A 32-year-old nursing mother, who was caught for alleged armed robbery in Lagos, has blamed her plight on the huge financial burden on her. According to the Lebanese woman, who identified herself as Amira Abudallahi, “my financial responsibility and the economic situation of the country led me into armed robbery”. “I have five kids but I am divorced. I just had a baby. The baby is six months old now. Since I started working with the gang, I have made over N12 million. I used part of it to buy a car and the other to pay my children’s school fees,” she said after being paraded by the Lagos State Police Command. “I am not proud of myself neither am I proud of what has happened. I just hope I can make a positive change on the society. I pray God will give me the opportunity to do so in future. I believe no one is above mistake and I believe God will grant me the grace. “ What I did was wrong, but nobody is above mistake. It was my financial responsibility and the economic situation of the country that led me into the gang. I live in Lekki. What I do for the gang is that I talk with prospective victims on the phone. Senator gives me the number, tells me what to say and then I call the victim. I have not built any house; I still live in a rented two-bedroom apartment in Lekki”. Amira was alleged to be a member of a six-man armed robbery gang which specialised in impersonating operatives of EFCC to rob bureau de change operators in Abuja and Lagos. Other suspects are Princewill Eze aka Senator Nwobodo, 55; Daniel Okpara, 30; Paul Irior, 37; Bassey Williams Ekpenyong, 39; and Royal Nwabuike, 32. They were arrested in Lagos, Ogun, and Abuja respectively. Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti, while parading the suspects, said that, on February 25, at about 5pm, he received information about a gang of armed robbers using the EFCC uniform and handcuffs to rob bureau de change operators in Abuja and Lagos of dollars, pounds sterling and Euro. Aderanti subsequently asked the state Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) commander, Abba Kyari, to launch a manhunt. The manhunt paid off as detectives tracked and arrested the suspected gang leader, Senator Nwobodo, in Ajah on February 27, at about 4pm. His alleged confession led to the arrest of Amira and other members of the gang. Vanguard learnt that detectives also recovered one Bryco59 pistol with serial no 930945 with six rounds of 5.56mm live ammunition, single barrel pistol cut to size with four live cartridges, a Toyota Highlander jeep ash colour with registration number, No LSR 110 DB, a Toyota Highlander jeep maroon colour with registration number No LSR 671 DK, a Toyota Sienna 2012 model, with registration number JJ424CQ, a Toyota Four runner with registration number KRD 449 DG, one Toyota Carmy saloon car unregistered, four million naira cash and 13,000 US dollars cash. The suspects were said to have a complete set of communication system of the police inside a vehicle which allowed them to intercept police communications. They also reportedly had police escort vehicles, police walkie talkie, EFCC vest used impersonate the anti-graft agencies officials. Suspects account Confessing to the crime, Eze said, “I didn’t recruit anyone of them into the gang; they all joined the gang on their own freewill because they are all adults. I am from Ikanu lGA, Enugu state. I am married with five children. I was into hospitality business before I ventured into robbery. The senator name is an appellation. I did not hold a political position. I live in a rented apartment at VGC. I did not own the house. Some of my daughters are in school abroad. “We have made about N15m. I have used the money to buy different property, but the police have seized them all. I bought different vehicles”. Another member of the gang, a dismissed police officer, Paul Irior, said: “We were not using guns. I was serving with CMS Mopol 2, Lagos. I built a house in Benin. I met the senator in 2014. My role was to act as policeman. I would wear uniform and pose with the fake EFCC officials. Any time they had a deal, they invited me. Sometimes, I got a million per operation. “They would bring the money to us in convenient places like hotels and banks. I also run a hotel. It is about five years now that we started the deals. I was arrested by the police four years ago for a similar issue, but secured bail by the court. Lagos State Police Command spokesman, Ken Nwosu, said efforts were on to arrest the only gang member still at large. Wow,this is organised crime at its best!....daughters schooling abroad?OMG,i imagine their shame when they will read this report. Five years without being caught must have given them wings to fly. So all the recovered property will belong to who?The cash? Who will take them? Source http://www.vanguard.com/2015/04/lebanese-mother-of-5-kids-says-she.html

The Independent National Electoral Commissions (INEC) in Emohua local government area has been set ablaze by unknown political thugs. Edo North, where Governor Adams Oshiomhole hails from, was under 24-hour Army lockdown, Saturday, as all the entry and exit points into the senatorial district were sealed by soldiers till the early hours of Sunday. Motorists and pedestrians who were caught unawares by the strange and unannounced military lockdown were stopped from moving and unlucky ones horsewhipped while others were made to face the indignity of being frog-jumped even late into the night of Saturday the 28th. While the Inspector-General of Police had announced a restriction of movement from 8:00am to 5:00pm on election day, motorists trapped at a military checkpoint at Agbede, the gateway into Edo North bordering Ewu in Edo Central told reporters that the soldiers manning the checkpoint said they have orders to stop movement in and out of Edo North till midnight. On his part, Governor Adams Oshiomhole said the army has been a huge problem as they had been used to rig for the ruling party at the centre. There were no fewer than twenty military checkpoints in Edo North, there were five checkpoints at Okpella bordering Kogi State, two checkpoints at Iyamho, which completely sealed off the Governor’s home, five points at Auchi; another point at INEC office in Auchi, a checkpoint at Jattu junction, another one close to the Jattu home of Hon Philips Shaibu, the APC House of Reps candidate, another point at Ikabigbo, Ogbonna, Fugar, and three points at Agenebode. There were also military checkpoints at Aviele and another one at Agbede, bordering Edo North and Edo Central. INEC officials were not spared a harrowing ordeal in the hands of the soldiers as those taking materials to Ward 10, Unit 1 Iyamho were around 9:00 am, Saturday, as they were stopped by soldiers who had laid siege to the home town of Governor Adams Oshiomhole. The INEC officials told reporters that were forced to sit on the ground, alongside their police escort for several hours. They were later allowed to leave after they got calls from their superiors. The soldiers said they were acting on strict orders from above. Even journalists were not spared the soldiers’ ordeal as the INEC accreditation cards and reflective jackets were ignored while each reporter was asked to produce his company ID cards. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/army-rig-for-the-ruling-party-oshiomhole/ |

Peace is a lost treasure at the Ekiti State University. Barely one week after the university resumed, the EKSU chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarked on a sit-at-home strike over the non-payment of their three months salaries (August, September and October). As the strike paralysed academic activities of the school, aggrieved students of the university quietly began beating their own war drum over the increment in tuition fees, coupled with the unwillingness of the management to conduct the students’ union election. In a closed door meeting held on November 4, 2014, the EKSU-ASUU declared an indefinite strike, citing concerns on unpaid salaries totaling three months. One of the lecturers who craved anonymity said, “We are not just owed three month salary, we have been owed allowances by the university under the leadership of Prof. Dipo Aina. We have been civil enough to enter into many deliberations with them but they don’t seem to understand that language of dialogue but strike. ASUU is truly sorry that a new session has to start this way but the management left us with no option. The students have just resumed and need to be in class already but how do you expect us to teach on empty stomach?” Investigation by our reporter revealed that while ASUU commenced an indefinite strike, students have called for the removal of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Aina. They accuse him of incompetence, anti-student policy and unnecessary delay of academic calendar. One of the students’ union leaders said, “Our demand is sane and tactical, in other schools, the higher up you go in class, the lesser your school fee but here in EKSU, the higher you go, the higher the fee you pay. That’s pure extortion”. Another student who craved for anonymity said: “They said our tuition fee is N50,000 but they add many other levies to the tuition fee like medical bills (N5000), internet (N5000), sports (N7000), field trip (N10000 and it also varies). Students of Geology, Psychology and others pay for field trip even after it had been captured in the tuition fee. Another student accused the management of anti-students’ policies, saying, “We are supposed to have an election this semester into all elective posts of the Students’ Union but the management said we can’t conduct an election because they don’t have a way to assert legitimate voters until 75% of students pay school fees. Which school in Nigeria does that?” One of the students, Ojekunle Niyi, said the election was supposed to have been held last semester but it was cancelled because they said we can’t conduct two elections in one academic session. “Let me take you through the history lane, our union was proscribed for about three years and was only unbanned in the first semester of last session. The Students’ Union constitution states that there shall be a Union election every second semester but because of the numerous hiccups caused by the university management, we had to conduct the election which brought in a management student union President in the first semester of last session”.
