Art, Graphics & Video / Re: Draw Your Ultimate Fighting Game Character by xothermik(m): 5:02pm On May 27, 2009
@esbeenatio. i concurr to kemji's nod at your work. though i think if you are going for a computer game of african or naija make. then you and you really expect want it to do well, then you shudn't be going for oriental or non african character's.i for one am a big fan of fighting games or beat em up's as they are more popularly known around the world and i dont think we can beat the asians or americans or even europeans in teir stuff.we cant make a better tekken or final fantasy or street fighter than the japaneese. or a better mortal kombat than the americans etc. i think we have more than enough skills to develope a computer game in this country and shud take far less personell and funding and even less 3d work to come up with a good nigerian fighting game just as long as there is a sponsor ready to fit the bill for the project. i had a similar ideah long ago to have a naija fighting game with different characters from all over the country from different ethnicities. e.g a tiv character who fights in a slow snakey movement similar to the tiv dance and the stage is a tiv community with tiv soundtrack, a hausa character who uses the hausa one arm boxing style in and has a hausa scene as his stage. an ibo guy who uses brute force fighting. a yoruba with say a rythmic kind of fighting to reflect the yoruba love for dance and rythm and so many others. obviously this will take some more research which will take more research which will fall under the budget but you guys get my drift doncha. if not anything our kids will love to have a game with their own people in it and will certainly learn more bout other nigerian cultures with it. i remember knowing and even having books about the background history and place of origin of street fighter and mortal combat game characters jus because i loved the game so much.

@Xothermik
Good going. Better finish soon though deadline is past. I gotta download me Zbrush. Any links for free stuff? I'm only getting 30day trials which sucks undecided

yeah i already posted my rushed entries to z pix yday and dint even get the chance to go back to max for hair and sss and that sweet renderin. my internet's been messd u dats y i havnt posted anything today. gess i shud just wait for mr z to post the whole entries. im really not happy with mine but hey. maybe i will get enough time to improve it after the whole thing. here's the textured model. i also think its bad that the only images available were barely 500 pixels and just hard to get good textures from.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: 3d Challenge II - Organic Modelling by xothermik(m): 6:00pm On May 20, 2009
nah im not thru yet. was sposd to burn a couple of hours on it before bed y'day but i was so freakin tired(inexplicably) and dint even make it to the bed. actually droppd my bag and crashd on the rug.(was sposd to be a breather but turnd out an overnight one). and i jus got bak to it.( got work 2 do to pay bills ya kno.)anyway this how far iv gone now. the time's closin in and i havnt started texturin yet. and then set up the render. if it gets tight i might actually jus render it here in z brush without going back to max. wanted to use some renderd hair. but men that will take some more time too.
mit just texture some mesh for that.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: 3d Challenge II - Organic Modelling by xothermik(m): 4:17pm On May 20, 2009
it still seems cool with me. my only problem is this. any participant shall post wip's and their work here as well before sending it to zpix. it wont be fair if anyone snuck in and sent in their entries. what im sayin s if i was somebody else right now, (and since this is not like by very best effort) i cud beat myself and make sure i come up with something better than what everyone especially since you can learn from other's works and improve. such underhand tactics shud not be allowd. if ur in this and u havnt posted wip's or final work do that please do that asap. let it be a fair competition and everyone hav a chance to do their best. if wip and other stuff werent required and we all just posted at the final day. it wud b fine. and after all this deadline extension i dunno y we still hav to extend to 6 am thursday tongue. wednesday ends midnight.
Art, Graphics & Video / Re: 3d Challenge II - Organic Modelling by xothermik(m): 12:36pm On May 19, 2009
HOLD IT! r u kiddin. not ready? spend an hour and a half of my sleepin like a baby time and even woke up late and m not ready tongue . hell na! still far from done tho tas y i dint wanna post yet. u can kinda c what i was talkin bout the front . still tryin to fix that. the nose is still wobbly, fix that too.havnt even touchd the lips yet. the eyes too and the brows can use more work.caught in two minds wether to jus use a mesh for hair or rendered fur. still thinking of what texture to use. dont want to use the poor res yaradua pics on the net. actually thot had more time than i have. will hav to rush a bit now.there's still uv's and photoshop and finally back to max for lighting and renderin.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: 3d Challenge II - Organic Modelling by xothermik(m): 6:25pm On May 17, 2009
rather than this. thats why id dint really grace any front views because im not happy with it particularly as i havent textured it(texturing actually conceals a lot of flaws). this is an issue that just scaling wont fix. i shud be able to fix it in z brush just by lookin at the actual pic and pushing vertices in and out and inflating where i need to.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: 3d Challenge II - Organic Modelling by xothermik(m): 6:21pm On May 17, 2009
whoops forgot to mention a problem i ran into(challenge really). turns out the pic i used for the front was'nt entirely a front orthographic view as hoped. that is to say the face was somewhat turned to one side making it even far less symmetrical. on other words by modeling half the face and mirroring it to the other side you'd get an yar adua that looks like this

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: 3d Challenge II - Organic Modelling by xothermik(m): 6:16pm On May 17, 2009
well thats it with phase one of mr yar adua. i will so hav fun with this model afterwards.  im still thinkin if i shud do uv's before z brush or vice versa. anyway more posts commin soon when i make progress. hope i dint bore y'all with my wip's.
@mr z pix  oga i don get vote oh. hope say dat prize don dey warm up grin

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: 3d Challenge II - Organic Modelling by xothermik(m): 6:11pm On May 17, 2009
@ 47 its Sagircarp@yahoo.com .

i then added a free form deform (ffd) modifier to the cylinder to give it a more natural shape and fit it to the head.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: 3d Challenge II - Organic Modelling by xothermik(m): 6:00pm On May 17, 2009
@ 47 thank a lot man im sure there's stuff i can learn from u too. thats the reality of this work. anyway bak to my cap i added a lathe modifier and got the basic cap shape. wud hav taken more time if i was trying to go poly for poly or from a cylinder.

thot i shud make a base mesh for the cap while still here in max before movin to z brush so i started with a spline( funny how i like startin everything with a spline these days) and made a shape of what half of a section of a cap should look like.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: 3d Challenge II - Organic Modelling by xothermik(m): 5:44pm On May 17, 2009
and deleted the polygons around the ear section. then extruded and welded edges ad created polygons to fill the void parts. and the ear is done for now.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: 3d Challenge II - Organic Modelling by xothermik(m): 5:41pm On May 17, 2009
with the ear done, the next stage was to attatch it to the head itself. i basically selected all the remaining edges delibrately left for this purpose and created a spline from it as a seperate object then attacthed this spline to the head

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: 3d Challenge II - Organic Modelling by xothermik(m): 5:33pm On May 17, 2009
and finally, the ear is not perfect especially as i didnt really use a reference and there was no one close to me at the moment to peek at (a lady at my office saw me starring at her the other day and thot i was hittin @ her. didnt know i was just doing research grin) . will add more detail and make it more organic when i get to z brush. this cool for now. gess shud hav cropped the images as put the whole thing in one single image. too late 4 dat now.

@kemji.basically yes.thats if you talking bout making a model from scratch because as u know there are many automated modeling apps.any software that uses the universal language of 3d can help u get a much better model without constraints. the names vary sometimes from here to there but they(the big six as gdon tagged them) are basically all the same. they all have stuff like vertex, edge, polygons, faces etc. and basically to creating a model is the same in all these guys, grab this vertex here, cut this face there, extrude this face there delete this edge etc. i used to make the mistake of evading tutorials for maya but now i cant get enough of em.

@all. finally got back to my model. Whalewale mentioned wanting to see how i go about making the ear so thot shud chip in some screen shots. basically drew 2 splines in the viewport fornt and left to give me some ref on what im modeling.(dint feel like going to create new image planes in photshop for the ear). i do this a lot if i understand what i wanna get well tho can be very unforgiving sometimes and might lead to more time due to some trial and error and improvisation also this usually only works if you can draw in the first place. i got away with it this time. started with a single plane and extruded the edge around.and welded the edge end extruded some more inner ear. then extruded edges inward and created more polygons. the pics pretty much speak for themselves.

kemji nice one man. you actually created something close. dumped mine like i said due to lack of a final date as zpix only suggested for approval by the house a date which you took as official. @ least now we know the final date. i shud jump bak at mine and hopefully have it finished by monday. great effort man.
@ others. guys come out now?

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: Most Cutting Edge Photorealistic Renderin And Head Replacement So Far. by xothermik(m): 10:41am On May 08, 2009
well said guys but i dont think system specs is a sufficient excuse to stay away from the big apps. you dont need monster specs to get learn modeling. i started 3d with a 256mb ram 3.0 ghz system with jus a 64 mb on board graphic card and tho kinda slow for some things i admit. i still was able to learn a lot without problems. the main things that i thing guzzle up most specs are rendering with advanced lighting especially when u use stuff like vray. then if you no get specs, you jus lookin for trouble, or when you start having too many things on one scene. but for just learning basic modeling. which i feel is a fundamental part of 3d education.
Art, Graphics & Video / Re: Most Cutting Edge Photorealistic Renderin And Head Replacement So Far. by xothermik(m): 2:02pm On May 05, 2009
although im primarily a 3ds max user. i think i will advice you to start with maya. the reason is simple,iv been watchin a lot of behind the scenes and read cg mags and as for character animation goes, i think maya might have a small leverage. most of the big animation productions (surfs up, star wars clone wars, kung fu panda etc.) were done with maya. how ever there are other great apps that will get you very far(and i dont think poser is one of them) i think for this part of the world it will be better if u take maya or max. like i said there are other apps i mean xsi or modo were pretty much unknown by most of us but thanks to graphikdon we've seen just what you can achieve with different apps if you give it enough practise and determination. there are about 5 great apps that will really get you going if u set ur mind to it. i might not be able to remember them all graphikdon please give us those apps again u once mentioned. i makin reference to graphikdon because i think he has had a very broad knowledge on most if not all this apps so it will be nice if you can give this fella ur advice. as for me i think u shud pick maya.

Guys just saw the benjamin button move and i must say if i had'nt seen the behind the scenes of how the went about achieving such a perfect c.g head replacement. i wud hav jus thot it was just some normal midget that played the young (or is it old) benjamin button. for those of you who dont know what im talking about, the curious case of benjamin button is a story of a man who was born old and aged in reverse. that is he grew younger till he died of infancy tongue (died of infant age lol). intrestin huh. the movies story itself is pretty powerful but as a c.g enthusiast. its the head replacement they used that makes it worth mentioning here. the head was entirely 3d including his glasses. but its not just the photorealism of the had that marvels me. in order for the audience to really believe that its actuall an old version of brad pitt, they used cuttin edge mocap to get all the facial movement's expressions and lip sync which mr pitt himself acted and was captured with cameras along with powerful facial mocap software to capture every single movement and emotion. mr pitt has indeed proven himself a great actor because its not easy to just stand in front of a camera and act out scenes with the right expressions and emotions (and there were some really emotional scenes)when there's no other actors to really immerse u into it. apart from the facial expressions, the camera matching and 3d tracking of the head as it moves on its own is something tho really behold in utter awe. i really enjoyed the movie and it even inspired me to do a little research on facial mocap. men this 3d world sef first they develop body mocap that does'nt even need spandex suits or markers where u jus go and act as u want to dress and walla, your captured. now facial mocap. make u wonder, will animatiors eventually grow extinct with new softwares takin over their jobs everyday?

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: 3d Challenge II - Organic Modelling by xothermik(m): 9:44pm On May 01, 2009
actually z brush is a solid and powerful software that is in almost every major hollywod studio and animation studio in the world even those that dont have it amost certainly have mudbox which is kinda the same thing.how ever(and this is just my opinion too) i feel the first statement only applies if you use z brush the right way.z brush was actually used in the pirates of the carrebean. how ever it was mostly to create bump, norma and displacement maps. i might actually use z brush to finish up my model to put in spots bumps and facial blemishes and maybe some of the finer wrinkles. but only after i get the head done and have it done properly and put in all the detalil i can in max while ensuring i have good loops and trying my best to keep all the polygons quads.this may not be essential for illustration sake but is critical if u plan to use it for animation.
@ others where una works now.
@z pix guy you need to state your deadline soon to ginger up the comrades. grin
