#EndSARS: Court Adjourns Suit On Attacks On Media Freedom, As SERAP Seeks Probe Of False Posting

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed “to probe false posting on the Ministry’s official Twitter handle of court proceedings in a lawsuit against him and the National Broadcasting Commission [NBC], asking the court to declare arbitrary, illegal, and unconstitutional the N9m fines imposed on Channels TV, AIT and Arise TV over their coverage of the #EndSARS protests, and to stop the NBC from collecting the money.”

According to SERAP: “The Ministry of Information and Culture had after the court hearing last Friday posted on its Twitter handle a story falsely claiming that the suit had been dismissed. But contrary to the report, the suit, which came up for hearing at the Federal High Court [Court 10] Abuja, was adjourned to Wednesday, 10 March 2021 for the hearing of SERAP’s originating summons and the preliminary objections filed by the NBC and its Director-General.”

In a statement today by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization said: “While there is a legitimate public interest in informing the public about court proceedings, any such reporting ought to accurately reflect the proceedings. It’s deeply disappointing that the Ministry, which is yet to file any court process in response to the suit, posted and promoted on its Twitter handle a story claiming that the suit against it and the NBC had been struck out.”

US Places 15 African Countries On $15,000 B1-B2 Visa Bond

The outgoing administration of U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday issued a new temporary rule that could require tourist and business travellers from two dozen countries, mostly in Africa, to pay a bond of as much as $15,000 to visit the United States.

The U.S. State Department said the temporary final rule, which takes effect Dec. 24 and runs through June 24, targets countries whose nationals have higher rates of overstaying B-2 visas for tourists and B-1 visas for business travellers. The Trump administration said the six-month pilot program aims to test the feasibility of collecting such bonds and will serve as a diplomatic deterrence to overstaying the visas.

Trump, who lost a re-election bid earlier this month, made restricting immigration a central part of his four-year term in office. President-elect Joe Biden, a Democrat, has pledged to reverse many of the Republican president’s immigration policies, but untangling hundreds of changes could take months or years.

Lekki Shootings: Activist Cautions FG, CNN Against Confrontation

A right activist, Comrade Omolola Olukayode, has cautioned the Federal Government and the Cable Network (CNN), against confrontation over the alleged shooting and killing of the #EndSARS protesters by the military at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos on Tuesday, October 20, this year.

Olukayode, who is the Convener of Nigeria Peace Advocacy Group (NPAG), made the call in a media chat in Lagos Monday, where he made it clear that confrontational attitude and hardliner posture in resolving the imbroglio would rather be counter-productive than yielding positive result!

The youthful activist believes that, the viable option for the resolution of the issue lies in the application of tact and high degree of diplomacy by the two sides, admonishing that, since a panel of enquiry has been set up and already listening and collecting memoranda, anybody with anything to say about the matter should make themselves to the panel.

Investigation: N2 billion Abandoned, Non-existent NDDC Road Projects In Edo Communities

It was 2:27 pm on a sunny Tuesday in September when the reporter arrived at Deaconess Rose Arasomwan’s provision store at Amawu Street.

She had attended to only three customers since 6:00 am when she opened her small provision store in front of her house located along the road.

She told the reporter that her business crashed since the beginning of the 2020 rainy season as customers find it difficult to visit her provision storebecause the road was now waterlogged.

The deep waterlogged portionstarts a few meters away from the entrance of the street to Arasomwan’s provision store.

The problem is not just about her business, “water from the road floods my entire house whenever it rains,” she lamented.

The signpost at the entrance of the street shows that the road project was awarded to Derants System Limited and the reporterconfirmed it was awarded at the sum of N249 million. Residents said the contractor, completed work on it in July 2019. However, the road has become impassable.

Although the beginning to the end of the road is less than 2 kilometers, tricyclists chargebetween N500 to N1000.

Nairaland / General / Recession: SERAP Asks Buhari To Cut Cost Of Governance, Not Public Services by Worldtopnewsng: 11:09am On Nov 22, 2020
Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sent an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari urging him “to put the country’s resources at the service of human rights, and to support the less well-off to enjoy an adequate standing of living through cutting the cost of governance and implementing bold transparency and accountability measures in your government’s response to Nigeria’s second recession in five years.”

In the letter dated 21 November, 2020 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization said: “This economic crisis provides an opportunity to prioritise access of poor and vulnerable Nigerians to basic socio-economic rights, and to genuinely recommit to the fight against corruption. The country cannot afford getting back to business as usual.”

SERAP said: “Implementing human rights, transparency and accountability measures would save money, address projected adverse human rights impacts of the recession, and fast-track the economic recovery process. It is not too late to take urgent measures that would put the country’s wealth and resources to work for the common good of all Nigerians.”

According to SERAP: “Decades of mismanagement and corruption, and deep-seated deficiencies in public financial management have directly contributed to higher levels of borrowing and public debts, and consequently, the economic recession. Successive governments have squandered the promise afforded by the country’s natural wealth and resources.”

The letter, read in part: “The paltry resources Nigeria invests in essential public goods and services that would benefit ordinary Nigerians can be partly explained by the high spending of public funds to finance a life of luxury for members of the National Assembly, state governors, and other powerful politicians.”

The speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has confirmed that one of his security aides shot and killed a newspaper vendor at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja on Thursday.

In a statement on his twitter, he said that he stopped, as usual, to exchange pleasantries with the newspaper vendors in the area, but unidentified men obstructed the convoy which got the attention of security men in the convoy who shot into the air to disperse them.

“A horrible incident has taken place. This evening, as I left the National Assembly, I stopped, as usual, to exchange pleasantries with the newspaper vendors at the corner. Many of them have known me since I first moved to Abuja and it was a friendly exchange,” he said.

Exposé: How Sen. Akpabio Allegedly Milks The NDDC Through His Cousin, Emmanuel Inyangetor

While the country was shocked with the scandal that came out many months ago about the activities and financial recklessness going on in the Niger Delta Development Commission under Senator Godswill Akpabio watch, investigations revealed that the Minister of the Niger Delta is still having a field day as he runs the commission through his cronies.

Akpabio not long after he was sworn as the Minister of the ministry made his cousin, Emmanuel Inyangetor a Special Adviser to the NDDC’s Executive Director of Finance and Administration, Chief Ibanga Etang. His mission there was to represent his cousin’s interest and monitor the financial activities of the commission.

An insider hinted that Inyangetor was so powerful in NDDC that he is the one that signs the papers from the EDFA before it gets to the Managing Director.

It is a usual practise that Akpabio through Inyangetor takes 35 per cent off all contracts before contractors were paid.

The Managing Director once attempted to cut down Inyangetor’s recklessness but he was threatened with a sack.

Behind the facade of the pristine and plush Victoria Island, Lagos, the office of Eroton Exploration and Production, an independent oil and gas producing company, is a cesspool of discontent, debts, and dire straits.

The company is barely surviving since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Eroton has been stewing in embarrassing debts and failure to meet its obligations to many of its suppliers and staff.

Worse is that the company, according to inside sources, has had to lay off some of its workers because it could no longer meet up with its monthly wage bill.

Like every other company across the world, Eroton, in conforming with the new world order of social distancing necessitated by COVID-19, asked some of its staff to start working from home.

When things normalized a bit, some of the staff were asked to return to the office while others were sacked outright. The entitlements of those laid off have reportedly not been sorted.

Amongst top management staff, it is believed that beyond the impact of the coronavirus on the global economy, the lavish lifestyle of their chairman, Jite Okoloko, has also affected the fortunes of the company. Dandy Okoloko loves the good life. And he spares no expense to lap up every imaginable luxury from one end of the world to the other.

America Decides: Why Joe Biden Will Win US Election By Jumu’ah Abiodun

As the whole world is looking forward to the much-awaited United States election slated for Tuesday, November 3, 2020, there are lots of political intrigues to the poll. This is the 59th quadrennial presidential election of the country.

Major issues that shape the election include Climate Change, COVID-19 pandemic, the death of George Floyd which gave birth to the Black Lives Matter protests across the world and the death of other African-Americans, pushing for the repeal of Obama Care, Economy, Faceoff with China among other issues.

COVID-19:
Presently in the United States, over 9 million cases were confirmed and 231, 000 deaths recorded. It was reported that President Trump ignored experts advice and undermined the pandemic.

George Floyd’s Death:
The Majority of Americans ranging from whites and black believe the President didn’t handle the killings of Black Americans with care.

Obama Care:
President Trump got it wrong when he started pushing for the repeal of Obama Care which millions of Americans are benefiting from.

Climate Change:
President Trump doesn’t seem to show enough concern about Climate Change.

It’s worth noting that the US election is not about the total number of votes cast or states won but satisfying the 270 or above Electoral College votes needed to win the White House.

If no candidate receives the minimum 270 electoral votes needed to win the election, the United States House of Representatives will select the president from the three candidates who received the most electoral votes, and the United States Senate will select the vice president from the candidates who received the two highest totals. The election will occur simultaneously alongside elections for the House of Representatives, Senate, and various state and local-level elections.
