But this is a first for me and I am a witness.

Recently we did not have power supply for a little over 4 days due to a faulty transformer.

On a particular day we pumped water into two water tanks and it finished under 4 hours. These are tanks that ideally should last well over a week.
So it was obvious there was a leakage.
Today a plumber came to investigate and discovered the compound at the back had linked a pipe to our own and has been TAPPING water for God knows how long.
Well he has been disconnected and he will surely have to sort himself out. As he no go fit talk am out

If you do your findings, your landlord probably gave them access to the water tank of his own will. Linking pipes isn't something you can do in secret unless you're dealing with really crafty elements

Very unlikely the compound behind is occupied by squatters.

The landlord does not stay in the compound and would have informed us of such arrangements

I suggest you let them know you are aware of that instead of disconnecting them completely.

Also, both parties can have a balance if it is within your means so as to reduce the distance they would have to cover to get water.

The compound is behind mine and so on another close. It would be more realistic for them to liaise with their neighbours on the same street.

For your sanity; disconnect them, you can't control their water usage and you'll end up hurting yourself. Because water is important, you can run a short tap and let them fetch outside your compound if you can afford it. That way, you can control the quantity of water drawn from your tank
