well i was maybe gearing towards nigerian american people. Like myself im trying to get into my culture HARD but its not working. My parents tried to teach me yoruba but i have a little accent that wont let it happen. but i understand it clearly. And i have cousins that are the same way. We all attend nigerian churches and from the way we dress, the way we talk, to the way we play music its not fitting to our surroundings, when we are around our family and other nigerians. . But we are trying tho, we just know its going to take a while. A LOOOOOONNNNGG while

There is nothing wrong with being americanized.
I understand what you mean though. My Little Cousin Mami and Noel speak better American English then me and they are very young. The last time i called them i couldn't believe it was them. They were not even born in the states. They were born in Ghana but talks like they were born here.
The Young people get americanized really fast. When i came to the states, i got americanized in 6 months. When i talk people think i am from New York because i have the thick New York accent. I try to tell them i am from west Africa but they find it hard to believe.
I also prefer American things over African things. Ex Food,TV, Movies, Clothes, etc
My Brothers are so americanized i think they forgot how to speak Liberian language.
To tell you the truth, being americanized is not a hard thing.

I love and prefer African things over American things.
I very happy my parents named me an Igbo name and I tell them that.
I try to make sure Americans pronoun my name.
I took the time to learn American names so they should take the time to learn my name.
Born and raised in America

Yes, there is. If you travel to a different culture and live for a decent amount of time in that culture you will be changed in spite of yourself. However, there are individuals who are easily impressionable. These types are also the ones that panic easily when faced with a challenging situation. The immediate response in them is to alter a situation within the psyche so that a new reality can be accomodated and adapted to more rapidly. The definition and expectation of success in Nigeria is wrong. We view success as the individual ability to imitate foreign values, especially western ones. So a Nigerian with a foreign western accent is perceived as a successful person and is paraded around the village with pride. This sets bad example and a wrong model for those with dreams to travel to Europe and America.
On arrival, the influence of their new environment may force them to quickly abandon their own familiar ways for the new and unfamiliar way of doing things. The goal is to be the new hero when they return back home, looking, speaking and stunting like a white man. The adaptation is done more for its utilitarian benefit, than for its practical purpose. They force very hard to sound phonetically foreign, they carry a hard image and easily throw out vain and vulgar words in simple communication and so on. At the end of the day, all they have truly learnt is habits that the mainstream society of their host country disapproves of; slangs and bangs. The irony of it all is that the new hero of our village is a replica image of the slum hoodrat in America and Europe.
Far from this, there are truly Americanized ways that can be employed to our benefits to gain access into the mainstream of global economy and socialization.
