The government is expected to announce further steps designed to shut down most of the market within several days.


Israel is expected to impose further restrictions and regulations on the public, limiting movement and employment as the coronavirus crisis worsens. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was meeting with top government officials throughout the day Saturday to finalize the new guidelines.

Health Ministry officials reportedly said that no more than two people should be in a room together to prevent the spread of the virus, according to N12. Additionally, Health Ministry officials reportedly recommended a partial lockdown for at least five weeks, while others warned that a lockdown could lead to economic collapse.
Officials from various ministries reportedly said that to implement this kind of lockdown would take at least two days, N12 reported on Saturday morning. There is also reportedly discussion of how to produce food and keep banks and the stock exchange open with the new restrictions.

According to N12, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government is expected to restrict public transportation and employment. Israel is also expected to declare a state-wide shutdown of all educational facilities, including preschools.
The National Security Council held discussions on Friday, examining further restrictions. According to N12, the next expected steps of the government are a massive raise of COVID-19 tests, as well as transforming hotels into facilities that will hold patients in satisfactory condition.

"Curfews are something that need to be used," Leshem told N12, explaining that a two-week state-wide "Italian-style" closure may help Israel prevent an outbreak. Earlier on Friday, Defense Minister Naftali Bennett announced that three facilities will be set up in Israel's North, Center and South to hold those in quarantine.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin has signed a bill that could keep him in power for eight more years. Critics are calling the move a coup at a time when coronavirus makes mass demonstrations impossible.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday signed a series of unprecedented constitutional amendments that could set him up for an additional two terms as president.

The measures now move to the Constitutional Court for approval this week, followed by a public referendum to be held next month.

The bill contains nearly 400 changes to Russia's constitution; among them an amendment that would restart the counting of Putin's presidential terms. Under current law, the Russian leader is required to leave office in 2024. If approved, the new legislation would position him for two more six-year terms in office, potentially keeping him in power until 2036.

The 67-year-old leader served two four-year terms as president from 2000 to 2008. The presidential term was then extended to six years and Putin was re-elected in 2012 and 2018.

Putin introduced the last-minute proposal to the 68-page bill on Tuesday, when it was quickly approved in the lower house of parliament. It later also passed in the upper house and in regional parliaments.

The bill would also strengthen the presidency, outlaw same sex marriage in Russia, and list "a belief in God" as a key Russian value.

The Russian public will vote on the amendments on April 22. The country's Senate Speaker Valentina Matvienko on Saturday said the referendum "must take place despite various worries about coronavirus."

Critics are calling the move a power grab at a time when the coronavirus outbreak restricts mass gatherings and the ability to protest.

Roman Catholic churches in England are "preparing for a time" when the celebration of Mass may have to "come to an end", the Catholic leader in England and Wales has said.

Catholics have an obligation to go to Mass every Sunday.

But large gatherings could be banned in the UK from as early as next weekend, as the coronavirus continues to spread.

The Church of England is also following these procedures, as well as refraining from passing collection plates around.

The Muslim Council of Britain has urged mosques, madrasas and Muslim community centres to follow the governments hygiene practices.

It also urged mosques to have contingency plans in place for Ramadan - which begins in the second half of April - as it may have to suspend mass gatherings.

The United Synagogue asked its members to refrain from shaking hands and kissing religious artefacts, such as communal siddurim, which is a Jewish prayer book.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols said Catholic churches were "adjusting" to minimise the spread of infection.

He said: "We are preparing for a time when the churches should not be used to gather big numbers of people together, so we might come to an end of the celebration of Mass or other services."

Many churches have already brought in measures to avoid exposing congregations to the virus.

In some churches, holy water has been removed from the entrances, the sign of peace - normally a handshake - has been replaced by bowing and churchgoers can no longer drink wine from shared chalices.

Church ministers are also washing their hands before distributing wafers.

Speaking to BBC's Radio 4's Today programme, Cardinal Vincent Nichols said: "These are not the essential parts of mass," adding that he hoped everyone will be "cooperative and calm

However, he said: "The presence of the church and the space that it offers will be very important in the coming months," adding that some churches might also move to live-stream services.

"Even if the priest is there with one helper, we can stream them and people can join in from home and gather if they wish on a Sunday to follow the mass and say their prayers together," he said.

He added that, in his view, churches would "always remain open" because they were "places where people can go, they can sit quietly, they can pray there's, plenty of space in them and there are no health risks."
