Music like drama is a collaborative endeavour. Those songs you love and listen to are not just a unilateral product of the singers; some prolific minds help to make the songs a popular and worthy listen. There have been producers in Nigeria with cult-like following. People like OJB Jazzreel, Don Jazzy, eLDee Da Don and K-Solo have earned their stripes over the years as hit makers. Now, some new talents like Young D, Samklef and Masterkraft others are moving on to the big stage, giving the Music, like film making, is established and popular beat makers a run for their experience and protean prolificacy. Lets take a peer at these new producers. |

5. Shizzy In his early 20s, Oluwaseyi ‘Shizzy’ Akerele is undoubtedly the youngest on this list. Yet, his stellar list of hits will make an older and accomplished producer do a double take. Shizzy produced the breakthrough, monstrous hit single of silver-spoon singer, Davido, Dami Duro. There have been other songs along the way. Speaking on why he decided to go into music production, he says, “Music has always been a passion for me since I was a kid and I started out from the church playing different instrument.” Shizzy, who would later study Information Technology at the University of South Africa, returned home around 2010 working with Bigiano and Wizkid. “Producing music is an interesting craft but you just have to stand out by doing what others don’t do. That way, you can last and become renowned,” he says. |

4.Sarz Poverty has an uncanny way of making one discover one’s talent. Poverty, it was, that actually drove Osaretin Osabuohien aka Sarz into music production. Good enough for him, he had the flair and passion for it. And it was pretty easy settling down to work. Those were the days when the little he made from the beats he produced had to go into fending for himself and family. He sold his first beat a week after he made it and named it after himself- ‘Beat by Sarz’. Since then, there has been no looking back for Sarz. Things have changed now as the young man is, without much ado, one of the highest earning producers in the country. Sarz, who believes he is the biggest producer in Africa, is one producer who has put in a lot into his craft over the last few years with well over 70 tracks to his credit. Including Jooh oh by Jahbless and Dagrins' Kondo. The Edo State native is currently signed to Trybe Records. |

3. Young D Until recently, many did not know this young beat maker, Akintewe Feyisayo, who earned the alias, Young D, (which actually means Young Dre), because of his obsession and reverence for American legendary rapper- producer, Dr Dre. Or well. He was only known by artistes, not the general public. But his days of anonymity are now, for a fact, a thing of the past. Young D is the deft hand behind dancehall star and Niger Delta music ambassador, Timaya’s new album, Upgrade. Even before the album was released this June, two slick and smoky singles, Malo Nogedi and Illuminati, had been radio and club favourites esp. in Port Harcourt, heralding the producer to a new level of acceptance while consolidating the singer’s. What other validation or acknowledgement can a young producer get other than that from the prima donna of music production in Nigeria, Don Jazzy? Last Saturday, the Mavin Records boss and successful producer tweeted to his almost 300, 000 fans across the world, “Timaya and Young D are on some different kind of fire mehnn; heavy jamz of life.” Timaya during an interview stated that it takes the Computer Science graduate of the Lagos City Polytechnic as much time it takes to shower to produce a hit song. Interestingly, Young D is also the producer of the wave- making single, Alaye Mi, by LKT and has produced songs like Give Me the Choco by Sean Terro, E Go Better For every man by Orishefemi, Delight by 2shotz and Ko Ma Gbon by Ay.Com. In his mid-20s, Young D confesses that he never learnt the art of production, “I just got fascinated by music because I set out to be an artiste and I would hang around studios.” Currently working on his debut single, Young D is also the CEO of MurderBeatz Vibez. |

2. Masterkraft Sunday Nweke, the lad that would later be known as Masterkraft in and around the Nigerian entertainment industry, had an epiphany of sort when he was 11; “I envisioned myself among the best music producers in the world after being introduced at that early age to American hip hop,” he says. Whilst the global renown has not really come, Masterkraft is a leader by miles among his peers. He has not only worked with Nigeria’s finest entertainers like Banky W, Jaywon, Flavour, WizKid, Eldee, Bracket, J.Martins, and Sound Sultan, he also produced the international Sunday Nweke, remix of Star Quest winner, The Pulse’s So Tey, featuring American rapper, Busta Rhymes. His production credits include Fine Lady – Lynxx ft Wizkid, Girl- Bracket ft Wizkid, No Lele by Wizkid; Facebook Love by Essence and Jaywon, and Jawo Jawo by Goldie. Kicking off his career as a producer with Kennis Music, Masterkraft has also worked with Africa Magic, Hennessey Artistry, MTV Base and Nu Age. He is a music/band director and at present, the music director of a contemporary gospel group known as Tim Godfrey and The Xtreme Crew. |

Samklef Arguably, the biggest producer to emerge in the music scene in the last one year, Samuel Oguachuba or Samklef, as he is widely known, is one of the more respected producer- singers in Nigeria at the moment. Drawing inspiration from acclaimed American producers like Timbaland and Kanye West and countryman, Don Jazzy, SamKlef has contributed immensely to the new sound of contemporary Nigerian music, producing popular hits like Wizkid’s “Tease Me” and “Don’t Dull”, Vector’s “Kilode”, D’Prince’s “Jonzing World.” and “Durella’s “My Life”. Samklef has not done badly as a singer either. With the release of his debut album, “Noni” in 2010, with hit track “Molowo noni” ft Iceprince, Wizkid and D’Prince, and a repackaged international edition “Nonilising” in January 2011, he has positioned his craft as one to watch and court. Before finally deciding to start his own outfit, Noni Records circa 2010, he had worked with entertainment outfits like Sound Factory, Flow Records, Smashers Records, Back 2 Black and Mindfalls. |
