7 THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU GET ADMITTED IN A TERTIARY INSTITUTION Not most new admitted students(fresher's) get someone to assist them in planning or advising them on steps to take, many go through alot of unnecessary stress and before they know it the test and exam is here. Many don't get to perform well academically in 100level because of this but I believe this writeup will help such students to take the right steps. Note: these seven step is just a guide as it may apply differently in different schools. Also you don't have to complete a step before taking the next because some steps may take more than a week 1) GET YOUR CREDENTIALS TOGETHER This is not suppose to come ahead of acceptance fee but it has been discovered that many admitted students don't check even their O'level result and combinations before registering for jamb and after going through all the pain, they get admitted and after paying the nonrefundable acceptance fee, they end up getting disqualified at the result verification section. It is advisable for students to check to know which other credentials the school require them to submit. You might not be able to get all at once but a list will help you to know which one you have and which one you need to get and to plan yourself. 2)PAY YOUR ACCEPTANCE FEE Depending on the deadline, admitted students don't have till the deadline before making payment. 3)GET AN ACCOMMODATION In some school, they get hostel and in some other school they get a rented apartment off campus either way, getting an accommodation is not an overnight task as this might take some more than a month to get one but as a student you need a place to rest your head after the days stress hence the best available option in most cases in squatting 'wink'. Get a place to squat. However in getting a place to squat you have to be careful about the bad and the cultist hence you put yourself through a stay of regret in school. The only way I see out is care and prayer 4) CAREFULLY FOLLOW YOUR REGISTRATION AND VERIFICATION PROCESS You don't necessarily have to finish everything at once. I have seen students collapsing on cue because of trying to meetup with registration deadline and my question is "if you die while registering, then who will go for your lectures"? You can get a place to sit while you maintain your cue if you have health issues. 5)START ATTENDING LECTURES AND STUDYING Don't wait until you complete your registration before attending lectures, don't wear yourself out, take things easy, you don't have any excuse for failure or poor academic performance. Once lecture commence start attending lectures while you continue with your registration. You also have to start studying as time wait for no one. 6)MAKE SOME FRIENDS You are not the only busy student. Make friends in class, on cue, in the hostel as some of them may give you working ideas, lend you lecture notes etc 7)START PREPARING FOR YOUR TEST The mid-semester test will come sooner than you expect. It is advisable students start preparing for their test once lecture begins, i mean while you are still going through your registration. www.sureinformationng.com |
Just as there are different types of cars; houses; clothes; watches etc there are also types of people. It is important to let us know that there are also different types of students. As a matter of fact every students we come across is most likely to exhibit either one, two of more of these personalities in some areas of their lives. Without wasting the time of my reader I will like to take these four categories of students one after the other. The Simple These type of students are characterized by their level of ignorance. They are mostly not aware of what is going on around them. They don't know the test is starting tomorrow, they don't know they have free access to internet after paying school fees, they don't know the materials to that assignment is in the library, they don't explore. These set of students don't read the notice board, they only ask others what is on it, they wait for event to unfold and make excuses of how they would have prepared well if they had known. They always feel like doing it all over again with comments like "how I wish I go back to secondary school" "how I wish I take that course again" . They learn their lessons after being punished for their ignorance. The Fool These type of students have very good knowledge of upcoming events, the best step and the results but unfortunately they still end up not preparing or ending the wrong way and get punished. Take for instance, this student has even before being admitted heard a lot about how tricky cultist are, how they lie, how they are involved in evil act and how they end up, such a student after gaining admission still goes ahead to encourage friends against it but guess what he/she still end up as a cultist and end like them. You have got to know this lecturer or teacher that whatever he repeat is coming in the assessment, such a student still end up failing that same question and in some cases you hear them saying "I knew this man will set this question"....lol These type of students in most cases don't have the opportunity to do it right. Hence, they serve as example for the simple and the mocker The mocker These types of students see nothing good in anything and see everything as a subject of laughter. When they see others studying, they mock them. These students mock their mates when they see them; coming from the library, working with a group, representing the school, doing business, saving, cooking, building connections, praying name it. Nothing is important to them, since they believe they are the best they can be and nothing others do can encourage them. They are skilled in insulting people, bullying and mocking people. Some of the people in this category are so skilled that sometimes before mocking others they start from themselves. They never seek to do anything new, they find themselves in a satisfied state of productivity. They learn their lessons when other mockers mock them for their failure The wise these type of students are aware of coming events and take advantage of it. They are the celebrated, the creative, the outstanding, the enduring and the courageous student. They have one common goal- reaching their destination(achieving their goals). They know they will pass through a lot to get there and they are willing to pay the price. It is good to state conclusively that no student is perfectly or completely wise as we may exhibit some of the aforementioned at one area of our life and another in yet another area but the main purpose of writing this article is to encourage students to become more wise in every areas of their lives in other to become a better student and a better person driving our nation in the right path. www.sureinformationng.com Comments and opinion please? |
Its so painful how many students gets stranded some few days after getting some sort of support, work&study or allowance from source like parents, sponsors, few work here and there. Most painful when we don't even knowhow the money has suddenly disappear. Don't look far, see few ways students waste money: 1. PAYING FOR SIMPLE REPAIRS Basic home appliance and electronics maintenance is something few students learn, but students have to learn that calling an engineer to fix an extension socket will take away some few bucks from our wallet. Learn to make simple repairs 2. CABLE TV SUBSCRIPTION Many students don't see school as school and home as home. Some of us as students need to know that we will have to miss some of our favorite shows when we go back to school. Yes, thank God for some cheap cable TV with cheap subscription packages but the fact still remains that the monthly subscription gets few bucks from our pocket and still end up as a distraction to our study. Check your income before buying a cable TV 3. LEVERAGING ON POS EASY PURCHASE ACCESS If you always use your card to pay for things, it’s a lot easier to spend more than you intend to because you aren’t seeing the money. You just press some buttons and boom, purchase made. You might not be so liberal with your funds if you had to watch the cash leave your wallet. Many of us smile as we make our online purchases but feel a bit surprise when the bank send us our statement of account or SMS alert. Make a scale of preference, always review your monthly income and expenditure 4. EXOTIC HOUSE I have seen students from average homes living in 2bedroom flat, fine if you can afford it, but won't it sound reasonable to invest such money? Some also spend so much on home accessories and pimping all in a bid to impress others and finally end up getting stranded. Get a portable and comfortable place. 5. TOYING WITH YOUR HEALTH You think it won’t happen to you, but it will. Many students don't take care of themselves. Personal hygiene is very important, you really do need to maintain your teeth’s health or you’ll be paying for dental work before you graduate or later in life, and that can get painfully expensive. Massive consumption of alcohol and junk food habits, and just not taking proper care of yourself in general will all come back to bite you, no matter how strong you think you are. 6. VISITING THE GROCERY STORE MORE THAN ONCE IN A WEEK A store is not a library! Many students visit the store more than the library. Its not a bad idea to visit the grocery store but we have to control the number of times we do so. If possible, we can make a list of what is needed and stick to it. Because you run out of one or two items is not an excuse to visit the grocery more than once a week. You don't also need to buy everything that looks good in the grocery store. Make a scale of preference 7. NOT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF DISCOUNTED WHOLESALE PRICE This is especially good money-saving advice if you’re a student. Student and college discounts abound, they just might be hidden. Just because a company or establishment doesn’t explicitly advertise student discounts doesn’t mean they don’t have any; ask an employee, or, if you’re making a purchase online, use a search engine to see if there are any student discounts or programs you weren’t aware of. For students who school in towns where the market days are observed on specific days e.g five days market etc, you can take advantage of those market days to make your purchases, by doing so you save some extra money in your wallet. It is also good to make purchases in wholesale price. 8. MAKING BRAND BASED PURCHASING Store and generic brands have to be one of the most underused ways to save money across a range of products. From food, to skincare, to medicine. Check the labels; in most cases, the ingredients are pretty much identical, but you don’t have to spend money on the big brand names. Also, if you have prescriptions, you can sometimes ask your pharmacist for the generic version of your medications. They work just the same as the brand name, and can save you quite a bit of cash. Its not a sin to buy other brands 9. DISORGANIZATION Being disorganized has cost you money at some point. Losing chargers and cables, misplacing expensive jewelry, forgetting where you left your keys and having to pay a locksmith to get into your house. If the mess itself hasn’t motivated you to declutter and get organized, link back on all the times you lost or misplaced something and ended up spending money in some way because of it. Then think of how many of those times you ended up finding the missing item later and realizing you spent that money for nothing. Yeah, I thought that might get your attention. http://sureinformationng.com/2015/10/18/9-ways-students-waste-money-possible-solutions/ Can you please add to the list? |
