking distance from the site of his future three-storey landmark home in Ijemo Agbadu.

A black man and member of the Yoruba ethnic group had triumphed against the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that the British colonial authorities had placed in the path of ambitious “natives”. He had penetrated the fortress of British-dominated commercial enterprise in nascent Nigeria, to become one of a very small group of Nigerian entrepreneurs in the colony. He had reasons to smile.

From the modest, but gradually escalating proceeds of the sale of Alabukun Powder, Alabukun Mentholine and other locally made products – all produced by him – the Blessed Jacob was able to realize his overarching desire, which was to underwrite all the expenses associated with sending his children to the land of the erstwhile colonial rulers, Britain, to further their education. One after the other, his offspring went off to study at Durham, Newcastle, USA and London to qualify as educationists, medical doctors, lawyers and engineers. They returned to Nigeria to join the pool of highly educated and successful professionals for which Abeokuta has been particularly famed in Nigeria history.
Alabukun’s offsprings have prospered and have made immense contributions to Yorubaland and to Nigeria in their various professions and spheres of endeavour. Amongst his children is Chief Folake Solanke SAN,who is the first Nigerian female to wear silk, became the first female Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). She also established the first law firm by a Nigerian female at Ibadan in 1966, named ‘Alabukun Chambers’.
The enduring success of the Alabukun brand is now interwoven into the fabric of modern Nigeria medical history. The Alabukun Powder in particular is displayed and sold in thousands of pharmacies, markets and roadside stalls all over Nigeria. National issues are very sensitive issues. When people due to lack of knowledge are making mockery of issues that touched lives or nations, the best is to avoid such forum.

Firstly, how much is $13 billion dollar required to stay afloat as analyzed by the economic team? The investment in Africa Financed Corporation was largely from savings made by OBJ govt, the rest equity from Nigeria belongs to some Nigerian Banks. My earlier posting in Nairaland on Senators debate on recession is repeated below;

They should deliberate on how crude oil money which was sold for $15/barrel in the late 90's, by the grace of God, suddenly skyrocketed to above $100 in 2008 and later above $140 as at 2013 with increased average daily output and open illegal bunkering under high crude oil price and the majority of the income stolen. Even under low oil price, debt was paid with excess above $50 billion left in foreign reserve by OBJ. The money above or below $30 billion left by GEJ is the remnant of the reserve OBJ left with over $20 billion already spent. How much did Obj met as debt and how much did he inherit as foreign reserve?

How much did Yar'adua/GEJ saved with $118 - $140 /barrel for so many years before the fall toward the end of 2014, nothing. They were also borrowing money at this period. El-Rufai complained about the reason for borrowing when price of crude oil was increasing, the national assembly that was also benefiting kept quiet. Stella Oduah & Diezani was prevented from facing senate panel with connivance of members and later Judiciary.

During Obj era, Mrs Bolaji Osomo appeared thrice before Senator Okechukwu Obiora led senate committe on Housing for FG houses sold to some PDP members because some senators did not benefit before she was removed. Prof Mrs Nike Grange was removed as Minister over 20million naira gift to national assembly. Openly, Stella Oduah and other cases along the zones were left to die.

The zones have insisted that the colossus robbery witnessed in the last regime should be left like that. Nigerians are complaining of hardship now, they are the most vocal in the public outcry against hardship being witnessed under this regime.

Nigeria needs to be restructured. We need to revisit the issue of Biafra again. Justice cannot be done under this arrangement. It is better to let everybody that wants to leave the federation to leave. Biafra people cannot frustrate Nigeria as a country.

If the last government with the highest barrel /day of crude oil output and the highest in world history of crude oil price / barrel could not save anything having inherited over $50 billion in foreign reserve with some other investment without paying any external debt with high level of illegal bunkering, why should we not be looking for ways to sell assets that are draining our resources as a result of bad management or too over bloated to be accountable.

Ogunjobi, 58, has served the bank for 27 years, easily the longest serving of the top executives of the bank, I think the smaller country think the OBJ figure and Nigeria (major shareholder) larger image would be difficult to control, Nigeria lost the election.

In 2015, South Africa was bitter with Nigeria over the action the GEJ led government took by recalling Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Africa over the killing of Nigerians in South Africa during the Xenophobic attacks. Before then, South African Authority had arrested a Jet used by GEJ govt officials to smuggle millions of Dollar to South Africa purportedly to buy arms. To save face the government said the Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ministry did not get approval before recalling the Ambassador, the perm sec was sacked. I would not want to dabble into that politics. Jacob Zuma knows it was a face saving action. Jacob Zuma said South Africa was not interested in having dialogue with GEJ government but would rather prefer to deal with the incoming government of Buhari. By then the election result had been out.

With the feud between Nigeria and South Africa, GEJ can never get Zuma’s support for Nigeria’s ADB presidency, especially with arrest of the private jet that smuggled dollar into South Africa and recalling of Ambassador. Now, Jacob Zuma a businessman and a very rich South African is a personal friend of Atiku Abubakar also a businessman and politician. To win the support of South Africa, Buhari as President Elect, sent Atiku to dialogue and win the support of South Africa for that post. That was it. Nigeria and South Africa are major shareholders. The politics of election is beyond any Minister. Each minister of finance represents her country. It is easier to convince their colleagues on voting pattern. The politics of selection is beyond them. He who pays the piper dictates the tunes.
