PoliticsSenator Saraki Boycotts APC Leadership Meeting To Be Chaired By VP Osibanjo by wise7(op): 11:46pm On Jun 08, 2015
A truce meeting called on Monday by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been boycotted by Senator Bukola Saraki, one of the party’s top contenders for the presidency of the Senate.

Senator Saraki boycotted the meeting after reportedly telling party leaders that as a former governor he could not attend a meeting summoned by a ‘mere commissioner’, referring to Professor Yemi Osinbajo, whose previous public office was as Commissioner of Justice in Lagos State. Saraki then became a Senator, while Osinbajo is now the Vice President.

Following Saraki’s snub, Prof. Osinbajo didn’t bother to attend the meeting, but the party met with its elected lawmakers, with some of Saraki’s earlier supporters joining the meeting.

Sources at the meeting told SaharaReporters that the leaders of the National Working Committee of the APC reaffirmed their support for candidates chosen during Saturday’s mock primaries of the party.

The Senate and the House of Representatives are expected to be inaugurated tomorrow. President Muhammad Buhari has given his blessing and dispatched a letter to the Clerk of the National Assembly asking to declare the two chambers inaugurated. Buhari is expected to return to Abuja on Tuesday evening, according presidency sources.

APC is expected to hold a final meeting tonight to prepare for the elections of its principal officers of the National Assembly tomorrow.

PoliticsI Didn’t Steal A Dime From Adamawa – Nyako by wise7(op): 6:30am On Jun 08, 2015
Former governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako has reiterated his innocence over allegations of money laundering leveled against him noting that he did not steal a dime from the purse of the state while his tenure lasted.

Nyako who made the revelation during a session with journalists shortly after his arrival in the state following his self exile, noted that he used the resources of the state judiciously, frugally and prudently adding that the feat led to serious developmental strides in the state.

He noted that he did not go on self exile due to the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), as he said he was not afraid of honouring the invitation since he has no skeleton in his cupboard but he deemed it right to leave the country following two attempts on his life.

“I must reiterate here that I did not leave this country for the fear of EFCC but I left for the safety of my dear life following two failed attempts to get me assassinated,” he said.

When asked whether some of his subordinates were responsible for the theft of public funds? Nyako said, “I can only speak for myself but I must tell you I did not steal a dime from Adamawa State.

“I don’t have a single dollar outside Nigeria. Apart from the single house I have overseas, I have not even a plot of land anywhere outside Nigeria.

“If I have stolen money, I would have stashed them away in foreign vaults,” he said.

Nyako who expressed confidence in the ability of president Muhammadu Buhari to turn around the fortunes of Nigeria noted that he has been vindicated as even International Organisations have started pointing accusing fingers on the service chiefs for committing war crimes.

Meanwhile, wild jubilation has greeted the arrival of the former governor of Adamawa State, Admiral Murtala Nyako, to Yola.

Nyako who arrived Yola International Airport Saturday was received by thousands of his supporters that came from across the state to welcome him.

PoliticsObasanjo Appointed Co-chair Of Interaction Council by wise7(op): 8:47pm On Jun 06, 2015
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is the first African to have been appointed co-chair of the InterAction Council of Former Heads of State and Government during the 32nd annual plenary meeting in Newport, United Kingdom.

Chair of the InterAction Council, a position that has been held by some of my great friends who were also my mentors over the years – Helmut Schmidt of Germany and the late Malcolm Fraser of Australia – and also to serve alongside my longtime friend Jean Chrétien, the former Prime Minister of Canada,” Obasanjo said on Friday after his appointment.

“We will continue the Council’s important work, but also look at some issues that are of particular concern to me, like youth engagement and employment. Africa has many problems but also great opportunities, and the IAC will look at both.”

Obasanjo has governed Nigeria as both the head of a military administration (1975-1979) and then as a democratically-elected civilian president (1999-2007). He was a founding member of the InterAction Council, taking leave for the years when he resumed office as president in 1999.

Obasanjo has assumed the position from Franz Vranitzky, former chancellor of Austria (1986-1997), who served as co-chair from 1 July 2010 until now.

Established in 1983, the InterAction Council of Former Heads of State and Government is an international organization addressing political, economic and social problems of the humankind. The membership is comprised of over thirty former heads of state who submit their proposals of actions directly to national and international decision-makers.

In its 32-year history, the InterAction Council has been at the forefront of many prominent issues, most notably the 1997 drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Responsibilities, a document that counterbalances the UN’s Declaration of Human Rights; the 2010 Hiroshima Declaration, a powerful plea for the abolishment of nuclear weapons; and the 2012 report, The Global Water Crisis: Addressing an Urgent Security Issue.

SportsPremier League To Be Sponsorless From 2016/2017 by wise7(op): 10:33am On Jun 05, 2015
The move reflects the organisation's desire to mirror major American sports leagues like the NBA and NFL in presenting a 'clean' brand.

Having been sponsored by Barclays since 2004, in 2016 the competition will be known simply as 'The Premier League'.

Premier League sources have stressed their new sponsorship strategy will not impinge on their clubs' ability to pursue their own individual commercial models.

"Barclays has been an excellent partner for the League throughout their sponsorship of the competition and we look forward to working with them in 2015/16, the final season of their title sponsorship."

The Premier League did not have a title sponsor in its inaugural 1992/93 season of before signing a four-year deal with brewers Carling - at the time the biggest in British sport.

Carling subsequently paid triple its initial amount to secure a four-year extention to their original deal, before Barclaycard took over in a three-year contract beginning in 2001.

Barclays agreed an initial three-year sponsorship deal in 2004 and subsequent extensions saw the value rise to a £120million paid for the existing three-year sponsorship in 2012.

However the bank indicated in March that they would not seek to renew the deal when it expires at the end of the 2015/16 season.
