I Hope We Don't Kill KIVA

For the uninitiated Kiva is a place where people from the developing world borrow money from people in the west. You have a business in Nigeria but don't have money to expand, you go to Kiva and a sympathetic lender will loan you the money.

I have not heard of any Nigerian scam involving Kiva but for how long. How long before a greedy Nigerian borrow money from Kiva and then come up with stories like, armed robbers stole the money or police seized the money at check point. I just hope one stupid Nigerian don't spoil it for the rest of us. www.kiva.org

Most of the people they are helping seem to be people with existing businesses who want to expand.

It says $25?
Re: Kiva: A Place To Borrow Money by joshjosh(m): 1:25pm On Dec 22, 2007
even if they are giving $1 i personally pray they don't extend it to Nigeria because knowing our people they will just soil our name more in the international scene. i watched a documentary on kiva in one of the US channel and saw even poor people in Latin America and Kenya( i think but i am sure it is Kenya because it was October i watched the programme) repaying their loans and thought God how can we become like this?

earlier this year too while back here i saw another on Oprah and it was a brilliant concept but it will never work in Nigeria. i remember the NDE loans of the 80S very well how it was seriously abused.

now i know some will post rubbish about this but i care more for the corporate name of Nigeria than small minded people. some of us are tired of the stupidity some of our people do.we have tolerance for fraud and thieving that i think is obscene

@joshjosh

I see your prophesy did come through embarassed angry
There I was racking the ol' brain cells, wondering why Kiva had not partnered with microfinance organisations in Obodo Nigeria.

LAPO and Kiva

Kiva is suspending fundraising for loans from the Nigerian microfinance institution LAPO and refunding LAPO loans on the site that have yet to be fully funded.

LAPO has been the subject of recent controversy surrounding its high return on assets and high interest rates. Kiva began a preliminary investigation to answer many of the questions raised about LAPO’s social mission and has begun to receive important information from the institution. Until we're able to confirm a clear plan and demonstrable progress on key metrics regarding LAPO's social mission, we've chosen to take the prudential step of pausing the institution from further fundraising on Kiva.

What does this mean for existing Kiva lenders?
Currently fundraising loans that have not yet been fully funded will be refunded to lenders.
Existing loans that have been fully funded will be paid back to Kiva lenders as each LAPO borrower makes their regular payments.
In addition, new loans from LAPO will not be added to Kiva.

LAPO was Kiva's partner in Nigeria. But they ran into some problems that affected the Microfinance Industry as a whole (we all know what those problems were when the CBN came down with its big stick).

@Stagger, I hear you.
Do you know if there is an alternative that is even remotely comparable to the previous offering by Kiva at present?

the way I see it, the kiva service is no more available for Nigerians, since the 2 Nigerian reps has defaulted. Both LAPO and the other 1 from Jos.

Both why can't Nigerians set up something like that for their fellow Nigerians? Not every Nigerian is fraudulent.

An interesting poser @Instafx, especially in view of the following development:
Based on her experience in founding SEM Fund, Kiva’s oldest filed partner in Senegal, Julia Kurnia believes there is a vast untapped potential for p2p lending in microfinance.

To tap it she launched Zidisha.org, a non-profit that makes two changes in the process. First: There are no intermediaries. Lenders lend directly to computer literate entrepreneurs in Africa (currently Senegal and Kenya). Second: Only entrepreneurs with a credit history that have in the past paid back a loan by a bank or a financial institution successfully are eligible (this is verified).

Zidisha which is essentially a clone of Kiva  is to be found here: https://www.zidisha.org/index.php

I hope Companies of this nature continue to exist and help establish lots of Nigerians into the path of Self- employment. This is much needed in the Country.

There are at least close to a dozen of these outfits operating across Africa now as things stand.
But then, one's got to ask, what makes Nigeria so peculiar that companies specialising in p2p finance stay way clear.

Why have our local banks not shown an interest in the sort of lending?
Re: Kiva: A Place To Borrow Money by basadenet: 7:45pm On Sep 22, 2011
I dont think Nigeria can benefit from it. it is meant for people from poor countries like Bangladeshi, etc, And the loan given is just a meager sum to finance small biz. so Naijas take your heart off from it.

Fellow Nigerians, I have seen your treads and your expressions. I am presently working on something which I am sure will work in Nigeria.

Look out for it. It offers loans to employed individuals, self-employed people ans SMEs in Nigeria. The funds come from various internal and external sources including individuals and businesses in Nigeria who want to lend to others at interest rate of about 18% annually.

Each loan is either secured or unsecured. Secured loans are secured by collateral or guarantees.

It will soon start operations in Nigeria. It is developed by one of our own.
Re: Kiva: A Place To Borrow Money by loanman: 8:49pm On Oct 13, 2012
Further to my last comments, the p2p lending site for Nigerians is out and ready for operations. We hope to start operations in jan/freb 2013. Check out the site;

Friends, its high time we are empowered to determine who we lend our money to to ensure honorable people and businesses with genuine financial needs get loans. It is cos of this that Fondospace Ltd was set up. Fondospace enables direct lending among individuals and businesses in a secure environment. Loans are secured by guaranty or collateral or unsecured, you the lender decides which loan you want to fund. Interest rates are lower than obtainanle in banks while returns to lenders is higher than FGN bonds (active investors can make up to 20% annual interest). This is not a fraudulent scheme, all loans requests listed on our site are from genuine people and businesses and the interest rate is benchmarked against the market rate.

Check www.fondospace.com.ng.
