I'm a very down to earth & frank person,the examples you have given are not my ideas of dotcom startups,If you want to be sure why not take statistics of hits to your websitses on www.alexa.com

Not every website is a DOT COM venture so this talk about bulding sites in 2 months or 3 day isn't relevant.

Ungoing Projects are not just disclosed on forums,soon we go live once we have sorted out both business logic and development .

@tunde,

I am not sure Afam has gone over the board with what he posted. I see it as his own
contribution to the post you started. I am sure he is just trying to help.

Do you have something going on between the two of you or what?

@tundewoods,

Well, thanks for pointing out the issue of hits on a website, that is one area that successful websites don't waste their time on because you can have 1 millions hits to your website every day without anyone buying from you whereas I can have just 20 in any given day with 3 or 4 buying from me.

What's the difference? You don't make money but I do.

I get nothing less than 4 - 8 calls a day from people to provide services to them, they all get to know about the websites online and on the average about half of them become clients.

I will give you a typical example today, someone called and said she wanted an inverter for the house and after doing all the necessary calculations I told her the cost which she agreed to. Then I told her that she needs to change all her bulbs to energy saving type and she told me that she had already done so after reading up the advice on the website some time ago, that she is only interested now in paying and having the system installed this week.

That is what useful websites do, they help solve problems.

My comments are in good faith and that you have chosen to see it as a challenge to your own skills is rather unfortunate but be informed that I never compare myself to others as we are all unique in our own different ways.

Good luck with your venture but don't rely too much on hits as they are mere stats.

Focus on developing applications that make sense to the customer. Your site must be task focused.

NB: If it takes me less than 1 week to develop a web application from scratch I don't think I should feel bad about that anyway, its all about steady improvement while being bold enough to accept the things I know and the things I don't know. Humility is key.

@afam
I sure feel you and honestly this isn't about disputes Ok,i respect your views and opinions.

I guess we are all developers in here and back to your advice on focusing on applications that make sense to the customer,i am aware of that and if you noticed from previous post i've been emphasing that.

I'm also of the view that our web appliations must be focused and result oriented

Sure humility is key,

Blessed are the meek for they shall in herit the earth.

cheers, im enjoying every bit of this

is it me or has everyone missed the point that without high internet penetration in an environment it is virtually impossible to become a successful dot com business in that particular market.

Back to the main question, I have heard of several venture capital companies/funds but the VC business is in the early stages here. What we typically have here is more of business angels (private individuals with lots of dosh) who I feel are better for our market because after investing in you and your business they actively seek to open doors for you by putting you in touch with their business networks and as we all know its all about who you know knowing who they know! [quick advice, if you are going to get an angel, make sure its someone who is busy and wont be interfering constantly]

@ Afam,

I checked out your new website. While I admire your courage, and want to encourage you to keep developing web applications yourself, your new site might get into trouble very soon. You are being hit by spambots because your reply form (for comments) is too bare. You should find a way to prevent spambots in your coding. Research into captcha, and us it to good effect while keeping your site user friendly, or if you may introduce registration on your site before posts and comments can be made (understand though that this is not very user friendly). If you need any guidance, email me at care4dele (at) yahoo.com.

Just a note of advise.

Ciao,
Dele

There is no doubt, there is a lot of computer and internet talent in Nigeria, but in building an Internet startup location really matters. we are paying more than 10 times what founders in other startup hubs pay for bandwidth.

Also you have to plan on how your new venture makes money from day 1. If you focus too much on scalability, you startup may grow to large for you to support and getting funding for startups in these times is not easy even in Silicon Valley. Focusing too much on scalability without a business model is one of the mainreasons most of the early dotcoms crashed.

I have been learning about startups for almost 9 years now and I blog my experiences at naijastartups..com

Fast forward to November 2011 and the startups that are supposedly doing so well are no more. Case in point, enownow.com, whogobuy.com, oh, and afamite.com
