Re: Meaning Of The Name Dabiri? by Abagworo(m): 8:17am On Oct 27, 2011
Dabiri has most likely Igbo or Ijaw roots.I will like to know the Yoruba meaning. In Igbo it means "lean on" or "trust".Dabiri,Dabirim,Dabirichi,Dabirinna,Dabirichukwu.It is a rear surname but exists in Igboland.I have also met someone from Bayelsa that goes by that name.If it has no Yoruba meaning then they likely have Igbo or Ijaw roots.

Dabiri "Dabiri"(Da-bi-ri/Da-ibi-ri)  means "first to discover a place and settle in" in yorubaland. It was from the arabs the yoruba got the name from just like many other yoruba names like Haruna (fulani) sekiru etc

Dabiri is more or less used among the indigenes of lagos, they are used among the Aworis, Egun and Ijebus. Most other part of yoruba land do not use it.

You can ask more dabiris here

Interesting, Dabiri is an arab name but has a meaning in yoruba, meaning first to settle in

this analysis is wrong wink wink angry
da - single handedly
bi - here
ri - found
Meaning: i discovered/ found this place alone

But let's leave dabiri for now - what does JAKANDE mean? grin grin shocked shocked

I strongly doubt the veracity of the meaning your provided. Any links?

I use to believe the name has ijaw roots as a result of the suffix 'biri'.

There was a story of a man from rivers who trace Abike Dabiri to Lagos when she was still working with NTA to claim her as his long lost niece. Unfortunately, Abike denied him.

IJAWS also bear the name too. To break it down

Da - Father

Biri - side

Taken together, it means The Paternal Family. . . .ie it connotes a relationship on the father's side of the family

I know an Ijaw person bearing that name.

why wouldn't abike deny him  undecided

I have told you the meaning in yoruba, It might mean another in Igbo or Ijaw or whatever

That is the meaning in Yoruba

dabiri in ijaw means fathers side

dabiri in igbo mean lean on

Dabiri in yoruba mean the founder of a settlement

it each is own.

There is no correlation between Dabiri of the yorubas and edos and dabiri of the igbo or the ijaws

Dabiri, tinubu, obanikoro, ajose, williams etc all this are awori names

Anyone here recalls some year back when a middle-aged Ijaw man by the surname Dabiri came looking for a relative of his and he was introduced to Abike Dabiri and she burst his bubble telling him she was Yoruba and couldn't possibly be his relative? grin

It was shown on NTA Newsline then cool

I remember as well

well that is what happens when you claim,

Like every culture in Nigeria, we share similar names among others

in fact I just found out that Ikeja is an Igbo name

Ikeja is also a yoruba name. so you see the similarity

Abike is a Nupe name

it also a yoruba and edo name

The problem with some of you is the belief that only your dialect exists. You have really annoyed mr with what you just posted.I have never even heard of "Dabere" but I know it might exist somewhere in Northern Igboland.I only know Dabiri.

Most correct. I can only guess "Jakande" is one of those names whose pronunciation has been bastardized by foreigners and the true meaning has been lost - like "Moremi" which I surmised to be "Omo re mi"; a variation of "Omo wu mi" from Osun/Ekiti. In a similar manner I think "Jakande" might be "Ija kan de" or "Oja kan de". Play around with variations and you have your best fit.

I kept wondering What? Why? Which? When? How & Where? The name 'Dabiri' came to be associated with the Yorubas?
I'm an Ijaw guy that understands the Yoruba language perfectly.
Dabiri is an Ijaw name through and true.
Da - Father
Biri - land, side, middle, centre, stomach or half (depending on the context in which it is used)
Therefore, Dabiri should mean: Father's Land, Father's Side, Father's Stomach, Father's Centre or Father's half depending on the context of use. But most often, it is used to mean Father's House in my native Ijaw language.
As for the Dabiris found in Ikorodu LGA of Lagos State, I'm 100% sure that they are settled by the river bank or waterside, which most likely depicts that they are of Ijaw origin that went fishing around the water.
You can check with anyone WHO KNOWS THEIR HISTORY VERY WELL. I know what I am saying.

Very funny. So because a name means something in your language then it can't have it's own meaning in another language? Me too I always knew "Nwobodo" was Yoruba meaning "searching for a va.gi.na to fvck". Go figure.

Interesting, Dabiri is an arab name but has a meaning in yoruba, meaning first to settle in
if the name "Dabiri" in Yoruba region is from Arab as you said, then what is the meaning in Arabic language?? If the meaning is the same that means it is not a Yoruba name but Arab name as we have Suleiman, Ibrahim, etc.

my dear you are wrong, we have many dialects in Alaigbo e.g Onicha, Ikwerre, Ngwa, Awka, Asaba, Okija, Enugu etc,  Dabiri/Dabere means "lean on" in Igbo language.
