Nairaland / General / BREAKING: Kofi Annan, Former UN Secretary-general Dies In Switzerland by yankaba(f): 3:43pm On Aug 18, 2018
Former UN Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize champ Kofi Annan has kicked the bucket at age 80, an UN organization affirmed Saturday.

Annan, who was born in Ghana in 1938, filled in as the seventh UN Secretary-General, from 1997 to 2006, and was the first to ascend from inside the positions of the United Nations staff.

He had been an individual from The Elders, a gathering of worldwide pioneers working for human rights, since it was established in 2007. In 2013, he turned into its executive.

The UN Migration Agency tweeted: "Today we grieve the departure of an extraordinary man, a pioneer, and a visionary."

— IOM – UN Migration (@UNmigration) August 18, 2018

Annan was granted the Nobel Peace Prize together with the United Nations in 2001 "for their work for a superior sorted out and more tranquil world."

He was hitched with three kids.

Kofi Atta Annan, born 8 April 1938, was a Ghanaian negotiator who filled in as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1997 to December 2006. Annan and the UN were the co-beneficiaries of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize. He was the originator and director of the Kofi Annan Foundation, and administrator of The Elders, a global association established by Nelson Mandela.

Born in Kumasi, Annan proceeded to think about financial matters at Macalester College, worldwide relations from the Graduate Institute Geneva and administration at MIT. Annan joined the UN in 1962, working for the World Health Organization's Geneva office. He proceeded to work in a few limits at the UN Headquarters including filling in as the Under-Secretary-General for peacekeeping between March 1992 and December 1996. He was selected as the Secretary-General on 13 December 1996 by the Security Council, and later affirmed by the General Assembly, making him the main office holder to be chosen from the UN staff itself. He was re-chosen for a second term in 2001, and was prevailing as Secretary-General by Ban Ki-moon on 1 January 2007.

As the Secretary-General, Annan changed the UN administration; attempted to battle HIV, particularly in Africa; and propelled the UN Global Compact. He has been censured for not extending the Security Council and confronted calls for renunciation after an examination concerning the Oil-for-Food Program. In the wake of leaving the UN, he established the Kofi Annan Foundation in 2007 to chip away at universal improvement. In 2012, Annan was the UN– Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria, to help discover a determination to the continuous clash there. Annan quit in the wake of getting to be disappointed with the UN's absence of advance as to compromise. In September 2016, Annan was designated to lead an UN commission to examine the Rohingya emergency. Kofi Annan kicked the bucket on the morning of 18 August 2018 at a clinic in Switzerland after short sickness.

Nairaland / General / To Kill A Mockingbird by yankaba(f): 6:13am On Jul 26, 2018
By Ashraf Akintola

There once lived a mockingbird on the tree of providence. She is rich with nothing and all other birds mocked her for her house that is filled with air. She wasn’t moved by their mockery, nor do her heart despair for the want of being called the strongest and the best. She was just herself and her whistles of joy and contentment produced the best of melody that men; the topmost animal in the food chain yearn to listen to. They made it a law upon themselves not to harm her but arm her with a company in their abodes and a protection from other beasts of the jungle that might hurt her. Truly the mockingbird has nothing. She is weak and dull coloured, but as they say, to kill a Mockingbird is to prey on someone whose gentle and meek personality meant you no harm. Life is in itself a mockingbird! It wanders around and sometimes scratches on our door. And sometimes we assume the form of the prey that wants to take advantage of its meekness. But God who is at the elms of our affairs has already had it protected.

In our existence here on earth, we would come across some people that have been made a Mockingbird. That means their success in life goes beyond the ordinary explanation of “survival of the fittest.” They appear powerless and “Swaggerless” to occupy the position that God has brought them to be and you are left to wonder; “How on earth do they get to this peak?”. Yes, that feeling is just a natural expression of who we are and who we were taught by the society to be. We feel someone that has what we dream to achieve should also pass through the same stress we faced, or even worse. It’s a pity the world doesn’t work that way! Surely, a Mockingbird would also yearn to be the biggest and the brightest bird in the sky, nay, he would even sweat and labour for it. All through its travails, it wasn’t granted that wish but was giving something bigger, something that even the biggest birds would crave for.

When you reason at the reason why the sky is made so wide, you would come to the conclusion that it was made so, so that we all can fly without clapping on each other’s feathers. And if you would reflect on why the earth is so flat, you would see that it is for us not to trip on another's steps. How about the blue waters of the ocean that has room for anything thrown at it. Its all a sign to the fact that If you have been made the eagle that glides with pomp and grandeur in the sky, remember that another being is the mockingbird that her whistles of joy from contentment in poverty is the currency that later made her rich. If you are the whale that rules the dominion of the deepest oceans, pay homage to the dolphin whose wit and mastery of the language of man earned her a life-long friend. And if you are the king of the jungle, take heed of the Dog that can lead man to your abode.

Gods favour in our lives is not uni-dimensional but it takes a form in which the plantain that I have been given would need the beans to which you have been endowed. And the car of your life wouldn’t drive without the fuel in my tank. We are all blessed in several ways, don’t let the success of others stir any form of destructive envy in you. Rather, wish them well, even though you aren't at par with how they got to where they are and also pray for them. For you never know when you too can be a Mockingbird and you would need someone out there preying on your predators and also praying for you.

Business / How To Start Your Business With No Capital by yankaba(f): 6:33am On Jul 25, 2018
Do you have a great business idea but no capital (Money) to start it up? Are you student with no collateral for loan, no generous uncle nor any credit source? or Just a friend who have been finding it difficult to get that little cash to start-up that idea that worth millions? Here is a little tip on how to start-up your business with no kobo.

While it's true that a source of capital like a close relative with deep pocket, generous credit line or investors make starting a business easier, not having money is no excuse. If you have trust in your idea and you are confident of a product or service people will queue up for, then don't allow capital to be a obstacle from reaching your business goals.

Heard about the word BOOTSTRAP? not that use in computing! It simply means to help yourself without the aid of others, to advance yourself to accomplishing your business goals with aid. How do you go about it? Keep reading

Use service-oriented business to generate revenue for you product-oriented business

Service-oriented business is easy to start, the major capital being your skill. You can start from providing a free service to someone whom when impressed would refer you to to friends who will be willing to pay for your service. Product-based service often require significant capital for start-up and running. So consider starting with a service oriented business to generate capital for your product-based business.

I remember during SIWES days, I wanted to start-up a poultry farming, but had no money. Knowing I needed money to buy the chicks, construct a cage and buy feeds and other miscellaneous. I approached my IT supervisor and asked if i could be of help in analyzing his PhD project data, even though, I only had theoretical knowledge of analysis, but have a statistician as a friend who is a guru at analyzing data. I assured him I could get it done in a week and at a relatively cheap price to him travelling from Ibadan to Ilorin to meet someone his friends referred him to.

That person you have helped will surely refer you to others, ones the service is good and may earn you your fist income. Though you shouldn't expect high payment. Your first customer if well impressed, will be your advertiser: referring new customers to you. That's how i learnt to analysis and also gain a loyal customer who referred me to many of his colleagues from whom I raised enough capital to start my poultry farming. Yes! it's determination and persistent to convince my first customer that transform my no capital to a capital.

Be Desperate in the pursuit of your goals

It's said that desperate times call for desperate measures. If you are having trouble finding access to funds, there are a number of creative things you can do. If you believe you have a solid idea and a workable business plan, you may want to consider a submitting a proposal to the Bank of Industry (BOI) or other state economic development organizations or institutions. They could help fund your idea and monitor/supervise your progress. There are several loan opportunities set up by both state and federal government for corp members, graduates, farmers and business women you could take advantage of.

Add some uniqueness to what the you provide, either service or product.

Differentiate yourself from your counterparts by adding value to yourself. Learn new skills to help bring your business up the ladder: small things makes the difference. I know you must have heard the word packaging, you can introduce that to your business. If you have some revenue coming in but need an extra boost to get to the million turn-over mark, make sure to consider every possible way that your business can differentiate itself.

The only real way to start generating revenue for your business is to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Despite what others may tell you, there is no easy shortcut to profit. But if you are confident you have a product or service that people want, you can propel your way to the top by pivoting, grinding it out, getting creative, and differentiating yourself...
