I was discussing with some of my friends on a statement credited to GEJ where he was quoted to have said patrick sawyer deserve to rot in hell for travelling to nigeria with the ebola virus.some of my friends were like that GEJ was too harsh on him! But in my own personal view after going through this write on how he travelled to nigeria was that patrick sawyer is wicked heartless and deserve to rot in HELL as GEJ rightly stated. Fellow nairalanders what are your views on patrick sawyer. The moderator should move this to front page for nigerians to know the true genesis of the EBOLA virus into our dear country NIGERIA Patrick Sawyer’s Windy Journey to Nigeria As a high-spirited people, life has always been on the move for most Nigerians. But that mobility has been limited by the deadly Ebola virus. The death of a Liberian Ebola victim, Patrick Sawyer, in a Lagos hospital has opened up a floodgate of Ebola cases in the country. Adeola Akinremi writes on the journey of one man into Africa’s most populous country, exactly 23 days after he arrived on the soil of Nigeria with the virus It’s a mild-weathered day in Monrovia, the Liberian capital. The weeping and wailing of those losing loved ones can be heard from a distance. True, there are no petals in Monrovia. Its bloom withers with a ravaging virus. Inside his home in Monrovia, Patrick Sawyer, 40, looks into the mirror for a conviction. With his flight ticket in his hand, he must travel to Nigeria for an Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) duty. But for the umpteenth time, the memory of his late sister flashes through his mind. He shrugs it off. In a moment, he moves out of his base for a voyage to Nigeria. He carries the Ebola virus with him. The only reason for the death of his sister, just a few days earlier. As the car carrying him rolls along the weak-surface airport road, his mind moves away from Monrovia. At the Spriggs Payne Airport in Monrovia, Sawyer is under the prying eye of the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), but he’s unaware. His strange behaviour and frequent pacing up and down is making him a centre of attraction for the security camera operator. Sawyer is spending the time waiting for Asky Airline that will fly him to Nigeria with a layover in Togo. With the virus under his cloaks, he chose to suffer in silence. “His strange behaviour and frequent movement up and down as he eagerly awaits his Asky flight had prompted the security camera operator to focus on him. In the video, Patrick could be seen avoiding physical contacts with airport employees and other passengers during the check in process,” says The New Dawn, a national newspaper in Monrovia. A wide-eyed young man with a chubby cheek, it’s hard to figure out that Sawyer is sick, except that his sister died of Ebola virus earlier and the news of his contact with his sister is everywhere. The bloodstain on his cloth the day his sister died blew the lid open, but Sawyer is pretending that he’s free of the deadly Ebola virus. Now, the Airport video footage shows Sawyer lying flat on his stomach on the floor in the corridor of the airport with a sign of excruciating pain. He frequently prevents people from touching him as well. Yes, he snubs an Immigration officer who wants a handshake as he walks unto the boarding gate. Now aboard Asky aircraft to Nigeria, Sawyer is feeling cool with himself. At least he’s no more in the troubled zone of Monrovia. He escapes being quarantined. But the virus is moving with him. Without a doubt, Sawyer is terribly sick where he’s seated aboard the Asky aircraft, but he’s living in denial. His vomit hours before he leaves Monrovia has become a case in reference. FrontPage Africa, another Liberian newspaper, reports that Sawyer, who is believed to have been infected by his sister who died of Ebola told its reporter soon before he travelled to Nigeria that he had gone in search of his sister's husband who ran away after she tested positive for Ebola. The newspaper says Sawyer vomited a few times among his friends in Liberia just before heading to the airport and also on the plane. In Nigeria, Sawyer steps off the airplane at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and slumps. The Ebola virus is having a grip on him with embarrassment. Of course, credulous Nigerians at the airport think it’s a mere fatigue, so they rush to help him up. That way, he passes the virus into the country. The journey to discovery will start in a jiffy. He’s to be taken to the First Consultants Hospital in Obalende area of Lagos. First Consultants is for the high-class, its services are first-class too. On the way there, Sawyer sufficiently passes the virus into the car conveying him with his bodily fluids. The driver and the ECOWAS support staff accompanying him are not spared too. The story rings true at the hospital, but he denies three times like Simon Peter’s denial of truth about his relationship with Jesus Christ. He’s violent and becoming abusive to scare off the health workers. At this time, the doctor and nurse who are having the first contact with Sawyer catch the bug. They are now living with the virus without an idea. “Looking to get to the bottom of Sawyer’s strange ailment on the Asky Airline flight, which Sawyer transferred on in Togo, hospital officials say, he was tested for both malaria and HIV AIDS. However, when both tests came back negative, he was then asked whether he had made contact with any person with the Ebola Virus, to which Sawyer denied. Sawyer’s sister, Princess had died of the deadly virus on Monday, July 7, 2014 at the Catholic Hospital in Monrovia,” reports Frontpage Africa. At around 6pm on July 25, Sawyer died and Nigeria records its index case in a virus that is alien to the country. And a few days later the nurse who treated Sawyer died too. Now the government says there are over 100 cases in the country with a fatality rate of 28.9 per cent. Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf cited indiscipline and disrespect as a key reason Sawyer contracted the Ebola virus. She says his failure to heed medical advice put the lives of other residents across the nation’s border at risk. But for his death, Sawyer has planned to visit the United States after touching down in Nigeria. He’s in the mood for celebration. It’s August and two of his girls would be celebrating their birthdays. “Patrick was coming here. What if he still wasn't displaying symptoms yet and came. He could have brought Ebola here. Someone else could bring Ebola here,” says Decontee Sawyer, his wife of six years. Distressed Decontee in an interview with Pioneer Press says she’s sharing her husband's fate so that the public can understand how quickly the virus can spread. Sawyer, who worked for the Liberian Finance Ministry, married his wife Decontee in December 2008, in Coon Rapids. According to reports, the couple, who both hold US citizenship, are originally from Liberia. They are part of the large Liberian community in Minnesota, United States, who moved there in the aftermath of Liberia’s two civil wars in the 1980s and late 1990s. Sadly, Sawyer is gone, with his ashes given back to his country, but Nigerians are battling with the outbreak and rumours cure. At first, it was about kolanut as a cure, and then the rhythm changed to salt bath. None of that will cure Ebola, experts say. Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebushi Chukwu calls it “wicked lie,” and his counterpart at the Ministry of Information, Labaran Maku, says those spreading such bad rumour should be careful because the laws are there to catch up with them. “There is no known cure. Anyone infected with this disease should stay within the quarantine area.” he adds. Now, those who experiment with salt as a fortification against Ebola virus in Jos, Plateau State are hospitalised. Reports say they took the salt in excess and later came down with various ailments. Health experts warn that people should be more careful, wash their hands with soap or use sanitiser constantly, because it’s unclear how far the virus has spread in the country from the index case of Sawyer. They say religious centres must be wary of the virus, because of the way people mingle there freely. Clearly, Ebola virus is on the loose in Nigeria through contact with just one man who escaped quarantine. It is the windy journey of Patrick Sawyer. Ebola Virus Facts Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a severe, often fatal illness in humans. It is a rare but deadly virus that causes bleeding inside and outside the body. As the virus spreads through the body, it damages the immune system and organs. Ultimately, it causes levels of blood-clotting cells to drop. This leads to severe, uncontrollable bleeding. It spreads to people by contact with the skin or bodily fluids of an infected animal, like a monkey, chimp, or fruit bat. Then it moves from person to person the same way. Those who care for a sick person or bury someone who has died from the disease often get it. Other ways to get Ebola include touching contaminated needles or surfaces. You can’t get Ebola from air, water, or food. A person who has Ebola but has no symptoms can’t spread the disease, either. Early on, Ebola can feel like the flu or other illnesses. Symptoms show up 2 to 21 days after infection and usually include: High fever, headache, Joint and muscle aches, Sore throat, weakness, stomach pain, lack of appetite among others. As the disease gets worse, it causes bleeding inside the body, as well as from the eyes, ears, and nose. Some people will vomit or cough up blood, have bloody diarrhoea, and get a rash. The EVD outbreaks have a case fatality rate of up to 90 per cent. Currently EVD outbreaks have been recorded in Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. There have been pockets of suspected cases in Saudi Arabia, United States and Spain. Ebola Virus Myth It is not true that Ebola virus disease can be cured with Kola nut or prevented through bath salt. There is no known cure for the virus and it’s only preventable through regular hand washing with soap and the use of sanitiser. No licensed specific treatment or vaccine is available for use in people or animals. It is important to report a case immediately it occurs to avoid its spread and contact with such a person should be avoided. Ebola is not an airborne disease. Tambuwal, sule lamido, gen buhari, atiku, kwaskoso of kano, aliyu babagida and maybe amechi who among the above mentioned names can defeat or give GEJ nightmare in 2015 presidential election ![]() ![]() ? |
The crisis rocking the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) took another dimension yesterday as an unknown group in the capital city defaced the walls of the GRA residence of the former Governor of the state, Chief Segun Osoba, in Abeokuta with graffiti. The graffiti was in Yoruba and the inscriptions were derogatory to the person of the former governor. Some of the inscriptions read: ‘Osoba gba fun oga e’, ‘Osoba o ni wo tan’, ‘Osoba, gba fun SIA, SIA lamo’, ‘Osoba gba fun oga e.’ When translated in English, the graffiti means: ‘Osoba, give kudos to your superior’; ‘Osoba won’t see the end of the game’; ‘Osoba, be loyal to SIA’; ‘Osoba give to your superior.’ However, the security guard, Mr. Tunde Fasasi, said the person(s) that committed the act must have come in around 4a.m. as he was still parading the premises around 3a.m. But, the former governor said he was not bothered by any attack on him or his political career, saying the reputation he had built over a long period of time cannot be undone by smear campaign by his detractors. He prayed that God would forgive the perpetrators of the graffiti, stating that “I am used to being insulted even when I was governor in 2002. I am not disappointed, that is exactly what happened 11 years ago. For me, I have developed a thick skin. “Anything anybody says about me at the age of 75, it too late to malign my name or to destroy my reputation as an elder. All I can say is that may God continue to forgive them. We should pray for them, may God forgive them.” In reaction to the graffiti, the Special Assistant to the governor on Media, Sola Balogun, distanced the state governor from the act. He dismissed the action as a deliberate attempt by enemies of the state to destroy the governor’s name. “Senator Ibikunle Amosun cannot and did not send anybody to deface Osoba’s house. This is a tolerant governor,” Balogun said. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/osoba-s-residence-defaced-by-unknown-group/186084/ |
Tambuwal is serious about 2015 from the look of things.but the question is can tambuwal defeat GEJ in the general election? Ur guess is as good as mine |
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, had a secret meeting with the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, at his Hilltop home, Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State on Tuesday.Tambuwal who arrived the former president’s residence around 5.30pm left around 6.18pm.Our correspondent gathered that the visit might not be unconnected with the speaker’s ambition in 2015.It is being rumoured that he was nurturing a presidential ambition. However, his media aide, Mr. Imam Imam, said Tambuwal and Obasanjo only rubbed minds on the state of the nation, and how to move it forward. He said, “You know Baba is a father to all in the country. The visit was a consultation. “It is about rubbing minds on how to move the country forward, and make Nigeria better.”Asked whether the visit was in connection with Tambuwal’s alleged presidential ambition in 2015, Imam said he could not confirm that because it was a closed door meeting between Tambuwal and Obasanjo. He said, “I could not say anything on that because it was a closed door meeting. About the presidential ambition, that also I could not comment on. Let’s wait till 2015 and then we will address that.”. www.punchng.com/news/2015-tambuwal-in-secret-meeting-with-obasanjo/ |

My nightmare over — Victor Moses Chelsea winger Victor Moses is determined to put his Liverpool nightmare behind him and force his way into Jose Mourinho’s first team this season. The Nigeria international made his first appearance for Chelsea in a year when he was introduced for Azpilicueta on the hour in their 2-1 victory over Hungarian side Ferencvaros Sunday night. The 23-year-old is aiming to rebuild his career after making just six Premier League starts at Liverpool last term after being sent to Anfield on a season-long loan. He looked certain to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, but Mourinho is having second thoughts about the Nigeria international because he counts as a home grown player in the Premier League and Champions League. Moses, who played for his country at the World Cup this summer, is hoping to take the opportunity despite being linked with a loan move away and said: “There are a lot of quality players here but I will keep giving it all I have got. “I just have to forget about last season and think about this season, concentrate and keep working hard. “What happened at Liverpool – that’s football for you. It was a loan move, I wanted to play football but I unfortunately didn’t get as many games as I expected. “My fitness is getting there. It was my first pre- season game – I came back injured after the World Cup. I couldn’t join up with the lads and was just getting treatment at the training ground.” “I’m delighted I got on (against Ferencvaros) and had the minutes I had. You’re looking at three-four games before you get back to full fitness. I’m enjoying my football at the moment and will just keep working hard,” he further told London Evening Standard. The Deputy Governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji Mukhtari Shagari, who is a strong member of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), yesterday urged Northerners to vote enmaess for Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, in his second term bid as President in 2015. Doing this, he said, would instill fairness, justice and equity in the fabric of the country’s polity. The former Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, premised his argument on the fact that everyone who had the opportunity to become president of Nigeria, were given the opportunity to go for second term, adding that former Presidents Shehu Shagari, Olusegun Obasanjo, were given the same opportunity. “If the former late President, Umaru Shehu Yar’Adua were still alive, he also, would have been given the same opportunity. Why not Jonathan?”, the deputy governor asked. Shagari who granted THISDAY an interview in Abuja, said Jonathan, who is from the South-south and the people of that region have been supportive of the Northern political agenda for almost 50 years. On why he maintains such declaration, even though some elite opposed Jonathan’s second term bid, he said: “If now, the opportunity has come for us as northerners, to support the candidacy of the South- south, because one good turn deserves another, and I knew at that point in time, when I made that pronouncement, politically, it was not a popular thing to say. “We should not just vote based on popularity, we should in this country imbibe this idea of fairness, justice and equity and allow others to have opportunity when that opportunity comes around, and I still maintain that position, in that Jonathan should be given all the support that he needs to have a second term, because as far as I’m concerned there are challenges, yes, but he is doing the best that he can to make this country a better place for us.” According to him, any President, could be in the same shoe with him, regarding all the security problems, adding that Nigerians should not ask him to go based on those challenges. He said Jonathan should be given all the support that he deserves. Shagari said: “We should also understand that the problem of this country was not created by him. He inherited most of them, including the security problem. What we have to do as a nation is to come out boldly and support him to fight the insecurity that we have, and also to give the people of the South-south the opportunity to have a second term.” Thisdaylive.com |

@ zigggy44,is these related to the topic? |
Are they not corrupt or what?waku was only stated the very obvious |
The Senate Committee on Rules and Business has asked Senator Joseph Waku to retract his statement wherein he allegedly cast aspersions and insinuations of corrupt practices against its members. Chairman of the committee, Senator Ita Enang, in a statement in Abuja, said Waku who served from 1999 to 2003, allegedly claimed that he was informed by a serving Senator that “to sponsor a Bill, a Senator may have to compromise the Rules and Business Committee to get it listed.” Enang said, “For the avoidance of doubt, we are hereby calling on Senator Waku to please name such a serving Senator.” He said Waku, who left the Senate 12 years ago could not have been in a position to make any statement about the institution without being appropriately informed. He said, “We therefore demand that he retracts the statement and name the Senator. “We can boldly state that no serving Senator would hold such opinion or say same to any person concerning the rules and Business Committee. “We state that the committee under my leadership as chairman, and the Senate leadership under distinguished Sen. David Mark as Senate President has and will always maintain the highest standard of decency and fairness to all Senators. “We believe in the equality of all Senators and none will breach the privilege of the other as has been demonstrated in the Mark’s leadership thus far.” Meanwhile, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has alleged that a current edition of a news magazine had published a malicious publication against him in order to attack his 2015 ambition. Ekweremadu, in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media, Mr. Uche Anichukwu, therefore asked members of the public to ignore the publication because it was meant to discredit his performances. He said, “We are not surprised that after months of fruitless search, the peddlers of the pre-packaged fallacies and libel only ended up with an obscure and financially distressed medium, as every professionally inclined and credible medium turned down both their cocktail of lies and mouth-watering offers. “We make bold to say that it is all about 2015 and we know where it is coming from. “While more of such attacks are expected as we count down to the electoral processes, we wish to state that the said report and every other subsequent attempts to discredit the person of the Deputy President of the Senate or the numerous and laudable development projects he attracted to his constituency and Enugu State in general will continue to fail. “This is so because while you may deceive the blind that there is no oil in the soup, you cannot deceive him as to whether or not there is salt in it. “The legacies of the Deputy President of the Senate’s representation in terms of socio-economic infrastructural development, human capital development, job creation, and political empowerment are as clear as daylight. “We therefore urge our teeming supporters and admirers to treat such attacks and malicious publications as mere antics of political desperados.”What will be will be” the statement added. APC will always have something to say,I wonder what ogbeni and his APC cohort whould have said had they lost the election!congrat ogbeni it was a victory well deserved. |
Aregbesola’s acceptance speech DEMOCRATIC VICTORY OVER THE TYRANNY OF POWER After an unnecessarily tense, tortuous and even traumatic process, the Independent National Electoral Commission this morning declared me as the winner of the Osun state governorship election on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC). On behalf of my party, we are delighted to claim victory for our hard work, focus and dedication in this election. I thank the Almighty God for our triumph at the polls, against all odds. To the good people of Osun State goes our unflinching gratitude. We salute your steadfastness, courage, loyalty, commitment and fierce determination to defend your sovereign rights. You have demonstrated in this election that in a democracy, power truly belongs to the people. I am humbled and honoured by your trust and abiding faith in me and my party. I pledge that your confidence in us shall never be betrayed or taken for granted. Ordinarily, this should be a moment of joy and celebration consequent upon the hard earned triumph of the people’s will. However, this election shows that democracy is still gravely endangered in Nigeria. We witnessed gross abuse of power and, of due process before, during, and even after the actual voting process. It is so sad and unfortunate that what should be a normal, routine process was maliciously allowed to snowball in to a needless virtual war by the Federal Government and the PDP. Osun state was unduly militarized in an unprecedented manner through criminal intimidation and psychological assault on our people. This election witnessed an abuse of our security agencies and amounted to a corruption of their professional ethics and integrity. The security agencies were unprofessionally utilized in Osun state to harass, intimidate and oppress the people whose taxes are used to pay their salaries and provide their arms. Hundreds of leaders, supporters, sympathizers and agents of our party were arrested and detained. Also, hundreds of other innocent citizens including women and the aged were harassed, brutalized and traumatized. In spite of this condemnable repression and abuse of human rights, the unflagging spirit of our people triumphed. Our victory is due to the steadfastness and resolute determination of our people to assert and defend their rights. The PDP obviously did all it could in a most desperate manner to steal the people’s mandate. A critical analysis of the elections shows a trend of general low voter turnout largely because of the atmosphere of deliberate tyranny and fear caused by the excessive militarization of the state. Despite our victory, it is pertinent to condemn and also point out the fact that the number of accredited voters in most local governments was less than half of registered voters. Against this trend, it is curious that the bulk of Senator the PDP votes came from only four Local Governments- namely Ife Central, Ife East, Ife North and Ife South. This suggests an inexplicable large turnout in his stronghold which is a curious departure from the general trend of voting across the state. The outcome of this election, once again, shows the unswerving determination of our people to ensure that democracy triumphs in Nigeria. We have sent a strong signal to all and sundry that no might is powerful enough to thwart the will of the people. This should always strengthen our resolve to ensure that as from now on, every vote must not only be counted but must count in this country. Nobody or party must ever exercise power unreasonably at any level except in accordance with the will of the people to whom sovereignty belongs. Let me assure the good people of Osun state that I appreciate that this victory is a reward for our hard work and commitment to the welfare of our people. I promise that we shall not rest on our oars but shall be spurred to work even harder with all well meaning people of the State of Osun and the generality of Nigerians to continue to enjoy your trust and support. You can be assured that we will leave no stone unturned in our continued effort to transform Osun into a land of progress, prosperity and peace for all with renewed fervour. I realize that this victory and the challenges we went through is a call to greater service and sustained commitment to our people. I pledge a rededication of myself to the service of our people and the strengthening of democratic values in Osun and Nigeria generally. Our country remains in political bondage and we must set her free. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. www.thenationonlineng.net |

Why all these arguments.... If the appeal court had upheld the high court ruling, won't al mustapha appeal the ruling at the supreme court?
