Nairaland GeneralAPC Accuses PDP Of Sponsoring Niger Delta Avengers by Yeah55(op): 3:51pm On Jun 04, 2016
The All Progressives Congress has accused the opposition Peoples Democratic Party of sponsoring the new militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers, to launch series of attacks against oil pipelines in the Niger Delta.

The South South zone of the APC, in a meeting held in Benin City, Edo State, on Friday, condemned the renewed militant attacks in the region, and said the main objective of the Niger Delta Avengers was to frustrate and derail President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
“The zone is cocksure that the nefarious and ruinous activities of the ‘Avengers’ are not driven by any patriotic and altruistic impulse,” the APC said in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting.
“We have compelling reasons to strongly assert that these activities are sponsored and instigated by the opposition PDP to derail and frustrate the APC government of President Muhammadu Buhari because of its determination to fight against corruption, stabilise and put our country on the path of sustainable development.”

The communiqué, signed by the APC National Vice-Chairman South South, Hilliard Eta, and the Zonal Secretary, Steven Ezekwem, also rejected the inclusion of the Niger Delta region in the “imaginary State of Biafra”.
The party, which described the inclusion as “dubious”, said, “Niger Delta is not, cannot and will never be part of Biafra.”

The party commended Mr. Buhari and the APC-led national government for the courage to commence the clean-up of Ogoniland and other parts of Niger Delta.
It called on the federal government to reconstitute the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission to reflect and accommodate all the constituent states of the region, as well as carry along the party leaders from the zone in appointments into federal boards and other executive positions.

Nairaland GeneralShocking: 24 Years Old Man Rapes 4 Years Old Child, Damages Sex Organ. by Yeah55(op): 12:53pm On May 20, 2016
A four year old girl has been serially raped by a 24 year old man, Haruna Tukur, leaving her private organs severely damaged .

Haruna Tukur, the rapist was earlier detained in Malali Police Station in Kaduna, was later granted bail.
He still went back and raped the little girl again after he was released.
The girl, Fatima Alhassan, according to her mother, has been raped several times by the same boy before they (the parents) found out.
"He has been tailing her whenever she is going to an Islamic school. He will buy Maltonic, egg and bring it to the little girl in a school close to a grave yard. He will call her to the toilet after he finish what he want to do with her, he will ask her to excrete. He will drug her so that whenever she comes home, she will be sleeping ," a resident of the area said.
Pulse gathered that the whole issue started two days before last Sallah festival when the mother observed that the four year old baby girl came back home crying.
"She was crying and complained about pains in her private parts. We took her to the hospital but the nurses said she might be suffering from pile which used to affect the entire private parts. She was placed on drugs. After sometimes, we returned to the hospital but the nurses said her file was misplaced ," the mother said.
According to her, " few days later, my daughter returned home from the school and it was very obvious that she has been rapped ."
"We asked her to tell us the truth. The little girl said that every day, on her way to the Islamic school, a man will follow her and do things to her. That the man will hold a knife and warn her that if she ever inform anyone about what he is doing to her, he will kill her, kill her father and mother ," the mother said adding that her husband was afraid to report the matter to the police because he was poor.
The identity of the boy was later discovered and the issue was reported to his parents who pleaded that the matter should not be reported at the police station.
"They listened to the parents’ plea and decided to take the little baby out of the area. The 24 year old still followed the little girl and raped her again," a lady following the case, Muneerat Abdulsalam told Pulse.
The four year old girl was ill during lessons last Tuesday. Her teacher asked her to go home. She could barely walk but still managed to each home.
"Immediately her mum saw her, she knew what had happened and asked her to remove her cloths and the girl private part was completely damaged ," Muneerat Abdulsalam said adding that the four year old baby girl private part has been battered.
"The boy was in police custody but when taken to court, he was allowed to go. The police are not giving any details concerning why he was allow to go. When he came out from the police cell, he still raped her again. We want justice to be done ," Muneerat added.
The police in Kaduna are yet to issue an official statement concerning the rape case. Police spokesman in Kaduna,
Zubairu Abubakar could not return calls as at the time of filling this report.

Nairaland GeneralWhy Are Carrots Orange?. Find Out! by Yeah55(op): 9:44am On May 11, 2016
Scientists unveiled Monday the gene in carrots that gives rise to carotenoids, a critical source of Vitamin A and the pigment that turns some fruits and vegetables bright orange or red.

Unpoetical dubbed DCAR_032551, the star gene emerged from the first complete decoding of the carrot genome, published in the scientific journal Nature Genetics.
“Vitamin A deficiency is a global health challenge,” the study pointed out.
“Its plentiful carotenoids make carrot an important source of provitamin A in the human diet.”
Carotenoids were first discovered in carrots (hence the name), but which among the vegetable’s newly tallied 32,115 genes was most responsible for their formation remained a mystery.

Daucus carota (the Latin name) now joins a select club of about a dozen veggies — including the potato, cucumber, tomato and pepper — whose complete genomes have been sequenced.
Laying bare the humble carrot’s genetic secrets will make it easier to enhance disease resistence and nutritive value in other species, the researchers said.

Having identified the mechanism controlling the accumulation of carotenoid, it may be possible — through gene-editing, for example — to import it to other staple root vegetables such as the cassava, native to South American and widely grown in Africa.
“These results will facilitate biological discovery and crop improvement in carrots and other crops,” said Philipp Simon, senior author and a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Among vegetables spinach and peas are widely associated with growing up strong, but it’s hard to beat the carrot when it comes to health boosters.
Carrots are loaded with beta-carotene, a natural chemical that the body can transform into Vitamin A.

The deeper the orange colour, the more beta-carotene.
Vitamin A is essential for normal growth and development, the proper functioning of the immune system, and vision.

Carotenoids are also antioxidants, which are thought to protect against heart disease and some forms of cancer by neutralising so-called “free radicals”, single oxygen atoms that can damage cells.
“Some of these compounds can prevent disease,” Simon told AFP.
Interestingly, carrots — along with many other plants — have about 20 percent more genes than humans.

Looking back at the plant’s family tree, scientists have been able to determine that it split with the grape about 113 million years ago and from the kiwi about 10 million years after that, when dinosaurs still lorded over the planet.

Originally white, the wild ancestors of the carrot likely came from central Asia.
Global crop production of the root has quadrupled in the last 40 years and is today eaten everywhere in the world.

There are currently no genetically modified carrots on the international market.

Nairaland GeneralThere Will Be No Biafra Under Me - Buhari by Yeah55(op): 1:59pm On May 10, 2016
Abuja - President Muhammadu Buhari has declared that he will crush all agitation for the division of Nigeria, Sun News Online reports.

While paying a visit to his hometown of Daura, Buhari reflected on the civil war that had previously claimed over 2 million lives in the country, stating that unity was fought for through the shedding of Nigerian blood.

Criticizing efforts made by agitation groups such as the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Buhari warned that it would be better for the whole country to commit mass murder than to allow Biafrans to succeed in their plans of seperation.

“For Nigeria to divide now, it is better for all of us to jump into the sea and get drowned,” Buhari said.

IPOB had previously issued a threat to Buhari in response to his previous anti-Biafra sentiments, declaring that they would restore Biafra or die in the process.
"We, the IPOB Worldwide have decided not to go back on the quest for restoration of Biafra. Nigeria is not bigger than USSR just as Buhari is not stronger than Michael Gobachev. Buhari can kill Biafrans as he did during the 1967 to 1970 civil war, but this time, it will not be the same," News24 reported the group as saying.

Nairaland GeneralFive Die As P’harcourt NPA Warehouse Collapses by Yeah55(op): 9:43am On May 09, 2016
AT least, five persons were feared killed when a warehouse in Area A of the Nigerian Ports Authority in Port Harcourt collapsed.
The incident, which happened at about 5pm on Saturday, was said to have caused confusion within the NPA in the Rivers State.
It was learnt that the warehouse was an old facility used in storing Dangote salt.
An NPA worker told our correspondent that five persons were found in the rubble after a search was conducted a few minutes after the collapse.
“It happened yesterday (Saturday) around 5pm and five persons, who were trapped in the rubble, were found dead,” the source said.
Another source, who is also a worker in the NPA, Area A, explained that those affected as a result of the incident were not inside the warehouse when the walls caved in.
The source, who preferred not to be named, pointed out that the walls fell and affected the bathroom and toilet close to the warehouse.
“Those that died were around the bathroom and toilet area and the walls that fell affected them. Their bodies were found when the people began to open up blocks and search the rubble,” the source added.
Several efforts made to speak with any official of the NPA in Port Harcourt proved futile.

Nairaland GeneralHerdsmen Strike Again, Kill 12. by Yeah55(op): 9:51am On May 08, 2016
People suspected to be herdsmen, yesterday, attacked Coromo and two other villages in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State, killing about 12 persons and wounding about 18 others seriously. Local sources said those killed included seven men, two women and children, while 13 houses were burnt.
Information about the attack was sketchy, last night, but it was said that the herdsmen launched the attack following a long standing land dispute over farm lands. The herdsmen reportedly stormed the town in the night and started attacking Tivs who had come back to farm on their lands. It was said that hundreds of the natives fled to neighbouring villages while others ran to the Gassol B Police Divisional headquarters for their safety.
Efforts to speak with Taraba State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joseph Kwaji, were fruitless as he did not pick calls to his mobile telephone, but sources at the police headquarters confirmed the incident, saying that armed policemen had been dispatched to the affected communities to maintain peace. The Taraba incident came on the heels of the massacre by suspected herdsmen in an Enugu suburb which triggered outrage.
Before then, there had been reported attacks by suspected herdsmen across the country.
Meanwhile, in an interview with
Sunday Vanguard, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, said herdsmen had lived with the people across the country for decades, hinting that those behind recent killings could have been foreigners.
Specifically, Arase said the killers could have been armed men displaced from their countries by the Libya and Mali crises.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Messi, Ronaldo & Ribery For UEFA Best Player Award 2012/2013 by Yeah55(m): 7:08pm On Aug 07, 2013
Easyfren: Messi was outstanding in both La liga and CL in spite of 7-0 aggregate humiliation by Bayern. Ribery was a class for Bayern in all competitions reminding me of stylish and elegant playing days of Zidaine. Ronaldo's contribution was invaluable in Real's campaign and Euro 2012 for Portugal. It's going to be a battle between Messi and Ribery.
Real Madrid vs Manchester United.
