E3 'The Address'

When the house is built, shall we leave it without an address? When the site is set up, shall we leave it without a url? No That's what I thought.

So far I've written this series on a free plan basis, this episode is no different. By the way in episode 2, I wrote about auto-installers only, and you were probably thinking, what about if I want a custom design? want that? Go learn php in full & create a custom script, or, Get a php script and make a desired mod out of it (I do that a lot) , Or Hire a pro to get the job done. Back to address issue. When done with your site on a free host, your url would be name.subdomain.tld , e.g newsite.easynaija.com , but you don't expect users / visitors to keep typing that long thing according to D' banj everytime they want to visit your site, they'll eventually get fed up by it and ditch visiting, ofcourse there a better alternatives for them provided by your counterparts. So why not rename it Can I? Yes you can! To get a free custom domain I'd recommend Freenom.com , ain't affiliated with them though but this organisation has exquisitely executed her service over the years. Goto the website, input your desired domain name & put your current url as the url for new domain to be forwarded to, checkout as a registered user/sign up while doing so.

Forwarding a domain ain't as cool as parking it! So after doing the above, sign in into your freenom account, click Domains>my domains> under the domain name click 'manage domain' > management tools> set Dns> tick 'use custom dns' > then in the input in the;

first box : ns1.main-hosting.com
second box : ns2.main-hosting.com
third box: ns3.main-hosting.com
fourth box : ns4.main-hosting.com

and save changes.

Now log into your account at your freehost, switch to your hosting plan panel, in the drop down menu, click 'Parked domains' and park the freenom domain you created.

Now let's make it your base url. Some script auto gets their base url from the domain name they were called from & use it as such throughout the session(mostly custom script like viral dcms). Others however gets theirs from their config file. To change base url, you'd have to login into a ftp client site, e.g ftps. (not affiliated with them) .

FTP LOGIN Guide.

FTP SERVER : is ftp.sitename.subdomain.tld (i.e ftp. the old url)
Username : is uNINEDIGITS (e.g u223372156) , you'd find this in details below menu-list in your cpanel.

Password : your password to the hosting plan, not that hosting account profile.

Port: 21

Directory : public_html
------------------------------------------------
when logged in, goto config file click edit, change old url to new one&save.

Can't find config file? Not to worry, I'll drop a reference topic on it ASAP.

That's pretty much all about the address.

With Yoast, you can add Keywords to each posts you make, and many more option for good search engine optimization option of the whole site and each post as well.


And oh, mobilepress is responsive, shows only to mobile users. Visit my website via pc & you'll see a different layout, theme interface will take toll & it's responsive even on mobile, just that mobilepress deals with data optimization better.

You don't just own a land just to own it, you'd intend to build on it, right Well, here's where the php scripts come in.

Simply put you can't build a php website without a php script, same way you can't build a house without bricks, cement & other neccessities. If you're a die-hard coder like E.B.A , softaculous or auto-installer wouldn't really interest you, but they are ideal for quickening setting up a php website. A php script is either licensed with monthly or a one-time fee or it's an open source script, we wouldn't really be discussing about the paid scripts but examples are; Jcow social networking script, Xenforo Forum script, last time I checked, Jcow costs $219 that's either almost or N40,000 , I'm sure you're currently shouting ''FORGET IT!'' .

[Softaculous&Auto installer are websites softwares which render php scripts installation with a click. However, they are not the only website softwares that serve the purpose as their are others such as scriptaculous, but in from my view, they are the most popular.]

Auto installer, available on free hosting, bring to you a variety of scripts for auto installtion, ranging from forum scripts to blogs, e-commerce an a few more.

Auto installer is way much more than easy to use. After getting your account @ a freehost, create a hosting account with account, switch to the cpanel of the newly created account, click 'auto installer' choose your desired script, fill in the details[usuall just your desired username for your site and password, but if you want to install the script in a sub-folder[or directory], write folder[directory] name in the first text box & click install, that's it, a database will be auto-created & necessary sql tables will be set up. Now all you need to do is go to your site, login & commence modification, virtually almost all scripts offered by auto-installer do not require ftp login for modification except when you want to change logo. Some of the scripts available are punBB,phpBB,myBB,Os-commerce,PivotX...

It also offers Jcow that would work without $219 payment, but it has crazy limitations, e.g 100 members limit, and more.

Last time I checked, Softaculous is available only on Paid hostings.
