A spike in novel coronavirus in India has prompted concerns that the world's second-most populous country could face a serious outbreak of the virus, which to date has infected more than 95,000 people and killed at least 3,300 worldwide.

Twenty-nine cases have been confirmed inside the country, including three who have recovered. Many of the cases are linked to a group of travelers from Italy, the hardest-hit country in Europe, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said.

Authorities in the country have advised caution, but have not raised the alarm. Vardhan told lawmakers in parliament Tuesday that public health authorities are focusing on India's "core capacities for disease preparedness and response."
The government has begun screening all passengers arriving in the country for coronavirus.

"The scale and extent of our interventions have increased in alignment the evolving situation of COVID-19 across the world, and India in particular," he said, referring to the disease by its formal name. "With the increasing global spread of the disease, we are confronted with new challenges. The contact tracing of positive cases requires the tracing of hundreds of contacts in multiple locations and monitoring their health."

Vardhan also said the government was preparing a "containment plan" for the city of Agra -- home to the Taj Mahal -- where a cluster of cases has been identified.

Italy's government announced it will temporarily close the nation's schools and universities, according to local media, as the authorities struggle to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

The closure will come into effect from Thursday and will last until mid-March.

Earlier on Wednesday, Italy had the dubious honor of being the worst-affected country from the coronavirus outside Asia, having overtaken Iran in terms of the number of deaths and infections from the virus.

The death toll in Italy jumped to 79 on Tuesday, up from an official total of 52 on Monday. As of Wednesday morning, there are 2,502 cases of the virus in Italy, according to Italian media reports that are updated ahead of the daily official count, published by Italy's Civil Protection Agency every evening.

Italy's coronavirus numbers had surpassed Iran's official infection count until the Islamic Republic released its latest official infection and death count. On Wednesday, it announced that 92 people had died from the coronavirus and 2,922 had been infected. There is speculation over the accuracy of Iran's tally of the epidemic.

The death toll from two tornadoes that ripped through central Tennessee has risen to 25, the state's Governor William Lee said on Tuesday.

In Nashville, Tennessee's biggest city, the tornadoes caused widespread damage to homes and other buildings.

The storm hit after midnight and moved so quickly that many people sleeping didn't have time to take shelter, US media reports.

President Donald Trump has said he plans to visit the state on Friday.

A number of people remain unaccounted for, Governor Lee said in a press conference.

The scene in Nashville is "like a war zone" one resident told the BBC.

Two others, David Haskell and his wife, sprinted into a storm shelter when emergency alarms went off on their phones.

"Ten seconds later the house just exploded," Mr Haskell told a Tennessee newspaper.

Much of the damage is centred in Putnam County - 80 miles (130km) east of Nashville - where 19 deaths have been reported so far.

In Wilson County, three people are reported to have died, as well as two people in Davidson County and one in Benton.

Nashville Mayor John Cooper said the city was "devastated", and urged people to "lend a helping hand" to neighbours.

Around 150 injured people were taken to medical facilities, Mayor Cooper said.

"It is an ongoing search and rescue right now," the state's Emergency Community Relations Officer Maggie Hannan told the BBC.

About 44,000 people have been left without power, Nashville Electric said.

There was also "significant damage" to John C Tune Airport, about eight miles from the city centre, the airport said.

Police in the Mt Juliet suburb, east of Nashville, said: "There are gas lines that are leaking, power lines that are on the ground, and multiple emergency responders are responding to those who are injured."

Nashville's Emergency Operations Centre said it had opened a shelter with running water in a farmer's market to help displaced residents.

The city's schools, courts and transport lines will be closed on Tuesday due to the damage, officials said.

Election polling sites located at schools will be open, but four polling stations have been moved.

Tennessee is one of 14 US states holding primary contest votes on vSuper Tuesday to select a Democratic nominee to stand in November's presidential election.

54,000 more jihadist released into the world

Iran has temporarily released more than 54,000 prisoners in an effort to combat the spread of the new coronavirus disease in crowded jails.

Judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili told reporters that the inmates were granted furlough after testing negative for Covid-19 and posting bail.

"Security prisoners" sentenced to more than five years will not be let out.

The jailed British-Iranian charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe may be freed soon, according to a British MP.

Tulip Siddiq cited the Iranian ambassador to the UK as saying that Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe "may be released on furlough today or tomorrow".
Her husband said on Saturday that he believed she had contracted Covid-19 at Tehran's Evin prison and that authorities were refusing to test her.

But Mr Esmaili insisted on Monday that Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe had subsequently been in contact with her family and "told them about her good health".

Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe was jailed for five years in 2016 after being convicted of espionage charges that she has denied. The UK has also insisted she is innocent.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We call on the Iranian government to immediately allow health professionals into Evin prison to assess the situation of British-Iranian dual nationals there."
