Politics / OYETOLA/AREGBESOLA: Oyinlola Calls For Calm by YEAEMEDIA(f): 12:33pm On Nov 25, 2020
A former governor of Osun State, *Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola* has called for calm in the state following the tension generated by reports that ex-Governor Rauf Aregbesola plans to hold a political programme parallel to the incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola's second anniversary celebrations on Friday, 27 November, 2020.

Prince Oyinlola, in a statement on Wednesday said he noted Aregbesola's explanation that he was coming to the state to engage with the people on the EndSARS crisis as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari but advised that the Interior Minister could do that on another day.

"It is necessary that I put my own experience on record.  I took over from Chief Bisi Akande in May 2003 and, I can say that throughout my almost eight years in government, and despite our political differences, Akande never gave me any problem. It is common knowledge that Mr Aregbesola took over from me, and, despite the circumstances of his coming to that office, I did not do anything to undermine his authority throughout his eight years in government. That is the spirit with which I appeal that the Interior Minister (Aregbesola) avoid doing anything that will suggest a plan to make the state ungovernable for Mr Oyetola.

"As a former governor of that state, I plead that we give peace a chance. The state has witnessed enough unnecessary crises in recent weeks coupled with the Coronavirus pandemic which has upended people's economy and general wellbeing. Our people are suffering; they deserve a respite from all forms of crises as they struggle to make ends meet.

"All of us former governors, as leaders of our people, we all have a stake in making Osun State to work for the good of our people who have had to deal with one hardship or the other. We will be seen as doing that when we avoid making the job of the incumbent governor difficult for him. May God help our state and its people in this difficult time," Prince Oyinlola said.

He also counseled Governor Oyetola to, at all times, let the welfare and wellbeing of the people remain his priority as he crosses over to the second half of his term.

Crime / Four Nigerians Charged In Scam Scheme Targeting Elderly In United States by YEAEMEDIA(f): 11:53am On Nov 25, 2020
Prosecutors in Tarrant County have charged four people, including a former prison guard, in an alleged scheme to con elderly victims out of millions of dollars and launder the money to ringleaders in Africa.

One of the suspects was stopped at DFW International Airport last month as he planned to board a plane for Nigeria with wads of cash, according to court documents. Investigators obtained a photo from his email showing hundred-dollar bills concealed in socks and other clothing, they said.

Elderly victims across the country were targeted in various scams, including widowers who were seeking relationships on online dating sites, prosecutors said.

Police in Colleyville led the investigation with help from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Postal Inspectors, prosecutors said.

The probe started after FedEx in Grand Prairie alerted detectives about suspicious shipments of cash, according to search warrants reviewed by NBC 5.

The suspects are charged with engaging in organized crime and theft.

One of them, Olusegun Odunwole, 33, was employed for five years as a prison guard by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He resigned after he was charged last year, the agency said.

More charges are possible, assistant Tarrant County district attorney Lori Varnell said.

Odunwole’s attorney, Samuel R. Terry, did not respond to a request for comment.

An attorney for another defendant, Saheed-Olukayode Akinyemi, 31, said prosecutors haven’t proven anything yet.

“Certainly my client is presumed to be innocent as it stands right now and we look forward to seeing what evidence the state believes it has and addressing them in court,” said attorney, Benson Varghese.

Dominick Marsala, an attorney for Ifeanyichukwu-Festus Obi, 40, emailed a short statement.

“While targeting elderly people for any nefarious purpose is obviously egregious, under the laws of our country, my client has the presumption of innocence,” he said.

Wes Ball, an attorney for Obianuju Orakposim, 40, said his client may be a victim of the scheme.

“She may have been a victim of these scam artists and got sucked into this thing,” Ball said. “It remains to be seen how this shakes out. She has the presumption of innocence.”

Some Ghanaian youths have reportedly helped a man to regain his strength for round two of beatings after being beaten over a suspected case of theft.

According to reports, some young men in Takoradi, Ghana gave an energy drink to the thief so he can regain himself to receive another round of beating.

An eyewitness who shared the story online said the hoodlum was caught right in the act of stealing.

Instead of handing him over to the Police, the area boys took the matter into their hands and gave him the beating of his life.

Noticing that he’s weak from the beatings, the thief was given Rush Energy to recover so that the beatings can resume.

The eyewitness posted a photo of the moment the alleged thief was seen taking the energy drink as youths surrounded him.

The picture had an inscription which read;

”Welcome to Takoradi Ghana, where subsequent to beating a criminal, we offer him a container of surge caffeinated drink so we can beat him once more. You perceive how kind we are. No spot like Taadi”.
Politics / Endsars: Osun Judicial Panel Of Inquiry Hears Three Petitions by YEAEMEDIA(f): 6:49pm On Nov 14, 2020
The State of Osun Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality on Saturday heard three different petitions filed by members of the public against the brutality of the men and officers of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The panel also granted adjournments to the petitioners and respondents in line with their request to ensure fair hearing.

The panel disclosed that it had received another petition, making the petitions before it to be six.

The panel said more petitions were underway.

This is even as a member of the EndSARS protesters, Comrade Adebisi Emmanuel, expressed satisfaction in the hearing process of the panel so far.

The Osun Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality, Human Rights Violations and Related Extra Judicial Killings was inaugurated by Governor Adegboyega Oyetola in October 2020 to investigate and unravel all matters relating to police brutality and misconducts with a mandate to come up with recommendations within six months.

In line with the directive, the panel last Thursday commenced its sitting after the admission of five different petitions.

Addressing the journalists shortly after the court session, the Chairman of the Panel retired Justice Akin Oladimeji, said the court had heard three petitions and granted adjournments to both petitioners and respondents based on the circumstances around the petitions.

He said the decision to grant the adjournment was to ensure fair hearing for all parties involved and to strengthen judicial process for justice and equity.

Oladimeji who reiterated the avowed commitment of the panel to justify the confidence reposed in it and deliver on the mandate given to it, said the Panel had begun in full capacity to dispense justice and propose appropriate recommendations to the government after the whole exercise.

He stated further, “We had only three cases today and none of them was heard because they didn’t give evidence to any of the cases. The lawyers sought for adjournment but in the special circumstances of the application, all the petitions had to be adjourned. So, we adjourned the petitions to another dates”.

As to why the Panel granted adjournments to all the cases heard, the Chairman of the Panel said, it is the constitutional right of the petitioner to be given fair hearing in line with the constitutional provisions.

According to him, the provision of the Constitution says, “everyone must be given the opportunity to be heard. If there are special reasons for the cases to be adjourned, they must be adjourned”.

He added: “In the inaugural address that I made, I said no party would enjoy more than two adjournments. In the circumstances, everyone that was given adjournment today has only one more chance of adjournment in their respective cases. It is the fundamental law of the land that they must he given the opportunity to be heard.

“We granted the adjournment because some of them had not been served for instance in the last case we attended to today. The respondents are not residing here in Osun, but in Ogun State.

“Though the incident happened here in Osun, the policemen involved are in Ogun State. So, we have to give an order that Ogun State and Osun State Commissioners of Police and the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, be served with the petitions and all the documents filed by the petitioners”.

Oladimeji who expressed satisfaction on the pace of the hearings, said the panel would continue to work hard and deliver on its mandate to complete everything within the stipulated time.

“Before the sitting, we received five petitions. All of them had been enlisted, and as we speak, we have received more. In fact, one was submitted this morning and it has been filed.

“As for us, we are not going to waste time. We shall attend to every petition as it comes because time wasting is not in my character”, he said.

One of the EndSARS protesters, Comrade Adebisi Emmanuel, expressed satisfaction with the process of the hearing since its commencement.

He expressed confidence in the ability of the Panel to ensure fair hearing and justice at the end of the whole exercise.

Emmanuel appealed to the residents of the State, particularly those that had experienced brutality and injustice at the hands of the police to summon courage to file their petitions and forward same to the panel.

Politics / UK, US, Canada Urged To Place Visa Ban On Osun Government by YEAEMEDIA(f): 6:24pm On Nov 14, 2020
A human right activist, Olawale Adebayo Bakare, popularly called ‘Mandate’, has called for visa ban on Governor Adegboyega Oyetola to the United Kingdom, United State of America and Canada, for alleged use of force and abuse of power.

Bakare concerned indigene of Osun state, Olawale Adebayo Bakare (Mandate), Bakare in a statement issued as a concerned indigene of Osun state on Saturday and made available to newsmen, said the governor deserved to be banned from traveling abroad for his ‘tyrannic style of leadership.

He alleged that the governor employed and sponsored hoodlums to disperse peaceful protest of youths that are agitating for abolition of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.

According to Bakare, the intervention of Governor Oyetola led to the death of two protesters, Lateef Mutiu aka Fresh and Halimi Ahmed Olamilekan.
He alleged that Oyetola bribed two families of the deceased with N500,000 (less than $1,400/£1,200) each.

‘Mr Mutiu Lateef and Ahmed Olamilekan are among the peaceful protesters who were shot multiple times at the back and other places that clearly suggest they were running for their lives and they were never a threat to the killer, but unfortunately both of them could not survive the gruesome attack and died painfully.

“The incessant attacks on critics and peaceful agitators, the gross violation of human rights, and the undemocratic and violent tendencies of the desperate Gboyega Oyetola- led administration to repress dissidents should not be overlooked and left unchecked.

“We hereby humbly request for the immediate Visa ban on the governor of Osun State Alh. Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola, as a way to curb his despotic and tyrannical style of leadership, overmilitarising the state through excessive use of force and abuse of power,” he added.
