Commercial vehicles in Nigeria seems a vibrant market in Nigeria. However, I think one must have a very good knowledge on how the market works.

I have written a piece previously about 'not buying and selling junks' in the past. Despite this position, I do look in wonder when people show off vehicles that look and must be dangerous to drive. i still remain opposed to it.

I searched for vehicles made in the 1990s just to justify my rational thinking. I found this source for buying vehicles such as Toyota Hiace that may appear old (1997 and 1999) but look very good! In fact, I was shocked when I saw them and was very tempted to buy one and put on the ship for Lagos.
No, I decided to hold my fire and seek the views of the pros on this web site. This model is well known and still ply the length and breath of Nigeria.
Is it possible to look for what will not be a driving coffin and not feel compromised despite its old age and feeling confident that lives will not be put at risk? In the western countries, very old vehicles are referred to as 'antiques'. They are sometimes refurbished. Trusting the strict rules governing vehicles, they are rigorously tested before being certified road worthy. The prices go at premium rates. The case for Nigeria is different and that is why thinking about the safety of others becomes imperative when it comes to dealing in vehicles going for sale. It is normal that there are always the back hand dealers whose policy is anything goes as long as the money flows.
The Toyota Hiace you will be seeing below are 1997 and 1999 models with very clean records.
The help I want from the pros here are three pronged namely:

1. For the 1997 (167,000km) and 1999 (178,000km) models, their cost to berth in Lagos and cleared would be in the regions of N1.70 and N2.10 million respectively. Scrutinise the two vehicles and let me know your thoughts on how much they can be sold for on arrival.

2. There is this Nissan Intestar model 2002 with 177,000km and estimated cost to Lagos including clearing at N1.80 million. Is this Nissan type known in Nigeria? How might it fare in the market? And how much might it be at market rate for sale?

3. Lastly there is the Peugeot Boxer 2003 with 189,000km. I know we assemble Peugeot in Nigeria but not sure if Boxer is one of the models being assembled. What do you pros think about this vehicle. Estimated cost to Lagos including clearing is estimated at N1.7 million.
The same questions arise. Is this type known in Nigeria? How might it fare in the market and how much could it be sold?

While I have been honest upfront as best as I can in terms of total cost of getting the vehicles on the road in Lagos, I want you pros to also be honest in terms of the possible selling prices. I do thank you guys in advance for this support.

You must be aware that European Motorways are not like ours in Nigeria. These vehicles suffer less wear and tear on motorways than when used within cities.

Victoriousvic, you are right in a sense. These vehicles are not only the same in body, but similar in so many other ways. With information provided below, you will note that it does not matter which of the three you buy, because they are all the same due to cooperation between three major motor manufacturers. Their parts are generally interchangeable. I want to generate the interest of Nigerians on the these fantastic vans that are one of the best sellers in Europe and UK. Nigerians tend to get fixated on certain information that does the rounds. A typical example is that vehicles from Europe and the Americas develop overheating because the thermostats have been left on. What happens next? These 'professionals' advise that you remove it. It would appear to work but with long term penalty and cost!

Another type of 'engines not to buy' is the diesel. The reason for this in my personal opinion is because there are not many mechanics with experience on them. They prefer the petrol which they got their 'freedoms' on. Do you know that diesel engines are made to last longer than their petrol counterparts? It is therefore no surprise that diesel engines at over 1,000,000 kilometres on the big trucks and trailers still cost an eye. Diesel engines will continue going as long as they are serviced regularly.
Please do not get me wrong. Every engine cannot last for life.

What I would like to suggest to budding future mechanics is to seriously consider specialisation in diesel engined vehicles. There is a market for this. The money is also there to be made. By being one, you will be one of the few elites in the trade!
Let Nigerians change their mind when it comes to what type of engine they are influenced to buy. Diesel in my view is better, more long lasting and are becoming quieter!

The Transporter is not the most inspiring van around to look at, drivers will be pleased to find the inside had been given a bit more thought. Storage options are plenty for all manner of bits and bobs and a lockable glove box is handy for security. You could easily be in a people carrier such is the refinement and simplicity of the cabin. The piece de resistance of this van though is the performance on the road, even without a load the steering is almost perfect and the ride comfortable. You could be forgiven for thinking you are not actually in a commercial vehicle so quiet is the ride and the engine noise is quieter than most vans. Every model has as standard remote central locking, a height and reach adjustable steering wheel, a height, and adjustable driver's seat, drivers' airbag and ABS brakes. The T4 first hit the streets in 1990 and its successor the T5 Transporter has seen improvements. Looks wise there is no difference from the outside although one of the key objectives was to make the Transporter bigger. At 4,890mm long, 1,904mm wide and 1,969mm high, in short-wheelbase/low-roof form, the T5 Transporter is 183mm longer, 64mm wider and 29mm higher than the equivalent T4. Available in three roof heights and two wheelbases producing a range of load cubes spanning from 5.9 to 8.4 cubic meters. Payloads of between 795 and 1,245kg depending on your choice of body style and engine. As well as the panel vans there are chassis cabs, double cabs and the Transporter Shuttle. VERDICT
Some of the best engines in its class. This vans interior and drive is like an MPV at the front with a good loading space in the back. Nothing special in the looks department.

These are stocks which have been cleared from the source company to make way for new stocks. They are not sold as Brand New stock.The vast majority of this stock is from the warehouses of some of the largest Mail Order companies in the UK and, as such, is believed to be in perfect condition. I fly Arik Air. New fleet but the Nigerian factor is creeping in. I felt trickles of water drop on me on this aircraft. I suggest they do not spare maintenance cost for short term gains. I will still patronise Arik Air. Look at the first photo very closely and will notice some droplets.

There should be order with these officers. Others will learn from those sacked. However, will you agree with me that these apoti fedeco drivers are seriously deranged? From my daily experience of these drivers, they should be kept away from driving and on Lagos Roads. They are serious dangers to other road users.

A well organised and more professionally mannered LASTMA officers will receive more respect in particular if they stop compromising themselves. Respect cannot be coerced on people (commercial drivers) as long as the 'egunje' factor is in play.

LASG should retrain these officers. Do they have supervisions? Are there task forces monitoring these officers to keep them on their toes? LASG should carry out a 'one offence, one strike only' regime when it comes to these apoti fedeco drivers and LASTMA Officers. One strike means apprehension and destruction of the vehicle in question as well as sacking erring officers. This will definitely bring sanity to our roads. My view.
