I laugh. Being an ex-student of the university (English Department, both for undergrad and post grad), I get what you mean. However, there are things you wouldn't know except you are close to the cabals in the institution. I knew when Afolayan got his PhD, and his 'academic party', it's nearly impossible for him to be a Prof in that institution. The dynamics of the institution, the 'we' and 'them' thing is too much, and it promotes sycophancy and mediocrity. The genesis of the problem dates back to pre 2001, when the 'we' (purported owners of the powers that be) set out to root out the them (the stubborn but academically sound set). Anyway, I wish them the best, but I pity Afolayan though. An academic institution ain't for politics but research, teaching and learning. If I were him, I would stay low; he wasn't part of the pre-2001 struggle, so why get entangled?
