« on: May 14, 2005, 04:23 PM »

I'am still expecting to get this book. It got critical reviews and was short listed last year for the Booker Prize. Has anybody read it. Here is a small excerpt.

Sounds like the case of an african father "losing control" of his first born, and not being happy about it.  ALl of a sudden your little baby is all grown up and wants to live life in his own way, but being an African father you're going to tighten your grip on him until he finally rebels spectacularly and breaks free!

I want to read it already!

Yeah, Iit shows the dictatorial tendency in each of us. We tend to think only our leaders as dictators but every family is headed by one I think.

Where to Get 'Purple Hibiscus' in Lagos, Nigeria
« #7 on: August 09, 2005, 01:56 PM »

Purple Hibiscus is an exceptional book written by an exceptional person!  Purple hibiscus is all over the place (especially in Lagos).  It used to Cost 3,500 Naira last year when it was first published, i.e a hard back cover and it was published in the UK.

A Nigerian Publishing House, Farafina have come up with a paperback copy and that costs 500 Naira. In Lagos you can get it from Quintessence, which is at Falomo Shopping Complex and from Bookworm, on Ajose Adeogun Street in V.I. You can also get it at Mega Plaza and at Nu Metro media Store. Please don't buy the Paperback for more than 500 bucks oh!

P.S: The Hard back now goes for 3,000 Naira.

Not if you know the right people to ask Seun.  In Nigeria, anything is possible, as long as you have the dough.

I quite enjoyed this book.  It was chilling in some parts but it was a great read.  I borrowed it from the local library here in Canada or I would have gladly sent it to people who are looking for it.

Then read the excerpt from the first post.  It's mostly about domestic abuse in an African setting.

Just finished reading the book (the discussion here made me want to get my hand on it asap)

I especially liked the very rich, sensitive language she uses.

I feel it is above all a call to tolerance and openness and against religious fundamentalism. The contrast between the two households is very telling

I feel extremely proud of this young 19year old nigerian. Nigeriand are being reecognized for their work(other than the famous Achebe and Soyinka)
There's another good author also young, Helen Oyeyemi(I believe) wrote Icarus girl.
I highly recommend the book

I've read Purple Hibiscus,it made an interesting reading.
I bought my own copy at CSS bookstore at CMS in Lagos for N700 i think, sometimes last year.
I couldnt drop it until I'd raced through it.
By the way who has read Waiting For An Angel by Helon Habila?
Its another lovely book about those cruel years under the military rule especially Gen Abacha.
I bought my own copy in one bookfair that held in Unilag last year while in Lagos.

I read the book about 3 months ago.It is excellent.Eventually each generation finds their literary voice in my opinion the leading literary lights of Nigerians born post independence are Adichie, Ike Oguine and Helon Habila. The sad thing is that they in most cases have to leave Nigeria for better success in their craft. I am however not aware of any upcoming poet who is as good as Osundare or Odia Ofeimun in this generation.
Nice book she got there is really good for our generation.
I am proud to be a Nigerian

I read purple hibiscus last year and loved it.

The prose is very descriptive and evocative, when she describes stuff, u can taste it on your tongue and she wields words to devastating effect. It's simply about a domineering father who physically abuses and batters his wife and two kids and the effect this has on the family. They all reacted in different ways, but one thing was clear, they all still loved him.

The title comes from the flowers planted in their compound at home. Nice characterization and incredible plot.

After that, try reading '26a'. Another incredible book, but with a darker subject matter.

i read Purple Hibiscus after i stumbled on it in a bookstore last year.I bought the book and have been back at the store 7 times to but it again, not because I want to own 8 copies of it,but because no one who's come to my place and read a bit of it,and then borrowed it has returned it.Its one special book, such a well-told story that you feel like you're in Kambili's head. When i read it the first time,I simply couldn't put it down till I finished it.The second time,I made myself read only a few pages every few hours, but I still finished it in less that 30 hours.
Does she have any other books out and available in Nigeria?

I got Purple Hibiscus from the library, went on to buy a hard back copy (for keeping well), and have read it four times since buying my copy. It is that good. I think Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie writes like Chinua Achebe and her writing is very evocative. There is a passage in the book where she describes the smell of rain and it took me right back to my childhood in Zaria. If you haven't read it, you should.

I have read a lot and I have to say that this young Nigerian is simply world class. She has a new book out. It's called Half of a Yellow Sun. I have it (hard back again Smiley) and can't wait to settle down to read it.
