Germany player to watch: Bastian Schweinsteiger. Having played in a group that boasted attacking talents in abundance, Schweinsteiger was required to rein in his marauding forward runs a bit in Germany's first three games in order to maintain defensive balance. However, against Greece it is likely that the midfielder, set to win his 94th cap, will be unleashed from his midfield patrol and given a little more freedom to swarm upfield and make the sort of ghosting late runs he has become renowned for over the years.

Greece player to watch: Dimitris Salpingidis. Down to ten men and losing 1-0 to Poland, Salpingidis' goal from the subs' bench secured Greece a vital opening point and ensured he was picked for the subsequent two games. The PAOK forward still boasts lightning pace and will suit the counter-attacking game Santos' side will have to play if they are to have any chance of progress to the semi-finals

KEY BATTLES

Thomas Muller v Giorgos Tzavelas.
The threat of Russia's Alan Dzagoev was heavily hyped up prior to Greece's final Group A game, but left-back Giorgos Tzavelas helped nullify the in-form attacking midfielder to lay the foundations for what was a famous victory. Against Germany, the Monaco left-back will come up against another precocious right-sided player. After bursting on to the international scene at the 2010 World Cup, Muller has had a more low-key tournament this time. In South Africa, he contributed five goals and three assists but in Ukraine he has not managed any, while his 46.3 touches per game and shooting accuracy of 33% also compare unfavourably to totals of 57.5 and 60% two years ago. However, as his recent Champions League final goal testifies, the Bayern Munich man has a habit of snatching crucial goals and is a threat both in wide positions and in the air from set-pieces.

Theofanis Gekas v Holger Badstuber
The Bayern Munich centre back was perhaps considered one of the weaker links in the German team before the tournament. However Badstuber has proved critics wrong and his pairing with Mats Hummels has been impenetrable. It should be a relatively straightforward game for Badstuber as it is unlikely that the Greeks will be allowed much room to attack the Germans. Gekas at 32 is one of the veteran’s for the white and blue and since Giorgos Karagounis is suspended, the pressure falls on him to make the most of the rare opportunities that come his way if Greece are to have any chance. Badstuber should be able to keep Gekas under control.

Mesut Ozil v Konstantinos Katsouranis
If Greece are to have any chance in this match Katsouranis will have to stick to Ozil from start to finish. Ozil plays a crucial creative role in the space behind Mario Gomez and will look to draw the Greek defenders out and create gaps. If Greece are to stay solid and frustrate the Germans into submission Katsouranis will need to deny the tricky attacker any space and try to instil the dogged spirit that inspired him and his nation to winning the European Championships in 2004.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos v Mario Gomez
Mario Gomez is currently joint top scorer at the tournament with three goals and will be looking to add to his tally against Greece. He is a big physical presence but also has a deft touch as his exquisite turn for his first against Holland demonstrated. Papadopoulos will have to maintain the dogged back-to-the-wall defending that has helped his side progress from their group and stay tight to Gomez. With Greece’s poor goal scoring record it seems likely that Germany will only need one or two goals to win, so Papadopoulos’ job is even more crucial.
