ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(op): 2:58pm On Oct 24, 2010
@GA: Well said. Lets begin work on the level. For now our objective should be to:

1. Create a level
2. Create simple camera
3. Allow movement around level

Lets try to achieve this in 1 week.

I will create a SourceForge account when i am on my pc,if you can you can set it up.
,
Are we using Unity's terrains or we are just building d world from blender, cus i see in your attached image u may have done that from blender. I will suggest we only use blender to model and import into unity, that way we can scale acurately.
----
Still figuring out texturing,
ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(op): 11:15am On Oct 24, 2010
@GA: No problems, i agree with the simple idea. We need to have a plan on how the level will look like,for instance, where will the player's employers stay, the arrangements of building etc. I suggest we draw a plan for the level,it will show where house A or B should be place, the routes/roads needs to be planed well too. I will post a small demo map later today.

We need an efficient way to share our files. We can do that on sourceforge but the game will be public since its SF is an open source platform.

Meanwhile, i am modelling a 6 room 'face me i face you' building then i will go find a tutorial on texturing.

------------
Or are we just creating just anyhow environment?
ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(op): 6:43am On Oct 24, 2010
@GA: Will the need for a licence arise when we do not plan to sell the game? And i dont think having a player meet people like GTA will be too hard to implement programmatically. We dont have to use apples ipad,iphone it was just an example though. Having sure rewards can only make the game experience better. By aquiring such rewards, he's 'Rep Rank' gets higher or we can make him need d rewards in other missions. I believe this first leve isl where we should test stuffs.

, And I dont like the way your response sounds, dnt give d idea that i dnt know what im talking about, we just contributing ok.

For the camera, we can attach the camera to a cylinder and apply collision detectors to the cylinder and let the cylinder follow the player. I think that will solve d camera problem.
ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(op): 6:48pm On Oct 23, 2010
@GA:
Great i love it. I have further refined it this way.

In the begining,player has to live his apartment and head for the newspaper stand or a job agency to find a job.

He finds a job and has to go to the address to meet with is future employer.

He is offered the job.The employer gives him products(legal or contraband) to sell to specific people over a period of time. if he fails he doesnt get paid or he is fired.

As he engages in his missions,he encounters gangs,police,robbers,money making ventures(gambling or crime).

Proceeding with the mission, he meets new characters interested in offering him jobs(GTA Style). He also obtains/picks things(weapons,money etc) during missions.

He is awarded money,clothings,gadgets(Iphone,ipad,car etc) on completion of tasks.

He may decide to later sell his rewards for money, remember his main objective for the first level is to come up with his First year college tuition.

He can also participate in search competitions with AI characters for rewards.

----
so now we need a to model his house,newspaper stand,etc

ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(op): 11:19pm On Oct 22, 2010
@GA: Yes its a really large map.

I agree with starting from the residential area near the soccer field but i think it is too small for the first level though. We can just make that area and test other functionalities there before expanding the level. I made the house in blender, exported it in .fbx format for Unity.

At the moment i am still figuring out how i can make gutters/drainages(normal naija stuff) and how to make roads.

We need to have an idea of how the scene will look like, what kind of houses(face-me-i-face you, 1-2 storey build,church,school). Remember we talked about creating a naija kind of scene.

We need to know how and where we will be placing them assuming we are focusing on just the Residential area near the soccer field.

I will come up with a sketched arrangement plan for the Residential area tomorrow.

Cheers

Working on the level. Early screens

Note: Note naija themed yet. We need to discuss that. We will need 3D modelers to achieve that. Well sha,

@GraphM

When i am done, will post screenies for every to see and i will upload the files. I cannot tell when precisely,but i am working on it.

@GA: where you at? Hope ur registration is going well.

I will post an image the map i sketched for this level later. So any1 can work on it too or make changes.

Cheers.

@GraphMoney

welcome to the team. We are always happy to have people who will contribute and not just view pages.

I believe the reason for the slow progress is as as a result of the factors pointed out by Graphmoney(for me its time and bandwidth). I also think the lack of leadership role in the team is another reason. Atleast, we need someone to do the bossing around thing.

I think we have a great engine to work with. I have a demo map that i sketched, i am currently trying to understand terrains,skyboxes. By the time i am ok learning, i will attempt to implement my map in Unity after which i will use primitives like spheres to act as placeholders to buildings.

Cheers.

@GA:

A simple dialog system will be needed, maybe it will be in the form of notes or we'll just prevent the player from entering inputs then toggle the camera to show their faces while they interact. I think there are plugins for this though. I am currently drawing up a map and at the same time learning blender. I will post what i have done later today.

@Pheeque
Very cool of you. We'll do our best with the game plan and yes see you at the top bro.

ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(op): 10:18am On Oct 03, 2010
OK, here is what i got.
-------------------------------------------

LEVEL 1

Primary Mission :

1. Find a Job
2. Go on Sales/Search mission
3. Earn and raise tuition money

Game Environmental Features and Player Interaction

The environment for the level one should be a mixture of urban and rural. This depicts the financial state of the player according to the storyline in Page 2. So we will replicate the looks of our cities/towns in Nigeria, such as Ajegunle, Shitta etc.

Below are some of the details I came up with at the moment:

NOTE: [1] represents a legend for players interaction with Object/Effect/Character.

GAME ENVIRONMENT

1. Police and Check Points:

a) Bribes can be collected   [1]
b) Police aggression/assault  [2]
c) Arrest on suspicion of weapon possession etc [3]
d) Interrogations on source of merchandise [4]

2. Area Boys/Criminals:

a) Criminals/hoodlums trying to steal merchandise [5]
b)Criminals/hoodlums trying to extort money [6]
c) Criminals who just want to fight [7]
d)Gang fights in the streets [8]
e) Criminals/Troublemakers throwing insulting words [9]

3. People:

a) People and Women Talking [10]
b) Police chasing criminals  [11]
c) Robberies taking place
d) People queuing up
e) Students walking
f) Hawkers everywhere
g) Markets
h) Cars, Bikes, Keke Napep moving around

4. Structures:

a) Residential buildings with gutters/drainage (closed or opened)
b) Business Centers
c) Shops/Kiosks
d) Bridges
e) Schools
f) Brothels  [12]
e) Roads

5. Land Marks:

a) Bushes, Small/Large Forest
b) Rivers

Player Interaction:

[1]. Player encounters a police asking for bribe. He may decide to give him from his savings which he needs to pay for his fee, run or attack the police.
[2]. Player may decide to fight or run.
[3]. If player gets caught with weapons. He may be arrested and he may loose some money to the police
[4]. Player can tell a lie or he can give a bribe or he can just run off
[5]. Player can resist by fighting, running
[6]. Player can give money to the criminals, to avoid problems. He can also try to run, find a new way to pass.
[7]. Player has to fight back or still try to run
[8]. If he gets close, he may caught in the fighting frenzy
[9]. Player can also insult, then he may provoke them and then he has to fight them or pay them off
[10]. Player can ask for directions etc
[11]. Player can help police and get reward
[12]. Player can spend some money here.

These are some of the details I could think of for now. But we do not have to include everything though. We also need to plan how the map of our level will look like. I would suggest we study a Google Map of a Nigerian location, so we can have an idea of how to make the level, place houses , bridges, markets, forest/bushes, mission spots etc.

Like I said before, we don’t have to start with all the models, we should use stuffs like boxes, cylinders to represent some models till we have them. I am sure by the time we have a good looking level, we'll see good and serious modellers joining the team. We are being watched big time.

I will look at a Google Map and try to come up with a map for our first level as a suggestion. I think Maxim and  Pheeque can still play around with the engine, you need some level of understanding in other to work with the scripts. The GUI and the scripts work together(Thanks to unity3D for this).

Will download the book tonight. I dont know of any tutorial on texturing but i believe you can get them by doing a google search. I am still playing around with unity3d gui, not doing anything specific yet. It seems like you are having a really hard time with your actor/model, is it the animation? Have you asked for help from the community? Or maybe you are going about it the hard way. Waiting to see some breakthroughs from your end o.

@Everyone
At the moment, looks like its GameAddict and i who have downloaded Unity3D. Please lets all have our copies. Its not cool to indicate your interest and not follow us.

Alright, it is evident that the initial idea of creating a 3D game will go on. We will continue with Unity, the engine which we have decided to work with. All team members are expected to have a copy of Unity 3D which can be downloaded from their site http://unity3d.com . Then, we can then use the resources cited by GameAddict for learning.

This is a message sent to me by kenbox

Hello, World Best.

Thanks for your mail,
Sorry for my in-activeness of late in the 3D game project.
I totally agree with the reasons you specified as the main reasons why we've not made appreciable progress yet.

I believe that, we can still make it if we still strive towards it. If it's made more of a learning experience than of a business (Product) venture.

Most good software (open-source) started like so, not really as a project with targets but as a learning and challenging experience.

Imagine the break through we will accomplish if we successfully launch a playable game (3D, say PS1 level) on PC, we will automatically become the pioneers of the game industry in Nigeria (west africa).

I have no objection towards making a web based game (Because it's still a similar process just change of tools), but I would advice against distractions.

And Again, I strongly Advice we have a way of meeting (preferably virtual) say via IRC Yahoo so that we could collab @ realtime.

we should also think about hosting code,   important.

I am constrained now, I will become available by early November and would have some code to show.

Thanks Once Again
Looks like we have different opinions on the kind of game to make. How many of us still think we should move on with the 3D game development or branch to a browser based game/social game, one that will take less time to develop?

If we decide to continue with the 3D game. We'll need an engine with a lot of resources which i think Unity may not have.
If we decide to go with a browser game, are we going to do a simple puzzle game or a rpg?
ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(op): 12:45am On Sep 30, 2010
@Pheeque

I stopped the development sometime ago. I found out that i was just reinventing something that was already available for use which is sourceforge. We will be able to manage the project once we create a sourceforge project and hosted discussion board. Then we can make use of facebook for quick communication because i believe many of us are active facebook users.

Basically, we can have a combine of existing technologies to do the job for us.

@Gega

Welcome to the group. We are about to make a big change to our previously stated targets and ideas, so we will be needing ideas and suggestion on a browser-based game. Your being a graphics artist is a plus to the team. If you dont mind, can you post some artworks or any graphics you have created here to further inspire others especially our other artists. Thanks and welcome to the team.

@All

Are we in total support of a browser based game? We need to decide immediately. I am currently working on a storyline and i will post it once am done. Please send in your storyline as soon as you can.

I will create a post in the Graphics sections to try and get some more graphics artist to join us. I will also send a notification message to the rest of the team right away.

Alright, i'l be back,

cheers
ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(op): 10:22pm On Sep 27, 2010
@Maxim: Nice to know you agree with me. Thanks

@GA: Great! I think we can create something like mafiawars, we write our storyline, we can have maybe 10 missions on each level. We will display images/illustrations to give the users visual feeling, then we place the UI element/controls at a particular area. As for platforms, we can integrate with Facebook, MySpace, Tagged, Yahoo!.  I believe this will be a very interesting project and the amount of contribution will get will be enough because we will be using popular web technologies.

I would say for those of us who haven't played the MafiaWar game. we should take sometime to try it out. After which we will talk about storyline.

We'll need really good digital artists/painters.
ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(op): 10:54pm On Sep 26, 2010
Its nice to know that this project is still alive. I am really sorry for my inability to contribute all this time, i have been really busy with other projects. Gameaddict, you are really doing well with unity, that is really great.

I would like us yo review the whole idea, it seams we are all trying to learn the technologies we plan to use. Its will be very difficult to combine learning and working on this project at the same time as not many of us will have that patience.

My suggestion is, since most of our team members are equipped with the knowledge of HTML, PHP, JAVASCRIPT etc we can consider starting with browser based games which at the moment have a really great market. Google Zynga and their mafia wars,farmville etc to see their successes. The artists in the team can help with graphics/art. All we need is a good storyline, keep it social and integrate it with facebook or other social sites. Do you know that about 200 million people play social games on facebook alone?

I think this is a more feasible idea. We can still continue to learn what ever engine we decide to use later. The reason we have not done anything tangible is because we are still learning which will take time. Besides, i dont think there are really good tutorials for unity except the paid ones.

This is just my suggestion, if you guys agree with me we can move on with it.

What do you think?
