Politics › Re: ''The North Is A Poverty Trap'' - Shettima by yungpowers(m): 7:25pm On Jan 16, 2016 |
vivalavida: The Northern States Governors Forum has said it is the responsiblity of Northern leaders to find opportunities for the people of the North.
This statement was made by Borno Governor, Kashim Shettima, the Chairman of the Forum whilst speaking on the issue of poverty during the 50th anniversary of the death of the late Premier of the north, Sir Ahmadu Bello. Shettima said, “Unemployment in the north is extremely high. Nigeria is a country of two nations, the South is much more stable and prosperous, the north on the other hand is in a poverty trap. In Nigeria, poverty wears a northern cap, if you are looking for a poor man, get somebody wearing a northern cap.”
“Sardauna was a leader of his own generation and every generation come up with its own style of leader. Sardauna did remarkably well for the North and for the nation, our duty, especially for those of us in the North is in our interest to invest in the people.
“Nigeria’s population will double in the next 23 years. By 2020, Nigeria’s population will be around 210 million. By 2030, there will be about 270million Nigerians and by 2050, when old men like me might not be around, the population will be around 440million.
“By then, we will be the third most populous nation on earth and most importantly, 70% of the population will be living in Northern Nigeria. Deforestation, desertification, joblessness, hopelessness, illetracy, unemployment, low access to health facilities are all recepies for disaster.
“It is in our enlightened self interest as northern leaders to invest in the people, to invest in agriculture, to create jobs because, there is a direct correlation with endemic poverty and most of the crisis threatening the north,” he added.

Buttoning sleeves as a camera pose.. LOL. Check that photo mix. It prompts the funny question... When will Rock stop buttoning his sleeves?
Do you know any other celebrity with a consistent pose..?
Wizkid used to major in the 'gun-to-the-head' pose. He will do that when you start minding your business. |

Have you seen this image? The story behind it represents the essential Governor Okezie Ikpeazu some of us know. You will recall that as a candidate for office of Governor he personally fed destitute at a charity event and some thought it was merely for votes. And now as governor....... Last December he was inspecting construction work at Okigwe road and as usual people gathered around him and gave his security details something to chew. In the midst of the cacophony an elderly woman screamed "Okezie gbaram christmas" and he stopped his convoy that was about moving, brought out money and gave her. I can confirm he did not give her N1k as speculated by some. His gift to the woman was at least enough to buy 1 bag of rice for christmas. Yesterday during the commissioning of the same road off Okigwe road I saw the woman and her neighbors dancing and telling people about "her son". She also prayed for him and you get the sense that the woman did not forget. The publication of this picture also reminded me of something that happened in the early days of his administration that I shared with readers: stopping his convoy to evacuate accident victims and even following them to the hospital to make sure payment of their bill does not delay treatment. Should I also re-tell the story of the hawkers because of who the governor stopped on the highway enroute Umuahia, shook their hands, told them to make sure they only hawk after school and promised to enroll them in skill acquisition program? Following that opportune meeting, the Abia State Education for Employment team registered those hawkers and they are currently undergoing skill acquisition training at BTC Aba alongside others. Registration of others is still ongoing and the objective is to train and employ at least 50,000 Abia youths. I guess real leadership shows in little things like caring about others, rich and poor. Governor Okezie is leading well, if so.
