It was not that she had totally abandoned the dream of working for the television, but as it was, she enjoyed what she was doing, though the money was not fantastic.

She thanked God for the pecks she was making, nonetheless. Besides, Captain Henry Damanchi, her lover and fiancée, had been proving to be a very worthy source of indulgences. He had always showered her with gifts especially after his return flights from overseas.

Henry was very generous so to speak. Nike had been living with him in his Ikoyi flat for the last one year. She wore a ring on her third finger to indicate that she was already engaged to him.

Left to her, she would have become his missus long time ago. All her friends and mates had married; she had told him.

Henry would laugh over that. It was a matter of time, he would tell her with a reassuring smile and a pat. Things had not been exactly easy. Her Client Services Manager was recently becoming a thorn in the flesh.

He had been making advances towards her and she had rebuffed him. He had remained undaunted and that had worsened the matters.

He claimed he saw her in his dream as his wife.
Nike wasn’t impressed. She had told him he must be hallucinating. The manager laughed off her rebuff and promised to persevere.

Next weekend would be her thirtieth birthday. God, she wasn’t getting any younger. Henry had promised that it would be a swell party.

Presently, he was out of the country but had promised that he would be back by Wednesday evening. That was tomorrow. Unconsciously, Nike checked her watch for the time as if that would guarantee that all was well.

She dropped the artworks she was looking at. Time was a few minutes after 1.00 p.m., and it was time she took a break. She left her office and went to the staff canteen. As she ate her lunch in the highly subsidized canteen, she thought of her present and her future.

The prospects were bright, she decided. She had every cause to glorify God that she was hale and hearty.

She remembered her room-mate in her final year on the campus. Mary had been quite close to her and they had developed a kind of sibling relationship. Then, suddenly, Mary had fallen sick. Typhoid fever, they called it. She was admitted into the university teaching hospital. Nike had thought it was a minor ailment which Mary would soon get over.

Then, Nike was shocked when she heard that Mary had died. Could typhoid kill? Nike asked stupidly. She had been bereaved for quite some time. How could such a terrible fate befall an innocent and sweet one like Mary? Mary was just twenty. Was that what life was about – being cut off so young and so suddenly?

That was ten years ago. Nike had lived ten years after her dear Mary. She thanked God for her life.
Ajayi, an office assistant in her department, popped inside the canteen and, on sighting her, walked straight towards her. He was holding her phone. Gosh, she had left it on her table.

‘The phone keeps ringing on and on,’ Ajayi said, stretching out his right hand.

Nike grinned. ‘Oh, thanks.’ She got the phone from him. It had stopped ringing. She checked who had been calling and realized it was from a foreign number. She had no doubt that it must be Henry.

The phone started to ring again.

‘Hello, Henry.’

‘Hi. I’ve been calling you for some time, now.’
‘Sorry, I went to the canteen to take my lunch and I didn’t bring my phone along. Silly me.’

He laughed shortly across the line. ‘It’s okay. I hope I’m not disturbing your lunch?’

‘Oh, no. it’s always good to hear your voice. How’s life over there? Where’re you now?’

‘In London, of course.’ He said it as if he had lived in London all his life. Henry was always that assertive.

‘How’re you doing? How’s the queen city?’

‘Fine, fine. Everything is swell. How’re you there?’

‘I miss you.’ She had said that in countless number of times. What else would you tell a lover that left you all alone while he shuffled across the globe in the cockpit? To her, that expression would never become a cliché.

‘I miss you, too,’ he replied. Each of them usually expressed the other person’s absence this way.

‘I’ll soon be back home. Tomorrow evening, I should be back, just like I said.’

‘Yes, and I’ll be right there, waiting for you.’

‘Any problem?’

‘None other than missing you.’

The door of her office opened as Becky, one of her colleagues, came inside.

He laughed over the line. His laugh was pleasant. She loved to see or hear him laugh. It always sounded pleasantly melodious.

‘Don’t worry,’ he reassured, ‘I’ll soon be with you, my dear.’

‘And I’ll surely long to be with you, Henry.’

He talked briefly more about missing her, promised her a swell time together when he returned and bade her bye.

‘Your heartthrob?’ Becky asked.

Becky was nice but was given to too much of gossiping. It was quite good that Nike was in a mood for chit-chat this afternoon. Nike liked her but was often pissed off by Becky’s talkativeness. All the same, they managed to get along well.

I was all curious. ‘What mistake was that, ma?’

‘I shouldn’t have said I would observe you for some time before you were confirmed as the substantive Manager. Now, I know that you really merit to manage this place. That means from the end of the next month, you’ll be earning what she was earning.’

‘Ah, thank you, ma,’ I said. ‘Thank you for the confidence you have in me.’

‘Keep up the good work, Simi. You’re true daughter of Bimbola. She always does things with dedication. She told me your father was like that.’

I smiled wanly. ‘Thank you, ma. I was actually coming to see you for something.’

‘What’s that?’

‘There’s a Toyota Corolla in the car park. It’s a gift from a friend to me.’

‘Really?’ Her surprise was total. ‘You mean you already have a friend in this Lagos that could be so generous?’

I smiled and nodded. ‘Well, I must say that I too was surprised he was that very generous.’

She suddenly smiled warmly. ‘Well, I told you, didn’t I? I told you that the guys in Lagos are much smarter. So, what are the two of you waiting for? When are you doing the wedding?’

I nearly burst out in laughter. Wedding?

‘Er, well, we’re still watching to see how things work out,’ I said.

‘Nothing to watch again,’ she said sharply. ‘That’s your man, Simi. That’s your husband.’

Again, I felt like laughing. If only Mrs. Shitta would understand.

‘Well, thank you, ma,’ I said and stood up. ‘Thank you very much.’

Towards evening, I decided to call Tina and let her know about Mola’s gift. After all, she was the one that first connected me to him.

‘Mola bought me a Toyota Corolla,’ I informed.

‘Wow! You don’t mean it!’

‘I mean it,’ I said. ‘Right now, the car is at the parking space of Comely Hotel.’

‘Wonderful. Simi, baby, you are the one!’

I giggled. ‘The car is for us, Tina.’

‘Oh, baby. You’re so good. I wish we live in the U.S.A. I will marry you. Honestly, I need somebody with a golden heart like you.’

‘Well, sorry, Tina, we don’t live in America.’

‘Ah, yes. Quite unfortunate. Anyway, I’ll be coming over tonight, dear. Then, we’ll ‘wash’ your new car.’

‘Okay. You will highly be welcomed.’

She came in about eight p.m., and we left for me place together. I already had a bottle of champagne and some laps of fried chicken in my bag.
We popped the champagne and took the chicken. It was one great moment of friendship and companionship. Tina slept overnight but had to
wake up by five to prepare for work.

‘One of the disadvantages of this new job,’ Tina said, ‘is that I have to wake up early and prepare for work. I have to do that if I must get to the
Ikoyi office on time.’

I nodded. ‘But, then, you’re compensated for it.’

She nodded. ‘Yeah. I guess I should stop complaining.’

She soon left for her place of work. I remained in bed till six-thirty before I got up to brush my teeth and take my bath. Later that morning, a firm
that booked our conference center for a seminar started a three-day seminar in the hotel. During their lunch break, the head of the consortium
came to my office. He was the one that had come to make the booking of the venue.

Unlike me, he had no fixed time to go or get to work.

‘I’ll not be paying you anytime we meet like this again,’ he said.

I was surprised. Did that mean I had offered free service?

‘What do you mean?’ I asked.

‘What I mean is I don’t like the pattern. It means I’m paying for sex.’

I kept quiet, wondering what exactly he had in mind.

‘For, example, I’m not going to pay you anything this morning.’

I raised an eyebrow. ‘Really?’

‘Yes.’ He suddenly smiled. ‘But from time to time, even if you don’t expect it, you’ll be compensated and taken care of.’

I still kept quiet. He smiled. He stood up from the bed and opened his business case by the bed-side. From there, he brought a car key out.

‘There’s a car at the parking space downstairs. It’s a metallic Toyota Corolla. It’s yours.’

‘What!’ I was too surprised to say more.

He brought a big, brown envelope. ‘Here, all the car documents are here. By the way, can you drive?’

Yes, I could drive, but only a bit. Besides, driving in Ibadan was very different from driving in Lagos. ‘Only a bit,’ I answered.

He nodded. ‘I’ll give you money for cab when you’re leaving, but Manu will bring the car to you. He’ll do that this morning.’

I was joyous. I didn’t know when I threw my hands round his neck and kissed him.

‘Oh, thank you so much,’ I gushed. ‘Thank you for your generosity.’

That was the payment I got that morning. It was a payment that probably covered many days of ‘service’, but then, I knew he was not exactly
paying for any service. He was just trying to be good. He brought out a wad of money and counted out twenty thousand naira.

‘Take,’ he said.

I expressed surprise as I took the money. ‘All this to pay for a cab?’

He smiled easily. ‘No. Use the rest to fuel the car.’

That was another wonderful thing from him. I gave him another hug.

I was happy when I returned to Berger. Mola was indeed making me to be a ‘big babe.’ Then, something struck my mind. How would I explain the
car to Mrs. Shitta? I shrugged. I would tell her it was a gift from … A gift from whom? My man friend? My boy friend?

Again I shrugged. I was not a kid, for God’s sake!

I got to the hotel and resumed duty without delay. By mid-day, Manu brought the car and came to hand over the envelope containing the
particulars and other documents.

But there was another little surprise.

‘Inside the boot of the car is a twenty-five liter keg containing petrol,’ Manu said.

Now, that was very generous of Mola, having given me the money for fuel already. I followed Manu to the car park to inspect the car. It was
brand new. Mola had done very well.

I gave Manu two thousand naira notes.

‘Use this to transport yourself back,’ I said.

He too was surprised. Well, I guessed it was a day of many surprises. Indeed, it was. After Manu had gone, I went to see Mrs. Shitta in her
office. I certainly had some things to let her know.

‘Good afternoon, ma,’ I greeted.

‘Ah, good afternoon, Simi. I was about to send for you. Sit down.’

I took a seat. ‘Thank you, ma.’

‘I’ve been observing you since morning,’ she said. ‘I realized that I made a mistake.’

I was all curious. ‘What mistake was that, ma?’

‘I shouldn’t have said I would observe you for some time before you were confirmed as the substantive Manager. Now, I know that you really

Jide did not offer his hand for a handshake this time around as he done when the man first came in. He only nodded and watched him go out, his expensive crocodile skin briefcase an obvious tell-tale of ill-gotten display of affluence.

Jide even thought of calling in the security guy to interrogate and hand over the man to the police, but he decided not to do so. Leave the little devil alone, he decided.

The next visitor was an official from Obat Oil company. Everything discussed was strictly business and official. After that came in Alhaji Dan Bature who also worked in the legal department of an oil company. Dan was a young ebullient man who diffused pure aura of wealth, arrogance and authority.

He was a man born of the silver spoon, but it would be right to say that his family background had more of the silver lining. Dan and Jide had met about two years ago. The occasion could be described as ‘oily’ affair and the two had remained friends ever since then.

They were almost the same age, but Dan Bature already had two wives and five children.

‘Alhaji Alhaji,’ Jide hailed him as soon as he stepped inside his office. The latter was all smiles. He was dressed – not surprisingly – in babanriga of white guinea brocade. The satellite phone he always went around with was in his left hand, as usual. It had become part of his dressing accessories.

‘Jide, the law,’ Dan replied. The two always exchanged greetings like this. Jide rose to his feet to give a warm handshake.

‘How are the worigidas?’

‘Oh, they’re fine. They’re doing very well.’

His visit was private, so they chatted briefly on private matters.

‘What can I offer you, Alhaji?’ Jide asked.

The latter shook his head. “Thanks. I’m okay as I am.’

After about seven minutes, Dan stood up to go.

‘Are you coming to the polo club this Saturday?’ Dan asked. ‘We’ve not seen you at that place for some time, now.’

‘Ah, I will try to make it.’

He accompanied Dan to the elevator, waved good bye to him before he returned to his office. His work resumed in earnest.

Nike was in her office, going through some artwork that would be used for advertisement. She worked as the Assistant Client Service Manager at MedNet Advertising Company. As an undergraduate, she had thought she would end of as a newscaster or a broadcast person, but here she was, working for and advertising company.

She had studied Mass Communication in the university out of the love she had for the media world. At that time, she had figured herself becoming a prominent newscaster or a presenter in the glamorous and famous world of the tube.

As far as she was concerned, in this modern global village, telecommunication industry remained one of the most viable. Then, she would watch CNN and MTV for hours, marveling on the power of intercontinental communication.

At the end of her degree and the national youth service, she found herself in the advertising sub sector of the industry, after some job search. She had tried as much as she could to be employed by one of the private television stations, but it appeared she had to wait for a while in this regard. She had taken her present as a tentative measure, but had come to like it.

It was not that she had totally abandoned the dream of working for the television, but as it was, she enjoyed what she was doing, though the money was not fantastic. She thanked God for the pecks she was making, nonetheless.

On Monday morning, the reality hit me that Tina would not be coming to work for Comely Hotel again. She had gone to resume as P.A to Damola Koku, the CEO of Coccus Oil and Gas. I wished her the best. I had no qualms that I declined taking up the appointment. My earnings in Comely were not bad and if I planned well with my income, I would continue to live comfortably.

She called me about mid-day. ‘Hello, baby girl.’

‘Hello, Tina. How’re you?’

‘Cool. I’ve started the work as P.A to Mola.’

‘Yeah. How’s the work?’

‘Cool. I’m sure I’m going to enjoy it.’

She sounded excited and, again, I wished her the best.

That evening, Mola called me. ‘Let’s meet in that hotel suite,’ he said.

‘Okay,’ I answered. ‘But I may come a bit late. Now that Tina has left, I have more work to do.’

He was silent for some seconds. ‘Like what time will you be leaving the place?’ he asked.

‘Maybe by nine in the evening,’ I replied.

Again he was silent briefly. ‘I’ll send a driver to come and pick you,’ he said. ‘His name is Manu. That will save you the stress of coming here late
in the night.’

‘Oh, you’re such a darling,’ I said.

Few minutes to nine, the reception lady called to inform me that a man by the name Manu was waiting to see me.

‘Let him wait,’ I said. I tidied up some things and got ready. The ride to Ikoyi was smooth. I sat at the rear right seat of the Prado jeep. I must
say I was impressed by the presidential treatment Mola was giving me. I honestly wished more of such would come.

It was few minutes past ten when I stepped inside Mola’s suite. From the way he smiled expansively, he was glad to see me.

‘What will you like to eat, dear?’ he asked.

I had eaten about seven p.m., so I wasn’t hungry.

‘I’m okay. I ate just some hours ago.’

‘What about chicken? Will you like to take just fried chicken?’

Gosh, this man was trying to be nice. I smiled. I didn’t really want anything, but maybe taking some chicken was not a bad idea.

‘Okay,’ I said, the smile still on my face.

She placed me on his laps.

‘How’s my friend doing at work?’ I asked.

‘Not bad, so far. But I wish you were my P.A.’

Wonderful, I thought. I must have got a wonderful aura.

‘Tina is good,’ I pointed out. ‘She’s hard-working and dedicated.’

He grunted. I wondered why he was particular about me being his P.A. There was a soft rapping on the door. I went to open it. The room service
had come with his order. The food was brought in a large tray. Mola asked that the tray be put on he center, glass table and tipped the guy.

‘Thank you, sir,’ the beneficiary said and left.

We ate in silence. I had to force myself to have the appetite and to munch the chicken.

After the meal, he allowed some minutes of rest before the passionate action began. In what was becoming a normal trend, he did it only once
and collapsed on the bed.

The following morning, I woke up at five to start preparing for work. I was dressing up when he opened his eyes.

‘Hello, love,’ he greeted.

‘Good morning, darling’, I answered.

Unlike me, he had no fixed time to go or get to work.

‘I’ll not be paying you anytime we meet like this again,’ he said.

I was surprised. Did that mean I had offered free service?

He looked so candid whenever he spoke that way. Yeni was always taken in by that mien. Amanda was no exception. This time around, she mellowed down.

‘It’s just that I missed you so much,’ she said softly.

‘I missed you, and I’m sorry.’

He patted her shoulder. She wished she could really make him understand her feelings better. You’re just being sentimental, she told herself almost in a reproach.

Lover boy was already married, couldn’t you understand that? Why did you start this emotional adventure with him in the first place? Sentiments. Raw sentiments. She wished she could brush aside emotions.

The traffic was light so it didn’t take them long to get to her place at Maryland. Now, she wasn’t so much looking displeased with him anymore.

‘I want to cook for you,’ she offered. ‘What will you like?’

He smiled at her. ‘That’s good of you.’

‘Be my guest.’ She went to the kitchen to prepare the meal. She was going to satisfy him tonight and have the best of him, she thought delightedly.

* * *

On Tuesday, Amanda breezed into the office looking very dazzling. For some yet inexplicable reasons, she was in a very good mood today. Her mood was certainly reflected in her behavior. She was dressed in a skirt suit that looked so cool and cute on her.

The black dress was made by Donna Karan and she had chosen it in a way of dressing to kill. The skirt was barely knee-length. It was ‘hot.’ That was very good, she felt, for it complimented her attractive legs.

When Jide got to the office, he was quick to notice her splendid aura. ‘You look so nice today.

That’s a cute dress you are putting on.’

She was delighted at his compliments. ‘Thanks, dear boss.’

‘And you look so happy. What’s the secret?’

‘I don’t know. I guess the mood just comes.’

‘Ah, good for you. Yesterday, the mood was so different. You look much better today.’

He realized that she even looked prettier than he thought. Her mood certainly added to her looks. Things went on smoothly that day in the office.

There was a total lull from Biyi as neither Jide nor Yeni had heard anything from him since the last time that he sent a courier-delivered message to him. Indeed, Jide had started forgetting about him. He had other things to contend with, and the bitter ex-lover wasn’t one of them.

At ten o’clock, he started attending to some visitors who had come to see him for various reasons. One of them was a gorgeously dressed man who introduced himself as Akin Matthew.

He was a debonair man with an air of affluence and authority about him.

After the introduction, Akin Matthew said he represented an oil prospecting company in Dallas, Texas, and had come to Nigeria to do business in oil distribution and marketing. His company, he claimed had gone into partnership business with some oil companies in Qatar, United Arab Emirate, Angola and Gabon.

He had come to see Jide because he felt the two of them could do some discreet business together and make cool money. Jide listened attentively. Events in recent times in Nigeria had shown that fraudsters usually operated in this suave way.

Many people had fallen victims of these fraudsters. They were so smooth and they looked so convincing that one would have thought they were indeed out to do genuine business. Jide had heard and learnt more than enough about them.

They were the same kind of people that would send bogus e-mails, operate spurious websites, and make illicit claims to having business of repute. The greedy and unwary ones, Jide believed, were the ones that fell for such fraudulent baits and scams. No, not him. He wouldn’t fall for it.

‘Why must the business become personal?’ he asked the man. ‘Why can’t it be done at the very official level between the company you work for and mine?’

Mr. Matthew was a little bit thrown off by that question. With the background information he had, he had thought this young and ambitious looking legal adviser and secretary would fall for his bait. Jide had not even waited to hear the explicit details of the very business he was proposing to him.

Neither had he waited to be told the aspect of expenses and the projected profits to be made and the sharing formula.

‘I was thinking that as an upward-moving guy, you would take the advantage,’ Matthew said.

‘If the business is viable, one doesn’t have to be young to accept it. Why not meet with my M.D?’

The man knew that was the end of the road. He stood up. ‘Thank you so much, Mr. Jide Akindele. We’ll see again.’

Jide did not offer his hand for a handshake this time around as he done when the man first came in. He only nodded and watched him go out, his expensive crocodile skin briefcase an obvious tell-tale of ill-gotten display of affluence.

Tina called him and he asked her to come for the test and interview the following day by ten in the morning.

‘I’ll go there straight from my house,’ Tina told me. ‘You will have to cover up for me. Tell madam I went to the bank.’

‘No problem.’

She did as she said. It was almost 1.30 p.m., when she came to work. Thankfully, since I was up and doing, madam did not notice her long
absence.

‘How did it go?’ I asked.

She nodded. ‘All went well. I did the written and verbal tests and came out in flying colors. He says he will get back to me within twenty hours.’

I looked surprised. ‘Get back to? Why can’t he employ you immediately?’

Tina smiled wryly. ‘I wonder o.’

The following morning, Tina got a call from Mola and gave her the message she had been yearning to hear.

‘He has said I can come around to pick my letter of employment. I’m to start the work next Monday.’

‘Ah, congratulations.’ I hugged her.

Then, it suddenly dawned on me that she would be leaving me at Comely Hotel. ‘Wait a minute, Tina. Are you really going to leave me alone,
here?’

She hugged me again. ‘Don’t you worry, baby. We’ll arrange for how we’ll be meeting. Tina will never abandon you, Simi darling.’

I was very much comforted by those words.

About four p.m., Mrs. Shitta called me to her office.

‘Tina said she has got another job, and she would be leaving by Sunday,’ she said.

I nodded. ‘She told me so.’

She sighed. ‘She has been doing well since we started this business,’ she continued. ‘There’s no doubt she’s an asset to us and we’re going to
miss her. Well, such is life. There’s no way I could stop a young woman from progressing in life.’

I nodded but wondered if she would say the same thing if I were to be the one that had given my notice of resigning.

‘You’re going to be the acting Business Manager. If you handle the position well, I will only employ someone to assist you. Otherwise, I will get
another Manager. But, I trust you. I trust that you will do well.’

I beamed in smile. ‘Thank you, ma.’

Later that evening, late in the night, Tina and I were in my room. As soon as we entered the place, she was all over me, kissing and caressing.
Several minutes later, we snuggled to each other in bed, gladdened that we had satisfied our desire.

‘I can’t leave you,’ she said. ‘The fact that I’m changing job does not mean end to our relationship. We’ve got to be seeing, and you have to be the one to be coming to my house.’

Her house was not far away. With a bike, I could get there within five minutes.

‘That will be no problem,’ I answered.

‘And of course, I’ll be coming here too - once in a while.’

Today, they worked for about two hours on the book. Since morning, they had rarely spoken to each other. He had bought her a surprise package, a Nokia phone, to make up as he had promised. He then wondered why she was still acting as she was.

Actually, she was feeling the heat of her taciturnity. There was no way she would put up with such controlled conversations the next day. She decided to call it a day.

‘Thanks for all the help you’ve been rendering,’ he told her, smiling in a boyish way.

‘It’s a pleasure. Are you going now?’

‘Yes.’

‘I’m not quite ready.’

‘Well, in that case, I’ll find an alternative means of transport.’

He shook his head. ‘There’ll be no need for that.’ He shut his laptop down and stood up to close for the day too. They rode the elevator down.

‘I’ll be going home straight,’ he announced.

She stared briefly at him. ‘In that case, there’s no need I go with you.’

He looked puzzled. ‘Why that? I don’t understand you.’

‘If you’ll be going home straight, then there’s no need we go together.’

‘Why?’

‘Because there’s no need.’

‘What d’you mean, there’s no need? Have we not been going together before?’

They were at the car park. She dropped his briefcase in the backseat. He studied her for a couple of seconds, then decided how to play along with her.

‘Alright, alright. Get inside the car and let’s go.’

She remained adamant. ‘Well?’

He sighed. ‘Of course, we’ll go to your place first. I won’t be going to my home first, after all. Get inside the car and let’s go.’

It was then that she was mollified. They sat at the back seats while the driver backed the car out of the parking lot and joined the main road.

Something told him he must tread softly in his relationship with Amanda, else he would soon find himself enmeshed in a tangle that would choke him up. She was getting too emotional and that certainly portended danger.

Ladies were always accusing him of not paying attention to them; of being so unfeeling. Jide had been having a running battle with one lover or the other at different times.

He remembered his first love in his school days. Dupe had a lithe and enticing figure he found himself enamored to. One day, she had come to rave about his infidelity – as if they were already married! Jide could not understand what the fuss was all about. Dupe, heartbroken, had called it quit and no amount of entreaty would make her change her mind. Gosh!

‘I thought you care for me,’ Amanda was saying. Biyi’s mind was already far off and he had to jerk himself back to the reality.

‘Huh?’

Amanda reiterated what she had said.

He blinked rapidly. ‘Of course, I care,’ he replied shortly. ‘What makes you think otherwise?’

They always wanted to be assured and reassured, he thought gloomily. Can’t they just take and accept things as they are?

‘If you care, how come you always forget about me the moment I’m out of your sight it’s like my case is out of sight, out of mind.’

‘That’s not true,’ he corrected. ‘I’ve already told you the reason why I couldn’t make it to your place over the weekend.’

She shook her head but didn’t say anything. Whatever that meant. Jide held her hand, trying to look as serious as he could.

‘Amanda, you shouldn’t let a small matter like this make you become so uptight. Try to be understanding. I thought I’ve even made up for the inadequacy.’

I nearly said I would, but when I imagined what the countenance of Bimbola Akorede would be, and how disappointed Maria Shitta would look, I withheld my assent.

‘Give me a little bit of more time,’ I said, wishing I could take it up. The money was tempting, but sometimes, other exigent matters override pecuniary gains.

‘The job will wait for you,’ he said. ‘I know you’ll still take it up.’

Later, I told Tina about the man’s persistence.

‘You’re very lucky, aren’t you? Many ladies will be praying to be in your shoes.’

I nodded. ‘Yes, but the fact remains that I can’t take it. I think I’m the one wasting time over this matter. All I have to do is tell him straight forward that while I appreciate his kind gesture, I can’t take it.’

‘Wait a minute,’ Tina said. ‘What if I tell him that I’m willing to take it up?’

I stared at her in surprise. ‘Are you sure about what you’re saying?’

‘Of course.’ She smiled. ‘Since the offer is better than what I have now, I don’t mind. What do you say to that?’

I thought briefly. ‘But you’re just about four months on this job. You mean you’ll just leave it like that?’

‘Why not? Mola owns an oil marketing firm. He is swimming in money. Why should one not be willing to be part of that affluence? Tell him, that
you cannot take up his offer, but that I, Tina, am ready.’

I suddenly shrugged. ‘Okay. I’ll tell him.’

Later in my office, I put a call to Damola Koku.

‘Good afternoon, Mola. I hope all is going very well.’

‘All is well. There’s no problem, my dear.’

‘I called you in respect of that P.A offer.’

‘Good. When’re you starting?’

‘No, I’m not the one taking it. It’s my good friend, Tina that is humbly willing to accept the offer.’

There was a long pause and I wondered if the line had disconnected.

‘Hello? Are you still there?’ I asked.

‘Yes, I’m here. How could you tell that Tina will be a good P.A?’

‘I think she will. First, she’s my boss here, and she’s doing very well. Two, she’s good in coordinating and organizing things. In simple expressions,
she combines beauty with brain.’

There was another long pause. ‘Are you sure you don’t want to take the job? If you want me to increase the pay, I will do so, right now.
Besides, remember there are many other perks that you will enjoy. I will ensure you get the best that is obtainable in the industry.’

‘See, sir, (yes, I used ‘sir’ that very moment) the main obstacle is the fact that my present employer is a good friend of my mother and is like a
mother to me. She was the one that brought me to Lagos, from my Ibadan base. I can’t just leave her and the job within few months of working
for her.’

There was a short silence. ‘Alright. I understand, now. It’s okay. But for Tina, I will have to give her written and verbal test before I can be
convinced that she’ll be suitable for the job.’

I smiled. ‘Okay, oga Mola, I’ll tell her.’

‘When are we seeing again?’

‘Tell me when you want to see me.’

There was a brief silence. ‘I’ll call you tomorrow to let you know.’

‘Okay, love.’

I told Tina about what he said.

‘If he wants me to write a test, no problem. I will call him to know when I can go to his office.’

Tina called him and he asked her to come for the test and interview the following day by ten in the morning.

‘I’ll go there straight from my house,’ Tina told me. ‘You will have to cover up for me. Tell madam I went to the bank.’

‘No problem.’

She clouded her face. ‘Sick?’

‘Yes, kind of. I went to my uncle’s place, and there I developed a serious running stomach. It must have been something I ate. I even had to sleep over there that night.’

The lies came so glibly, now. Biyi was a master in the art of falsehood and deceit, no doubt.

Rose decided to believe him. ‘I’m sorry for that. When I waited for some minutes and I didn’t see you, I left. I tried your number but could not get through. I couldn’t help wondering why you couldn’t keep your appointment.’

He smiled apologetically again. ‘Oh, it’s that damned stomach upset. Sorry, I couldn’t make it.’

They were still standing on the terrace. She curiously looked at the main building.

‘And, I’m sorry for another thing: today, I won’t be able to attend to you well. My uncle and a cousin are around and we’re having a kind of family meeting. I’ll have to see you another time.’

This time, there was the look of unbelief and incredulity about her. Not to talk of the disappointment.

‘Let me get your address. Tell me when and where I can see you, and I’ll surely make it a thing to remember. I’ll pay you a surprise visit.’

Her countenance softened, but not completely.

‘Come on. This time around, I’ll surely keep the date.’ He grinned.

She dipped her hand inside her bag and brought out a small card. ‘I perform at this club every Friday night from 9.00 p.m. if you can make it to the club, you will surely see me.’

He stared at the card. ‘What kind of performance?’

‘Singing.’

He whistled softly. ‘Alright. That’s good.’ He brought out five hundred naira notes and peeled out some. ‘Use this to transport yourself back.’

‘Thanks.’ She tucked the money inside the side wallet of her bag. ‘I’ll be expecting you.’

‘Okay. See you.’

He waved at her and locked the gate back. She walked jauntily to the bus stop not far away. Not a bad day, she decided as she walked up to where she could hail a cab to Ikeja. There was business to do.

Tonight, she had a late-night date with Khaleed, her Turkish boyfriend. She looked forward to seeing him. That would very likely turn out to be another successful venture, she thought wistfully.

* * *

At five o ‘clock, Jide put all official matters aside and started writing on his fiction. He was already on the twelfth chapter, but still had a long way to go. The minimum page he had planned for it was 400 pages with twenty-five chapters.

If he continued at this pace, he should be finishing the writing in a couple of weeks’ time. Amanda had been helping him to have them typed on the computer, and to correct whatever correction he made.

He had no doubt that he would mention her in his acknowledgement. She was still quite feeling sore with him and had not been able to aptly express her feelings to him.

Today, they worked for about two hours on the book. Since morning, they had rarely spoken to each other. He had bought her a surprise package, a Nokia phone, to make up as he had promised. He then wondered why she was still acting as she was.

‘My baby,’ Tina gushed, hugging me. It was at that moment Mola’s transfer entered my account. I checked the amount. It was twenty thousand naira. Wow, twenty k for a massage of few minutes.

‘Give me your account details,’ I told Tina. ‘I want to send some money to you.’

‘Wow, Simi is a big babe now. A big, Lagos babe.’

I smiled. ‘Courtesy of you, Tina. I owe it to you.’

We hugged briefly again.

‘How was the place? I hope he’s treating you better by the day.’

‘You know what? He’s asking me to come and work for him as his P.A. He said he would pay the double of my current earnings.’

‘How lucky you are! Miss Simi Akolade, P.A. to Mr. Damola Koku.’

We laughed briefly. ‘But then, I can’t take it,’ I said.

Tina gazed at me. ‘Why?’

‘I can’t just leave Mrs. Shitta like that. She’s like a mother to me.’

‘You can explain things to her. I think she’ll understand.’

I still shook my head. ‘I told Mola that I’ll think about it, but really, there’s nothing much to think about. My mother will be livid in anger if she
gets to know that I’ve stopped working for Mrs. Shitta. And then, no, I can’t even walk up to Mrs. Shitta and tell her such a thing.’

Tina shrugged. ‘Well, it’s okay if that’s what you feel. But really, Simi, you’re moving up.’

I got Tina’s account details and transferred half of what I just received to her. I felt she really deserved it. Two days later, I got a call from
Mola.

‘Thank you for the other day,’ I said.

‘Oh, it’s nothing,’ he said condescendingly. ‘So, when are you going to resume as my P.A?’

I thought fast. ‘I’m still thinking over it,’ I said.

He laughed shortly over the line. ‘You know what? The longer it takes you to consider the offer, the more I am convinced that you’re the one for
the job.’

I laughed too. ‘Really? There are many ladies that are qualified for the job, sir. Some are even better qualified.’

‘You’re the one I’ve shortlisted for it. You’re the one I want to take up the job.’

I nearly said I would, but when I imagined what the countenance of Bimbola Akorede would be, and how disappointed Maria Shitta would look, I
withheld my assent.

‘Give me a little bit of more time,’ I said, wishing I could take it up. The money was tempting, but sometimes, other exigent matters override

She dropped out only a year ago. So far, all attempts she made doing something decent had not paid off – something like being a back-up singer or even modelling.

If schooling could not be again, she decided, a career in the music or entertainment industry would be worthwhile. She had played at some gigs and night clubs. One music producer who promised to help her make a demo and establish her as a star was more interested I her body than her talent.

The fact was her beautiful body had been the source of her livelihood in the past couple of years. She was always fortunate in picking up, or rather, being picked up, by the rich ones who didn’t appear to mind splashing money and gifts on her.

She had traversed in commercial sex trade a lot and had had men ranging from a randy heart attack-prone man in his fifties, to a dandy, drinking Lebanese.

Biyi, whom she called Eddy, wasn’t the first person that would be proposing the idea of going abroad to her. Indeed, there had been many promises.

The producer who had promised to help her in music had also promised to help her sign a contract in England. She didn’t believe him, though.

One Indian textile dealer promised to introduce her to the world of business in which she would be shuffling between Nigeria, Europe and Asia all on business. One Italian engineer promised to take her to Naples. Sometimes, she wished they would just do it rather than making promises.

Eddy was the one making the latest offer. The peculiar thing about it was that he was the one – the first one- to make the promise of taking her to Canada, a place that was her dreamland.

She had always loved music and she had imagined herself being such a superstar that was winning laurels and trophies, including Grammies.

It was not that she completely believed Eddy, but she told herself to give it a trial. A trial would not hurt, would it? Eddy looked crazy, (ah, plus his kinky taste), but crazy or not, if he could make his promise come true, who cares? Those were her thoughts.

After waiting for him for more than ten minutes on Saturday, she had decided to leave and come another day. Maybe something unforeseen had kept him off, she argued in her mind as she left the place. To her, he looked like a man who could keep his words.

This Monday evening, she had decided to visit him again. The real fact was Biyi, also known as Eddy, had totally forgotten that he had asked her to check him up on Saturday.

Even if he had remembered, he wouldn’t have given it much thought. Biyi had been partying with some friends that very hour she was waiting for him. It was one binge he had had till the early hours of Sunday morning.

She was glad at her venture this Monday evening. He was at home when she got there. He was the one that personally came down to the gate to open the pedestrian side of it.

‘Hello, angel. How’re you doing?’ he couldn’t remember her name. as he watched her enter the compound, he was at a loss on what to do. He was with another lady upstairs, so he just had to be smart.

While they were inside the compound, he did not move more than three meters away from the gate. The girl in his room upstairs was also very interesting. Biyi didn’t want the show to end just like that.

‘You said I should come on Saturday but you were not around.’ The tone was accusing.

He tried to smile genially and to look apologetic.

‘You won’t believe that I was very sick that day.’
She clouded her face. ‘Sick?’

‘Yes, kind of. I went to my uncle’s place, and there I developed a serious running stomach. It must have been something I ate. I even had to sleep over there that night.’ The lies came so glibly, now. Biyi was a master in the art of falsehood and deceit, no doubt.

We ate on. The taste was not as good as the last one I ate there, but still good enough for me to eat to my satisfaction.

‘How much do you earn there?’ he asked.

I sighed. Wait, had I come for an interview or what?

I told hm. I told him the truth.

‘That’s not much,’ he said. ‘See, Simi, I like you. I mean you strike me as a very intelligent lady. I want to make a proposal to you. I want you to
work for me.’

I stopped my food to stare at him for some seconds. ‘Work for you?’ I asked incredulously.

‘Yes.’

‘As what?’

He took a bit of the chicken before he answered. ‘As my Personal Assistant.’

I chuckled again. ‘I did not study humanities or secretarial studies,’ I pointed out.

‘It doesn’t matter. All you need is training on the job. With your intelligence, I know you’ll excel.’

I could not help but grin. But where did this his confidence in me come from? We knew each other just some days ago, yet he was ready to vouch for my intelligence. Gosh!

‘The job is still on for now. I want it to be filled as soon as possible, and I’ll like you to take it up. I’ll pay you double of what you earn now.’

Now, this was becoming serious. Double of what I currently earned? That would be fantastic. But how would Mrs. Shitta feel? She was the one that brought me to Lagos and she was not just my employer, she was a good friend of my mother and she was like a mother to me. I had only spent about three months plus in Lagos, would it be right for me to abandon the job and start another one?

Yet, there was expectation in the eyes of Mola. I had to apply wisdom.

‘Give me some time to think over it. I appreciate that confidence you repose in me, but I’m just about four months old on my current job. Let me think over it but I’ll give you my response soonest.’

He stared at me briefly and smiled. ‘Very smart answer,’ he said.

We ate the rest of the food in silence. After the meal, he popped champagne. The taste was very good. Mola symbolized goodness and right
now, I relished the moment of goodness with him.

I thought back to the last few weeks I spent in Ibadan, before relocating to Lagos. Events and circumstances had certainly transformed me. I had moved from the simple lady based in Ibadan to Lagos babe. Mummy and Deola would be shocked to see how really I had changed. Even Mrs.
Shitta, my Lagos godmother, would be surprised. Well, life was always full of surprises and I was not an exception.

‘I really had a busy schedule today,’ Mola said. ‘I need a very good body massage. You should be able to give a good massage, right?’

I smiled. ‘That will be no problem.’

He soon stripped himself to his boxer and singlet and lay on his belly on the bed. I tried the massaging, and from his responses, I didn’t do badly.

I was surprised that he soon slept off. Shuo! Could a man be so tired that he would ignore sex? I thought all men were forever crazy about sex. Sure, I still had a lot to learn.

I was even more surprised that throughout the night, he did not attempt any coital act. In the morning, he kissed me good morning the way a loving husband would kiss his wife. This Mola was a character.

‘How was your night?’ he asked.

‘Fine. What about yours?’

‘I feel refreshed. Thanks for that massage.’

I smiled. Did that mean my only mission was to give him massage?

I went to the bathroom to have a good bath. I had come with an extra cloth which I changed into.

‘You’ll get alert soon,’ he said, smiling at me. ‘Don’t forget my offer.’

I smiled back. ‘Of course, I won’t forget. Good bye.’

‘See you again.’

I nodded and left. I would have to fund my taxi fare today, I thought and grinned. From Ikoyi to Berger was moving against the traffic. Within forty minutes, I was at Comely Hotel. It was few minutes to eight.
