Three days to the planned formation of Biafran government by its acclaimed leader, Mr. Ben Onwuka, some executive members of the Biafra Zionist Movement, BZM, have announced the suspension of Mr. Onwuka. The group, made up of the National Chairman, Edeson Samuel, National secretary Nweke Monday and Treasurer Friday Ogbonna, while addressing a press conference in Enugu on Sunday urged Biafran faithful to disregard the earlier announcement that the group will be inaugurating the Biafran government on February 20th. National Chairman of the BZM Mr. Samuel Edeson who led the group said in his address that: “BZM wishes to inform the general public that Mr. Benjamin Igwe Onwuka has been suspended from the group from this day February 2, 2013. “We the executive arm of the BZM also wishes to alert the public that the so called inauguration of Biafra government slated for February 20, is not in our plans for now and therefore should be ignored.” He alleged that Onwuka was acting in disregard of decisions of the national executive council which was the highest organ of the organization, thus had decided to call him to order through a suspension. “BZM is not a one-man show and we cannot allow anybody to treat the decisions of the executive council with disdain”, he added. However, in a swidt reaction to his alleged suspension, leader of the group Mr. Ben Onwuka dismissed claims of his suspension describing his critics as persons being used by detractors to frustrate the efforts of the BZM. He insisted that nothing will stop the inauguration of the Biafra government on February 20th. But the BZM leader Mr. Onwuka who said he was just rising from a meeting with his group said: “I want to tell you that these people are being used to cause trouble in BZM. “The people who addressed you have long seized to be members of BZM; they were sacked because of their roles and for allowing themselves to be used as instruments of destabilization of the Biafran struggle”. |

More gifts for the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on Friday announced a cash gift of N54.5 million to the victorious Super Eagles. The governor, who hosted the Eagles in his office at Ikeja, gave coach Stephen Keshi N2.5million, while his immediate assistant, Daniel Amokachi, got N2 million. Each of the other four assistant coaches, including Ike Shorunmu and Sylvanus Okpala got N1.5million each, while the team’s captain, Joseph Yobo, was also given N1.5 million. Each of the other 22 players was given N1 million while each scorer of the 11 goals scored in the tournament by the team received an additional N500,000. The governor also captured the backroom staff of the team in the largesse with N15 million, while another N4.5 million was given to the supporters’ club. Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Fashola said the donation was the state’s ‘token’ appreciation of the team for doing the nation proud in South Africa. The governor said the team`s feat in South Africa was a unique achievement for Nigerian sports, saying it had brought the country back into reckoning in world football. Mr. Fashola warned against complacency, urging the team as well as sports administrators to do all they could to build on the current achievement to record more successes. “Now that we have won the AFCON trophy, the question to ask is what next? We have Kenya to contend with in a few days. “Let us remind ourselves that Zambia, the immediate defending champions of the tournament, did not make it to the second round. “We have the Confederation Cup in June that provides us with an opportunity to improve on our performance. “Yes, we have moved from very abysmal ranking to 4th in Africa and 30th in the world but we must remember that the ranking used to be better because in 1994, we were ranked 5th in the world. “Really, the job is not done yet, so we must begin to plan ahead and do all the right things to ensure the team performs better,” he said. The governor canvassed improvement of the local league as well as grassroots football, saying that both had the prospect of impacting on Nigeria`s performance in international competitions. He also urged sport officials to desist from frequent interference with national teams, especially in the affairs of the coaching crew, saying the practice undermined their successes in competitions. Members of the Lagos State Executive Council and prominent citizens of the state were among those who received the team at the Government House, Alausa. The Super Eagles on Sunday defeated Burkina Faso 1-0 at the final of the 2013 Orange Africa Cup of Nations, to emerge African champions. Super Eagles and Chelsea of England midfield star, John Mikel Obi, was a relieved man on Friday afternoon after the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the continental soccer ruling body, cleared him for the quarter final duel against the Elephants of Cote D’ Ivoire. Looking relaxed and in the company of roommate Victor Moses, Mikel said he was hurt when it was reported that he had picked up two yellow cards. “I am the one that is always at the receiving end of hard tackles and I knew that I had only one yellow card but the media was going about it that I have two.” He said he had become a little confused but was happy and relieved following the official confirmation of his status, and ready for the match. “I know that Africa wants the best of both countries in the quarterfinal and personally I’m looking forward to the midfield battle against Ivorien Yahya Toure, that will be one good spectacle that Africans will like to see and I know that Toure is also relishing it,” he added. Team Coach, Stephen Keshi, also said he was a bit alarmed by reports that Nigerians have already written off the Super Eagles in that game against the Ivoriens. “It’s at this point that we need the total support of all Nigerians and I must urge them not to detract from that,” he said. “Names don’t play football and our players are ready to give their all in the game against Ivory Coast.” http://saharareporters.com/sports-page/mikel-cleared-caf-ready-afcon-q-final |
