How much did u pay to get it and how long?

It took 3 weeks.( Don't count on it though,I know someone who has been waiting for 2 months too.)

My point was that you can travel with your current passport which is still valid.

Same happened to me with a bank in early 2020 but I kept being passed around by the customer service guys as they kept changing their stories from it is auto-renew even though I had specifically opted out of auto-renew - we didnt need to inform you since it is auto-renew and crazy stories.... When I was in Nigeria last year, I went in to close my Forex and current accounts with the said bank while leaving the Naira account, they begged me not to because they realised that they were in the wrong and they refused to close the account cos of the 5p and 10cents that were left I withdrew saying that they couldn't close except it was empty - I couldn't withdraw that. The refund for the said card took 2 days after that.
humblemoi:

Actually the banks are in the wrong. I have written to two of my banks quoting CBN's guideline about issuance of cards without prior written consents and both banks refunded me the charges and destroyed the cards and I am saying this was in 2021.

Please refer to the CBN Guidelines for Card Issuance and Usage in Nigeria Section 47 (3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 (as amended) sub-section 3.16 “Unsolicited cards should not be issued. Where an unsolicited card is issued and activated without the written consent of the recipient and the latter is billed for the same, or fraudulent activity occurs, the card issuer shall not only reverse the charges forthwith, but also pay a penalty, without objection to the recipient, amounting to twice the value of the charges reversed.”

Thanks.

I did some research and most users with similar horrendous experience advised using bank ATMs instead of random street machines, just as you mentioned.

Lesson learned but the school fees too much. shocked

SamReinvented:

Omo, na wayo be this. UBA doesn’t charge me any fees, and the FX rates I get is always very close to what’s on Google.

PS: I have only used bank ATMs, as those street ATMs carry additional fees and sometime terrible exchange rate. However, it’s always best to just use your card more for purchase and less for cash withdrawals, especially for this kinda wayo bank.

Thanks, guys.

I've cancelled the contract oo.

May I ask if Lebara contract can be used to improve credit report/score?

I read it's only networks like 3, EE, Vodafone that work for credit building.

ybahrbz91:
3 ntwk was also poor for me when I got the contract.
I canceled the 3rd day.

I am still on Lebara £25 unlimited monthly.
The money is paining me but the only solace I have in this Lonely country is having a good unlimited ntwk provider.
If I see a good alternative contract SIM, I go jump on am sha but my advise is you cancel the 3 contract within the 14days window period

SamReinvented:

Ah. Not really sure. 3 network is perfect in my area, so I didn’t have to worry.

Insurance quotes, got varying determinants in arriving at price quotations.........

Because I got a cheap quote from insurance company A, does not guarantee insurance A, would issue you an equally cheap quote........

Considerations for quotes -

- Your post code
- Your vehicle
- Your driving history
- Years of no claims bonus
- Driving license history

Search for scrap yard close to you

Search for your car model on Facebook market place and put braking in the front. You'll see people that want to sell spare parts from accident cars

Ebay.
Breakers' yards in your city.
Diesel cars are fine. I drive a diesel, even though as Lexus pointed out they do have those weak points in the EGR valve (and the DPF). If you are using your car for short, intra-city trips, get a petrol car. Diesel cars require some TLC, such as hitting a motorway every so often (I used to do Sunday mornings) for the whole DPF regeneration thing. (That might not be sustainable in these days of £2/litre). Apart from that, for common models you should find anything you want on eBay, but if I were using an old model diesel and any of those diesel-specific wahala cropped up, off to the scrapyard it goes.

Thanks OgaHR and everyone who assisted me…. I was quoted £400 each at the auto center I took my car to, I told them no I can’t buy 4 injectors for £1600, else I will add money and get another car… So following the advice I got several quotes through Ebay for £150 each, which means buying 4 will cost me £600 as opposed to the auto center £1600… I will be going to the scrap yard by 2 pm to see what I’m paying for myself, I will have it tested and if it works fine I will pay asap….

My drive time to work both to and fro is about 1 hour 20 minutes, and I’m using old model IS220d (2007), if after spending this much money and it starts doing nonsense again, I will be selling it asap… Make one car no go send me go back home grin grin

Or I can I use my GTBank usd card over there for my booked hotel payment etc..?
Please what is the best advice?
I will be reading comments

Also,
I have another question,
How do I navigate from where the bus will stop me to my hotel seeing that I may have not gotten a UK SIM by then?
If I decide I want to use uber, how do I hail a uber without internet on my phone(Seeing that
I will have no SIM with data) then..?
Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 2) by lightnlife: 12:44pm On Jun 11, 2022
Happy Weekend, House.

Please, I need some insight on getting a phone bill/sim contract.

So, I brought a pay-as-you-go Lebara sim from Nigeria. The network and rate have been good in my UK location.

But I was looking to get a sim contract to help my credit rating, so I got a Three sim contract for 9pounds.

Unfortunately, 3 network is super terrible in this location, so I called them to cancel the contract.

I've been doing searches for a new network contract but mehn, the rates are high - minimum of 15pounds.

Q1: Can I use my Lebara sim for a contract and will it count for credit building? I read somewhere that not all networks contract count for credit building: Lebara, Lyca...

Q2: Can I just get the cheapest of Three's contract (6pounds pcm just for credit building sake) while still maintaining my Lebara sim (maybe 5pounds pcm, because we have broadband service of 28pounds pcm at home). This will mean my total monthly mobile bill will be 11pounds. Does this sound like a good idea?

Thanks.

You can activate roaming on your phone and still browse..... it'll likely connect with Vodafone network and you'll be able to use the internet.

Ensure you have enough airtime in your phone.

Add your dollar card to your Uber cos you can't pay in cash and can't order without a card added to your Uber account.

It's better to withdraw and convert the dollar to Naira in Nigeria.

You can then decide to either exchange the Naira to Pounds from Aboki in Nigeria and bring the cash to the UK or keep the Naira in your Nigerian account till you open a UK account, then get an exchanger (omopapa, Lexusgs430...) to exchange it for Pounds into your UK account.

Dollar to Pound exchange, either via ATM or Cash/Transfer, in the UK isn't always pleasant.

Since you'll be booking a hotel and taking cabs, I'll advise you to come with the exchanged pounds (cash) so you can pay your bills before getting a sim and opening an account.

Per Internet Access.

From my experience, my sim/data roamed as soon as I landed at Heathrow.

Also, there is usually open wifi in the airport. I actually didn't use any, as my sim roamed after I landed.

Worst-case scenario, just take a screenshot or write out your UK destination and contact person before flying from Nigeria. Old school way never fails.

Best wishes.

If you received the Lebara sim from the VAC in Nigeria, you can slot it in your phone and start using when you land.

It works immediately
