Alcohol is like motion without movement. |
As usual, Yeni was there, staring at the thirty-two inches flatscreen and already in her sleepwear. It was a very transparent and sexy one, all for dear hubby. She stood up to give him a smile and a welcome. He clasped her waist in his hands and swooped on her luscious lips with kisses. ‘I’m sorry I’m late,’ he said, just as he did the previous night. ‘It’s the work. Don’t worry, I’m going to cut down on those hours so that I can always be with my darling wife on time.’ ‘You must be tired.’ She helped him out of his coat, helped him to loosen and remove his tie, and then removed his shoes and socks. That was Yeni, the caring wife. ‘You must be tired,’ she repeated. ‘You’re right. Talking about those legal documents and those legal mumbo jumbos. Sometimes, I wished I hadn’t left the law chamber. Private practice could be fun, you know.’ She nodded as if she knew. ‘But you don’t have to complain, darling. The pay is good and … ‘ ‘I know, I know.’ He grinned. ‘In fact, if not for the prospects, I wonder why I should be holed up in an office all day long.’ It was a standard ironic statement. In the real sense of it, Jide loved his job. Perhaps, he needed to make more biting statement to blame something on his shortcoming as far as connubial commitment was concerned. ‘Let me check if your dinner is ready,’ she put in. She always called his office just about official closing time to ask him what he would like for dinner. He had told her he wanted pounded yam tonight. As usual, the pounding machine would be on the rescue. His favorite snail-grilled egusi soup would complement the delicacy. By the time she came back, he was already decked in pajamas. ‘It’s ready.’ He smiled and followed her to the dining table in the large sitting-room. The food smelt delicious, and so was the taste. He enjoyed it tremendously and he made sure he passed the appropriate compliment at the right time. She ate in silence while she savored the food and his commendations. The unexpected call she had received that evening was still giving her a lot of concern, although she had been playing it cool as much as she could. She had decided not to tell him for now. It was still better not to involve him for now. The dinner was over and the maid servant came to clear the plates. The couple returned to their bedroom upstairs. ‘How far with your writing?’ she asked. She always showed a great deal of interest in his writing. Yeni was an avid reader but his kind of writing wasn’t exactly the kind she loved to read. She preferred the romantic stuff and would go for anything written by the likes of Daniel Steele. Jide would laugh at her choice and call it the ‘effeminate feminine’ stuff. ‘You should try some hard stuff,’ he had suggested several times. She had actually tried some of them and had decided they gave her the aches. She couldn’t simply stand the violence and the gory thrills. On the question she asked, Jide replied that he was making good progress and was already in the tenth chapter. He reaffirmed his belief that when eventually it appeared in prints and in the market, it would be a block buster. ‘I know you’re capable of becoming a great writer,’ his wife told him encouragingly. She always marveled at his high sense of optimism and had been careful not to be a discouraging block. ‘Just let the millions start rolling in, and I’ll get you that villa I promised in Switzerland.’ Yeni laughed. He had a high sense of humor and he was at it again. ‘You said you’ve not been to the Caribbean Island, right?’ he did not wait for an answer. ‘Don’t worry, we’ll go to any place of your choice, be it the Bahamas or Trinidad & Tobago.’ She laughed shortly again. As soon as they entered the bedroom, he lifted and they flopped on the bed together. ‘My oh my,’ she exclaimed. ‘You could’ve broken my back, great lover.’ He feigned surprise. ‘I didn’t really know you’ve got such a delicate backbone, but I’m sure we can fix it.’ ‘Can you? Are you sure you can do that?’ ‘Why not? Let’s say I have the Midas touch.’ ‘Really?’ He was on top of her and there was an etched lustful look on his face. ‘You’ve just eaten, mister,’ she reminded him. ‘Won’t you wait for digestion?’ ‘Of course, I will, doctor.’ He smiled. ‘I’m sorry I forgot all about ethics.’ He lay by her side and she placed her head on his broad chest. ‘Your heart is beating, thump, thump, thump,’ she said. ‘And how’s your own beating? Or is it not beating at all?’ ‘You’re such a lousy assessor.’ ‘Thanks for your compliment. How was your day today?’ She shrugged. ‘So, so.’ ‘Does that mean it was good?’ ‘You could say that again.’ ‘I’ll give you another surprise package one of these days.’ ‘I know.’ ‘You did? Well, I have a surprise one for you right now.’ He didn’t give her a chance to say anything further. The kiss was long and enervating, and they were short of breath when it was over. He was about to repeat the act when a telephone rang.it was Yeni’s own. ‘Oh, damn,’ he swore softly. ‘Now, who could be calling at this hour?’ He picked the call before she could do. ‘Hello?’ There was silence from the end of the line. After seconds of not hearing anything, he cut the connection. ‘Who was it?’ she asked. ‘An unknown number, and there was no response.’ Her mind dashed to the infamous call she had received hours ago. She wondered if that could be Biyi that was calling. She didn’t save the number he had used to call her. Yeni became unsettled again. If it were him, that meant he was up to some terrible mischief. She knew the kind of person he was and was not very pleased about some past deeds and misdeeds. But she continued to wonder how Biyi got her number in the first place. Perhaps a mutual friend had given the returnee. Her mind hovered on telling her husband about the call, but – again – she quickly dismissed the idea. She would handle it all alone, she thought. Indeed, it seemed unfair to bring him in. she had involved herself in a mess, which – she believed – she must get herself out of, all by herself. Jide forgot the unanswered call and made passionate love to his wife. He was always good in that. Unlike him, she was only pretending to be enjoying the act. Her thinking was distant and troubled. Amanda was pretty, cool and vivacious. Jide was convinced there wouldn’t be any harm in trying. For three years now that he had been married, he had never cheated his wife. Somehow, this intending tryst gave him a secret thrill. ‘Let’s go,’ he said, quite irrelevantly as she was set to leave. She nodded as if it mattered. The office was on the eight floor of one of the numerous skyscrapers that adorned the sky of Marina, Lagos. Standing shoulder to shoulder, they rode the elevator to the ground floor. He had to resist the impulsive urge of grabbing her and crushing her lips with kisses right there. He grinned as he refrained himself. A security man in the lobby at the ground floor saw them to his car. As usual, Jide gave him a tip. ‘Ah, God bless, sir,’ the guy said, smiling boyishly. Jide waved at him. The engine of the SUV roared into life. In a late hour like this, he preferred to go home in his car, rather than the official car. ‘What’s the plan tonight?’ she asked at last. ‘I’m a little bit tired,’ he replied casually. ‘I think I’ll just drop you and be on my way.’ He drove the car towards Obalende where he hoped to make it to Ikeja via the Third Mainland Bridge. ‘You’ve always overworked yourself,’ she reminded him. She had said it before. ‘Why don’t you just take it easy?’ He felt like laughing, but grinned instead. He was not totally ready to commit himself into this relationship. It was one in which he hoped he would not be ensnared passionately. There must never be strings attached. All the same, from all indications, Amanda was prodding him on. ‘I enjoy the work,’ he replied shortly. ‘I know.’ She loosened his red tie a bit, like a real caring lover. ‘But that’s no excuse not to relax on the job. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.’ This time around, he couldn’t suppress the laughter. ‘For God’s sake, you’re sounding off like my mother.’ Was that a compliment or a reproach? She did not mind whatever it was. She joined him in the short laughter. ‘You’ll give yourself stress if you continue this way,’ she said seriously. He didn’t argue with her but nodded. They talked about this and that, his mind veering on and off. After thirty minutes of driving, he got to Maryland bus stop and stopped. She lived in an estate around that place. ‘We’ll have a good time out tomorrow,’ he told her. It sounded like a promise and she nodded. She didn’t really like the seemingly blank promise, but managed to look indifferent. He gave her a peck just before she slid out of the car. ‘Good night, then.’ ‘Goodnight,’ he replied and engaged the gear of the car. It was a few minutes to eight in the evening and he knew his wife would be looking forward to his coming home. Despite the fact that Yeni hadn’t given him a child, he still so much loved her, or so he felt. He briefly had a reminiscence of his relationship with her. He had met her in a friend’s birthday party, fallen in love on the first sight and – barely eight months after – wedded her gracefully. She had all he wanted in a woman: she was tall, beautiful, regal and bewitching. He had called her ‘the total woman’. It was a blissful affair. Besides many other good qualities, she was good at the home front. Jide had, true to his words, taken on a caring and homely one. As for her miscarriages, he believed the problem would soon be over and he would become a proud father. His mother had expressed serious reservations about his wife’s state, most of which – unfortunately – were unpleasant. ‘All these modern girls,’ she had often said in vitriol, ‘they would end up with such problem after they had seriously messed around when single. All those abortions!’ ‘Oh, no, mummy,’ he would say. ‘Don’t talk like that.’ He had tried as much as possible to dispel her insinuations, but with little success. It was almost eight o’clock when he got to the gate of his house. He hooted the horn to draw the attention of Audu, the security man. Some seconds later, he hooted it again. Audu was becoming erratic these days. It was obvious he was becoming negligent in his duty as he was not as assiduous as he used to be. He finally emerged in his caftan and with all the time in the world, opened the gate wide enough for the car to drive in. Alex, one of Deji’s junior brothers, came out of the main building to welcome him. ‘Welcome, brother,’ Alex greeted. ‘Alex, you’ve come? How was school?’ ‘We’ve been sent packing from the school,’ Alex explained. He was an undergraduate of Economics in a federal university in the north, and his sudden coming to Lagos was not without a surprise. ‘I tried your number but could not get through.’ ‘Really?’ Alex tried a grin to shrug it off. The university authority had sent them out of the school after an imbroglio between the academic staff and the institution’s senate. In a rare show of solidarity, the students had demonstrated in support of the lecturers. Emboldened somehow, the lecturers too had refused to go to the lecture rooms. At the end, the situation became messy and the authority thought it was better to direct the students out of the campus in order to forestall uglier circumstances from cropping up. Jide took his story in thoughtfully. It was one sad reality of the Nigerian educational system. He exchanged more pleasantries with his younger brother as they made their way inside the building. He made straight for the master bedroom where his wife would most likely be. ‘Hello?’ he paced in, looking solemnly. As usual, Yeni was there, staring at the thirty-two inches flatscreen and already in her sleepwear. It was a very transparent and sexy one, all for dear hubby. She stood up to give him a smile and a welcome. He clasped her waist in his hands and swooped on her luscious lips with kiss. NO PART OF THIS STORY SHOULD BE USED WITHOUT THE EXPRESS PERMSSION OF THE WRITER THIS STORY IS DEDICATED TO ALMIGHTY GOD Above the Shadows Jide was always busy these days. Officially, work closed at 5.00 p.m., but he always remained in office, sometimes as late as 9.00 p.m. Tonight, for the past one hour, he had been surfing the internet on his lap top. The world-wide technological bug had caught up with him and he found himself becoming addicted to the world of the wireless communication. He was the company secretary to an indigenous oil marketing firm, Exoss Oil and Gas. It was a prestigious job with a fat pay. At thirty-four, he was a figure that elicited envy among peers. Right now, he was working on his fiction, which he normally did after the official closing hours. He hoped to make it a blockbuster, as fantastic as the idea was. He would like to be in the league of writers like John Grisham. It was a tall dream, but there was no crime in dreaming. At ten minutes to six, his personal assistant popped inside his office. She had some papers with her. They were the prints out of the latest pages of his manuscript. Amanda, the P.A had been doing some overtime to get them typed and edited. She didn’t mind the extra effort. Her boss attached some generous pecks to her efforts. Besides, Jide had recently taken more than passing interests in her. She found herself not resisting his overtures. Indeed, that was an understatement as she had actually been goading him on. ‘How far?’ he asked, his eyes still glued to the monitor. ‘All done.’ She gave him the papers which were all neatly arranged according to their pages. She was always the efficient assistant. ‘Good,’ he said, grinning. His eyes didn’t leave the monitor. ‘Thanks,’ he added as an afterthought. She shrugged it off. ‘Another minute, and we’ll be off,’ he informed. She didn’t say anything but sat on one of the seats facing his desk. Apart from the muffled sound from the split air-conditioning system and the soft rattling of the keys on the keyboard, everywhere was silent. After five minutes, he whistled softly and shut down the computer. ‘Whoosh, what a day!’ he exclaimed, looking at his wristwatch. ‘How did it go?’ ‘Fine, fine.’ He stood up. Amanda was on her feet too. She removed his coat from the hanging rack and helped him to wear it. Amanda was about twenty-seven. She had a higher diploma in Business Administration from a federal polytechnic. She was good in secretarial duties and had been an efficient and reliable P.A. She was still single and that meant she was vulnerable to her boss’ advances. Amanda was only employed as Jide’s P.A some months ago. At first, Jide did not have any amorous inclination towards her. Then, about a fortnight ago, he practically started noticing how desirable she was and how desirous he was becoming. He believed he still loved his wife, Yeni, but … perhaps if he was discreet enough, there would not be a crime in having a fling with Amanda. Couldn’t Amanda provide the very much needed succor one needed after the office stress? Amanda was pretty, cool and vivacious. Jide was convinced there wouldn’t be any harm in trying. For three years now that he had been married, he had never cheated his wife. Somehow, this intending tryst gave him a secret thrill. ‘Let’s go,’ he said, quite irrelevantly as she was set to leave. His explanation seemed a bit plausible, so I simmered down a bit. ‘I’m so sorry for eall the embarrassment she might have caused you.’ I still played the victim. ‘Embarrassment? It was more than that. She threatened to deal with me if I don’t leave you alone. She accused me of trying to snatch you away from her.’ ‘Oh, Simi, my darling. I’m so sorry for all these. Please, pardon me for not telling you about her before now. Kate is a highly temperamental lady, one of the reasons why I severed the relationship. But it’s like she has not got over the reality of parting ways with her. I’ll surely compensate you for all these troubles.’ ‘And the threats she made. What about all those threats?’ He tried to smile it off. 'Are you really sure I'm safe with this your ex-fiancée?' I probed. 'Please, I don't have the mind of trouble.' Tayo had to assure and reassure me that there was no cause for alarm. ‘There’s no cause for alarm, my dear. She’s only bluffing. There’s nothing he can do. You’re mine and I’m yours. No one can take that fact away.’ ‘Ah, please o, I don’t want any trouble. If the love between you and your Kate is still strong, please, I’m ready to step aside. I don’t want trouble.’ He smiled to reassure again. ‘There won’t be any trouble. Don’t make yourself distressed over nothing. As I said, Kate was only bluffing. The only thing that baffles me is why my own sister will be colluding with her on this matter. But, you don’t worry, my dear.’ I tried to believe him and to be rest assured that there was nothing to worry about. ‘Kate is not only bad tempered, she’s also a thief. How else can one explain the fact that she took my phone without my knowledge? Please, Simi, don’t be angry.’ I shrugged. ‘It’s alright.’ Some minutes after Tayo left, Tina came in. I had not seen her since the day she told me about the Abuja senators. Somehow, I was glad to see her again. ‘Hey, Tina baby, good to see you again,’ I gushed. ‘Ah, my dear Simi, good to see you too.’ We hugged briefly. ‘Oh, Simi, you’re really missed out. If you see the way those Senators spent money, you would be dazzled. It was such a fun-filling time.’ ‘I see,’ I replied. I had decided that I would not be swayed by whatever she enthused about her experience. ‘Ah, those guys know how to spend money. Honestly, Simi, I wished you were there.’ I shook my head . ‘Honestly, I believe it’s good I didn’t go. Tina, for anything like this, my answer will be no.’ ‘Na you sabi. But don’t be jealous when my sports convertible car arrives.’ I smiled. I was certain I would never be jealous, although I didn’t tell her so. After some time, I decided to tell her about the incident of Kate and the infamous phone call. ‘Are you sure this Tayo guy is not deceiving you? All these men cannot be trusted, you know.’ 'Well, he has assured me that there's no cause for alarm,' I said. 'Don't so much depend on him,' she said. 'A man like that cannot be relied upon at all. It is better you have another man standing by.' I smiled at her suggestion, although I knew she wasn't far from the truth. But it turned out that I had nothing to fear about Kate. A week after her call, I didn't hear a thing from her again. This emboldened me to say yes to Tayo's proposition. 'Oh, Simi, darling. This is a good thing you have done. I can assure you that you will never regret this.' From the moment I finally said yes to him, I noticed a complete change in his attitude. The first noticeable change was when he handed his ATM card to me. 'You can withdraw any amount of money from it and use it for shopping.’ I was wide-eyed in surprise. 'You don't mean it, Tayo.' 'I do.' He grinned. 'It's all for my darling wife-to-be.' He went on to tell me the pin number. I was glad about the gesture. It seemed I was beginning to have good luck with men of magnanimity. I remembered Mola gave me a car which I hardly used. Now, Tayo was showing large-heartedness too. It was in the evening that Tayo gave me the card. I promised to make good use of it the following day, which was Saturday. The schedule of duty showed that I would be on duty in the afternoon. After my bath in the morning, I went to the nearest bank to check the account balance. Whatever was there would largely determine what I would buy and how much I would spend. The account balance was more than five millions. Wow, so Tayo had that much in one account! Good, that meant I had a lot to buy. I withdrew the maximum I could withdraw that day and took a cab to Ikeja for the shopping. I bought some clothes and ladies accessories. But at the back of my mind, I wanted to be modest in my spending. I wasn't the greedy type and I didn't want to abuse the privilege he had given me. I therefore returned the card to him. 'Are you sure you've used it to your satisfaction?' he asked. 'I want you to buy all that you can buy.' I smiled pleasantly at him. 'I'm okay for now. Next time I need more things to buy, I will let you know.' 'Okay.' A couple of hours later, after he left, he called my line. 'Hello, why didn't you spend any money?' he asked. 'I spent some,' I pointed out. 'All together, I withdrew about four hundred thousand naira.' 'That's not much. You should have taken much more that.' 'As I said, I'm okay for now.' He laughed over the line. 'Alright, but please let me know when you need to make new purchases.' I chuckled. 'Sorry, I didn't. You didn't tell me you need prayers.' 'We all do,' he said. 'Specifically, I need prayers that God should touch the heart of the lady I want to marry so that she will say yes, and the wedding can be in earnest.' I felt like laughing. 'I see.' 'Is that all you will say?' I paused briefly. 'For now, yes.' 'Well, thanks for being candid.' 'Thanks for calling,' I told him. The conversation went on for another minute before he terminated it. The following day was Monday. By noon, I got a surprise visit from a lady who introduced herself as Anita. 'Mr. Tayo sent me to deliver this parcel to you,' she said. A parcel from Tayo? I collected it and thanked her. In my office, I carefully opened the package, wondering what was inside. I didn't wonder for long. There was a set of diamond-studded rings, a box of 18 carat gold Raymond Weil wrist watch for female, Oil of Olay soap and body cream, and Nina Ricci perfume. I had no doubt that these exotic items were expensive. Did he have to do this? Could this buy affection, especially genuine one? Well, not that I didn't like them. I don't think any right thinking lady would reject these. All the same, I wondered if I would genuinely fall in love with him as a result of this. But then, I remembered what Tina used to say: it was better a lady went for the man that was crazy about her, than going for the man she was crazy about. I picked my phone to call him and to thank him for his generosity. 'Don't mention, Simi darling. You are a Princess and you deserve more than that.' 'Many thanks to you,' I repeated. 'It's okay. Yes, I will be coming around to pay you a visit this office.' 'There's no problem whatsoever with that,' I replied, smiling. 'I look forward to seeing you.' 'Okay, dear. See you then.' I was thinking of how to entertain him when he would come around when I had another call again. This time around, from an unknown number. 'Hello,' I said into the mouthpiece. 'Hello,' the caller said. 'Am I speaking with Simi?' 'Yes, please. Who's talking?' 'The name is Kate. I'm Tayo's fiancée. I want to let you know that he is engaged and you should leave him alone. Leave Tayo alone and look for your own man.' I was too stunned to say a word. Tayo was already engaged? But he never told me that! And this lady that was calling, how did she get to know my number? 'O... Okay, I've heard you,' I stuttered in reply. 'It's not just about hearing me,' the seemingly belligerent lady fired back. 'It's about you leaving him alone and not having anything to do with him again. Listen, and listen good. I know the hotel where you work and I'm monitoring you. If you don't want any trouble, just leave him alone and go and look for your own man.' With that, she cut the line. This was serious. If there was something I hated, it was receiving threats. It was even more annoying if the threats were related to fighting over lovers. I thought of what to do. The lady who called herself Kate said she was monitoring me, how true was this? In any case, I decided that the earlier Tayo was intimated with this fact, the better. So, I picked up my phone to call his number. After the third ring, the phone was picked up at the other end. 'Hello,’ I said. ‘But, Tayo, why didn’t you tell me you were already engaged? Why did you have to subject me to ridicule?’ ‘You’ve not seen any ridicule yet,’ a voice fired back. I was astounded and had to quickly check the number I had dialed. There was no mistake the fact that it was Tayo’s line. ‘So, you still have the gut to call his number after I’ve warned you. Can’t you see that you’re shameless?’ It was the voice of Kate. She was the one raving on the phone; on Tayo’s line. But how did she get hold of his number/phone? Why was she the one that picked his call? I was not good in making verbal assaults, or exchanging tantrums, so I cut off the connection. Phew! This was serious. How come Kate was the one that picked Tayo’s call? I shrugged. Obviously, I would have to wait for developments to unravel the knotty circumstance. Part of the unraveling came some hours later when Tayo visited my office. ‘Now, what kind of drama d’you think you’re playing?’ I challenged him, barely allowing him to sit down. ‘Drama? Do I look like a playwright?’ He laughed briefly but when he saw my stern countenance, he stopped. ‘Simi, darling, what’re you talking about?’ ‘You have a lot of queries to answer,’ I said heatedly. ‘First, why didn’t you tell me you were engaged? Two, why did you give her my number? Three, why didn’t you pick up your call?’ He looked as if I had bashed him with a bang. ‘Wait a minute. Are you saying Kate called you?’ ‘Yes. Why didn’t you tell me about her? What kind of game is this you’re playing?’ ‘Oh, my God. So, it was Kate that took my phone. How could she do that?’ I stared at him, numbed. ‘Simi, please, listen to me. First and foremost, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about Kate. She was my ex-fiancée. We parted ways some months ago. She and Joyce, my sister, are friends and they visited my office this afternoon. There was a time I briefly left them in the office to ease myself. That must be the time Kate took the phone. It was much later after they had gone that I realized the phone was missing. I couldn’t figure out how I had misplaced it. I could not have imagined that Kate would take it. I left her and Joyce in the office just briefly. How could Kate do this?’ His explanation seemed a bit plausible, so I simmered down a bit. ‘I’m so sorry for all the embarrassment she might have caused you.’ I still played the victim. ‘Embarrassment? It was more than that. She threatened to deal with me if I don’t leave you alone. She accused me of trying to snatch you away from her.’ ‘Oh, Simi, my darling. I’m so sorry for all these. There was another slight pause. 'You're very beautiful, Simi.' Oh, my God, I caught a glimpse of lasciviousness in his eyes. Even madam's husband would eye me in a salacious way. 'Er, thank you, sir,' I mumbled. 'See, if you don't mind and if you know what I mean, I can take good care of you.' That was it. That was where he was going all along. I realized that his offer of making me Assistant Medical Director was to 'wet the ground.' 'I don't understand what you mean, sir,' I said. He snickered. 'Of course, you do. If you comfort my side, I will comfort you on every side. Maria has traveled to Ibadan and may not be back until Monday. If you keep me company instead of making me to have lonely nights, then, I will also treat you very right. I'm ready to treat you like a princess if you allow me to do so.' What he said was not exactly shocking, but the fact that it was coming from him made it outlandish. I shook my head. 'But, I'm like a daughter to you, sir,' I said. 'I see you as daddy.' He chuckled. 'Oh, dear Simi. Forget all those talks. Let me take care of you.' I shook my head again. Men could be so avaricious! How could this man who was my father's age mate be saying things like this? Where was his decency and dignity? 'I'm sorry, I can't do any such thing,' I said. 'Madam must not hear and ....' 'Who will tell her? How will she hear?' I shook my head again. Yes, I was now a Lagos babe. But I would be a babe with dignity and with difference. He stood up, dipped his right hand in his pocket and brought out some currencies. He removed one hundred Euros and dropped it on my lap. 'I know you'll change your mind. Have that. The house is free, so I'll be expecting you upstairs. You'll have much more than this later.' With that, he smiled and walked out of the room. I was too stunned to say anything. Oh, Lord, oh Lord. Some men just didn't have shame. The day God was giving shame to human beings, some men were not available. In fact, on that day, Dr. Shitta was completely nowhere to be found! I looked at the money he dropped on my lap. It reminded me of the guy that lodged in one of the suites of Comely Hotel the other time. So, with this money, Dr. Shitta hoped to make me betray his wife. With this, he expected me to run up to his room and throw off my clothes. He was wrong. I would 'chop' his money and I would not 'show face.' If he liked, let him bring a thousand Euros and even sterling pounds, I would not accede to his demand. I never knew he was such a 'yeye' man until now. That night, I made sure I secured my door very well before I slept. I wouldn’t want a randy, old man on the prowl to access my cozy abode. It was Tayo's call that woke me the following morning. 'Hello, darling. Did you have a night sleep?' he asked. 'Yes, I did,' I answered. 'What about you?' 'It was a good night,' he replied. 'But I knew it would have been better if you were by my side.' 'Ah, thank God for everything,' I said, for lack of any other thing to say. 'It's like you don't really believe I love you,' he said. 'Did I say anything like that?' 'No, you did not. But all your actions show that you don't believe. I have ways of proving it. At this stage, there's a particular way I can prove it.' 'Really? I hope it's a good way.' 'Of course, it is.' He suddenly laughed across the line. 'Anyway, today is Sunday. I suppose you'll be going to the church, right?' 'Yes, I will. You'll be going to the church too, won't you?' 'Sure,' he said. We chatted a bit more. A couple of hours later, I took my bath and prepared for church service. Luckily a very popular Pentecostal church had started having services in the hotel banquet hall. I had decided to join them. I dressed in simple blouse and black skirt. The service was interesting and I had a full-filling time. I went home straight when it was all over. I thought the randy Doctor Shitta would come again to disturb me with his amorous advances, but he did not. Maybe he had finally got shame. I changed to jeans trousers and t-shirt and moved to the hotel for afternoon duty. Tayo called to ask how the church service was. 'Fine,' I replied. 'It was a wonderful experience. How about you? Did you make it to the church?' 'No, I wasn't able to,' he replied. 'I hope you prayed for me.' I chuckled. We waved at each other and he drove off. It was getting to dusk. I moved to the residential building, thinking of a successful outing. In my room, still in my outing cloth, I lay on the bed and imagined things. I thought of the possibility of marrying Tayo and decided that it was not a bad idea. There was no doubt that I had to psyche up myself to marriage life. When I said marriage life, I meant the normal one between a male and a female. It was one reality I could not keep running away from. There was a soft knock at the door that brought me back to reality. I got up from the bed. That must be Bimpe, I reasoned as I moved to the door. I opened it and was surprised to find Dr. Shitta, madam's husband at the doorway. 'Good evening, sir,' I greeted in full courtesy. 'Good evening, Simi. How're you?' 'Fine, sir.' I stood at the doorway. 'Can I come in?' he asked. That was another surprise. 'Yes, sir.' I stepped inside to allow him to come in. He sat on the only chair in the room while I sat on the bed. 'Maria tells me you're really hard-working,' he said. 'Thank you, sir.' He stared at me. 'I like it when a young lady like you channels her energy into something very positive. I like it when someone shows dedication and commitment. Keep the good work up.' 'Thank you, sir.' There was a brief pause and I wondered if his purpose of coming was just to commend my commitment. 'Em, Simi, I have a deal for you.' That was another surprise. What kind of deal would Doctor Shitta have with me? 'A deal, sir?' 'Yes, a deal. You studied Pharmacy, right?' I nodded. 'Yes, sir.' 'Good.' He paused briefly again. 'After many years of practicing medicine both here in Nigeria and in England, I want to set up a hospital here in Nigeria, and when it starts, I want you to work there as Assistant Medical Director.' I was visibly surprised. 'Oh, that's very considerate of you, sir.' Then, I remembered I was under an obligation with his wife. 'But, what about madam, sir? What about the fact that I am already working for her?' The man grinned and waved his hand dismissively. 'There's absolutely no problem with her. She has totally agreed with me. But don't discuss this with her, yet. When the time comes, she will be the one to bring the matter up for discussion. Just know that it's the plan we have in the offing.' 'Thank you, sir. Thank you for your consideration.' 'You're welcome. So, how's your weekend?' 'Fine, sir. All is well.' There was another slight pause. (After the long break, I'm back) He did not give up. ‘What about me taking you to know my place? Let me take you home.’ I considered this briefly and decided to concede. ‘Alright. Maybe this Saturday.’ He grinned happily. ‘That’s good, my dear Simi.’ That Saturday, I would be doing morning shift which would end by two p.m. Then, I would have the rest of the day for myself. ‘I’ll come and pick you,’ he said. ‘What time should I come?’ ‘Come by four in the afternoon.’ He nodded. ‘I’ll be there.’ On Saturday afternoon, by three, I was already ready for him. I wore jeans trousers and t-shirt and looked modest. I waited for him at the lobby of the hotel and by quarter to four o’clock, he was around. ‘Wow, you look more beautiful than ever,’ he said, smiling boyishly. ‘Thanks for the compliments.’ ‘This way, please.’ He preceded me to the car park. His car was a low-slung jaguar XK. Like a gentleman, he opened the door for me. His house, surprisingly, was on the same street with Tina’s residence. The difference was it was a mansion that was completely private. I could see that his parents were very rich the moment he drove inside the compound. There was a long canopy that protected many luxury cars. The building was grand and the whole environment looked lush. ‘Welcome to my humble home,’ he said, smiling. I knew it was an irony, but I wondered if that statement was necessary. We went to the large sitting-room that had what looked like Italian furniture. Everything looked exotic. ‘Sit down, princess,’ he said. ‘Henceforth, you’re my princess.’ I smiled without saying a word. ‘Excuse me.’ I was left alone in the room. A couple of minutes later, a house maid walked to me. ‘Good evening, madam. Please, what can I offer you?’ she asked. 'Any drinks that does not have alcohol,' I answered. She nodded, left and within a minute was back with a tray containing a cold bottle of red wine and a glass. 'Thank you,' I mumbled. Tayo soon appeared. 'Esther, get me a glass cup too,' he told the maid. 'Yes, sir.' He came to sit by my side, opened the bottle of wine and poured the drinks for me. The maid brought his glass cup and he filled it up. We clinked the glasses with a smile permanently dancing on his face. 'I will ask you to tell me more about yourself, but before then, let me set the ball rolling.' So, he gave me the details about himself. I was all ears. 'Presently,' he concluded. 'I work in one of my father's companies as Accounts Manager. I ought to have moved to my own house, and I will soon do so. However, I don't want to live there all alone, so I need to marry. I want you to join me there.' My mind was busy. I realized that my relationship with him was just friendship. Now that Mola was no longer in the picture, why not give Tayo a chance? 'Marriage is a serious matter,' I said. 'I will have to pray about it.' He nodded. 'It's alright,' he said. 'I'm sure in your prayers, you'll see who the real husband is.' We chatted a bit more and intermittently take the wine. 'Why not let me take you to my room?' he asked, standing up. I stood up too. He picked the tray and led me out of the sitting to a short corridor. His room was by the left of the corridor. It was a very big room with the bathroom and toilet en-suite. Apart from the large bed, there was a chair and a desk with a reading lamp. There was also a leather double-seaters seat and a glass center table. On the wall by the side of the window was a large flat-screen. He flicked the electronic gadget on. We sat down and continued with our drinks. I was there for more than an hour. Tayo surprised me. Throughout my stay in his room, he did not touch me. Now, coming from a guy who appeared to be 'sophisticated', that was quite un-usual. I finally stood up. 'You've made my day,' he said. 'Thanks for coming.' 'Thanks for the hospitality,' I answered. We left the room back to the sitting where we met a man I suspected was his father. 'Ah, daddy,' Tayo said in eagerness. 'This is Simi, the lady I told you about.' I knelt down to greet him. 'Good evening, sir.' 'Good evening, Simi,' he answered. 'Good to see you. Omotayo has said a lot about you.' I smiled coyly. 'Thank you, sir.' 'She has been around for some time,' Tayo explained. 'And now, she's about to go.' 'Oh, I see. I hope you have been properly entertained.' 'Sure, dad,' Tayo answered. 'Good night, sir,' I said. 'Good night. See you again.' We stepped out of the building to the dimming sunshine. 'I'll take you back,' he said. I nodded as I didn't expect anything less. He took me back to Comely Hotel. 'You don't need to drive in,' I said. 'I can get down at the gate.' 'Oh, no.' He smiled. 'I will drive you to the front of the main entrance of the building.' That was what he did. 'Thank you so much,' I said as I alighted from the car. We waved at each other and he drove off. It was getting to dusk. I moved to the residential building, thinking of a successful outing. In my room, still in my outing cloth, I lay on the bed and imagined things. I thought of the possibility of marrying Tayo and decided that it was not a bad idea. A week after Mola's incident, Tayo came to my office. 'You did not see me and did not care,' he started. That was true. The events of the past days had made me to forget about him. 'I'm sorry,' I replied. 'I lost someone and have not been in the right frame of mind.' 'Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I've not been in the right frame of mind too. I had been sick in the last few days.' 'Sorry to hear that too. It's like it was a week of unpleasant things. So, how is your body now?' 'Well, I'm getting better.' He was with me in my office for some time. I offered him drinks but he, as usual, he declined. Somehow, I did not disclose to him that the man I had hoped to marry was dead. He affirmed his belief that I would be his wife, but I tactfully refused to comment on that. I now had all evenings to myself as Manu did not have the need for him to take me to Mola again. Tina still came occasionally. However, the incident of Mola changed some of my thinking. 'Two senators from Abuja are cooling off in Lagos, this weekend,' she announced. 'They need company.' I shook my head. How long would Tina keep indulging in 'runs'? 'I'm not interested,' I butted in. 'Hey, don't let Malo's matter ruined your happiness. He is gone and he's gone forever. You have your own life to lead. You must not allow him to weigh you down. Move on with your life.' 'I'm moving on with life,' I argued. 'Good. So, let's meet with these distinguished gentlemen. It's Nigerian money they want to spend. Let's eat our national cake through them.' Whether it was national cake or international cake, I had made up my mind that I would be content with what I earned legitimately, henceforth. I knew the kind of background I had and the kind of person I had grown to be. Despite my beauty and the continuous attention I got from men, I had never allowed myself to get carried away. ‘Tina, I’m not going,’ I said. ‘As a matter of fact, I will advise that you stick to a man and stop these ‘runs’ of a thing.’ She looked bemused. ‘Now, wait a minute. Don’t tell me you have become a ‘born again’ overnight. I don’t understand this your preaching at all.’ ‘I’m not preaching,’ I returned. ‘But I honestly believe we should not live a reckless life. With the income we earn legitimately, we should be okay. There’s no need for all these exploits.’ ‘Hey, it’s not just for the money. It’s for the fun of it.’ I shook my head. ‘I want no such fun again.’ ‘Alright, Miss Righteous. Do as you wish.’ She let me be and it was such a relief. Tayo did not give up on his desire. I must admit that he had a lot of doggedness. ‘I don’t want to be one of your numerous ladies,’ I told him. ‘Since you have many of them at your beck and call, I think it will do you well to leave me out of it.’ ‘Those ones you saw fawning over me during my birthday celebration were just seeking attention. I don’t have for them the kind of feeling I have for you. It’s you I love, Simi.’ I chuckled. ‘People always talk about love, yet they hardly understand what it truly means.’ ‘So, give me that chance to show you. I will show you what love is.’ Then, he looked at me curiously. ‘I don’t even know where you live. Can I pay you a visit at your home?’ I sighed. ‘I think it’s better you don’t. I live in the same house with my employer for now, and she may not like the idea.’ He did not give up. ‘I’ll be there.’ Get the complete story: https://publish.okadabooks.com/search?term=thrills Read other interesting stories: https://thrillplus..com/ |

I sat down to calm myself down. I obviously had to go and see him and see how he was faring. I picked my bag. The money inside would be enough to take me to Ikoyi and bring me back. Besides, I also had my ATM inside the bag, in case I needed to withdraw some money. I locked my office and went to meet Akin. 'I'm going to Ikoyi to see somebody now. It's a kind of emergency.' I took a cab to the hospital at Ikoyi. There, I met Manu, his driver at the reception hall of the big hospital. He stood up on seeing me and took some uncertain steps towards me. 'How's he?' I asked. He stared blankly at me in that very morose way. Just then, Tina emerged from the passageway. She came straight to me, held my left hand and led me to one of the seats. 'It's better we sit down,' she said. I sat and looked at her anxiously. 'You've got to take heart,' she said. 'In a matter like this, one has to take things easy and move on with life.' 'What are you saying? How's Mola?' 'He's dead.' 'What!?' My mind was instantly thrown into grief and consternation. Mola, dead? Oh, what a cruel fate. Tina held me while I cried quietly. I could hardly believe that Mola would die, just like that. It reminded of my father's death, except that the other one was much more serious. Tina comforted me as much as possible. I really appreciated her empathy. Later, Dekola, the immediate younger brother of Mola came around and took charge of things. Mola had introduced me to him as his next wife. It was apparent that death had aborted that wish. Mola's body had been taken to the morgue and the family would soon meet on funeral plans. After hanging around a bit, I left the place and took a cab back to Berger. The grief must have shown on my face as Akin asked what was wrong, the moment he saw me. 'I just lost somebody,' I told him. 'Oh, sorry about that.' I must say I was distraught. How could he die just like that? Now, what happened to his business? Kola and Maryam were orphans all of a sudden, and I felt so sorry for them. Then I imagined if I had married Mola. That meant I would become a widow so soon. My heart cringed at this thought. My mother became a widow at fifty-two. How could I become one at less than thirty? That would be just too soon. The tragedy of Mola meant I was back to being a lady without a future man. Then, I remembered Tayo and his dream. I shook my head. Mola's death must be a coincidence. To me, the possibility of marrying Tayo was very remote. My number one reason was because I knew he was a playboy. That day he did his birthday in the banquet hall, two ladies were clinging on to him as if their lives depended on it. Two ladies! Mrs. Shitta was also concerned about my countenance, so I told her. 'Is he the one that bought that car for you?' 'Yes, ma.' 'Oh, what a loss!' She came to hug me. 'Don't worry, take heart. I'm sure the good Lord will give you a perfect man. It must be His will that this one is not the one.' I nodded. 'Thank you, ma.' I suddenly realized that I did not really have good luck when it came to men. If at all anyone blamed me not retaining the love of Daniel, would I be blamed for the untimely death that happened to Mola? Indeed, I realized that I needed prayers. Tina called me the following day to intimate me about latest information from the office. Damola's immediate brother would be taking over the running of Mola's business. They were assured to continue with their work and remain steadfast. He nodded again. 'Let me start by saying that there are certain dreams I have that are very significant. The moment I wake up, I always realize such dreams as unique. Now, yesterday night, I had a very significant dream. I had a dream that you're my wife.' I stared at him for some seconds before I burst out laughing. He looked on solemnly, ignoring my poker. 'Seriously? What a dream! How could you believe that?' 'It will come to pass,' he said. 'Such a remarkable dream always comes to pass.' I wanted to laugh again, but stopped myself. I certainly wouldn't want to hurt him by my action. But, seriously, he was a dreamer, wasn't he? 'I'm sorry, I don't believe you,' I returned. 'That dream of yours is certainly not going to happen. No, no, no, I don't think so. You know I'm already in a serious relationship.' 'A unique dream like this always comes to pass,' he repeated. 'Oh, come on Tayo, wake up from your dreams.' He smiled and looked on determinedly. 'Just before I had this dream, I was thinking of coming to formally ask for your hand in marriage. But with the dream, there's no need I do that. I know the unique dream is as good as reality. It's just a matter of time. I'll wait for you, honey.' I became exasperated. 'Hey, Tayo, stop it. And don't call me that, please.' He got to his feet, still smiling and still looking confident. 'I'll be going for now,' he announced. I only waved at him and he was gone. Now, what kind of dream was that? How could he dream that I was his wife? I paused to think of its possibility but decided it was not possible. I was not the kind that would gladly betray trust. Though I did not want Mola completely as husband, I would not just renege on my words and embrace Tayo. Tayo was just a dreamer. Mrs. Shitta spent four weeks in England before she returned. This time around, her husband, Doctor Olu Shitta, came home too. I could see that she looked fresh and refreshed. I gave her the details of the main events that had happened in her absence and the business reports. Mrs. Shitta was impressed with all I had done. 'This is very impressive, Simi,' she said. 'You've really done well.' Two days after she came back, she employed Akin, a man of about thirty-four years as Assistant Business Manager. That would relieve me of some duties, and gave me room to have some relaxations. It would also mean Mola could now insist on our visiting Ibadan once he got to know that I had an assistant. Tina and I continued to be soul mates. We still had our secret dalliance, but of course it remained secret. I had to make up my mind about taking Mola to Ibadan. I knew very soon, he would bring the matter up again, and I would have no option than to take him to meet my mum. This Friday, he said we would have to go to Ibadan. 'I need to act fast,' he said. 'I don't want any young chap to snatch you away from me.' It was Wednesday. That meant we had two days to go. I decided I would tell Mrs. Shitta that I would take Friday off. I would tell her tomorrow, Thursday. Things went very well that Wednesday. I could see that Akin was learning fast and was keen about his job. That was good. It would make my task easier. About four p.m, I got a call from Tina. 'Hello, dear,' I greeted in my jovial self. 'Simi, something has happened.' I caught my breath. Her tone and brusqueness certainly indicated that something was wrong. 'What is it?' I asked in a shaky tone. 'It's Mola.' My heart beat increased. 'What happened to him?' There was a long pause. 'What happened to him?' I repeated. 'He had a heart attack. We just rushed him to the hospital.' 'What! A heart attack? Oh, my God. Which hospital is he?' 'All Saints Hospital at 133 Awolowo Road, here in Ikoyi.' 'Okay. Thanks for telling me. I'll soon be there.' I dropped the telephone. I suddenly realized that my hands were shaking. Oh, God, have mercy. I found myself muttering some prayers. What I told him was not completely true. I could travel to Ibadan in the morning and come back towards evening, but somehow, my mind was not fully in support of taking Mola home, yet. I had this restraint at the back of my mind that despite all his zeal and seemingly determination to take me as his wife, I was yet to be completely convinced that he was the man for me. Mola was nice, no doubt. And he was very generous. I could not even think of the man that would finally be the one, but it was just that a cloud of uncertainty was cast upon Mola. Three weeks after Mrs. Shitta traveled to England, we continued to communicate by telephone. She would ask about how business was going, and I would give her summary of the reports. Her absence, just like Tina said, was a chance for me to play a smart one and make some money for myself, but I would not do that. I had made up my mind to do the work dedicatedly and honestly. Tina teased that I was yet to learn the tricks, but I answered that I was okay with what I was earning legitimately. If I thought Tayo was content with friendship, then I was making a big mistake. On a cool, early Thursday evening, he came to my office. I was doing some calculations when he gently rapped at the door, opened it a bit and peered inside. 'Good evening, Simi,' he greeted. I looked up from my calculations and smiled at him. 'Good evening, Tayo, how're you?' He came in with his easy smile. 'Sit down,' I offered. 'You're a bit early today.' 'Yes. I hope you're not very busy.' 'Not exactly, but let me finish these calculations.' He grinned. 'Okay.' He sat quietly while I finished the task. 'So, what can I offer you, Tayo?' I asked. He shook his head. 'Nothing. I'm actually here to give you a message.' I looked up at him sharply. 'Now, what message could that be?' He nodded knowingly. 'I want you to be through with what you're doing first.' 'Okay o.' Another couple of minutes, I was through. 'Yes, I'm all ears now.' He nodded again. With my good income and steady flow of other perks, I decided to call mummy and surprise her. 'Hello, mum, how's everything in Ibadan?' 'Things are fine here. What about there in Lagos?' 'Things are quite good,' I answered. 'Ehn, ehn, mummy, I want you to get a painter to paint that house. I believe it' high time we gave the place a face-lift. Let the painter do the estimate and let me know the costs. I'll bear everything.' 'Oh, that's my daughter,' she said. 'You're the true daughter of your father.' I also decided to be sending some money to Deola to augment what mummy was giving her. A week after I first met Tayo, he came to my office late in the afternoon. 'I've come to greet you and see your face,' he said. I smiled at him. 'What's so special about my face?' 'Ah, you may not know it, but everything about you is bewitching.' 'There are more ladies that even more beautiful,' I pointed out. 'You're beautiful inside and outside,' he went on. 'None has the kind of quality you have.' 'Thanks for the compliments. But I believe if you really look well enough, you will find those that have the quality you talked about. Simi is probably just one of them.' He shook his head vehemently. 'No, you're not one of them. You're special. You're above others.' 'Oh, enough of your flatters. What can I offer you?' He grinned. 'Hearing your sweet words is good enough for me.' Despite his answer, I asked one of the staffers to give him bottled water. We chatted for some time before he finally indicated his departure. 'You've made my day,' he said. 'Thanks for your time and attention.' 'You're welcome,' I told him. Later that night when I was in Mola's house, he said he would need to know my parents. 'My father's dead, while my mother is well alive,' I said. 'Tell me about them,' he prompted. I told him how loving and compassionate my daddy was to his children and his wife before he met untimely death in a road accident. I also told him about my mother, now a matron at University College Hospital in Ibadan. Mola seemed to be interested in my tales. 'I'll need to know my future mother-in-law on time,' he said. 'Can't you set a weekend aside, even one day, that we can travel to Ibadan to see her?' I nodded. 'But it has to be when my boss and employer, Mrs. Shitta comes back from her U.K trip. She said she would employ an assistant manager, but she's yet to do so. For now, I can't really leave that hotel, like that.' What I told him was not completely true. 'Before I say yes or no, I must let you know certain things about me. I have a fiancée already.’ He laughed shortly over the line again. 'I expect that. But it shouldn't stop our friendship, should it?' I sighed. 'I guess once we draw the lines and we know the boundary, it shouldn't.' 'Good, I'm happy to hear that. I'm happy to be your friend.' 'Okay, Tayo.' 'Yeah. Thanks again and goodnight.' 'Goodnight.' The following day, about mid-day, I met a young man carrying a medium-sized Ghana-must-go bag in the lobby. 'Good afternoon, madam. Please I've come to see a lady by the name Madam Simi.' 'Any problem?' 'No, no problem. I was sent by my boss.' I was all curious. 'Who's your boss?' 'Mr. Tayo Balogun.' That must be the Tayo that had his birthday in the hotel the previous day. 'I'm Simi,' I informed him. He broke into a smile. 'He said I should hand over this to you,' he said. Now, what could this be? What could be inside the bag? 'This way, please.' I preceded him to my office. 'And what is in the bag?' I asked as soon as we entered my office. 'I don't know,' he answed. I nodded. 'You have to open it and bring the contents out.' He became indecisive. 'They're for you, ma'am,' he said. 'Yes, that's what you said. All the same, I want you to bring the things inside out.' The guy opened the zip of the bag. The first items he brought out were two pairs of shoes. Next, he brought a pink evening dress, three female shirts, a small metal box containing jewelry, a packet of Cartier watch and two bottles of exotic female perfume. All the items were brand new. I was surprised by what I saw. Didn't I tell Tayo that I already had a serious relationship with somebody? Why did he go to the extent of buying all these? What did he aim to achieve? 'Alright, please return them inside the bag.' While the guy was doing this, I brought out my phone and called Tayo. 'Why did you buy all those things you bought?' I asked him as soon as he picked the call. He laughed across the line. 'I just felt like giving them to you,' he said. 'After all, you're my friend.' 'You shouldn't have bothered,' I told him. 'It's not a bother,' he replied. 'A princess like you deserves all the good things she can get.' 'Anyway, thank you so much. I appreciate your gesture.' 'You're welcome, dear Simi.' The line was cut. The guy had finished returning the items to the bag and had zipped it up. 'Okay, thank you,' I told him. 'Please say a big thank you to him on my behalf.' 'Okay.' He nodded and left the office. I sighed to myself, wondering what Tayo was trying to prove. I would not reject his gifts, but I would not give in to his implicit interest. Later that evening, Mola sent his driver to bring me to his house. I noticed that his children were even friendlier, especially, Maryam, the girl. 'Daddy said he's going to marry you,' the girl said. 'Is it true?' I smiled briefly. 'Yes, that's the plan.' 'That means you'll be my step mummy?' 'Yes, if God wishes it.' The girl gave me a hug. The following evening, when Tina came to spend the night in my room, she was surprised that another guy was seriously showing interest in me. 'He bought all these?' she exclaimed as she went through the items Tayo had given me. 'Yes, he did.' 'Hmn, I love the scent of this perfume.' She sniffed the scent of the Nina Ricci perfume. 'You can have one of them,' I said. 'And these shoes are fine.' She put on one of the pairs of shoes. 'It's actually my size.' I nodded. 'You can have that one too.' At the end of the day, Tina took about half of the items. I didn't mind sharing them with her. 'Make sure you get the best from him,' she said. 'The best is yet to come.' I grinned but didn't say a t thing. There was no point I argue with her, but I knew I would not exploit Tayo or any other man. I'll bear everything.'
