OP, I don't think Indian garri should not be imported.

I think you're missing the big picture. It seems like this might be an Indian delicacy ( it might taste different).

Since a lot of Indians live in Nigeria, it makes sense that there's a store that imports Indian food and sells it here.

Same thing that happens in places like Canada or even the U.S. using indomie as an example, there are local noodles but Nigerians might prefer to buy indomie.


It will become a problem, if your local market was selling imported garri from India instead of Nigerian garri, not a fancy store. I really doubt that imported Indian garri is sold at the local market. This is not something to shout about.

Imagine if oyinbo countries start banning specialty stores from selling egusi , pepper or crayfish. I'm not sure it will go over well.

Here is a product produced outside Nigeria, without NAFDAC number, but on sale in supermarkets in Nigeria in the last 3yrs in Lagos and other State capitals in Nigeria. Yet Start up entrepreneurs and small scale industries in Nigeria are slammed with near impossible conditions for production, while these stringent conditions and other factors that bother on the peculiarities of our business environment challenges tend to jack up the cost of production within the country, faceless diaspora producers who most times have no iota of regulations and standards to follow, come up with their cheaply produced but substandard products, to compete with local producers who have been subjected to all degrees of near production impossibilities.

The multiplier effect of this uneven playing ground are indeed grave; Locally produced food items would not be able to favourably compete with these substandard death traps from outside the shores of our country, the proceeds of our patronage will be ploughed back into developing another economy at the expense of ours, and thereby instituting the 21st century version of colonialism (this time painfully by nations much smaller, and with far less development potentials).

This is both a call to reason, and collective action. while it is true that so many other things are wrong with the management of the Nigerian State needing attention in the class of an emergency, there is no department of patriotism, responsibility and national pride, that is headquartered in silence, sarcasm or even hollow and vain arguments. Today more than ever before we must unite as a people to call a spade its real name, and chart a new cause that would spell progress in all its manifestations for our dear country.

Do you see the foreign groundnut (ritebrand PEANUT) ,cashewnut, banana, irish potatoes, etc there are lots of thimgs they sale in those shops that you can get easily in naija market but packaging and nutritional analysis is what is lacking.

Isnt it also possible that an indian is processing it and packaging right here in nigeria? Would that make bad then?

Those blaming NAFDAC or Customs are vexing with the wrong people. They should take responsibility if they are that bothered because we are all collectively responsible. for the rot in the country Remember Lassa fever caused by RATS peeing on garri dried out in the open? In the centuries we have been making garri, All our businessmen traders and farmers have not been able to find a hygienic way of producing our garri. Are we waiting for govt to establish garri factory for us? Nigerians did not spot the opportunity the Indians spotted because they were busy praying, when a foreigner spots it , we start to vex, make noise but guess what...nothing changes!!!!


We are a use a useless bunch of people. Instead of tacking our problems head on we are all praying, why won't we be importing garri and petrol?

The problems we are witnessing are a reflection of the average Nigerian. This is a failed country, better come to terms with it. Health system, education, transport are non-existent, you are importing palm oil, petrol, tomatoes you are worried about garri. Abeg smell the coffee, the horse has left the stable!!!


Spare me the bullshit, the same people complaining are the same people that will refuse to eat local rice. Firstly why is he/she blaming NAFDAC AND Customs. Is the garri unsafe? Is Garri banned? NafDacs job is to make sure food sold in Nigeria is safe for consumption, Customs job is to make sure banned items don't get in. So again I ask you,..... is garri banned?

As far as National shame, let me point you in the direction of imported petrol and diesel. I think you should ficus your energies more on the big national disgrace which is spending over half of your forex importing petroleum products.


We have bigger fish to worry about than imported garri.

The strangest thing about African countries is that you will find that import of such foods from any African country is illegal, while Indians, Chinese, Europeans et al can dump whatever foods they do not intend to eat on us with no restrictions.

Many of our people cherish imported products so it might not be out of place for the expatriates to package in made in India bags. The whole scenario is worth investigating to ascertain the true story. The analysis will surely help our entrepreneurial decision making in that industry. Let's take it up seriously

The cost of production of most agricultural goods in some countries are cheaper compared to Nigeria....in Thailand, and Indonesia... Their budget for the agric sector is high compared to ours here.. There are even subsidized...so if you allow them they can sell at a cheap rate and still make profit..people will patronize them and before you know ii our local industries are dead.... THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING TO THE RICE INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA...

People patronizing these goods that we have comparative advantage are part of our problems in this country. This is sad!

The govt welcomes these nationalities with open hands and they get away with anything in this country.
