The 37-year old woman from Southeast Brazil had received prenatal treatment and assistance from several midwives. While she was 41-week pregnant, she was rushed to the hospital because she felt 'labor' pains.

According to the hospital's director, Rosalice Almeida, the doctors did not find the baby's heartbeat, and they rushed her to the operating room to perform a cesarean section (c-section). To their shock, after the emergency surgery, there was no baby. Her womb was empty.

Her 23-year-old husband told reporters that this was her second 'pregnancy' without a real baby. The first pregnancy, she claimed that the baby died in the hospital, but she had no death certificate. Her case was ruled out as psychological and she was referred to psychiatric care.

Could this be real? Perhaps, you're still in doubt. Well, there was a similar case in Brazil last year December.

19-year-old Layane Santos proved that she was pregnant. The nurses recorded the growing size of her baby, 7lbs and 42cm. They even confirmed it was a baby girl. Her 28-year-old husband, Lourival Alves, had moved to a bigger house and spent money on baby stuff.

After complaining about abdominal pain and blood loss, the doctors performed an emergency c-section and found no baby. She accussed the maternity hospital in Sao Paulo, southeast of Brazil of stealing her baby.

Even her kitchen assistant, Ultimo Segundo, Ms. Santos's kitchen assistant was a witness of the ultra-sound scans. According to Brazil's Tribunal Hoje newspaper, Santos received prenatal treatment, yet there was no baby in her womb either. Since the scans confirmed the gender, surely, there's a baby, right?

Her case was also dismissed as psychological.

So what's the deal? Before you get very spiritual, let's ask, "Is false pregnancy real?"

According to medical experts, there is a medical condition called Pseudocyesis, also known as phantom (false) pregnancy. A woman with this condition experiences the usual pregnancy symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, breast enlargement, weight gain, and bigger stomach - i.e. abdominal extension.Although the urine sample shows a negative result for pregnancy, the woman will continue to insist she is pregnant, making the job of her midwife extremely difficult.

Cause: Pseudocyesis is more common in women who are in their late 30s or 40s or women who are desperately seeking to have a baby after trying for a long time. Pseudocyesis has also been attributed to a temporary hormonal imbalance which causes an emotional reaction, especially when a woman have lost a pregnancy or a baby.

Treatment: women who are suffering from this condition need sympathy, family support, and the support of their partners.

This is a cock & roaster story. The woman is either psychotic or is trying to deceive the husband. The health workers are either quacks or grossly negligent of their duties.. It is a serious professional malpractice to open up a woman's abdomen for a caesarean section when there is no pregnancy. The health workers should be investigated.
