WIMAX stands for World Interoperability for Microwave Access. Its a new technology that would allows companies to provide wireless access to subscribers within a 30 mile radius. I have been searching for info about the projected consumer costs of the system (I believe it would surpass WiFi , VSAT, DSL and all those other technologies.)
If anybody has more info please <snip> reply .

I want to know where it might have been deployed and what was the consumer cost? I am trying to determine which would be more cost effective in a housing estate environment(whether coaxial cable or WiFi or WIMAX).

The base station i very expensive (in the $xxx, xxx range for now), i think this has to do with the fact that the technology is still very much in the beta stage. Am interested in that stuff too only that the cost implication is just a no go area for now.
I hope the price will crash once it become widely available.

Deploying WIMAX isn't as expensive as you think. At the moment we have 2 fully operational in locations here in Nigeria at locations already- Delta State and in Port Harcourt.
I am presently working on a pilot project for an estate here in Lagos as well. Average cost for Wimax for a coverage cost for mos tproject types like an Estate setup - E.G Lekki Phase 1 is about $70,000
If you 're commited and intend to deploy wifi . A coverage area say VGC Estate can be in the range of $25,000

I have heard about it and it surpasses other technologies. The problem is in term of maintenance. I dont know yet if it has started working hear in Nigeria. t is a bit expensive but very reliable.

I believe Wimax is the natural progression in Broadband Wireless Access. I am looking at deployment of Wimax in Nigeria and interested in finding out how vibrant the market is and who are the major players.
