That Saturday, I would be doing morning shift which would end by two p.m. Then, I would have the rest of the day for myself.

‘I’ll come and pick you,’ he said. ‘What time should I come?’

‘Come by four in the afternoon.’

He nodded. ‘I’ll be there.’

On Saturday afternoon, by three, I was already ready for him. I wore jeans trousers and t-shirt and looked modest. I waited for him at the lobby of the hotel and by quarter to four o’clock, he was around.

‘Wow, you look more beautiful than ever,’ he said, smiling boyishly.

‘Thanks for the compliments.’

‘This way, please.’ He preceded me to the car park. His car was a low-slung jaguar XK. Like a gentleman, he opened the door for me.

His house, surprisingly, was on the same street with Tina’s residence. The difference was it was a mansion that was completely private.

I could see that his parents were very rich the moment he drove inside the compound. There was a long canopy that protected many luxury cars. The building was grand and the whole environment looked lush.

‘Welcome to my humble home,’ he said, smiling. I knew it was an irony, but I wondered if that statement was necessary. We went to the large sitting-room that had what looked like Italian furniture. Everything looked exotic.

‘Sit down, princess,’ he said. ‘Henceforth, you’re my princess.’

I smiled without saying a word.

‘Excuse me.’

I was left alone in the room. A couple of minutes later, a house maid walked to me.

‘Good evening, madam. Please, what can I offer you?’ she asked.

'Any drinks that does not have alcohol,' I answered. She nodded, left and within a minute was back with a tray containing a cold bottle of red wine and a glass.

'Thank you,' I mumbled. Tayo soon appeared.

'Esther, get me a glass cup too,' he told the maid.

'Yes, sir.'

He came to sit by my side, opened the bottle of wine and poured the drinks for me. The maid brought his glass cup and he filled it up.

We clinked the glasses with a smile permanently dancing on his face.

'I will ask you to tell me more about yourself, but before then, let me set the ball rolling.'

So, he gave me the details about himself. I was all ears.

'Presently,' he concluded. 'I work in one of my father's companies as Accounts Manager. I ought to have moved to my own house, and I will soon do so. However, I don't want to live there all alone, so I need to marry. I want you to join me there.'

My mind was busy. I realized that my relationship with him was just friendship. Now tha Mola was no longer in the picture, why not give Tayo a chance?

I now had all evenings to myself as Manu did not have the need for him to take me to Mola again. Tina still came occasionally. However, the incident of Mola changed some of my thinking.

'Two senators from Abuja are cooling off in Lagos, this weekend,' she announced. 'They need company.'

I shook my head. How long would Tina keep indulging in 'runs'?

'I'm not interested,' I butted in.

'Hey, don't let Malo's matter ruined your happiness. He is gone and he's gone forever. You have your own life to lead. You must not allow him
to weigh you down. Move on with your life.'

'I'm moving on with life,' I argued.

'Good. So, let's meet with these distinguished gentlemen. It's Nigerian money they want to spend. Let's eat our national cake through them.'

Whether it was national cake or international cake, I had made up my mind that I would be content with what I earned legitimately,
henceforth. I knew the kind of background I had and the kind of person I had grown to be. Despite my beauty and the continuous attention I
got from men, I had never allowed myself to get carried away.

‘Tina, I’m not going,’ I said. ‘As a matter of fact, I will advise that you stick to a man and stop these ‘runs’ of a thing.’

She looked bemused. ‘Now, wait a minute. Don’t tell me you have become a ‘born again’ overnight. I don’t understand this your preaching at
all.’

‘I’m not preaching,’ I returned. ‘But I honestly believe we should not live a reckless life. With the income we earn legitimately, we should be
okay. There’s no need for all these exploits.’

‘Hey, it’s not just for the money. It’s for the fun of it.’

I shook my head. ‘I want no such fun again.’

‘Alright, Miss Righteous. Do as you wish.’

She let me be and it was such a relief. Tayo did not give up on his desire. I must admit that he had a lot of doggedness.

‘I don’t want to be one of your numerous ladies,’ I told him. ‘Since you have many of them at your beck and call, I think it will do you well to
leave me out of it.’

‘Those ones you saw fawning over me during my birthday celebration were just seeking attention. I don’t have for them the kind of feeling I
have for you. It’s you I love, Simi.’

I chuckled. ‘People always talk about love, yet they hardly understand what it truly means.’

‘So, give me that chance to show you. I will show you what love is.’ Then, he looked at me curiously. ‘I don’t even know where you live. Can I
pay you a visit at your home?’

I sighed. ‘I think it’s better you don’t. I live in the same house with my employer for now, and she may not like the idea.’

He did not give up. ‘What about me taking you to know my place? Let me take you home.’

I considered this briefly and decided to concede.

‘Alright. Maybe this Saturday.’

He grinned happily. ‘That’s good, my dear Simi.’

That Saturday, I would be doing morning shift which would end by two p.m. Then, I would have the rest of the day for myself.

A week after Mola's incident, Tayo came to my office.

'You did not see me and did not care,' he started.

That was true. The events of the past days had made me to forget about him.

'I'm sorry,' I replied. 'I lost someone and have not been in the right frame of mind.'

'Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I've not been in the right frame of mind too. I had been sick in the last few days.'

'Sorry to hear that too. It's like it was a week of unpleasant things. So, how is your body now?'

'Well, I'm getting better.'

He was with me in my office for some time. I offered him drinks but he, as usual, he declined. Somehow, I did not disclose to him that the man I
had hoped to marry was dead. He affirmed his belief that I would be his wife, but I tactfully refused to comment on that.

He nodded again. 'Let me start by saying that there are certain dreams I have that are very significant. The moment I wake up, I always realize such dreams as unique. Now, yesterday night, I had a very significant dream. I had a dream that you're my wife.'

I stared at him for some seconds before I burst out laughing.

He looked on solemnly, ignoring my poker.

'Seriously? What a dream! How could you believe that?'

'It will come to pass,' he said. 'Such a remarkable dream always comes to pass.'

I wanted to laugh again, but stopped myself. I certainly wouldn't want to hurt him by my action. But, seriously, he was a dreamer, wasn't he?

'I'm sorry, I don't believe you,' I returned. 'That dream of yours is certainly not going to happen. No, no, no, I don't think so. You know I'm
already in a serious relationship.'

'A unique dream like this always comes to pass,' he repeated.

'Oh, come on Tayo, wake up from your dreams.'

He smiled and looked on determinedly. 'Just before I had this dream, I was thinking of coming to formally ask for your hand in marriage. But with
the dream, there's no need I do that. I know the unique dream is as good as reality. It's just a matter of time. I'll wait for you, honey.'

I became exasperated. 'Hey, Tayo, stop it. And don't call me that, please.'

He got to his feet, still smiling and still looking confident.

'I'll be going for now,' he announced.

I only waved at him and he was gone. Now, what kind of dream was that? How could he dream that I was his wife? I paused to think of its
possibility but decided it was not possible. I was not the kind that would gladly betray trust. Though I did not want Mola completely as husband,
I would not just renege on my words and embrace Tayo. Tayo was just a dreamer.

Mrs. Shitta spent four weeks in England before she returned. This time around, her husband, Doctor Olu Shitta, came home too. I could see that
she looked fresh and refreshed.

I gave her the details of the main events that had happened in her absence and the business reports. Mrs. Shitta was impressed with all I had
done.

'This is very impressive, Simi,' she said. 'You've really done well.'

Two days after she came back, she employed Akin, a man of about thirty-four years as Assistant Business Manager. That would relieve me of
some duties, and gave me room to have some relaxations. It would also mean Mola could now insist on our visiting Ibadan once he got to know
that I had an assistant.

Tina and I continued to be soul mates. We still had our secret dalliance, but of course it remained secret.

I had to make up my mind about taking Mola to Ibadan. I knew very soon, he would bring the matter up again, and I would have no option than
to take him to meet my mum.

This Friday, he said we would have to go to Ibadan.

'I need to act fast,' he said. 'I don't want any young chap to snatch you away from me.'

It was Wednesday. That meant we had two days to go. I decided I would tell Mrs. Shitta that I would take Friday off. I would tell her tomorrow,
Thursday.

Things went very well that Wednesday. I could see that Akin was learning fast and was keen about his job. That was good. It would make my
task easier.

About four p.m, I got a call from Tina.

'Hello, dear,' I greeted in my jovial self.

'Simi, something has happened.'

I caught my breath. Her tone and brusqueness certainly indicated that something was wrong.

'What is it?' I asked in a shaky tone.

'It's Mola.'

My heart beat increased. 'What happened to him?'

There was a long pause.

'What happened to him?' I repeated.

'He had a heart attack. We just rushed him to the hospital.'

'What! A heart attack? Oh, my God. Which hospital is he?'

'All Saints Hospital at 133 Awolowo Road, here in Ikoyi.'

'Okay. Thanks for telling me. I'll soon be there.'

I dropped the telephone. I suddenly realized that my hands were shaking. Oh, God, have mercy. I found myself muttering some prayers.

I sat down to calm myself down. I obviously had to go and see him and see how he was faring. I picked my bag. The money inside would be
enough to take me to Ikoyi and bring me back. Besides, I also had my ATM inside the bag, in case I needed to withdraw some money.

I locked my office and went to meet Akin.

'I'm going to Ikoyi to see somebody now. It's a kind of emergency.'

I took a cab to the hospital at Ikoyi. There, I met Manu, his driver at the reception hall of the big hospital. He stood up on seeing me and took
some uncertain steps towards me.

RomanceRe: Thrills Of A Lagos Babe by WuraSerano(op): 11:30am On Sep 20, 2020
The thing I told him was not completely true. I could travel to Ibadan in the morning and come back towards evening, but somehow, my mind was not fully in support of taking Mola home, yet. I had this restraint at the back of my mind that despite all his zeal and seemingly determination to take me as his wife, I was yet to be completely convinced that he was the man for me. Mola was nice, no doubt.

Besides, he was very generous. I could not even think of the man that would finally be the one, but it was just that a cloud of uncertainty was cast upon Mola.

About three weeks after Mrs. Shitta traveled to England, we continued to communicate by telephone. She would ask about how business was going, and I would give her summary of the reports. Her absence, just like Tina said, was a chance for me to play a smart one and make some money for myself, but I would not do that. I had made up my mind to do the work dedicatedly and honestly. Tina teased that I was yet to learn the tricks, but I answered that I was okay with what I was earning legitimately.

If I thought Tayo was content with friendship, then I was making a big mistake. On a cool, early Thursday evening, he came to my office. I was doing some calculations when he gently rapped at the door, opened it a bit and peered inside.

'Good evening, Simi,' he greeted.

I looked up from my calculations and smiled at him. 'Good evening, Tayo, how're you?'

Now he came in with his easy smile.

'Sit down,' I offered. 'You're a bit early today.'

'Yes. I hope you're not very busy.'

'Not exactly, but let me finish these calculations.'

He grinned. 'Okay.'

He sat quietly while I finished the task.

'So, what can I offer you, Tayo?' I asked.

Slowly, he shook his head. 'Nothing. I'm actually here to give you a message.'

I looked up at him sharply. 'Now, what message could that be?'

He nodded knowingly. 'I want you to be through with what you're doing first.'

'Okay o.'

Another couple of minutes, I was through. 'Yes, I'm all ears now.'

With my good income and steady flow of other perks, I decided to call mummy and surprise her.

'Hello, mum, how's everything in Ibadan?'

'Things are fine here. What about there in Lagos?'

'Things are quite good,' I answered. 'Ehn, ehn, mummy, I want you to get a painter to paint that house. I believe it' high time we gave the place
a face-lift. Let the painter do the estimate and let me know the costs. I'll bear everything.'

'Oh, that's my daughter,' she said. 'You're the true daughter of your father.'

I also decided to be sending some money to Deola to augment what mummy was giving her.

A week after I first met Tayo, he came to my office late in the afternoon.

'I've come to greet you and see your face,' he said.

I smiled at him. 'What's so special about my face?'

'Ah, you may not know it, but everything about you is bewitching.'

'There are more ladies that even more beautiful,' I pointed out.

'You're beautiful inside and outside,' he went on. 'None has the kind of quality you have.'

'Thanks for the compliments. But I believe if you really look well enough, you will find those that have the quality you talked about. Simi is probably just one of them.'

He shook his head vehemently. 'No, you're not one of them. You're special. You're above others.'

'Oh, enough of your flatters. What can I offer you?'

He grinned. 'Hearing your sweet words is good enough for me.' Despite his answer, I asked one of the staffers to give him bottled water. We
chatted for some time before he finally indicated his departure.

'You've made my day,' he said. 'Thanks for your time and attention.'

'You're welcome,' I told him. Later that night when I was in Mola's house, he said he would need to know my parents.

'My father's dead, while my mother is well alive,' I said.

'Tell me about them,' he prompted.

I told him how loving and compassionate my daddy was to his children and his wife before he met untimely death in a road accident. I also told
him about my mother, now a matron at University College Hospital in Ibadan. Mola seemed to be interested in my tales.

'I'll need to know my future mother-in-law on time,' he said. 'Can't you set a weekend aside, even one day, that we can travel to Ibadan to see
her?'

I nodded. 'But it has to be when my boss and employer, Mrs. Shitta comes back from her U.K trip. She said she would employ an assistant
manager, but she's yet to do so. For now, I can't really leave that hotel, like that.'

What I told him was not completely true. I could travel to Ibadan in the morning and come back towards evening, but somehow, my mind was not

'Before I say yes or no, I must let you know certain things about me. I have a fiancée already.’

He laughed shortly over the line again. 'I expect that. But it shouldn't stop our friendship, should it?'

I sighed. 'I guess once we draw the lines and we know the boundary, it shouldn't.'

'Good, I'm happy to hear that. I'm happy to be your friend.'

'Okay, Tayo.'

'Yeah. Thanks again and goodnight.'

'Goodnight.'

The following day, about mid-day, I met a young man carrying a medium-sized Ghana-must-go bag in the lobby.

'Good afternoon, madam. Please I've come to see a lady by the name Madam Simi.'

'Any problem?'

'No, no problem. I was sent by my boss.'

I was all curious. 'Who's your boss?'

'Mr. Tayo Balogun.'

That must be the Tayo that had his birthday in the hotel the previous day.

'I'm Simi,' I informed him.

He broke into a smile. 'He said I should hand over this to you,' he said.

Now, what could this be? What could be inside the bag?

'This way, please.' I preceded him to my office.

'And what is in the bag?' I asked as soon as we entered my office.

'I don't know,' he answed.

I nodded. 'You have to open it and bring the contents out.'

He became indecisive. 'They're for you, ma'am,' he said.

'Yes, that's what you said. All the same, I want you to bring the things inside out.'

The guy opened the zip of the bag. The first items he brought out were two pairs of shoes. Next, he brought a pink evening dress, three female
shirts, a small metal box containing jewelry, a packet of Cartier watch and two bottles of exotic female perfume. All the items were brand new.

I was surprised by what I saw. Didn't I tell Tayo that I already had a serious relationship with somebody? Why did he go to the extent of buying
all these? What did he aim to achieve?

'Alright, please return them inside the bag.'

While the guy was doing this, I brought out my phone and called Tayo.

'Why did you buy all those things you bought?' I asked him as soon as he picked the call.

He laughed across the line. 'I just felt like giving them to you,' he said. 'After all, you're my friend.'

'You shouldn't have bothered,' I told him.

'It's not a bother,' he replied. 'A princess like you deserves all the good things she can get.'

'Anyway, thank you so much. I appreciate your gesture.'

'You're welcome, dear Simi.'

The line was cut. The guy had finished returning the items to the bag and had zipped it up.

'Okay, thank you,' I told him. 'Please say a big thank you to him on my behalf.'

'Okay.' He nodded and left the office. I sighed to myself, wondering what Tayo was trying to prove. I would not reject his gifts, but I would not give in to his implicit interest.

Later that evening, Mola sent his driver to bring me to his house. I noticed that his children were even friendlier, especially, Maryam, the girl.

'Daddy said he's going to marry you,' the girl said. 'Is it true?'

I smiled briefly. 'Yes, that's the plan.'

'That means you'll be my step mummy?'

'Yes, if God wishes it.'

The girl gave me a hug.

The following evening, when Tina came to spend the night in my room, she was surprised that another guy was seriously showing interest in me.

'He bought all these?' she exclaimed as she went through the items Tayo had given me.

'Yes, he did.'

'Hmn, I love the scent of this perfume.' She sniffed the scent of the Nina Ricci perfume.

'You can have one of them,' I said.

'And these shoes are fine.' She put on one of the pairs of shoes. 'It's actually my size.'

I nodded. 'You can have that one too.'

At the end of the day, Tina took about half of the items. I didn't mind sharing them with her.

'Make sure you get the best from him,' she said. 'The best is yet to come.'

I grinned but didn't say a t thing. There was no point I argue with her, but I knew I would not exploit Tayo or any other man.

With my good income and steady flow of other perks, I decided to call mummy and surprise her.

We said few more things and hanged up. On Monday morning, I was with Mrs. Shitta as early as six a.m. She would be traveling to England that day.

'Make sure things go on well, Simi,' she said. 'I'm really counting on you that all will be well.'

'No problem, ma,' I reassured. 'All will be well.' Bimpe moved her luggage downstairs to the boot of the car. Gideon was handy to drive while Bimpe would accompany her to the airport. I waved her bye, and wished her a fare well.

By eight that morning, I was in the hotel to start the day's work. About mid-day, I received a customer who came to book the banquet hall.

'I'm celebrating my birthday and I'm inviting friends over,' he said.

'You're welcome.' I went on to give him the costs of the hall.

'We'll be having a buffet,' he added.

'Like how many guests are you expecting?' I asked.

He did some thinking. 'Like fifty guests,' he said.

Fifty guests just to celebrate birthday! I grinned, nodded and told him the costs.

'There's no problem,' he said.

'Give me the accounts details so that I can make the money transfer.'

I told him.

'You can pay seventy per cent of the money as deposit. Then, you'll pay the balance once you finish using the place. But you'll have to pay the
whole money for the buffet.'

'I'll pay for everything upfront,' he said importantly.

Spoilt son of a wealthy man, I thought.

'What name do I write on the receipt?' I asked.

'Write Tayo.'

I wrote on the receipt.

'You have such a beautiful handwriting,' he commented.

'Thank you.' I handed the receipt to him.

'You've not told me your name,' he said, smiling.

I tried a smile too. 'Simi.'

His smile became expansive. 'It's good to meet a very beautiful one like you.'

'Thank you.' I didn't know what else to say.

As soon as he left, I swung into action. The hall had to be arranged and decorated while the cooking of the meal must begin in earnest.

The party did not start until five, but by then everything was set.

'Come and join us at the party,' Tayo came to tell me.

I shook my head. 'I'm sorry I'm at work.'

'Ah, the lady at work,' he said. He seemed to be friendly, but I shouldn't encourage him to step out of bond. He later sent a lady to bring my own
food and drinks.

'Tell him a big thank you on my behalf,' I told the lady.

The birthday party didn't end until ten o'clock. From the arrays of cars that his guests brought, it was undoubted the fact that he was from the
very rich class.

Tayo was in my office again. 'I want to say a big thank you for hosting us,' he said with his grin. From my observations, so far, he was a likeable
fellow. He was neither brash nor overbearing.

'Can I have your number?' he asked politely.

I gave him the number.

'I'll call you. Don't forget the name is Tayo.'

About an hour later, when I was on my way to the residential building, Tayo called.

'Hello, this is Tayo,' he started.

'Hello, Tayo.'

'I hope I'm not disturbing anything.'

I grinned to myself. 'No, you're not.'

'I want to make a request.'

'Hmn, what kind of request?'

'It's a friend request. I want us to be friends.'

I smiled. I wasn't expecting something else.

She studied my face briefly. 'Wait a minute, don't tell me you're waiting for that Ibadan guy to make a come-back.'

Daniel? No way. He was not even on my mind. I chuckled.

'Listen,' Tina said. 'A lady doesn't need to marry who she loves. She should marry the guy who loves her. That is the important thing: the guy
who loves her and can take good care of her.'

I nodded. She had a point there.

'But what if he's a flirt who jumps from one woman to another?' I asked.

'You're not to think so negatively. Believe he is the one and all is well.'

Later in my room, we discussed more about men.

'You've not told me who you want to settle down with and marry,' I said.

She regarded me briefly and smiled.

'About three men are on my waiting list, right now, I've ' not told any of them yes because they don't seem to have enough financial muscle to
satisfy my needs. As soon as I get somebody with Mola's kind of resources, my resounding answer will be yes.'

I sighed. What else could I say?

Tina slept over and only left early the following morning for her place of work. About mid-day, Mola called to inform me again that the driver would be coming to pick me.

But, it was just yesterday that I went to his house. It was obvious he wanted to be making my coming very regular. No problem. I was there
about the time I got there during my first visit to the house. He hugged me like he had not seen me for weeks.

'Hello, baby. Very good to see you.'

'Hello, darling,' I answered.

He kissed me softly on the lips.

'What will you have for dinner?' he asked.

I grinned and shook my head. 'Sorry, nothing.'

'Okay, let's go upstairs then.' He held me by the hand led me to the staircase and to his room upstairs. When we got there, he brought out a big Ghana-must-go bag from his wardrobe and opened it. It was filled with different lace, guinea brocade and ankara fabrics - all in bundles.

'When we marry,' he said. 'You'll not be wearing only English wears alone. You'll also be wearing things like these. They're for you.'

'Oh, how magnanimous of you,' I gushed and went on to give him a bear hug.

'Are you ready to give me your answer now?' he asked some minutes later.

I smiled. He had put me in a tight corner, hadn't he?

'Okay,' I said. 'My answer is yes.'

'That's my lady,' he enthused, hugged me and briefly held my waist to lift me up. He genuinely looked pleased with my answer.

'Now, let me UnCloth my love and make passionate love to her.'

I obliged him all he wanted. The following day was Saturday. I didn't have to wake up at five in the morning to start preparing for office. We were
still in bed till six-thirty. He woke me up with kisses.

'Morning, darling,' I greeted.

'Good morning, sweet heart,' he replied.

I went to the bathroom to have a good bath.

'The driver will take you back,' he said as I was creaming my body. 'And please, don't forget to take your bag of clothes along.'

I smiled. 'Yes, love.' Of course, I would not forget the bag. How could I?

I kissed him good bye. He had to call Manu to carry the bag to the boot of the car. When we got to Berger, I asked Manu not to park in front of
the hotel but take the side drive to my residence. He helped in bringing the bag to my room.

I quickly fished out a thousand naira note from my purse.

'Here, have this.'

'Ah, thank you, madam,' he answered and drove off. I had not time yet to examine the clothes one after the other. I would do that another time.

Quickly, I changed my dress and locked my room. Mola's car gift, now my car, remained at the spot where I had parked it in the residential
compound. I was not in a hurry to be cruising in it. I was not always crazy about cars. Even in Ibadan, mummy said I should be using one of the three cars left behind by daddy. Specifically,
she said I should take the Honda Accord. Believe me, Deola used that car more than I did.

I sighed and went to the hotel. It was another busy weekend. Tina did not come around, as she had said she would be with one of her lovers.
We however spoke at length on the telephone.

'Hey, take it easy o,' I said.

'I can take care of myself,' she answered. I went on to tell her I had agreed to Mola's proposition.

'Ah, that's good,' she replied. 'And in case you get a better proposition, then you go for the better option.'

'What? I can't do that!'

She laughed over the line. 'Why not? Make the best from men, Simi, dear. That's what a beautiful lady like you should do.'

I shook my head. 'Except Mola changes his mind, I can't just accept marriage proposition from any other man again.'

'Na him be say Mola's love don dey shark you. Na wa o.'

'I'll like to be faithful to a cause,' I explained.

There was another short laugh from her. 'Okay o, madam faithfulness. Congrats, all the same. Mola is a big catch.'

We said few more things and hanged up. On Monday morning, I was with Mrs. Shitta as early as six a.m. She would be traveling to England that
day.

'Make sure things go on well, Simi,' she said. 'I'm really counting on you that all will be well.'

'No problem, ma,' I reassured. 'All will be well.' Bimpe moved her luggage downstairs to the boot of the car. Gideon was handy to drive while Bimpe
would accompany her to the airport. I waved her bye, and wished her a farewell.

He opened his eyes wide and stared at me. 'What?'

'You called me Nike some seconds ago. Who's she to you?'

'I did? Sorry about that. That was the name of my deceased wife.'

I stared at him briefly, the anger oozing out of me.

He sat up on the bed.

My dressing was complete and I was set to go.

‘Sorry, you have to go by cab,’ he said. ‘I didn’t remember to tell the driver to come around early.’

I grinned. ‘Oh, that’s okay.’

He opened his wardrobe and brought a wallet out. The wallet was already unzipped and I could see wads of currency notes inside. He placed it
on the stool by the bedside.

‘Take the amount that you need,’ he said, leaving the bedroom for the attached toilet.

That was like being given a blank cheque. Ah, Mola was tempting me o. But then, I decided I would not be greedy, so I removed only five
thousand naira from the lot. He soon came back from the toilet. He accompanied me downstairs.

'Moyo!' he called out.

'Sir!' an answer came from one of the rooms.

The girl that opened the main door for me yesterday soon came out.

'Good morning, sir.'

'Good morning, Moyo. You're to accompany aunty to the bus stop where she could take a cab.'

'Yes, sir.'

He waved bye to me. The bus stop was just a few minutes' walk from his residence. I thanked Moyo as I flagged down a cab and mentioned
where I was going. We briefly haggled over how much to pay and finally agreed on something reasonable. Right there in the cab, I thought over
Mola's marriage proposition. According to him, he was forty-four. That meant there was seventeen years' difference between us. Seventeen
years!

I wondered if I should say yes to him. I knew comfort was guaranteed, but marriage was more than that. I would prefer a younger, much younger, man.

By eight, I had entered my office and was settling down. His call came.

'Hello, darling, hope you got there safely.'

'Yes, I did. Thanks for your concern.'

'You will always be my concern now.'

I grinned. 'Thanks,' I repeated.'

Later that evening, Tina was around. She had said I should be visiting her in her place, but because of my busy schedule, I could not be going
there.

'Tina, dear, how're you?' I greeted.

She smiled. 'I feel good. You know what, sweetie? You're looking more and more gorgeous everyday.'

'Thank you. You are looking good too.'

I could not even wait till we got to my room before I started giving her the latest gist.

'Mola has proposed marriage to me,' I said.

Tina was wide-eyed in surprise. 'Really?'

'Yes, he told me last night.'

Tina became exuberant. 'Well, congratulations! When is the wedding?'

'Hey, not so fast,' I cautioned. 'I'm yet to say yes to him.'

Again, she looked surprised. 'What are you waiting for? Tell him yes.'

'But he's about seventeen years older,' I pointed out.

'So what? Are men not supposed to be older than their wives?'

'But, I'm yet to learn so much about him. How could I be sure that we're compatible and we're made for each other?'

'Of course, you're made for each other. You've been going out for several weeks together, now. If you were not compatible, the relationship
would have ended long before now.'

She studied my face briefly. 'Wait a minute, don't tell me you're waiting for that Ibadan guy to make a come-back.'

Daniel? No way. He was not even on my mind. I chuckled.

He eyed me with interest as I wore my skimpy and sexy night wear.

'I know you must have missed me terribly and you're gearing for the real action,' I teased him.

'I missed you,' he agreed, ‘but I’m not angling for any action.'

'Really?' I wriggled my waist and seductively shook my breasts. 'Are you sure about that?'

'I'm sure,' he asserted. 'I didn't bring you for sex, Simi.'

I stopped to stare at him. 'Really? So, what did you bring me for?'

He looked solemnly at me. 'Simi, I have seen in you great qualities. You are indeed an embodiment of beauty and brain. Will you marry me?'

I froze. There would have been complete silence for several seconds, except for the noise from the split air-conditioning system.

I finally recovered from the shock. 'No, no, no, Mola. Tell me this is a joke.'

He chuckled. 'No, it's not. I really want to marry you, Simi.'

'No, you can't be serious. You're joking.'

'I'm forty-four years old, my dear. Why would I be joking on this kind of thing?'

I looked away from him, not knowing what else to say.

He was staring at me. 'I know you'll be a good companion and wife. I have no doubt about that.'

I still wanted to put on an air of indifference, but my mind cautioned me. Come on, don't be such a wet blanket, my mind said. No man had ever
expressed so much zeal about future companionship like this before, not even Daniel with all his gra gra.

I suddenly smiled. 'First and foremost, let me appreciate you for deeming me worthy of being a life partner. But this is a very serious matter. It's
a life-long thing. Give me some time to think over it.'

He smiled. 'I understand you perfectly and completely agree with you.'

'Alright, let's go to bed, darling. I've got to wake up early tomorrow morning.'

I climbed on the bed and snuggled up to him. He used his right hand to wrap my shoulders and to hold me so lovingly. I rubbed his chest and was
surprised he made no further move.

'Well, aren't you going to swing into action?' I asked him.

A big smile played on his face. 'I'm not going to touch you until I hear your answer.'

That answer was another big surprise. 'Really? Are you sure about that?'

He smiled kindly. 'Of course. Right now, I'm happy to have you in my arms. I'm happy to have your companionship.'

I grinned to myself. It was good to hear that. It was good to know that the essence of my coming was just to keep him company.

We soon slept off. I woke up on time to start preparing for work. He was still lazing on the bed when I was through with my dressing. I tapped
him on the shoulder.

'Good morning, darling.'

'Good morning, Nike,' he answered.

I was instantly on the offensive.

'Who's Nike?'

He opened his eyes wide and stared at me. 'What?'

He was almost shocked that she remembered his real name. He wanted to remind her to remind him of her name, but decided against it.

‘Let me have your number,’ she said. She stored his number and dialed it. ‘That’s my number,’ she put in.

To help him out of what to store the owner’s name as, she said: ‘Just simply save it as E.K.’
He smiled and nodded. If he could not remember the full name, surely, he should remember this.
He drove her to the main road and waved her off.

* * *

Jide and Yeni had woken up by five in the morning. He had to assure and reassure her that his love for her remained constant and unshaken.

There was no other woman who would take his love for her away, he insisted. Yeni didn’t know whether to believe him or not.

He had admitted that he sometimes went to the club or any other relation place to unwind after the tedious office hours. Why not come home to relax? She had asked innocently. Wasn’t he prone to falling for the temptation and seduction of these young ladies around?

Jide had laughed it off. He did that to create the impression that he was a man above such passion. He only went there to take few drinks with friends, he had argued. Just a couple of hours or so was all that he took.

Later, as he dressed up for work, he was still making promises. ‘You have nothing to worry about,’ he said for the umpteenth time as he tied the lace of his shoes. He looked dashing in his three-button suit.

He was certainly a good-looking guy. Yeni’s heart sank when she imagined that many ladies would him handsome, attractive and desirable. With his looks and status, surely he was a hot cake to many ladies.

Another inner voice told her that she was selfish. Must she only believe in herself without giving person a chance? She was beautiful and desirable too, by all standards. Would it not be preposterous of him to think that she had another lover outside?

No, she must not be too wrapped up in her own sentiment. Don’t be mawkish, she cautioned herself.

She followed him downstairs to the dining-table where he had some cups of coffee. Yeni was playing the adoring wifey.

‘Nike’s birthday is this Saturday, right?’ he asked as a way of changing the topic.

‘Yes. And it’s going to be groovy.’

‘I should think of something befitting for her,’ he said, half to himself. ‘I think she deserves something nice.’

Yeni agreed. ‘Yes. She’ll surely appreciate that.’
He sighed, lifted his briefcase and placed it on the dinning-table. Then, he snapped the locks open and brought out his cheque book. With a flourish, he signed a blank cheque and handed it to her.

‘What’s this?’ she asked, looking surprised.

‘For you. Cash any amount you desire, so long as it’s not more than six figures.’

‘Are we celebrating anything?’

‘No. I just want you to have a good time with some good things you may want. After all, your wish is my command. He smiled again.

‘I don’t know what to say,’ she said, staring at the cheque.

‘You don’t have to say anything.’

‘Oh, you’re such a darling,’ she gushed and came to give her a hug.

They kissed briefly and he was ready to go. Just then, mama came in. there were exchange of pleasantries and mama looked at the couple curiously.

‘I’m on my way, mummy,’ he told his mother and gave her bye peck.

As soon as he was gone, Yeni returned to the bedroom, still not entirely sure about him and his intents and actions. It would be very wrong if he thought he could use money to replace the undivided attention she desired from him.

Isn’t there that saying that money cannot buy love? Was Jide aware of this, or didn’t he believe in it?

Was he thinking he could use money to pacify her and make her be tolerant of his laxities? Could the money make her become less possessive and more permissive? If those were her thoughts, then he was in for a hell of shock.

She would never allow money to take precedence over real love. Never!

It was not the first time Jide would be making such an offering. Indeed, as far as she could remember, this was the fourth time. She had such a sharp mind she could keep track of such things.

The first time was some weeks before their wedding. At that time, she had believed the gesture was purely out of love.

The second time was when she had her first miscarriage and had become so downcast. The third was on the occasion of her thirtieth birthday. That was about five months ago. That time too, she had no doubt in her mind that the motive was very genuine. Now, for the latest offering, it looked like a Greek gift.

She looked at the check again and wondered just how much she would write on it. But maybe she was just having misplaced misgivings about him and the whole thing. Enough of your negative thoughts, she chided herself.

Why not be positive minded? Perhaps, Jide was still totally for her and her suspicion was baseless.

She hadn’t caught him red-handed, anyway, and whatever fear she had now was not quite consequential. Maybe she the one imagining things. She shrugged her thoughts off and went to take her bath.

She was expecting Roli by ten o’clock that morning. Ever time-conscious, the latter arrived some minutes to the time she said she would come.

That meant he would have to wait for long. I asked him to wait at the lobby. I however ensured that he was served a pack of food and bottle water. Few minutes to nine, I was ready to go. I had my things ready in my bag as I went to meet Manu in the lobby.

‘Alright, let’s go,’ I said. After I had settled in the car, I asked the driver where Mola lived.

‘Ago palace way, Okota,’ he said.

It was quite a trip to move from Berger to Okota, but for a man like Mola, I would do it. It was few minutes to ten when the car stopped at the gate of his beautiful duplex, off Ago palace Way. Manu honked the horn and waited. A young man, obviously the security guy, came to briefly
gaze at the car. He went back inside the compound and soon threw the giant gates open. The car was driven inside.

Manu preceded me out of it to the main building. A girl with a shy smile welcomed me to the main living-room. There was a small welcome party waiting for me. As soon as I stepped inside the large, exquisitely furnished sitting-room, Mola and two kids - I guessed they were his offspring - stood up to give a welcome.

'You're welcome,' Mola said. 'And we - Kola and Maryam - are delighted to welcome you.'

I was awed. 'Good evening, sir,' I greeted. 'How are you Kola and Maryam?'

'Fine,' they answered. I briefly studied the children. Kola, the boy, should be about twelve years old while his sister should be about ten. They
looked well-groomed and lovely. I should hands with Kola while I hugged Maryam.

'That is Aunty Simi,' Mola said further. 'I asked them to wait until you come.' He said it as if he was referring to the Princess of Wales. I was
bemused by the whole scene.

'Okay, children,' Mola said. 'You can go to bed now.'

'Good night, Aunty Simi,’ they said one after the other.

'Good night, children.'

I turned to face him the moment the children were out of sight. 'What was that?'

He smiled. 'It's our way of welcoming you to the house.'

I grinned. I suspected there was more to this, but I would play along.

'Do you want anything for dinner?' he asked.

I shook my head. 'Oh, no, I've eaten.'

'Let me take you to my bedroom, then.'

I picked up my handbag and followed him to the bedroom. It was a very large and comfortable room with king-size bed. He was already in
pajamas, so I was the one to change clothes.

He eyed me with interest as I wore my skimpy and sexy night wear.

'I know you must have missed me terribly and you're gearing for the real action,' I teased him.

She came to sit on his lap. He touched her neck and caressed her back. She giggled and responded with moans. She wasn’t as drunk as being totally out of control but the stupor was enough to get her to do anything crazy.

‘Why are you going out with a no-good-girl like Joyce? She asked, looking serious. His mind was blank for a moment.

‘Joyce? Yeah, Joyce. She was introduced to me by a friend.’

‘She’s no good. How can a decent man like you go out with her?’

He chuckled. Decent man indeed! ‘What’s wrong with her?’

She scoffed at the question. ‘Joyce? You don’t know anything about her. She’ll only skin you out of your money and dump you.’

Biyi could not suppress the laughter. How ridiculous for a girl to tell him that another girl could use and dump him! It was preposterous but he laughed over it. Let her shoot her mouth as much as she wanted, he thought in amusement.

‘Is that all to it?’

She gazed at him intently as if seeing him for the first time. ‘Is that not enough? What do you want with a girl like that?’

He grinned and nodded.

‘I’m going to prove a worthier companion,’ she went on. ‘Trust me.’

He gave her a kiss and she clung onto him.

‘I know you’re the guy for me the moment I saw you,’ she mumbled.

The grin was now permanently etched on his face. He told her she was right. It made sense, somehow. Of course, he was the right guy for her.

They kissed again and he watched her unbutton his shirt and unzip his fly. Easy, easy, he muttered as he guided her on.

There wasn’t going to be any queer demand tonight. Just as she was, there the urgent need to satisfy desires of lust. He helped her remove her own dress, which wasn’t much anyway. After that, there was a blackout.

They didn’t wake up on Wednesday morning until few minutes to nine. She was the first to be fully awake. She had to drag herself out of bed. She felt headache and a kind of dullness she had not felt in ages. She was aghast when she realized what time of the day it was.

‘Hey, wake up,’ she told her companion.

Biyi grunted and opened his eyes.

‘Goodness,’ she exclaimed. ‘I’ll miss my first lecture.’

He stared at her blankly as if trying to place her.
‘Where’s the toilet and the bathroom?’

He directed her, turned on his back and closed his eyes. In his life, he had never come across sexually crazy girl like this. He tried to remember her name. It was something that sounded like Okata or whatever. He gave up.

Fifteen minutes later, she returned, already dressed up and ready to go. She tapped him on the shoulder.

‘Are you going to sleep all day long?’

He rubbed his eyes and sat up on the bed. ‘You’re going now?’ He couldn’t find any other thing to say.

‘Of course. I have lectures to attend. Besides, I have a test I’ll be writing by eleven this morning.’
He walked in nude to the wardrobe, opened it, yawned noisily and wore a pair of jeans and a tee shirt.

‘When do we see again?’ she asked. Her question was like a bash in the head. What made her imagine that he wanted to see her again? Did he? He grinned at himself. Yeas, he would.

‘I’ll come on weekend to pick you,’ he said.

‘Friday or Saturday?’

‘Friday,’ he replied without a second thought. ‘Same time I go around there yesterday.’ He yawned again and brought out a wad of naira notes.

‘Use these for your trouble.’

Troubles? What troubles? It had been a pleasure, hadn’t it?

She smiled delightedly. ‘Thanks, Biyi.’

He was almost shocked that she remembered his real name. He wanted to remind her to remind him of her name, but decided against it.

The following day went smoothly. About seven p.m., Andy came to my office again.

‘Hello, Simi, darling. Will you be able to make it tonight?’

I decided I had to tell him some home truths. ‘No. Not tonight, not forever.’

He seemed not to be so surprised by my declaration. Rather, he appeared to muse over it.

‘Is that your final decision?’

‘Yes.’

He appeared to muse briefly again. He suddenly shook his head and smiled. ‘This is wonderful. I never knew there’re still ladies like you in Nigeria.
You deserve the money I’ve given you for your faithfulness. That hubby of yours is damn so lucky.’

I grinned at him in return. ‘Thanks for your compliments,’ I muttered.

He nodded at me and left my office. From that moment till he checked out of the hotel the following morning, he didn’t disturb me again. Hmn!
Mola returned to Lagos many hours after Andy left Comely Hotel.

‘I’m back,’ he said, like somebody making declaration of triumphant entry.

‘You’re welcome, great one,’ I said, trying to match his tone. He laughed over the line.

‘But really, Simi, I missed you so much,’ he said.

I laughed too. Who didn’t like to be missed? ‘I miss you too,’ I cooed.

‘So, tonight, I’ll send the driver to come and convey you.’

‘That will be no problem,’ I said.

‘There’s one thing.’

‘What’s that?’

There was a few seconds pause.

‘The driver will not take you to that hotel. He will bring you straight to my house.’

I caught my breath. ‘What?’

‘Yes. I want you to know my home.’

‘But… but, what about your wife?’

He laughed over the line briefly again. ‘There’s nothing like wife.’ His tone became sober. ‘I lost my wife in a car crash early last year.’

‘Oh.’ I was surprised to hear that. ‘Sorry about that.’

‘It’s okay. Thanks.’

There was another brief pause. ‘So, see you, dear,’ he said.

‘Alright.’

I sighed as the call was terminated. So, Mola had no wife. Was that why he sought consolation in the hands of somebody like me? Gosh!

I went back to work and busied myself. By seven p.m., Manu, his driver had come.

‘You’re early,’ I pointed out. ‘I may not be ready till nine o’clock.’

Manu grinned. ‘He said I should wait till you’re ready.’

That meant he would have to wait for long. I asked him to wait at the lobby. I however ensured that he was served a pack of food and bottle

The phone had rung on and on without being answered. He was obviously not in there.

‘It’s about your coming home late,’ she started.

He grunted and chuckled. ‘Is that why you look so disturbed? You know my work.

That’s what delays me.’

‘It’s not your work,’ she declared.

He looked briefly confused. ‘So, what keeps me coming late?’

‘I don’t know.’ She shrugged and suddenly looked stupid. She had been thinking over her best to put the matter across to him.

She didn’t want to appear confrontational, yet, she wanted to display high sense of assertiveness.

He gazed at her. She met his eyeballs and continued: ‘I don’t know what keeps you late. But I know it’s not your work. I’ve phoned your office at seven o’clock on some occasions and nobody answered the telephone. You weren’t there during those calls.’

For a moment, he looked like a cornered rabbit. Then, he quickly recovered and had a trace of annoyance on his face. ‘So, you’re snooping on me.’

She laughed sadly. ‘Is that what you called snooping? I only called because I cared and still do. Is that the best defense you could put up?’

‘Thanks for calling.’ His tone was sarcastic. He grasped for some words.

‘My mother just told me the same thing – about coming home late. The two of you are right. I’ll cut down on my working hours, henceforth.’

She asked him the most burdensome question: ‘Jide, are you seeing another woman?’ She almost choked on the words.

The question threw him off balance. She stared at him and noticed the moment of what looked to her like discomfiture.

‘There’s another woman, isn’t?’ Her voice became croaky and suddenly felt headache. Gosh!

‘Come on, Yeni. Don’t be ridiculous.’ He feigned a mixture of perplexity and anger.
‘How could you make such an accusation?’

She had known him enough to know when he was faking words. She burst into tears and started weeping uncontrollably. He couldn’t bear to watch her, yet he looked helpless.

Guilt weighed him down considerably. Of course, Yeni was right in her suspicion. Was there a woman who would not feel forlorn about such fears and their near-confirmations?

He moved over to her and wrapped his hands around her consolingly. He didn’t know what to say other than to plead with her to calm down. Apart from the feeling of guilt, he also felt confused. What could he do now? He was in a fix.

Ekaette was drunk. It could make matters easy for Biyi, just as it could complicate things. Whatever way it fell would be interesting, he decided.

‘Have you enjoyed yourself very well?’ he asked.

‘Yeah.’ She laughed girlishly. ‘Of course, I have.’

‘It’s getting late. It’s ten o’clock.’

‘Who cares?’

‘Trust me.’

‘I’m sorry my husband is expecting me at home, now.’

His face dropped. He looked shocked. ‘You … you’re married?’

‘About to. But he is as good being regarded as my husband. He’s been calling, waiting for me.’

He became indignant. ‘But you didn’t tell me you were engaged to a man!’ he accused.

‘But you didn’t ask,’ I answered crisply. I arranged the table and picked up my handbag.

I looked at him and smiled. ‘Thank you, Andy, but I’ve got to go now. We’ll see tomorrow.’

My last sentence must have given him some hope. He grinned.

‘Alright. Tomorrow, then.’

I paused to make him precede me out of the office, locked the office, waved at him and briskly moved towards the lobby. I knew he would eye
me the way a cat would eye an escaped beef. He gave the impression that he was an ‘American returnee,’ but see what an ordinary Lagos babe
had shown him. If those dollars were real, they would certainly be useful for something.

When I got home, I mentally calculated how much Andy’s money would fetch me in naira. On another thought, I believed I wasn’t really entitled
to the money. However, when I remembered Andy saying it had nothing to do with trying to seduce me (which of course was not true), I felt
quite justified.

My phone rang. It was Mola that was on the line.

‘You didn’t call me,’ he began.

‘Ah, I’m sorry,’ I replied. ‘How’re you and how was your trip to Warri?’

‘Fine. I miss you. Don’t you miss me?’

‘I do miss you, my darling,’ I said. The statement was far from the truth, but it was the best I could say.

‘I’ll soon be back in Lagos. Then, we’ll have good time together again.’

‘I earnestly look forward to that,’ I said.

We said some words of endearments to each before he finally hanged up.
