Entry 2: Getting Approved on Upwork in 5 minutes

So this is how I got approved on Upwork this morning.

Let’s start from the top and work down the profile creation.

Sorry for lack of screenshots. You still get this done without them.

Step-by-Step Guide On Getting Approved on Upwork in 5 minutes

1) Create an Account:

Sign up and create an Account.

Don’t feck around here.

Put in Your real name and email address.

Put in your real country. Don’t lie.

Say you are Nigerian. It’s fine.

Upwork will verify at some point.

Next step, select that you want to work as a FREELANCER.

Click the button that says you accept their terms.

First part done.

2.) What are the main services you offer to client?

You will be asked what services you offer to client on the next page.

Let’s just go with an example here:

Sales and Marketing.

Now, here’s where you need to start listening carefully.

The skill you pick doesn’t matter as long as you can prove your value with said skill throughout the rest of your profile.

After you pick a general skill, you will be asked about the type of work you do within that skill. In this section you can choose up to 4 types of work.

Please just choose one.

So for Sales and Marketing we have the following types of work to choose from:

- Display Advertising
- Email and Marketing Automation
- Lead Generation
- Market & Customer research
- Public Realtions
- Search engine Marketing
- Search Engine Optimization
- Social Media Marketing
- Telemarketing & Telesales


You have to chose something related to the skill you have chosen.

Im using Sales & Marketing as an example so a related work type is....

Social Media Marketing.

This is important.

You must pick a work type that has the service in the name.

We picked Sales & Marketing and Social Media Marketing has Marketing in it.

So main service: Sales & Marketing
Work Type: Social Media Marketing

Continuing down, you’ll choose your skill.

You pick one skill.

And make sure it relates to your main service and work type.

See a pattern?

Don’t blow this part or you’ll get rejected.

Gara!

Everything should be related.

You should be backing up your main service with every entry.

So a skill I might pick will with our example will be:

Facebook Marketing.

You see how it all ties together.

Marketing is used in all piece of information I’m providing.

This is the one thing you have to do to get approved.


3) Choose Experience Level

Choose Intermediate.

It’s what I chose and got accepted.

4) Tell Us more about you

On the next page upload a photo.

Use a real picture of you.

A headshot.

Take the picture preferably outside under sunlight.

Remember to smile.

A headshot, remember. Clear and not blurry. Clear.


5)Add a professional Title

It should be obvious now.

You pick something related to your service, work type and skill.

A good title here will be:

Facebook Marketing Expert.

Here are some other things to keep in mind:

- Keep your Title short. 3 words or less.

- Make it something people will search for.

Anything else and you’ll get rejected hard.

Keep it simple, direct and tie it in to everything.

6) Your Bio

- Describe your strength and skills.

- Highlights projects, accomplishments and education.

- Make sure it’s error free.

Simple, right?

But here’s where most people Eff it up.

Here’s a sample of how you should go about this:

Hi my name is Fred and I’m a professional Facebook Marketer with 4 years of Agency work. I have a bachelor’s degree in Marketing. Over the last 4 years, I have worked with large and small marketing agencies. During that time, I have honed my skills in managing profitable Facebook ad campaigns for clients. 7) Education and Work History

Below your Bio you will have the chance to add your education and work history.

Fill this out.

Don’t ever leave it blank.

If you only have a high school, use it.

If you took a Facebook course In Ikeja this one time, add it.

Try and make your degree tie in with all your areas, skills, work types, service etc.

Set your Proficiency Level

Set your proficiency level as the ‘Native or Biliangual’ option.

9) Set your hourly rate

Set your hourly rate at $40 dollars.

This is a sweet spot I have seen gets you approved. Too low and you might get denied. Too high and you also might get denied.

Just go with $40.

10) Add your availability and location

Choose ‘More than 30hrs/week’.

Doesn’t matter if you don’t have that much time.

Upwork wants available Freelancers.


11) What type of projects are you interested in

Choose ‘Both Longer and Short term projects’

Upwork wants flexible freelancers.

Show them that’s you.

Next put in a real address.

Don’t game things here.

Plus you can’t get paid without correct info.

Then enter your phone number next.

You will get sent a verification code.

Whew.

Made it to the end!


All you gonna do now is click ‘submit application’ and see what happens.

Have had about 5 of similar experiences with online biz. When it comes to online biz, the moment you send me any account details with an igbo or yoruba name or if I notice any non Nigerian names in between, I will just quit dat transaction.
On 3 occasions, it was an igbo name, one with a yoruba and the 5th one was a foreigner who claimed he's resident in Albania.
So I quitted all this Facebook and whatsapp chat online biz tey tey

Let’s avoid stereotyping! It could have been any tribe. I only wish Nigerians one day become considerate and stop being selfish.

@uchnino, though I have forgiven you oh, but don’t let me ever smell you in this Lagos, not to talk of see. I will make sure you spend few days in a police station or barracks. Not to get back the 5k, but just to teach you lesson to build a good reputation for yourself and be contented with what is in your pocket.

Like I said, he took his sim away for some time. A particular moment, I was lucky to reach him (only God knows why he put his sim that particular period). He picked and when he heard it was me, he cut immediately and switched off. Since then, it became impossible to reach him. And guess what?? THE BASTARD HAS BLOCKED ME ON WHATSAPP!

As usual, my messages get delivered, read, but no response. Also, my calls don’t get picked anymore. As seen in the screenshot, “I will refund it as soon as possible” is the last message I got from this con artist (both message and call) @uchnino, and that message was sent to me July 4. I have called countless of times. Apparently, he stopped putting the number (sim) I have in his phone for some time. I tried calling him several times since then. It was always switched off.

Since then, to communicate with this scammer became difficult. He stopped picking my calls. There were a number of times he would switch off immediately he sees my call. He told me a lie of an ignoramus - about his friend changing his password. Even if your friend changes your password, how come you could not still set a new password withe change password request sent to your mail. He must have thought I’m as diminutive in intellect as he is. I must also inform that he promised to refund. SUCH A CALCULATIVE AND STRATEGIC SCAMMER! ALL THESE WERE DONE TO GIVE ME THE IMPRESSION THAT HE IS NOT A SCAMMER.

After some calls the next day, the stupid guy decided to send me a fake password. Before I forget to mention, prior to that, I called to ask for the account password, and he told me to wait until in the night when he gets home. Why? The idiot claimed he doesn’t know his password offhand, and that he saved it in his mail, so he has to check. I then told him the password he gave me is wrong, and he acted surprised. Don’t worry, it is a small problem with easy solution. So I requested for his email, so I can click on forgot password for him to change his password to something new. He gave me his email, I did it, and he was sent a mail for him to set a new password. I told him this, and it became difficult to reply my message (check the timeline in the screenshot). He later claimed he had reset his password and sent me another fake password. SUCH AN IDIOT!

So actually, I told my brother about Fiverr, and he was interested, so I decided to help him get an account. Just for sales to quickly come in. So I saw uchnino post on nairaland that he wants to sell his Fiverr account. It is a NO LEVEL account, so we bargained 5k. So I told my bro and he transferred the 5k to Uchnino Jakes. Uchnino Jakes confirmed he saw the money the next morning, and I noticed from that moment, the communication was no longer smooth. He read two different messages I sent without replying. I called and he gave some stories.
