CSU releases Tinubu’s academic records, says his replacement certificate matches its format

 

The Chicago State University (CSU) has released the academic records of President Bola Tinubu, following requests by Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election.

Over the weekend, the US district court for the northern district of Illinois ordered the CSU to release the academic records of  Tinubu.

In response to Abubakar’s third request — which was to release a copy of the diplomas issued in 1997 — the university said the certificates match the format of the Tinubu replacement dated June 27, 1997.

“The documents responsive to this request which CSU, after diligent search, has been able to locate are produced herewith and Bates labelled CSU 0008 through CSU 0010. The students’ names on these diplomas have been redacted for privacy reasons. CSU is also producing, Bates labelled as CSU 0011 and 0012, diplomas produced for other CSU students (with their names redacted for privacy) which match the format of the Tinubu replacement dated June 27, 1997,” the university wrote.
(certificates) awarded in 1979 to other students were released by the university as demanded by Abubakar.

Tinubu had previously claimed to have lost his original certificates but presented a replacement of his CSU diploma to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2023 presidential election.


In the new documents released by CSU, Tinubu was addressed as a “Mr” in what looked like an admission letter.

He also ticked “male” in the undergraduate admissions application form.

However,  some of the transcripts circulating on the internet read “F”, suggesting “female”.

Also, a copy of his Southwest College record with which he gained admission into CSU also identifies him as “female”.



The samples of diplomas issued in 1997 released by CSU bear the same font and logo of what Tinubu submitted to INEC, but there is a discrepancy in the date.

CSU had, in its affidavit, taken responsibility for the discrepancy, blaming it on clerical error.

On September 19, Jeffrey Gilbert, a US magistrate judge, granted the request and ordered CSU to release Tinubu’s academic records within 24 hours.

However, the president moved to block it by filing an appeal against the order.

Nancy Maldonado, a federal judge, overruled Tinubu’s objections and ordered CSU to release the president’s academic records.

In its response to Abubakar’s request, the university said it could not find a copy of the original certificate it issued to Tinubu in 1979.


“CSU does not in the ordinary course keep copies of student diplomas, and after diligent search cannot locate a copy of the original diploma prepared for Mr Tinubu in 1979, hence has no documents responsive to this request,” the institution said.

The university released redacted diplomas of other students similar to that of Tinubu’s to show that the president graduated from its institution in the aforementioned year.

How to Score Financial Aid for Study Abroad

We've compiled as many study abroad scholarships and grants as we could find right here, but it's not an exhaustive one. In addition to looking here, here are some tips for finding more study abroad scholarships and grants:

Apply for federal financial aid -- many students don't realize that these government grants and loans may be used towards study abroad. You can fill out the application, known as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA, online at the US Department of Education FAFSA website

Once you pick a study abroad program, Google to find financial aid options available through that specific program.

Check with the government of the country you want to study abroad in -- some give financial support to international students.

Visit your financial aid office, study abroad office, and foreign language departments to ask about potential funding sources.

Ask your study abroad advisor if there are any scholarships specific to your major.

Check local organizations like Sons of Italy chapters, German clubs, Hispanic heritage groups, Chinese-American associations, etc. to see if they offer scholarships.

The internet is an excellent resource for locating a large number of study abroad scholarships. Many of these scholarships will allow you to apply directly online; potentially, you can apply for dozens of scholarships in a few short hours. However, their one downfall is that a larger application pool will reduce your chances to be awarded aid, but remember, you have to be in it to win it! Here are some popular places to start:

FastWeb: This website will not only help you find study abroad scholarships, but scholarships of all kinds that may help you get through the rest of college. The service is free but offers a number of extra benefits if you decide to register

IIE Passport: This database is a comprehensive search engine for all study abroad programs registered with IIE passport

Scholarships for Study in Australia: This database provided by the Australian government gives students easy access to the available funding for international students studying there

General Study Abroad Grants & Scholarships

As you'll see, there are lots of scholarships that are tied to the specific location or region where you're studying abroad. There is an equal number that can be used to fund your study abroad experience anywhere in the world.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

Offered by the Institute of International Education with support from the U.S. Department of State, Benjamin A. Gilman scholarships are offered to help students on Federal Pell Grants study abroad. Each scholarship is up to $5,000 and, generally, one in four students is selected as a recipient during each application cycle.This scholarship program warns applicants that if, at the time the program starts, the destination country is at a level 3 or 4 warning for COVID-19 according to the US Department of State's Travel Advisory System, another destination should be chosen.

Level: Undergraduate Students

Award: Up to $5,000 (and a supplement of up to $3,000)

Requirements: Students must be current recipients of a Federal Pell Grant
