after my Degree, and if I venture into a Business

A former Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, says former President Goodluck Jonathan did not cause the defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last general elections.

He said rather, the PDP’s loss was caused by the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and the card readers used for the elections.



Okupe said this in a Facebook post on Sunday while responding to the claims by the PDP’s National Conference Organising Committee that fielding former President Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate caused the defeat of the party.

The former presidential spokesman said that being an incumbent President gave Jonathan an automatic right to be the party’s presidential candidate.

He said, “That Jonathan was an error is in itself a grand fallacy which totally undermines the whole truth about the sanctity and correctness of the wisdom of the PDP National Executive Committee which made and ratified that decision.

“All over the world when an incumbent signifies an intention for a second term, it is customary that the established machinery of the party wholly backs and gratifies such an intention.

“If any error was made, it was firstly the failure of the PDP administration to sack the unfair and compromised electoral officer who was allowed to conduct the election in spite of his obvious and profuse partisanship.

“The second error was the inexplicable acquiescence of the PDP government to the use of the infamous card reader which was skillfully manipulated to the disadvantage of the PDP presidential candidate.”

Okupe said Jonathan was too good to be the candidate of the PDP. He said if Jonathan had acted like the typical sit-tight African President, the PDP would still be in power.

He said, “The third error of the PDP was to have fielded a good, God-fearing and patriotic man, who in spite of his enormous power, the avalanche of deployable arsenal of war at his disposal, transformed himself to be the victim and refused to fight so that his countrymen may live and his nation survived. The situation in Burundi today is highly instructive.”

The former Presidential aide maintained that history would be kind to Jonathan for his act of conceding defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said if fielding Jonathan was an error, it would be an error which posterity would cherish

Okupe added, “Certainly, history will treat Goodluck Jonathan as one of the greatest heroes of this generation of African leaders; definitely not an error by any stretch of the imagination.”

A Russian plane carrying more than 200 passengers has crashed in Egypt.
The plane, which was carrying the passengers from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, crashed in Central Sinai, killing all of those on board.
The jet, said to be operated by the Russian company, Kogalymavia and branded ‘Metrojet’, had been reported as “completely destroyed with all on board likely to have died,” according to a security officer from the search and rescue team.
The Islamic State had said it was responsible for the crash, claiming that it shut the plane down through the Aamaq website, which serves as a semi-official news agency for IS.
“The fighters of the Islamic State were able to down a Russian plane over Sinai province that was carrying over 220 Russian crusaders. They were all killed, thanks be to God,” the statement circulated on Twitter said.
Destined for St Petersburg, the plane was carrying 224 people, including 17 children and seven crew members.
Egypt’s health ministry said it had dispatched 45 ambulances to the scene to “evacuate the dead and wounded,” which indicated the possibility of survivors.
Northern Sinai is home to groups of Islamist militants, many affiliated to Islamic State.
A statement from the Egyptian prime minister’s office said a cabinet-level crisis committee had been formed to deal with the crash, which was believed to have been caused by a mechanical failure.
