A Question For Perfectionists - Does Perfection Impede Improvement? by Ayietim(m): 5:16pm On Jul 08, 2021
George Will says it does. According to him,

“The pursuit of perfection often impedes improvement.”

Why does perfecrion slow down improvement?

Because perfecrion hardly leads to progress and it’s progress that leads to improvement. The quest for perfecrion on the other often leads to discouragement.

People who often set out to achieve perction through the channel of perfecrion seldom see light at the end of the tunnel.

Not getting the results they want erects a pillar of hopelessness between where they are and where they want to be.

With no hope of success in sight, a perfectionist would most likely be unhappy to continue. This is because perfection kills the enthusiasm not to give up until progress is made.

The reverset is case for someone that is driven by the search for success rather than by the quest for perfection.

The individual in search for success understands that they are imperfect humans. That all they need to succeed is just to discover the right way to what they want. Then use that as their success template.

An individual inspired by the desire for success, sets achievable goals. Having accepted their imperfections, set goals they know they have the capacity to achiwve.

This is not what the seeker of perfection does. A perfectionist lives in an utopian world where everything is perfect. As a product of that belief, they often set unrealistic and unachievable goals.

Unachievable goals because they’re unlikely to be inventive and patient enough to achieve them. Perfection is an enemy to creativity.

Now, if perfectionism hasn’t led you to where you desire to be then it’s time you changed course.

Start now to set achievable goals. Be honest to yourself and set goals that align with your areas of strength and passion. Attach deadlines to your goals and keep your eyes on results.

As results come in, analyze them objectively and avoid blaming yourself when those results fall short of your expectations. Success is a process and learning from mistakes is part of the process. Learning from your mistakes may lead you to fortuitous discoveries.

Continue to take those actions that are your strategy to achieve your goals.Be decisive and fast. Avoid the attractiveness of procrastination.

Surround yourself with great people. You are going to need their love, support, wisdom and honesty as you go for success. But don’t take them for granted. Be grateful for having them around as a hedge and let them know you truly appreciate them.

Finally, be self disciplined. With the ultimate goal always in view, self discipline will not let you stop until you get there. This truth was clearly expressed by Theodore Roosevelt when he said;

*With self-discipline almost anything is possible.”

If you do not drive perfectly you are going to harm someone and something.

The same applies to Surgery, Law, Architecture etc.

Therefore, what then is perfection?

I do not know but I am satisfied with Accuracy!

Perfection is a mirage, it doesn't exist. It is simply your standard of saying something or someone is giving you full utility.

It's my Birthday (It is not a mirage always)

I am not a perfectionist. But when I set out to achieve some goals, I do that without looking back. And most times, it's a success.

Perfectionism does not mean setting unrealistic targets or goals as you implied. But attaining the end-point stated from the onset with well thought-out plans and alternatives, incase the main one flops, with thorough discipline.
Mediocrity is not an option.

Whoever told you perfectionists abandon projects halfway cos of disappointment?? They always find an alternative route as soon as possible!! Don't even go there.

And most times, they do it all alone cos the moment you constitute a team as a perfectionist, you start to see other people's flaws and shortcomings, which would affect your end point or targeted goal, might even impede your success rate.
So as a perfectionist, set achievable and realistic goals... Then the rest is history.

The pursuit of perfection leads to unparalleled improvement, so it won't lead to stagnation if approached with the right mindset.

Albeit, trying to achieve a 100% performance in all cases is foolish. The society itself is preprogrammed with flaws.

Perfectionist are most likely moralist and moralist aren't always happy either by how the society fails to promote morals or their aim of being perfect fails because they couldn't meet up with the counting morals the society demands... cool

Being perfectionist and success driven are not mutually exclusive. They go hand in hand most times because it is incredibly difficult to achieve enduring success in saturated fields without a healthy dose of perfectionist traits. The pitfall is the fixation on how every aspect of the process and system must be perfect from the beginning without realizing that true perfection in itself is a process mostly determined by external factors. I really think the trick is in discerning what areas require undiluted perfection (mostly internal/admin aspects) and what aspects of the venture can do with a more laidback and learner approach.

Nothing is perfect. Good systems, people, actions, models often seem to function correctly based on their ability to detect errors and correct them automatically or gradually. This is what gives rise to improvement.
You need a standard reference before you can even claim something or someone is what you deem 'perfect'. However, what is the guarantee that even your standard reference for perfection is not flawed by other factors?

Perfection can never impede improvement
.In the quest for perfection there's always a room for improvement, but then bear in mind that no man can be identified with perfection without Improvements.Because there's constant improvements,Which aid in the cause for perfection. But there's people I call wannabe perfectionist ,they don't accept correction or in the knowledge that man keeps improving .So the turns to be Narcissists in the cause of perfection.

Quite expository

I can say this is something I suffer from as I always function in two extremes, either something is exactly how I want it or I'd rather be without it

Also maybe because I despise mediocrity and think being average is barely succeeding

God help me

Well, Op...

You presented perfection from one angle; the negative one and carefully avoided giving a wholistic analysis. I say we examine perfection objectively.

True, the quest for perfection can be a really frustrating one. But the frustration at failure is equally matched with a zeal for success which rather than keeps one down, functions as a driving force that propels and makes a perfectionist keep striving. When critically viewed, it would appear that those who even give up easily and are stagnated, are those who settle for mediocrity. Perfectionists always have something to which they look up to. Once a goal is actualized, they set a higher goal and wok towards it. If a task is stubborn, they keep at it undeterred by the numerous obstacles and challenges they may encounter.

So what then is perfection?

My answer is, when no one is harmed!
