Igbo people asked for Biafra, Nigeria refused and said the country must be one. Danish man draws cartoon of Mohammed in faraway Denmark, you people go around killing Igbos and destroying their properties in the North. Philips Emegwali invents a super-fast computer, you said a "Nigerian" invents. Igbo student in diaspora makes good grades, you said a "Nigerian" graduates top of the class. But Ikechukwu Abia is caught trafficking drugs, you said an "Igbo" man is caught with drugs abroad. Igbo man do his business and prosper, you people said they want to steal your land and rule over you. 90% of oil blocs in the South are owned by Northerners, you people do not say they have stolen someone's land and resources. Igbos ask for the Presidency, you people laugh at them and say "over your dead body." The North has rule Nigeria for over 38years and they keep threatening everyone else that they are being marginalized, and so they start bombing everywhere, you people say let's negotiate with them. Igbos vote for Jonathan, you people said they are myopic and tribalistic. The North and the West voted for Buhari, you people said it is called "change" and democracy. Igbos rally behind Jimi Abaje, you people said they will drown in the lagoon. Ambode won, you people start cursing them. Adamu Ciroma and co said "The North would make this country ungovernable if a Northerner does not become President" and "They'll be no Nigeria if power does not return to the North". You people call them "Elder Statesmen","Party Stalwart", "Northern leader", etc. Nnamdi Kanu says the same thing but you people call him "a retard", "treasonable criminal", "war-monger", "evil" and so on. During the last elections, Radio and TV stations in the North play jihad songs while making anti-GEJ campaigns, say all sorts of things in Hausa, no newspaper headline asked for them to be banned. Of course you people call it politics. Radioactivity Biafra does same, all hell is let loose. You people say they spreading bigotry and dangerous propaganda. Do you people have an IGBOPHOBIA? Of course not! No one will agree. But do you think the Igbos are problems, everyone will raise their hands. But we ask, why don't you let the Igbos separate and go their way, you people give me that terrorist look. Dear landlords, just one question: What do you want the Igbos to do to please you? #my_point_of_still_remains_with_me---- #copied |

The International Foundation for Electoral
Systems (IFES) will honour former Chairman
Attahiru Jega of Nigeria’s Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC), House Democratic
Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Congressman
Ed Royce (R-Calif.) with its 2015 Charles T.
Manatt Democracy Award. They will receive the
award at a special ceremony co-chaired by IFES
Board Director and Baker & Hostetler LLP Partner
Ambassador Tom McDonald and Manatt, Phelps
& Phillips LLP Partner June L. DeHart on
September 29, in Washington D.C.
“Chairman Jega’s leadership was instrumental to
Nigeria’s successful general elections in 2015,”
said IFES President and CEO Bill Sweeney. “He
deserves full credit for his efforts to increase the
credibility and transparency of the electoral
process under extreme logistical challenges,
such as terrorist threats from Boko Haram,
where failure could prove the catalyst for
predicted election violence,” added Sweeney.
Jega’s expert management of the 2015 general
elections positioned him as a credible election
administrator. The complex Nigerian electoral
environment consisted of 69 million eligible
voters, 155,000 polling booths and 700,000
temporary staff deployed across the country.
These recent elections resulted in the country’s
first democratic transfer of power.
“I am deeply honored to accept the 2015
Democracy Award from IFES. INEC’s long-
standing partnership with IFES in preparation for
the 2015 general elections resulted in a credible
process accepted by Nigerian citizens and the
international community.
These elections have put Nigeria on the right
path toward democratic stability,” said Chairman
Jega.
Leader Pelosi is the Democratic Leader of the
U.S. House of Representatives for the 114th
Congress. From 2007 to 2011, Leader Pelosi
served as Speaker of the House, the first woman
to do so in American history. For 28 years,
Leader Pelosi has represented San Francisco,
California’s 12th District in Congress. She has led
House Democrats for more than a decade and
previously served as House Democratic Whip.
During her nearly three decades in Congress,
Leader Pelosi has been a leading advocate for
women’s empowerment and gender equality. |
Gregory Erhabor is the founder and Project
Coordinator, Asthma and Chest Care Foundation;
Consultant Chest Physician and immediate past
President of Nigerian Thoracic Society and
professor of Medicine, Obafemi Awolowo
University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. He spoke to
PAUL ADUNWOKE on management of chest
diseases and asthmatic patients.
Why your interest in thoracic/chest medicine?
THERE is increasing pollution in the country and
many have taken to smoking, thus manifesting
chest diseases like chronic obstructive lung
disease, occupational lung diseases and
worsening cases of asthma.
Moreover, a disease like tuberculosis is one of
the leading infectious diseases in the world and
Nigeria is one of the high burden countries. It’s
rather unfortunate that a number of politicians,
men of God, commissioners and big men in this
country have died of Asthma, lung cancer and
other chest diseases, yet only a few is aware
that these diseases can be prevented and
properly managed.
That is why Asthma and Chest Care Foundation
(ACCF) was established to provide patient care,
education, pursue research, train health
professionals and offer philanthropic programmes
for patients with asthma – free distribution of
asthma drugs and information materials – in
order to ensure that no life is lost as a result of
asthma or other chest conditions again in
Nigeria.
We encourage all patients and individuals
with cough of more than two to three weeks,
sputum production, haemoptysis (coughing out of
blood), chest wall pain, noisy breathing,
breathlessness, frequent colds, loss of weight,
loss of appetite, fever and night sweats to report
to the nearest health facility for necessary tests.
Let’s take a look at the statistics: about 10 to 15
million Nigerians are suffering from asthma. In
our study among University undergraduates
between the ages of 15 – 35yrs in Southwestern
Nigeria, we reported a prevalence of 18.7 per
cent. Again, 14.1per cent of the respondents had
probable asthma while another 4.3per cent had
suspected asthma totaling 18.7 per cent.
A number of them, living with the condition have
not been diagnosed and many remain untreated.
In the past, asthma was seen as a disability but
today, with proper treatment and preventive
measures, asthma can be controlled. Hence, the
awareness by the foundation aims at educating
and ensuring that patients are free from asthma.
By doing this, the number of asthmatic patients
presenting with life threatening symptoms will
reduce and patients will be properly diagnosed.
I have other programmes on heart and lungs-
related diseases but what inspired me for the
asthma prevention and management initiative is
the fact that people always talk about treatment
and cure for diseases but nobody talks about
prevention.
Again, there are few places around, where one
can get proper treatment. I believe it’s much
easier to prevent diseases than to cure them. So,
my focus had been on possible ways of stopping
the disease; finding better ways to help patients
in this fight for breath. Topmost on my mind is a
question like ‘how can I ensure they lived a
better life?’
As a response to this, I resorted to educating
asthmatic patients and those with other chest
conditions, like Tuberculosis, lung cancer and
pneumonia among others. And to achieve these,
I embarked on advocacy and organising training
for medical doctors so as to ensure that those
with chest and lungs-related diseases have what
it takes to live a healthy life.
We partner with other organisations, NGOs and
other institutions to help achieve these goals.
They include; American College of Chest
Physicians, American Thoracic Society, Breathe
Easy Foundation, UK
etc.
How severe can asthma attack be and how does
chest medicine handle the challenges?
Severe attacks are common causes of death
from Asthma and one of the major problems is
that asthmatic patients are unable to recognise
the seriousness of these attacks. However, a
number of pointers could help in determining
whether or not, an attack is severe.
If these pointers were well understood and
monitored by asthmatic patients, a drastic
decrease in mortality rates would be recorded.
They need to watch out, for an increased
frequency in night attacks, that is, waking up
more than once at night because of wheeze,
cough or difficulty in breathing.
Again, asthma attack presents increasing
limitation in day-to-day activities such as,
climbing stairs, cooking and other household
chores is noticed. Another pointer is increased
dependence on bronchodilators – drugs that
opens the airways. For instance, using inhaler,
between four and six times a day is a sign of a
severe attack.
Other things to watch out for are fever,
infections of the throat, sinuses and lungs; all of
which may trigger a severe attack. Deterioration
of peak flow reading and bluish appearance of
the tongue, lips and fingertips are also to be
observed. |
Satguru Maharaji ji, the founder of One Love
Family, has advised President Muhammadu
Buhari to use traditional means to tackle the
Boko Haram insurgency.
Maharaj ji gave the advice on Sunday in Ibadan
at a press conference to mark the 35th
anniversary of the One Love Family in Nigeria.
He said that this approach became necessary in
order to overcome the incessant killing of
innocent people by the terrorist group.
Maharaji ji said traditional leaders have some
powerful traditional deities that could help find
solution to the Boko Haram insurgency within
weeks.
“If the traditional leaders are involved in the
process of addressing the issue, the crisis will
soon be forgotten.
“The president needs to consult people such as
me and other traditional leaders to break the
myth surrounding the Boko Haram terrorist
movement.
“They do not know the teachings of Islam and
need to be dealt with traditionally because they
are being used by some people and they use
religion as a cover to create trouble,’’ Maharaj ji
said.
Maharaj ji lauded Buhari for his initiative on
salary cut, adding that more steps needed to be
taken in reducing the cost of governance.
He also advised Buhari to set up a Salary
Restructure Committee to look into the salaries
and allowances of the President, Vice President,
members of the National Assembly and ministers
with a view to reducing their emoluments.
“The committee would come out with a uniform
salary scale and allowances that would not be as
much as the present one.
“This would be better than an individual cutting
his salary and the others not doing so.
“The money generated from this reduction can
be used for development projects that would
have direct impact on the ordinary masses,’’ he
said.
He also urged the president to monitor the
constituency allowances being given to the
National Assembly members by ensuring that the
money was being used judiciously.
“In order to eradicate corruption, the politicians
should be made to swear with the god of iron
instead of using Quran and Bible during their
inauguration.
“This will bring sanity into the system and
prevent political office holders from stealing
public funds because thunder will strike the
thieves among them to death instantly,’’ he said.
The One Love Family leader warned against
same sex marriage, saying it should not be
allowed in Africa as it remains a taboo on the
continent.
