Barca don't play with attacking midfielders but in the current set up Messi operates as such. Before Rakitic came to Barca he was an attacking midfielder at Sevilla. Even in the current set up, Coutinho can't thrive in the middle Arthur is better than him, so is Rakitic and De Jong, even Alena and Rafinha. They are all better midfielders than Coutinho not because they are more creative or they have more flair but because they are far far more hard-working.
See midfielders like Silva, the two of them, De Bruyne, Modric, Verrati and some others, they are so beautiful on the ball but they are all also very hard-working.
