A total of 4,050 persons participated in a peace walk in twelve communities in six local government councils of Kogi state as part of this year International Day of Peace.

The Kogi state Executive Director Participation Initiative for Behavioural Change in Development (PIBCID), Halima Oiza Sadiq, while speaking with newsmen on Monday said the programme was in commemoration of the 2020 International Day of Peace, a peace walk held in 12 SARVE II Project communities in Kogi in line with the global theme ‘Shaping Peace Together.

She noted that the peace walk is organised by ActionAid Nigeria in partnership with Participation Initiative for Behavioural Change in Development (PIBCID) with funding from the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund, (GCERF).
According to her, the Global Peace Day is marked to emphasize the need for people to be devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace and to emphasis peaceful coexistence by spreading messages of unity, hope and empathy.

“The one-day annual peace walk is part of the implementation of the System and Structure Strengthening Approach Against Radicalization to Violent Extremism Project (SARVE II).
“The project which aims to reduce the vulnerability of at-risk young men and women to conflict and radicalization is being implemented in 24 communities of 12 local government councils in Kogi and Nasarawa states respectively.

“One of the most vulnerable groups of violent extremism are young persons. As a way of shaping peace together in Kogi state, we are using this opportunity to call for the implementations of the Kogi Youth Development Commission Law which will go a long way in reducing this the vulnerability of youths to social vices and enhancing the development

“The provisions of the law upholds entrepreneurship opportunities as a strategy for keeping young men and women in Kogi State engaged and away from the influence of extremist groups

“We called on the Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello for the speedy implementation of the Law, which was signed since April 2019.

“Through this peace walk offers an opportunity for indigenes of Kogi to be reminded of their roles in peacebuilding while also promoting social cohesion through engagement and sharing of messages of peace,” she stated

The Peace Walk was held at Lokoja, Kogi-koto, Ette-Akpasu, Tajimi, Agbaja, Inata, Emekutu, Abache, Ukowa, Aku/Osaragada, Osisi, Ugbedomagwu and Ujagba in Kogi State.

As both the ruling All Progressives Congress,(APC), and the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), continue to take stock of the just concluded governorship election in Edo State, Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday declared the earlier opinion polls conducted ahead favoured the APC to win the election convincingly.

The Kaduna State governor, who spoke on Monday morning while featuring on Channels Television, stated that the Saturday’s election was reasonably decent but could not explain what actually happened in the past three weeks for the APC candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-iyamu to have lost the poll to the incumbent, Governor Godwin Obaseki.
He stated that based on the outcome of the opinion polls, he was optimistic till up to three weeks ago that his party, the All Progressives Congress, (APC) would win the governorship election.
According to him, “We (APC) would have loved to win and quite frankly, I was optimistic up to three weeks ago; the polls indicated that we were going to win. I don’t know what happened in the last three weeks of the campaign.

“As you know, a large number of voters make up their minds in the last two weeks of the election. Many voters decide that no matter what happens, this is how I am voting but most people want to wait and make up their minds in the last two weeks.
“Three weeks ago, the polls clearly showed that APC was going to win but the result came out differently from what we expected.
“Obaseki has won the Edo election, that’s it. You can’t go into an election without the possibility of losing.
“The election was reasonably decent. We were all worried about violence but there was very little violence or none at all.”
The governor also stressed that the regime of President Muhammadu Buhari was committed to free and fair elections which clearly played on Saturday. He said that the President followed it up by congratulating the winner of the poll, Governor Obaseki on his re-election shortly after INEC declared him as the winner.

Some private schools in Lagos State recorded a large turnout of students following the Lagos State Government’s directive on resumption on Monday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on Aug. 29, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed primary and secondary schools to reopen.
Sanwo-Olu gave the direction during the 17th Update on the management of the coronavirus pandemic in Lagos.

NAN, who visited some schools in the state, reports that water, soaps, hand-sanitisers and infrared thermometer were provided by the schools’ management. At Honeyland Schools, Ipaja, parents were seen trooping in to drop their children while observing social distancing in registering them.
Also, compulsory wearing of nose masks and social distancing in classrooms were observed by students and teachers. A big banner displaying the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines was seen at the entrance of the school.

“In all classrooms, we are maintaining social distance by displaying a sticker of “Do Not Sit Here”.
“Teaching starts from 8.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. and virtual learning is still available for students who do not want to resume yet,’’ he said.
NAN, however, observed that some schools at Iyana-Ipaja and Egbeda areas were still locked and there was no sign of resumption.
At Victoria Island and Lekki, some private schools continued to teach their students through virtual learning.
At the Senior High School, Alimosho, only Junior Secondary Three (JS 3) and Senior Secondary Two (SS 2) students were allowed to enter the school premise with face masks or shields.

Security officials at the Faith Academy, Gowon Estate, Ipaja said that only SS three students have resumed while others will be resuming on Thursday.

Mr Abdul Ademola, Principal, Homat Group of Schools, Odogunyan, Ikorodu said that the school would keep guiding the students on COVID-19 protocols.

Ademola said that management had reduced number of students in a class from 20 students before the lockdown to 12 students as part of the effort to prevent infection.

“We are all happy to resume back to school after staying home for too long.

“There is no automatic promotion in our school, we are going to engage all classes with lectures, continuous assessment and examination,’’ he said.

Mrs Olanike Ayoola, a parent at Honeyland schools expressed confidence that her children were safe with the school because of the guidelines been maintained.

“I am so confident in my children’s school; they are ready for the students’ resumption.

“During the lockdown, they educated us on the safety protocols against COVID-19,’’ Ayoola said.

Another parent, Mrs Kehinde Ojewoye, corroborated Ayoola’s confidence, saying that she was not scared of COVID-19.

According to Ojewoye, the school is fully prepared for the students’ resumption.

She said that teachers should just maintain social distancing with their students to avoid any issue.

The Senate Minority Caucus has congratulated incumbent Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki over his fresh mandate, consequent on his victory in the weekend governorship election

Senator representing Abia South and Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, in a statement, said Obaseki’s victory “signals a new dawn and the ultimate end of godfatherism in Nigeria politics.”

Senator Abaribe who also applauded the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Prince Uche Secondus for what he called its tenacity and resilience in the face of manifest intimidations, said “the victory further confirmed that power ultimately belongs to the people and not to some fathom individuals who think they can play God and toy with the will and wishes of the people.

Going forward, I believe that the Edo people through their overwhelming endorsement of Governor Obaseki and PDP sent the right signal across, affirming that never again should any political party succumb to the undemocratic machination of some few, who like to play tin-god because of their supposedly rich pocket.

“This victory is a soothing balm not only for Edo people but also for the entire country especially against the backdrop of the excruciating sufferings and hardship foisted on the people by the All Progressive Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.”

The Minority Caucus urged the people of Ondo State to be ready to replicate what has happened in Edo State “so that Nigeria will be returned to genuine and people-oriented democracy.”
