Leadership of Small and Mediun Scale Computer Entrepreneurs and Artisans Association of Nigeria (SCEAAN), Ogun State chapter , yesterday, protested the alleged exclusion from online registration for Joint Matriculation Examination Board (JAMB). President of the group, Deji Babajide, who was flanked by other members of the executive, including Murphy Azeez, Rev. Wole Falusi, and Mrs Temitayo Adrienne, disclosed that over 20,000 business centres, computer cafe have been excluded from the online registration. Babajide while addressing newsmen in Abeokuta, noted that centralising online registration of the unified examinations would deprive a number of candidates of the opportunity to get registered for the examinations. He said Candidates residing in riverine communities and hard to reach locations are currently facing difficulty in accessing the few CBT centres located far away from their base. “JAMB collected a refundable of N10,000 caution fee from each cafe in 2011 so as to be able to register students on its website. Another N10,000 caution fee was collected in 2013 amounting to over a hundred million naira. Up till date, the amount has not been refunded.” The group noted that last year, JAMB replaced over 5600 names of small computer businesses/ cafes on the websites with that of some selected CBT centres where students usually seat for computer-based examinations. Consequently, the group is calling on the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde to rescind the ongoing policy and decentralise online registration of the examinations as a matter of national interest. The SCEAAN officials charge JAMB to pay CBT centres more having increased the cost of its forms www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/protest-in-abeokuta-over-alleged-exclusion-from-jamb-online-registration/ |

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) on Thursday closed down the depots of Total Nigeria Plc, Dee Jones Limited and Eterna Oil Plc in Ibafon area of Lagos for hoarding over 46 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise called petrol. The agency has also debunked the claims by marketers that there was scarcity of petrol and blamed the tight supply situation on depot owners, who hoard products, thus causing panic buying. While Total and Eterna Oil were hoarding 13.6 million litres each, when DPR’s surveillance monitoring team visited the depot of Dee Jones which was hoarding about 19.5 million litres. However, the General Manager of Dee Jones, Mr. Willy Ikeora, denied that the company was hoarding the product in its depot, stressing that they were loading but not as fast as expected by DPR. The regulatory authority also queried Ascon Oil and ordered the management of the company to appear at the agency’s head office by 3pm yesterday and explain why the company should not be sanctioned for its slow pace of loading tankers, despite the availability of eight million litres in its depot. Integrated Oil and Gas Limited was also directed to speed up the loading process as the company had up to 10.2 million litres of petrol when the agency’s surveillance monitoring team paid an unscheduled visit to the facility. An official of Integrated Oil, who spoke to THISDAY, however stated that they were loading the product slowly so as not to exhaust the available stock as the company was not given import allocation for the fourth quarter 2015 by the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA). “In the third quarter 2015, we were given allocation to import 60,000 metric tonnes but we imported 62,000 metric tonnes. It means that our performance was very satisfactory. But can you imagine that despite our performance, a big company like us was not given any allocation in the fourth quarter? If we don’t import product, how will we remain in business and pay salaries? Do they want us to load out the remaining product quickly and close down our depot? That is the situation,” said the official. Addressing journalists during the inspection, the Director of DPR, Mr. Mordecai Danteni Baba Ladan, stated that the sealed depots would pay a fine of N2 million each, while the others should explain why they were loading at very slow pace. “This exercise was embarked upon because of the impression the general public has about product supply and distribution. We have been inundated with a lot of enquiries on the right situation and we have been telling the public that the people should not engage in panic buying because records at our disposal indicate that we have enough of this product. As at yesterday nationwide, we had in stock almost over 300 million litres. In the Lagos storage area, we have over 220 million litres,” Ladan said. “So today, we have decided to come and see things for ourselves and as you can see, we have visited about four different depots now and these products are really in stock. Where we are now, you can see that they have 13 million litres in storage but they are not loading. Why? So, we have given the management of the depot up till 3pm today (Thursday) to come and proffer the reasons why liftings are not taking place and where liftings are taking place, why we have trickles of liftings,” Ladan added. sunnewsonline.com/new/dpr-seals-totals-depot-others-for-hoarding-46m-litres-of-petrol/ |
OSOGBO—Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused Governor Rauf Aregbesola of inflicting hardship on the people of the state, especially civil servants, by withholding the bailout funds rather than using it to pay salaries. The party, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Prince Diran Odeyemi in Osogbo yesterday, said the piecemeal mode adopted by state government in paying salaries was a further confirmation that the money had been fixed. It added that workers in the state were last paid half of their July salaries, with all allowances being hitherto enjoyed by them removed, stressing that the retirees were also being treated in same manner, with many of them still being owed up to six months despite release of bailout funds to the state in August. ‘PDP seeking relevance’ However, the consultant on information to the state government, Mr. Sunday Akere, debunked PDP claims. He said: “PDP wants to use our reaction to gain relevance. I am sure they have a copy of the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, the state government signed with the workers. “The bailout covered to June and we have paid June salaries, we have paid July and August. “We signed an MoU with the workers and we have kept to the terms of the document religiously.” www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/pdp-accuses-aregbesola-of-withholding-bailout-funds/ |
Abuja – The Muhammadu Buhari administration will strive to deliver on its campaign promises to the people of Nigeria, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), has assured. Osinbajo gave the assurance on Saturday at Ikenne, his home town where he was the Special Guest of Honour at the 39th Ereke Day celebration. Ereke is an annual festival organised in Ikenne, Ogun State, as platform for addressing the town’s developmental challenges. Osinbajo pointed out that the opportunity to address the nation’s numerous challenges and reposition the country for greatness is now. He said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration would keep its promises, saying “the President has no other business besides fixing the problems of the country.’’ He cited corruption and stealing as some of the reasons why things had gone wrong in the country, adding “but it is time now to fix all that have gone wrong.” He restated the commitment of the Federal Government to address the challenges facing the country. He said: “we have to deal with unemployment of young people; we have to deal with infrastructure; we have to deal with bad roads; we have to restore power, the challenges are many. “But I want to assure you that every single day that President Buhari spends in Abuja; that I spend in Abuja, we will work hard to achieve the promises we have made. “You can be sure of an honest and transparent government; you can be sure of hard work. “You can be sure that everything we promised, we will do.” Osinbajo, who also spoke to newsmen at the end of the event, said that President Buhari was working daily on how to solve Nigeria’s economic challenges. “The President you know has no other business; he is not doing anything else; this is his life commitment. “And he has said this is what he is going to commit his entire life to, to ensure that the economic problems are solved, employment opportunities are created,”, the VP said. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/buhari-presidency-will-fulfill-campaign-promises-to-nigerians-osinbajo/ CC laclasticla |

The Abia State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which sat in Umuahia, the capital city, wound down its activities on Tuesday after almost 180 days of its mission in the state. Although the judgement is still hazy as legal experts continue to ruminate on it, pending the release and careful study of the true certified copy, the summary is that the three-member jurists dismissed the petition filed by Dr. Alex Otti, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Otti had gone to the tribunal to seek the nullification of the declaration of Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, the PDP candidate, as governor by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the end of the April general elections in the state. He also prayed the tribunal to declare him the rightful winner of the governorship poll. Specifically, he asked for the nullification of results of Obingwa, Osisoma and Isialangwa North Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Abia, where the election was reportedly marred by massive fraud, irregularities and substantial non- compliance with the Electoral Act 2010. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/abia-gov-election-petition-verdict-fresh-dispute-erupts/ |
At 49, Jubril was thought to have an enviable marriage by his married friends – a 22-year partnership with beautiful Tumi who bore him three lovely children. They met in college and were almost inseparable. Then she became a mother of three, and gradually her appearance at parties with him began to fade. “When Jubril started staying out late and at most weekends, I warned my daughter of its implications”, Miriam, Tumi’s mother said. “As a Muslim, Jubril could be polygamous if he desired, but Tumi seemed to trust him not to take another wife. Well, he did. Not only that, he had said that since they lived in a sprawling accommodation, the new wife could have one of the chalets. At his age and with his position, Jubril said he wouldn’t want to be running from one woman’s house to the other if his new wife were to live on a different premises. Tumi was devastated to say the least. She’d invested so much into her marriage, and to be replaced with a new model in her life as if she was an old car, was too hard for her to take. “I had to counsel her all of the time, to tell her that she too was a product of polygamy, but she believed her husband was throwing away all they’d both worked for, all the investments in emotions and their home for a gold-digger. She was sure her husband would soon regret his decision. When I eventually met Yosola, the new wife, I was a bit taken aback by her simplicity. She was young and fresh-faced all right, but you could hardly call her a gold-digger. She came from a very strict Muslim background. Her parents were rich and she turned out to be a successful business woman. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/how-to-help-your-daughter-cope-with-accepting-her-hubbys-second-wife/ |
