15-year-old girl donates 10,000 shoes to poor childrenBy Tobi Soniyi, AbujaPublished: Wednesday, 30 Jul 2008 A 15-year-old Nigerian girl based in Philadelphia, United States of America, Miss Chierika Ukogu, has donated 10,000 pairs of shoes to Nigerian children who have no shoes. Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, Ukogu said that she visited Nigeria from the US in 2003 and was shocked to see children walking barefooted. She said she was moved with compassion and when she returned to the US, she started soliciting for shoes and sandals. Some 7,000 of the shoes were shared to the motherless children’s homes in and around the Federal Capital Territory while the balance of 3,000 were to be distributed to indigent kids in Ukpor and its environs, in Anambra State. She said, “About five years ago, I travelled to Nigeria and I went to Ukpor, my home town, and I noticed many children walking around with no shoes in this modern day. “The opportunity came last year when I was invited to a business camp in the USA where I wrote several articles on the plight of the Nigerian indigent children and my experience in Ukpor.” Ukogu, a student of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Philadelphia, said her articles and proposal at the camp attracted publications in several US- based journals. “After the publications, I was able to collect over 10,000 flip-flops (shoes) from donors through my school, and my father volunteered a section of his garage where they were stored. “The donations have been coming in their thousands because of the willingness of the people to help me in my plight.” To make the project formal and to facilitate the shipment of the shoes to Nigeria, Ukogu said that she formed a non-governmental organisation duly registered in the USA, known as Flip Flops for Africa.
