I WILL never forget the day I agreed to have a talk with a friend who was on the verge of ditching her husband for another married man. “I am tired of giving birth to ugly children”, she snapped when I broached the subject, telling her my mediating was at the insistence of her husband, who was also a close friend. “My daughter is so dark I feel for her at times as there is the possibility of her attracting only ugly men. 1 am dark, my husband is dark. You have seen the new man yourself, he has lovely children. Let me also have children 1 can be proud of for a change!” So she left and eventually had three children by this other man. I wished I could say they are as ugly as the ones she had with her first husband, but no. They are quite attractive and athletic, and she was proud of her feat! Her husband also remarried, of course. “And his new set of kids are even uglier than the ones I had for him,” smirked my friend. Lately, I learnt both of them were thinking of going back together since they were not properly divorced. I thought the idea absurd. I would have termed it impossible, if I hadn’t heard it from the now bitter father of her ‘lovely’ children, her second ‘husband’. When she phoned a few days later, I told her of the ridiculous rumour I heard about her first husband coming back to her. “Don’t mind the jerk, he’s just jealous,” she said of her now ex-lover, “By the way, Jide (her real husband) is here and wants to talk to you.” “Are you back together” I asked him incredulously when he came on the phone. “Of course, we are!” he actually sounded happy. |

I think the use of central igbo should be practised now and the different dialects can be spoken in the region were it originates or between people of that area because if are to forget the central igbo and chase after the different dialects our language may not live to survive it.we have to revive our igbo language first before any other thing. |

There are indications that the Nigerian Communications Commission may be asked to reduce the N1.04 trillion fine imposed on MTN Nigeria over non compliance in the deactivation of improper registered SIM cards. This is after the Commission Tuesday, received a letter from the telecommunications company, apologizing for wrong doing and pleading for leniency. An impeccable source at the NCC told Vanguard on condition of anonymity that the commission was in receipt of MTN’s apology letter but however added that the power to decide what is to be done at the moment was no longer in NCC’s hands. According to the source, “ I can confirm that the commission has received an official letter from MTN admitting its guilt and pleading for leniency. However, the power to grant the leniency is no longer entirely on NCC’s hands but that of the presidency. But there are also indications that the Federal Government may ask us to reduce the fine to an appreciable level. “If MTN had complied with several directives by the NCC it wouldn’t have been in this mess but I hope they learn their lessons from this. Nigeria is its biggest market. It was surprising that they didn’t anticipate that if things get wrong here, it could affect their other markets. Now, it is alleged that it has lost more than $2.7b from people migrating from its shares to others since this incident. Its a lesson they should not allow to recur” he added. Meanwhile, according to a report published by online platform, Bloomberg Business yesterday, the South African lawmakers, are planning to meet with the officials of MTN Group Limited to discuss why the company was fined $5.2 billion by the NCC. The report said that the law makers also intend to summon the South African industry regulator to determine whether MTN is compliant with local rules, with hearings likely to take place next year. Bloomberg quoted chairwoman of Parliament’s telecommunications committee Nkhensani Kubayi, to be leading the panel. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/ncc-may-reduce-mtns-n1-04tr-fine/ |

Apparently stunned by the artistry of defending champions, Golden Eaglets in the on-going FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, former Mexico U-17 coach, Raul Gutierrez has accused the Nigerian wonder-kids of doing things no real U-17 player could do with the ball. He did not spare Mali too as he claimed that the two African teams in Chile could not possibly be U-17 players. Gutiérrez was in charge when the 2013 set of Eaglets beat Mexico twice en-route to being crowned champions in the United Arab Emirates. And while the Golden Eaglets have been outstanding at the ongoing tournament in Chile, Gutiérrez suggests that there is much to meet the eye as he posited that the Eaglets aside their physical attributes take decisions that are not expected of true U-17 players. Gutiérrez also made same accusation against the Mali team that have also booked their place in the semi final. “It’s the same with the Nigeria team, so with Mali, that beyond their physical development, decisions made by many of their players are not of an U-17 player’’ the coach told mediotiempo.com. Despite his fears, Gutiérrez said he believes Mexico can beat Nigeria when both countries meet in the semi-finals on Thursday (12a.m. Friday, Nigeria time), but admitted that it will be difficult. “Sure we can beat them. I think Mexico can have a good result on Thursday. “In football nothing is written, everyone already knows that the game will be complex. We will face an opponent with a winning record, but you must play the game, the matches are defined on the field and we have to think that way,” says Gutiérrez. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/mexico-coach-slams-nigeria-mali-as-age-cheats/ |
Enugu — The umbrella association of all Igbo cultural unions, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has given reasons for Igbo language not being spoken at Igbo gatherings by Ndigbo. Former National Secretary of Ohanaeze, Professor Ben Nwabueze, SAN, who spoke, lamented that Ndigbo do not speak the Igbo language to themselves because most of them were promoting their various dialects instead of speaking the central Igbo. There are as many Igbo dialects as there are communities. Nwabueze, who spoke at an Igbo language programme organized by the Igbo Youth Movement, IYM, for secondary school students in Enugu, said that Ohanaeze Ndigbo once decided that its meetings and activities would be conducted in Igbo, but this did not work because there were several Igbo dialects spoken in various parts of Igbo nation unlike Hausa or Yoruba which had acceptable central language. “We once said at an Ohanaeze meeting that all our meetings would be conducted in Igbo because we realized that our language was dying, but this did not work. The first day we decided that we must speak Igbo in our meetings, the late governor of Anambra State, Chief C. C. Onoh spoke his own brand of WAWA Igbo. “Onoh spoke at length and most people did not understand what he was saying. Every other person spoke his own dialect and at the end, nobody spoke Igbo again at Ohanaeze because none of us understood one another’s dialect,” he said. Also contributing, the former Registrar of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, and now traditional ruler, Professor Chukwuemeka Ike, blamed the inability of Ndigbo to speak Igbo on the missionaries who established schools in Igbo land. Ike said that when he went to the then Government College, Umuahia in the present Abia State, it was an offence to speak Igbo in the school premises. “When I went to Government College, it was an offence to speak Igbo in the school then. When I left the college, I travelled overseas for further studies. Writers should publish their books in both English and Igbo languages …,” he added. Also speaking, the former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, said that Igbo language should not be allowed to die. On why Ndigbo do not speak their language, Ekwueme said that this was because, “English language is a predator to Igbo,” just as Hausa is the predator to Angas, spoken by the former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon’s people. “Gowon’s father was the leader of his people in the Anglican Church. The Bible was first translated to Angas language, but nobody read it because Hausa is predator to Angas. Igbo Bible is not read because English is the predator to Igbo. “The Hausa Bible which was translated after the Angas Bible is widely read, but that of the Angas did not sell,” he said. John Okafor, aka Ibu, an actor, also lamented that the average “Igbo child cannot tell you where he comes from. He will tell you that his/her father has not told him the name of his village. This is not good. We must speak our language,” Ibu said. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/why-we-dont-speak-igbo-at-our-meetings-ohanaeze/ cc laclasticla |
By Simon Ebegbulem BENIN—Edo State Government has uncovered $31 million allegedly siphoned from the coffers of the state during the administration of a former governor of the state and directed the Attorney- General to commence legal processes to recover same. This was part of the decision reached at the end of the State Executive Council, SEC, meeting held in the state capital, yesterday. Uncovered fraud Briefing the press at the end of the meeting, Commissioner for Information, Mr Louis Odion said: “There is the issue of a fraud that was discovered while turning our books. We found that the $31 million was fraudulently taken from state coffers under a past administration in state. The governor has directed the Attorney-General to commence legal action in that direction. So, in the coming days, the state government will take legal action to ensure that what was stolen from Edo State Government is recovered. When you convert $31 million to naira, it fetches you a whopping N7 billion. You can imagine what N7 billion will do in improving the human condition in Edo State.” The commissioner, who praised some landlords and companies in the state on the level of their compliance with the land use charge, said Governor Oshiomhole asked him to convey his appreciation and gratitude to the people of Edo State as well as members of the private sector for their voluntary compliance with the Land Use Charge. Challenge “He has asked me to single out Coca-Cola Bottling Company for voluntary compliance. I think we need to put this in context. Our challenge as a government is mounting. Every day, our citizens want government to intervene, they want schools to be built, they want roads reconstructed but the truth is that our revenue is dwindling and without deepening the tax base, we won’t be able to deliver. So, when we find corporate bodies and citizens who voluntarily comply by paying their taxes, we view them as partners in progress. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/edo-moves-to-recover-31m-from-ex-governor/ |
Abuja – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says it will ensure that 80 per cent of Nigerians are aware of their fundamental human rights by the end of December, 2015. Its Executive Secretary, Prof. Bem Angwe, made the declaration on Monday in Abuja when he received Mr Mike Omeri, the Director-General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), at the commission’s headquarters. “By the end of this year, we want to achieve a target of having at least 80 per cent of Nigerians aware of their rights. “As a result of this, the commission has identified some institutions in the country to partner with. “We commenced this partnership with parliamentarians who accepted to make available their constituencies and support the commission to promote the rights of their constituents. “That relationship has produced resources and logistics needed to promote the rights of Nigerians in many states,’’ Angwe said. Angwe said the commission had earlier partnered the NOA when its director general pledged to translate the section of the Nigerian constitution on human rights into the three major languages. The executive secretary said that this partnership was necessary as it would enable Nigerians to read about their rights in their native languages. “We desire that Nigerians be empowered physically, mentally and economically. “ So we will work with the agency to make this happen by ensuring that every Nigerian is able to read about their rights in their various languages,’’ he said. Omeri, on his part, said that the agency was working hard to complete the task of translating the section of the constitution on human rights into the three major Nigerian languages. “We are still working on the promise we made to translate a portion of the constitution into the three major languages and we hope to get this done as soon as it is possible,’’ he said. He appreciated the commitment of the commission to ensuring that the rights of every citizen were protected by swiftly intervening whenever the rights of a citizen were trampled on. The NOA boss expressed concern that some Nigerians were still ignorant of their rights and would not even know when these rights were being abused. “Currently at this phase of our development, a number of people are not aware of their fundamental human rights. “Rights that are derived from our laws and rights that are natural and so they suffer without knowing that they have a platform to seek redress,’’ he said. Omeri pledged the agency’s readiness to work with the NHRC to sensitise every Nigerian on their basic rights. This, he said, would empower them to cry out when these rights were being infringed on even by the government. Omeri called on the NHRC to provide the necessary tools to train its staff in the 774 local governments to enable them effectively educate Nigerians on their basic and fundamental human rights. Jose Mourinho admits Chelsea have no margin for error as the pressure mounts on the beleaguered Blues boss ahead of Wednesday’s crucial Champions League clash against Dynamo Kiev. Mourinho faces one of the most significant moments in his long and illustrious career when Kiev visit Stamford Bridge for a match he cannot afford to lose. The 52-year-old is hanging onto his job by a slender thread after a turbulent season took another turn for the worse with a 3-1 home defeat against Liverpool on Saturday. That lacklustre loss left Chelsea languishing in 15th place in the English top-flight, with their six defeats from 11 games the worst start by defending champions in the Premier League era. Chelsea’s malaise hasn’t been restricted to domestic competitions and their Champions League campaign is also in the balance after just one win from their three Group G matches leaves them in third place behind Kiev and leaders Porto. Another setback against the Ukrainian champions would put Chelsea in severe danger of crashing out before the knockout stages and further increase the belief that Mourinho will be axed in the coming days. Acknowledging the significance of the occasion, Mourinho, who received further bad news on Monday when he was handed a one-game stadium ban for this weekend’s trip to Stoke, said: “It’s a big game. It’s a game that we cannot lose. “We still can finish first, second or third and obviously we want to finish in the top two.” Blues owner Roman Abramovich is said to remain sympathetic to Mourinho’s problems, but the Russian billionaire has rarely been able to stop himself from wielding the axe when managers have failed to deliver in the past. Mourinho’s chances of surviving are hardly helped by repeated reports of a dressing room mutiny by players unhappy with his stern man-management style. So it couldn’t have been reassuring for Abramovich that a BBC reporter this week claimed one unnamed first-team star has said he would rather lose than win while playing under the Portuguese coach. – Under seige – Adding to the sense that Mourinho is a man under seige, on Monday he discovered he will be the subject of individual legal action from former Chelsea team doctor Eva Carneiro, who was removed from first-team duties after the manager criticised her for treating the injured Eden Hazard late in a draw with Swansea. The 0-0 draw in Kiev in Chelsea’s last European fixture suggests the Ukrainians won’t necessarily provide the kind of tame opposition Mourinho could do with facing, especially with the Blues no longer such an imposing force at home. Mourinho lost one of his first 99 Premier League home games, but Chelsea’s woes have erased the fear factor for visiting teams, with three Premier League clubs having taken maximum points on their visits to the Bridge already this season. Restoring Chelsea’s sense of invincibility on home turf is one of the most important tasks facing Mourinho. But he has cut an increasingly forlorn figure on the touchline during Chelsea’s run of one win from their last eight games and concern was etched on his face when he held an impromptu meeting with his coaching staff on the pitch minutes after the final whistle signalled their latest loss on Saturday. Yet, despite a traumatic week in which the west Londoners lost to West Ham and Liverpool and were knocked out of the League Cup by Stoke, Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel insists Mourinho retains his team’s support. “We are right behind the manager. There’s no doubt about it. If anyone can turn this around, we definitely think he’s the one,” Mikel said. “We are giving 100 percent, we are playing for the manager, we are right behind him. “He is doing everything that needs to be done. It’s just that right now things aren’t going well, so everyone (outside the club) wants him to go. “I don’t think it’s the right way to go. He knows what’s wrong and it’s just a matter of time before results start coming.” source vanguardngr.com |
