Exactly, the poverty, illiteracy and the worst ever case of Stockholm syndrome in that region is dragging our democracy back. Might be time for Nigeria to start thinking of splitting, so that regions with their own ideologies develop at their own pace. My 2 cents.

Actually, back in 1999, INEC won't register any party that did not have representation/offices in all the 36 states and Abuja....that's how we got PDP, APP(now APC) and AD (now APC).

But the late SAN, SAM Gani Fawehimni went to the Supreme court and got a ruling forcing INEC to throw out the 'have representation in all states criteria on the grounds that it was not in the constitution (Uncle Gani had been trying to get his party NCP registered and INEC had turned him down)

So, as a result, by 2003...we had 50 parties. It's gone downhill from there.

And the late SAN was right on his premise! Restricting parties' registration goes against the freedom of association, a core tenet of democracy. I rest my case.

Electronic voting is the answer to all these issues. The next president, hopefully not Lifeless FC, has a great job to do in cajoling and persuading the National Assembly to sign off and pass the electronic voting bill.
