@idowu. This guy got no suckers to sell, his just looking for what to eat. He knows nothing can you imagine him saying total setup for 25 acres of plantain including land, borehole and irrigation is N4,044,000 meaning you need just N161,760 per acre. Na beans, you need more than that to do cucumber per acre.

1. How do you intend to use N250,000 to do land preparation for 25 acres?
2. How will you do land preparation without land clearing?
3. You never made mention of soil test in order to determined the suitability of the proposed farmland or do you think plantain can just be planted anywhere?
I bet you know nothing about this crop called plantain or you are a backyard farmer.

Capital Expenditure and Cost Analysis For Plantain Plantation of 10,040 Hybrid Suckers on a 10 Hectares of Land In Nigeria.

Considering an ideal spacing capacity of 1004 Suckers of plantain on an hectare. This cost analysis is focused on 10 Hectares.
Given: An hectare to be = 2½ Acres,
and an Acre to be = 6 plots of standard 60ft X 120ft; and an hectare = 15 plots. Therefore 15 plots X 10 Hectares = 150 plots.
therefore, 10 Hectares = 25 Acres = 150 plots.
Here is the total expenditure and cost breakdown.
1. Land: #1.5 million naira at #150,000 Naira per hectare.
2. Land Preparation: #250,000 Naira
3. Hybrid Suckers of IITA standard (10,040): #1,004,000 Naira at #100 per sucker.
4. Planting: #100,000 Naira.
5. Herbicides: #250,000 Naira.
6. Employment of farm hands: #240,000 Naira,
7. Procurement of
fertilizers: #100,000 Naira.
8. Miscellaneous Expenses, T fare, farm tools & Wheel barrow: #100,000 Naira
9. Pre investment expenses: #100,000 Naira
10. Borehole or Irrigation: #500,000 Naira.
Total expenses if the Land were bought= #4,044,000 million.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT:
If its on a rented land at the cost of #50,000 naira for 10 hectares per year, it would be= #2,594,000 Naira. Considering that plantain fruits every 3 to 4 months, you can harvest at least 3 times a year from a tree. if a stick is sold at #800 Naira, then 10,040 x 800= #8,032,000 x 3 = #24,096,000 Naira.
therefore, Return on investment = #24,096,000 - #4,044,000 = #20,052,000 annually. Alternatively, if a stick is sold at #500 Naira, then 10,040 suckers x 500 sticks= #5,020,000 x 3 = #15,060,000 Naira
therefore, Return on Investment = #15,060,000 - #4,044,000 = #11,016,000 Naira.

Its so unfortunate that we still have information marketers trying to post on agriculture section of this forum. Please if you are intrested in commercial plantain cultivation with best agronomy procedure you will spend between N300,000- N450,000 excluding land depending on your location.

Then I saw you stated that the planting can be done at anytime of the year with proper irrigation. What type of irrigation technique would you recommend? How expensive is it?

Do you take up farm management or only help with setting it up?

1. Your farm yield will be determined by a lot of things just follow the agronomy best practice procedures.
2. I use spray tube irrigation system
3. We don't do farm management for projects less than 10 heacters because it will be too expensive for the investor, what we do is to train the farm owner or his/her staffs on how to manage the farm.

NIGERIA ASSOCIATION OF PLANTAIN AND BANANA STAKEHOLDERS
Over the years, Nigeria has been one of the highest producers of plantain and banana yet this noble produce has never been exported, production remained irrational as its either too much in the market at some times causing glut and wastage or very scarce at other times becoming expensive.

There is no clear policy from the government on the industry though individuals have embarked on massive campaign for increase in production and the potentials in the industry, government has played negligible role in the production, processing and marketing of the crop that has been tagged has the third staple food in the country.

Cooperatives and associations on these crops are hardly heard or known. It is out of passion for these crops and the huge potential the industry can impact on the economy of the country especially now that its struggling that this association is founded to create a new course and way forward.

The aims and objectives of this association are:

1. To organise all existing and intending plantain and banana farmers, processors and marketers.
2. To provide a forum or avenue where members can speak with one voice.
3. To set and improve the standard of production, processing and marketing of plantain and banana which are given to the public, ensure even distribution of produce and maintain fair price profitable to stakeholders and convenient for buyers.
4. To improve plantain and banana industry education at all levels throughout the federation.
5. To participate in planning, policy making and administration of plantain and banana industry at all levels of government.
6. To provide a forum whereby understanding, fellowship and unity can be achieved and maintained at all times amongst all members of plantain and banana industry stakeholders.
7. To raise the status of plantain and banana industry, seek loans, grants and incentives from government, non governmental organisations, financial institutions and international donors.
8. To extend protection:- legal or otherwise.
9. To uphold the international standard of cultivation, harvesting, processing and marketing of plantain and banana to facilitate exportation and balance of trade.
10. To affiliate with All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) and or fraternize with any other association relevant to plantain and banana industry in Nigeria and international bodies with similar aims and objectives.
11. To establish and maintain good relationship with members of the public, other commodity associations and all levels of government.
12. To establish and maintain good relationship with plantain and banana industry stakeholders in Africa, Commonwealth and other parts of the world.
13. To operate benefit schemes for the members as may be decided by the National Executive council from time to time.
