Health / Children Warned To Not Listen To Music For More Than One Hour A Day by yebuju: 1:24pm On Feb 28, 2015
Teenagers and young adults should listen to music on headphones for no more than one hour per day, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said.

The global health authority has warned that 1.1 billion 12 to 35-year-olds are at risk of hearing loss because of “unsafe use” of personal audio devices including smartphones, as well as exposure to damaging levels of sounds in nightclubs, bars and at sporting events.

Nearly half of all young people in middle and high income countries were putting themselves at risk of tinnitus and, in extreme cases, irreversible hearing loss, they said.

Exposure to 100 decibels (dB) for 15 minutes is classified as unsafe, as is 85dB for eight hours. The maximum volume on some music players, as well as noise levels in clubs, often exceed 100dB while 85dB is close to the noise level in a moving car.

The WHO recommended limiting the use of personal music players, and wearing earplugs when visiting noisy venues.

“As they go about their daily lives doing what they enjoy, more and more young people are placing themselves at risk of hearing loss,” said Dr Etienne Krug, WHO director for injury prevention said. “They should be aware that once you lose your hearing, it won’t come back. Taking simple preventative actions will allow people to continue to enjoy themselves without putting their hearing at risk.”

Noise levels in the workplace should not exceed 85dB, the WHO said, and those who work in nightclubs and at sporting events should take particular caution.

Wow. This is a testament to the resilience and never say die spirit of the Americans. They have been able to come together, confront their enemies, rise above their differences and make something good come out of a horrific incident. It is interesting that they are even building at least three towers instead of the two that was destroyed.
If it were to be in Nigeria, 13 yrs after different committee will still be sitting and submitting report on the terrorist attack. APC and PDP will still be fighting on whether to build another tower or not. Infact the contractor handling the rebuilding would have embezzled the money and abandoned the project.grin
No even talk about dis kind situation in Nigeria. Those guys are far far ahead of us.....

Foreign Affairs / World Trade Center Reopens For Business 13 Years After 9/11 Devastation by yebuju: 2:56pm On Nov 03, 2014
Thirteen years after the 9/11 terrorist attack, World Trade Center is opening for business again.

Conde Nast will start moving Monday into One World Trade Center, a 104-story, $3.9 billion skyscraper that dominates the Manhattan skyline.

It's the centerpiece of the 16-acre site where the decimated twin towers once stood and where more than 2,700 people died on Sept. 11, 2001, buried under smoking mounds of fiery debris.

"The New York City skyline is whole again, as One World Trade Center takes its place in Lower Manhattan," said Patrick Foye, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey that owns both the building and the World Trade Center site.

He said One World Trade Center "sets new standards of design, construction, prestige and sustainability; the opening of this iconic building is a major milestone in the transformation of Lower Manhattan into a thriving 24/7 neighborhood."

With the construction fences gone, America’s tallest building is considered by Conde Nast CEO Chuck Townsend as the, “most secure office building in America.”

About 3,000 employees will join the 170 expected to move in Monday in 2015. The publishing giants will take over five floors of the building.

The building is 60 percent leased, with another 80,000 square feet going to the advertising firm Kids Creative, the stadium operator Legends Hospitality, the BMB Group investment adviser, and Servcorp, a provider of executive offices.

The tower overlooks the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Its aim is to honor those who died in the terrorist attacks.

For years, the grisly pit where workers found mostly body parts was dubbed the "ground zero" of the aerial terror attack.

At night, the incandescent steel-and-glass behemoth can be seen from vessels in New York Harbor approaching Manhattan.

Soon, an observation deck will be open to the public.

The eight-year construction of the 1,776-foot high skyscraper came after years of political, financial and legal infighting that threatened to derail the project.

The bickering slowly died down as two other towers started going up on the southeast end of the site: the now completed 4 World Trade Center whose anchor tenant is the Port Authority, and 3 World Trade Center that's slowly rising.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Business / After 13 Years, World Trade Center Reopens For Business by yebuju: 2:23pm On Nov 03, 2014
NEW YORK (AP) — Thirteen years after the 9/11 terrorist attack, the resurrected World Trade Center is again opening for business — marking an emotional milestone for both New Yorkers and the United States as a whole.

Publishing giant Conde Nast will start moving Monday into One World Trade Center, a 104-story, $3.9 billion skyscraper that dominates the Manhattan skyline. It is America's tallest building.

With construction fences gone and boxes of office equipment in place, Conde Nast CEO Chuck Townsend planned to walk Monday into what Foye calls "the most secure office building in America."

Only about 170 of his company's 3,400 employees are moving in now, filling five floors of the tower, said Patricia Rockenwagner, a Conde Nast vice president and spokeswoman. About 3,000 more will arrive by early 2015.

The building is 60-percent leased, with another 80,000 square feet (7,400 sqare meters) going to the advertising firm Kids Creative, the stadium operator Legends Hospitality, the BMB Group investment adviser, and Servcorp, a provider of executive offices.

The government's General Services Administration signed up for 275,000 square feet (25,000 square meters), and the China Center, a trade and cultural facility, will cover 191,000 square feet (18,000 square meters).

From the northeast corner of the site, the tower overlooks the National September 11 Memorial & Museum built in the footprints of the twin towers. Its stated aim is to honor those who perished on that sunny September morning.

For years, the grisly pit where workers found mostly body parts was dubbed the "ground zero" of the aerial terror attack.

Now, the illuminated spire of One World Trade Center serves as a beacon to planes that fly over the city, seemingly at eye level with the high rise's open rooftop. The view stretches from Manhattan to the Statue of Liberty into New Jersey and Connecticut and all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

At night, the incandescent steel-and-glass behemoth can be seen from vessels in New York Harbor approaching Manhattan.

An observation deck eventually will be open to the public.

The eight-year construction of the 1,776-foot (541-meter) -high skyscraper came after years of political, financial and legal infighting that threatened to derail the project.

The bickering slowly died down as two other towers started going up on the southeast end of the site: the now completed 4 World Trade Center whose anchor tenant is the Port Authority, and 3 World Trade Center that's slowly rising.

The spirit of renewal did not quash memories of the horrific act of terror, but the area has prospered in recent years beyond anyone's imagination. About 60,000 more residents now live there — three times more than before 9/11 — keeping streets, restaurants and shops alive even after Wall Street and other offices close for the day.

Still, it's a bittersweet victory, one achieved with the past in mind as the architects created One World Trade Center.

T.J. Gottesdiener of the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill firm that produced the final design told The Associated Press that the high-rise was built with steel-reinforced concrete that makes it as terror attack-proof as possible.

He said the firm went beyond the city's existing building codes to achieve that.

"We did it, we finally did it," he said.

Nairaland / General / 5 Awesome Things Apple’s New Iphone 6 Is Rumored To Have by yebuju: 6:04pm On Aug 30, 2014
It’s Apple devotees’ favorite time of the year again.

Apple appears set to roll out its new iPhone this month, with a planned September 9 event likely to mark the unveiling of the fabled iPhone 6. Just like unicorns or Tupac, we can’t be absolutely sure what features the new iPhone 6 will have. But the rumors have been flying thick and fast, and expectations are high.

Here are some of features strongly rumored to be on the new iPhone 6.

A Model With a Bigger Screen.

Some Apple critics have compared the iPhone 5’s puny 4-inch screen unfavorably to Samsung’s flagship phones, like the Galaxy S5, which has a 5.1-inch screen. The iPhone 6 is expected to silence the complainers, with one iPhone 6 model rumored to have a 5.5-inch screen, which is quite a big jump in size. A second model may have a 4.7-inch display, which is also a pretty big increase, and certainly much larger than the comparatively minuscule iPhone 4 display, which was a mere 3.5 inches.

Near Field Communication (NFC).

Near Field Communication is essentially a way to wirelessly connect devices over a very short range. The Financial Times reported Friday that Apple is working with a Dutch chipmaker to add NFC capabilities to the new iPhone, opening up the possibility of mobile, pay-by-touch payments and open other potential applications.

Mobile Payments.

The iPhone 6’s purported NFC capabilities will mean Apple could turn the iPhone into a mobile wallet, allowing users to pay for goods and services with a swipe of the phone. Apple is reportedly holding talks with credit card companies and banks on the effort, and thanks to Apple’s massive database of financial data it’s collected through the App Store and iTunes, this could be push mobile payments into the mainstream.

Sapphire Glass.

One of the biggest complaints with the iPhone and other smartphones is that they’re pretty fragile devices, considering how often we use them and how expensive they can be — and there are few things uglier than a cracked iPhone display. Well, Apple is developing synthetic sapphire at its new facility in Arizona, the Wall Street Journal reports, a harder and more expensive material that can replace glass. And if this can be believed, sapphire is remarkably resilient. Plus, Apple already used sapphire in smart parts of the iPhone 5 (over the camera lens) and in the iPhone 5S (for the home button/fingerprint scanner).

iOS 8.

Apple’s new operating system is one of the few things we do know a lot about, and it’s official information from Apple this time. For instance, we know that Apple is rolling out a new HealthKit app as part of iOS 8 that allows users to keep track of their personal health and fitness data, which also pulls in data from other sources like Nike+ apps and health institutions. We also know that iOS 8 allows you to share apps, music and books purchased with the same credit card with your family, as well as save photos, video and documents to iCloud. The camera software will have a shot timer and other improvements, and group messaging will be more versatile: you can now add or drop someone from a conversation, finally.
