Family › Re: What Is Your Christmas Experience Growing Up In Nigeria by Yemike(m): 10:53pm On Dec 25, 2024 |
Sapasenator: As kids growing up in Nigeria, Christmas was the most important celebration for us and we eagerly looked forward to it.
I came from a very poor background so rice was not what we eat regularly, Christmas was an opportunity for us kids to eat rice and chicken to our fills.
Christmas usually started around November, this was when my parent would go to Balogun market to buy Christmas clothes and shoes for all of us.
We never went along, it was only our parents who would select Christmas clothes and shoes and we had this curiosity waiting for them to come back so we can inspect the clothes and shoes. Once they were back from the market, we locke the doors and windows to test the clothes and shoes with some of our friends peeking from the windows to see our special Christmas clothes.
I remember wiping the bottoms of my shoes after testing them so they remain brand new on Christmas day. That was the only day we got brand new clothes, the rest of the year, my mom would send us to Sylvanus store to select used clothes to compare and see who got the best clothes. Hehehehe.
Two weeks to Christmas, my mom would go to the market and select about three chickens to feed for slaughter on the eve of Christmas day. So, at 6 pm on the 24th December, we would kill the chickens and start preparing for Christmas, we kids never sleep in the night as we kept dreaming of the next day. I and my friends we used car plugs, wood and matches to create knockouts for the celebrate as we could not afford banga. Wr would wake very early in the morning of Christmas, bath and put on our Christmas clothes, shoes and attires and, off we went to our friend's houses, together as a group we knock on the doors off all our neighbors and random strangers.
The rule then was anyone who comes to you house on Christmas, you have to feed them even if the were strangers so, we just randomly knock on doors, walk in , eat rice and chicken and ask the adults to " do Christmas for us".
We walked all around town eating from strangers, blowing knockouts and collecting Christmas money.
After we are done eating outside, then we would come to our house, by them my mom's food was ready and I eat together with my friends. We also dished out foods in trays to share to our neighbors and the neighbors in return will offer us trays of food and drinks. We had this family friend that worked at Coca Cola and every year end , we always received about 4 crates of Coca Cola for this family reserved for our Christmas day feast.
At the end of the day, I would be so full that I would not be able to lie face down for all the food I had eaten that day.
What was your experience growing up on Christmas day, was it similar to mine? Did you guys go about eating food from strangers and asking for Christmas money? Is this practice still continuing today?
Thinking back, I must say it was very fun every Christmas and on new years days, we carried on with the celebrations.
Share your experience growing up in Nigeria on Christmas days. Forgive my typos as I am on my second champagne bottle with my Jamaican Dragon Sout beer. Bros, you be OG o. You just shared my mum's experience. My own experience of xmas as a kid starts around October/November with racket and my mum's double geese matches dey suffer gan especially the one we usually made with bottle crown, it requires two matches to make a deafening sound. We don't buy shoes and clothes yearly tho'. What my mum usually do is that she go for quality and oversize clothes and shoes that you'll end up passing to the next generation. If my mum buy shoe, it'll spend at least 3 years. There's one ready made cloth with jacket that I wore, my brother wear it, even our 4th born wear it. Christmas present the chance to eat chicken. The friday before xmas, my dad will come home with half bag of rice, a gallon of turkey oil and 2 cockerel nah when I grow up I know say nah from cooperative society. Little wonder January dey always dry. I pray my children have a different and better tales to tell about their xmas. |

Have You Cultivated Oil Palms And Cassava Before Now, Or It Is A New Venture That You Would Like To Go Into In Year 2025 ? Cultivating Oil palm is something I've had in mind for long but it requires much more capital to make profit. The bigger the land, the higher the number of seedlings and the bigger the profit. I only raise Oil palm seedlings but I started cultivating cassava this year and my first harvest will be ready by March next year. |

Besides the cold harmattan weather in the morning that normally characterizes this time of the year, nothing else smells festivities. I remember with nostalgia what Christmas used to feel like. Seems a whole lot has changed.
Apart from the economic situations, what else could have caused this? Insecurity. Welcome back boss. |

That means you can organize a movement to kill all Champion and Carriers. Are they not human? Don't they deserve happiness also? Abi because they're AS or SS now they should just fall and die. |

I thought the general consensus is that the aforementioned players are good enough.
BTW, we are currently one of the few clubs that are lucky with injuries... Judging by Bruno's recent performance, he does not merit that list. He's basically playing championship football in the premier league. |

opes: So bad of them if this is true, but they mentioned WINGS as the organiser, even the venue? Agidigbo has been having it's yearly children's carnival at Islamic high school since last week and it'll run through till next week or so. The registration fee for each kid is 7k with lots of prices like cash, plot of land etc (according to their advert) today's own was different because the ex ooni queen promised to sponsor like 200 kids or so. Does that make her the organizer? Time will tell. |

opes: Agidigbo FM just issued a statement denying to be part of the organisers..They were just one of the media outfits where the event was advertised and promoted.. Nope. It is called Agidigbo Children's Carnival and Oriyomi is the forerunner. It's their own equivalent of the Christmas party other radio station organizes. But what do you expect them to say? |

Make I read again o. Don't mind the bias report. The organizer Oriyomi Hamzat clearly said He's not doing Christmas party but Children's Carnival as he's a staunt muslim and he doesn't shy away from that. When trouble now occur they're now calling it Christmas party. The primary organizer was Oriyomi Hamzat, the Olori just sponsored some kids but they have to drag her in to have soft landing. It is not Christmas Party. |

Merry100: Please kindly respond if you know how this issue can be resolved. I'm not satisfied with this situation. Speaking in diverse tongues doesn't just happen. It is enabled by the Holy Spirit. It is a spiritual gift that was first released after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. It is a supernatural sign that involves speaking in languages that the speaker doesn't know uttering sounds that those without the gift of interpretation may not understand. God has given this gift to speak mysteries supernaturally to God (1 Cor. 14:2), magnify God (Acts 10:45,46), edify ourselves (1 Cor. 14:4; Jude 20), help us to pray in the spirit (Rom. 8:26; Eph. 6:18), and for spiritual refreshing (Isa. 28:11,12) Now my sister, for this gift to serve it's purpose (glorifying God and edifying the church) it should be interpreted. 1 Cor. 14:5 In your case you need the Holy Spirit to help you to take control of your gift. One thing is obvious, God wants more of you but there are some destractions that's not allowing you to get to that height that He wanted you to be. What you need is getting more intimate with God and he will guide you through. He is your father, He will never forsake you. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Yemike(m): 12:40pm On Dec 18, 2024 |
CapitalCee: I am fully in support of Rashford sales. But one of the key reasons why players don't succeed in Man Utd is because of the toxic fans and toxic media against our players. we have. Man Utd fans over the years have proven from assessment to be the most dumbest and clueless fan base in world football. Whenever a player, especially a young player does well, he will be hyped to high heavens and then within months a lot of people will begin to develop agendas on the same players.
Few months ago goals from Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo gave the win in the FA cup final, both teenagers at that time, the whole fanbase were waxing lyrical about them. Fast forward 5 months later, the same idiotic and foolish toxic fans are turning on on them abusing and bullying them despite their age, not regarding that they still have some aspect of their games they need to upgrade on and they also have few professional traits they need to acquire for their all round abilities.
I use to remember Sir Alex Ferguson banning journalists from press conferences who reports rubbish about our players, or who ask him stupid questions. In 2015/16 season Hazard scored just 1 league goal the entire season, Diego Costa was completely out of form, after winning the league the previous season, yet Chelsea fans were not bullying and cursing them, they came back the next season to put world class performances and won the league, If na us we will be asking that they should be offloaded for free and their contract ls terminated, costa later was sold at £55m Hazard later went for over £100m, later we will be crying that our board no sabi sell.
If I am a young player Man United will be the last place I will consider playing football. If Amad knows what is good for him this is the right time for him to leave the club because they will soon come for him, once he string together 5 unconvincing performances. If I am Mainoo I will be leaving this toxic fan base. Garnacho who is now the devil and the worst player on the planet If I am him i will be looking for a new team, like Dortmund or Leverkusen, Man United is not the right environment for young players to develop. Look at Hojlund, came to the club at just 20, at deadline day so missed like 4 weeks of actions, no pre season, he scored 21 goals even though he was out for some time due to injury and he is joining a new league, in one of the worst Man United teams ever. The boy went to Euros for his country missed a few chances, for his country oo not in the club, the stupid fan base started calling for us to sell him.
If Amorim want to succeed he need to protect his players from the toxic fans, If a player performs badly either in match or in training, or having disciplinary issues he should treat it internally. Rashford deserves to be sold, but which other black player is in line to be the villian? Amad? Mainoo?or both? Chose your pick. You just described every club's fanbase bro. I think it's even wrong to put patience and Chelsea fanbase in the same bracket. You cannot expect everybody to be on the same wavelenght. If a player is churning out bad performance week in week out do you expect everyone to be quiet? If you say you love a club and you noticed the players behaving like our politicians do in election window, will you be happy? If not that the guys at the helm of affairs no get sense how can Rashford be getting 325k a week? If not for the divided opinion on Ganarcho the Puskas would have earn him another contract of 250k a week. If you're a player, when man utd come calling you can go to Eyimba bro. We can't keep pampering players and condoning rubbish. If we break the cycle this time around, upcoming academy graduates will come good. What you said about the media is 100% spot on. |

Everybody is an image of God including the so called enemy. When Jesus said to Peter get behind me satan he was not talking to Peter because he knew it was not him that made the statement but the devil was speaking through him at that point in time. That person we call our enemy is not our enemy, he's an image of God it's the devil that is using them to our detriment we should face. |
